- After the murder of Khashoggi of Saudi Arabia, the question is what will happen with the reforms. Is the support for Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman crumbling?
We travel to the rarely covered conservative South, on the border with Yemen, where the population’s resistance to change is the fiercest.
Saudi Arabia is well known across the world for its wealth, strict faith, and oppression, but while Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman has decreed that it wants to reform, the world is startled by the murder of journalist Khashoggi and other human rights violations.
We follow the developments from the inside, through the eyes of the inhabitants themselves. Are they just empty promises or is Saudi Arabia actually able to change?

Yet other Western countries stay quiet about it.
What less humane ways are you talking about? Do you really think lethal injection (what's commonly used in the US) is less humane than chopping someone's head with an axe, or hanging in public squares?
The US also doesn't execute people for simple crimes or without a trial and a chance for appeal. SA executes rape victims, adultery, war on God which can be any simple thing they come up with.

Death penalty for murdering is a decent deterrent.

Very much so. It was a failure of communication full stop. A good investigative journalist has been working on his sources for months before he goes in country, and as such generally has much more rapport.
Had he cultivated it over time, and perhaps given her conditions of anonymity, then she would have probably spoke more to her ideals. But speaking against the royal family is suicide. It's an idiot of a journalist that doesn't understand that! Seems he didn't bother with the investigation bit, just thought he'd ask questions in a very private country, with moderately hard-line religious rule. Just in bad taste.
I hope his interviewing of Lina doesn't have unfortunate repercussions for herself or for her programmes. She obviously knows how to walk the line, and she's seeded something that's grown over nearly two decades to something that is beginning to drive positive change for women.
She has my enduring respect for pushing the limits in a country that does not encourage anyone to do so, women least of all.

@@filipepedro8272 I think he and his team walked into a culture they hadn't bothered to learn enough about up front. Usually you start out with a relevant community in your own country, network and gain trust, promise limits and slowly move towards making contacts in country, who you then cultivate for a period.
It's like the difference between cold calling, and calling back a solid lead. One might work, but it's spur of the moment, no preparation. I prefer to do my research up front, I think it's unprofessional to do otherwise. And he very nearly embarrassed Lina by trying to push her to criticism, a position she really can't afford.
I honestly don't care if it's a one man band or CNN doing in country docus, but I dislike unprofessional behaviour, especially when it puts members of the community at risk. Doubly so in this instance because she's been building her organisation for a long time and has a good foothold on making changes over generations.
I don't expect quick change, but it's programmes like Lina's that will lead to lasting changes for women in Saudi. I support her goals. Change has to come from within, and it is, it's just slow. But none of the developed world went from caves to mansions without causing pollution, wars, and out of control expansion. I think it's hypocritical to expect other cultures to change overnight to align with those values. Especially when I disagree with many of the values in the developed world! Rampant commercialism, disposable society, the widening wealth divide. I wouldn't wish those things on any developing country.
I'd rather see them do better than we did, and they're not going to learn that from us, no matter how enlightened we think our societies are.
I look at all sources and try and form a composite picture of the situation from the given facts, if they're supported. I don't really trust any one source of news anymore. I just hoover it up like a blue whale hoovering silt up from the sea floor, and try and extract the details from the hype or spin, with each source. I like in country documentaries, done well, preferably by a small tight crew who do it frequently, because they give relevant first hand knowledge. At least some of the time.

Her expressions during the interview was revealing. Especially in her position as a sworn servant of the Saudi government. Every sentence can pose a danger for her and her family.
The guy at around 37 minute time talking about how maids and the locals are fine, total bs.

Our maid lived with us around 11 years she was go to her country and always come back! She still contact with my mom! Most the family I know are like us! I will not say that all the families are good! But the maids can call the companies that they work with and leave! No one can force them to stay!

Not really. He knows fully well they will not answer sensitive questions or they'll be in trouble, so why ask? For fun? Not fun for them.
He is not close to courage, he is just a stupid guy who wasted his time just to create a gap between the Saudis and their government, which won’t happen even in his dreams. We are very loyal to our king and his crown prince, and every decision made by them will be respected. On the other side, stupid western people don’t want us to develop our country and predominant the world, which in few years with god’s willingness would happen.

Those parts showing 'poverty' are where the migrant workers live, not for Saudi citizens. They in fact reside in government funded housing or on their ancestral homes.
I read a story on Dubai, all foreigners are housed according to the jobs they were hired to do. The Saudi Arabia employer decides on the quality of their housing & welfare during their time of employment. For Westerners they have it good, I have friends who are there earning a good salary. However for those coming from neighboring countries not so good.
I agree, this person Sinan is just showing his own Persian-sided bias in trying to show the world that Saudi Arabia is a poor, only a desert country when in reality it is far from that.
As an American I find a country dedicated to religious principals refreshing. As a Christian concerned that our church has lost its way, if indeed it ever had one, seeing as how it was the Romans that plotted a course more inline with domination than guidance.I also worry that Islam and christianity have both stray'ed from the intentions our One God intended for his people. A purpose I believe which was to guide people on a corse of enlightenment so we can live in harmony with one another. So far we failed miserably in that pursuit. The many reasons for our failure I will not go into here, but the chief reason being, man tries to usurp the supreme being whenever he comes to power.

God opened my eyes to truth and became a muslim years ago and started using miswak. I don’t even see the so called “religious” people using it here in Europe. But as time passes I’m finding more and more benefits. Lately I got to know that it makes your face muscles stronger and define your face features, making you look more handsome.

The place (Abha) you refer to in the documentary as poor happens to be the greenest region in Saudi Arabia
I lived there and there you would find some stone carved houses 1500 metres above sea level as old as 300 years old (some UNESCO world heritage sites are located there)
It's for this reason you might find people there a bit conservative yet welcoming

This documentary series was great. I am only a little hesitant on Sinan asking ordinary people what they think about politically sensitive issues. You can feel nervous for them. Fantastic series none the less.

High quality documentary here. Also... I never understood or appreciated how massive and vast Saudi Arabia looks. The terrain and the other natural characteristics are beautiful.
Linas physical movements could show how uncomfortable she was with those questions those weren’t get real answers. Good questions asked to wrong/limited people did they know you were going to ask those questions? That looked like an ambush

I lived in Saudi for the last 3 years. 2019 till 2021. I witness many changes and reforms including women rights. I would love to return and live there

I don't like the Saudi government or any who claim to be royalty but I found this documentary a bit strange and pointless apart from a nice tour of the country. I had to ask myself what was the main subject question that was investigated 🤔he kept jumping from subject to subject.

For those who don't know why he switches to dutch in some part of the documentary, it is because he is chauffeured around by a saudi observer who relays his movement and utterances to the ministry/king. I'm a Muslim but I wouldn't live in Saudi (yet).

If you don't like Saudi Arabia or anything about their religion, traditions, and people then don't go there. Leave them alone.
Bruh the west love taking jabs at the east but say what you want the east stands their ground, the country is ruled by a ruler. Unlike every country in west whose leader is an absolute joke. Look at Boris, a complete bellend. Look at Biden made a joke by the people he "leads". In saudi you go into any hotel there's an image of the crown prince and his predecessors. The people understand that yes they might do things wrong here and there but in the end as muslims we advise the ruler in a respectful manner. We're muslims our principals and what we live by wont bend because someone's feeling are hurt or because they don't agree with it. We live by our law you live yours. Learn about the shariah and why it's the most just law that will ever be implemented on this earth. But be open minded don't look at the law through your western ideals and standards.

I love the realistic pragmatism that they understand western style democracy may not and probably wont work in a society that doesnt have a culture of democracy.
Totally agree. I think in the West we get hung up on the idea that democracy is always what’s best for a country. In most cases I’d say that’s true but there are certain countries where it probably isn’t. China for example just had way too many people so it needed to have a strong authoritarian center who could implement a plan. Their success was their ability to marry Communism with capitalism. KSA needed to divorce itself from church and that wasn’t going to happen in a democracy. The irony is in the US we have the electoral college. I’m no expert on that stuff but I have to believe such a system was a “safeguard” where the government will allow a democracy to exist until it thinks the people made a really bad mistake 😂
Even Socretes said that voting isn't a right it's a skill. Allowing everyone to vote could lead to a catastrophe.

I would love to travel all round Saudi. Best time of my life was 2019 Hajj with my elderly father.
Left my heart in Madinah and loved all the special places we visited, Makkah, Mina, Muzdalifa. Masjid Al Haram, Masjid Al Nawabi beautiful heart warming places.

Asir region very close to Yemen seems very cultural unlike the rest of the Saudi Arabia, the Asir region houses look similar to Yemenis houses, beautiful withhistorical identity, weather/climate also differ from the rest of Arabia.it seems that there is a cultural, civilisation connection with great civilisation of Yemen, people of Asir seems very educated and cultural.

@@touringthecitywalking9209 They literally just said on this documentary that Saudi Arabia is made up of Tribes and every tribe has an elder someone who's literally that "an Elder" meaning someone who's the eldest of that tribe is the tribes elder!
And you could clearly see that the old man was very well respected as no one in the village said a word about the journalist filming because he was with the Tribal elder!

This documentary was filmed in 2017. They've mentioned religious police, closing shops for prayer times... It's 2021 non of that exists and the country has changed a lot ever since.
We consider this a negative side actually

I'm amazed of some of the comments, one has to know Saudi before and after MBS, changes are incredible, the progression MBS brought to Saudi is real and based on tangible facts!
However, since its inauguration the old guards looses grip and the Iran back ethnies mainly in the East Coast of Saudi took advantage and started destabilisation and terrorism campaigns. I can fully understand why MBS need to hit hard on these renegades, after all MBS's choice is simple: "Either quash Iran backed terrorism and move forward with his long term vision" or "Let these Iran backed militias create troubles and fail to implement his long term vision"!
In political and sociology sciences it is well known that Muslim countries, moreover new democracies, the State has to fulfil growth and give a reason for youths to live decently. Should it fail to implement successful social and economical reforms, youths will turn either to criminality or to fundamentalism, and such failed states will become a breeding ground for organisations like ISIS or Al Qaeda!
Therefore I fully support MBS, his vision and his long term projects, such as reducing Saudi's economy dependence on petrol, creation of amazing and environmentally friendly tourism projects like the one on the central west coast of the Red Sea!
In a nutshell, before making stupid comments about Saudi or MBS, I would strongly suggest you to spend a bit a time in Saudi and start to appreciate its country rich culture and amazing wealth!

The questions on ground are some of the most unsettling considering the consequences for the participants. I would also refuse to answer as this puts people's lives at risk. This prince has such a feared reputation at such a young age, interesting. Public executions have failed to stop further crime, so what's the point? It only causes psychological trauma to those watching.
The reform looking govt should open a institute to train a group of religious people which after right training could be appointed in religious places around the country. Dictating changes without preparing them mentally for changes will not work and it will not last.

The Religious Police, Mutawa, has been largely retired. They are no longer in the malls harassing folks to go to prayer and or harass women for not wearing their hajib.

Presumptions underline a good part of this documentary, not to mention the usual western prejudices. Perhaps we need to question whether or not our value system and political-economic setup is really the only one and, if it's really valid for one and all.

This is the most unreal stories program. This is very deceitful representation of this country, You went to judge this country in a western examination microscope. This is very unfair. Sir, you are unbelievable in doing what you are doing there. You're speaking to those lovely, innocent people who are both young and old. Asking questions that may cause them harm, and you know that too. They are opening up to you and are probably unaware that everyone around the world will see it. Worst of all, their own government will hear and see it too. I guess investigative journalists will do anything for views.
I thought it was a lovely documentary to inform and think about the immediate and far-reaching consequences of change until he started to ask those sensitive questions! Awsome topic, disgusted by the hidden agenda of journalist!
They aren't unaware...he has a camera in their faces. It is scary to think of what could happen to them for answering his questions, but the certainly knew he was recording this. Perhaps we should thank them for doing so, they did not owe us to participate but they did despite their discomfort...so while he's in the wrong, I think they deserve praise.
