I met Evan Tanner, he was a very quiet warrior. Very reserved but he told me just a little bit of his story and how he got into the fight scene. I’ll never forget that night. Got my picture with him and he signed a cool T shirt for me. I still wear that T shirt after many many years. Lost the photo of us that was on my mobile phone and I was sick to my stomach! Rest in piece my friend....
HIGHRIDER 3 i always forgot and just assume people have been watching mma as long as I have .. I still miss the old pride days .. trying to find videos of the fights and reading the results after the fights .. way before RUclips
Thanks for the story Chael. The first Tanner-Baroni fight was a wild one from start to finish. Second one was pretty much all Tanner, maybe his best striking performance overall.
I trained with Team Quest back in the day when it was in the back a car lot. I met Chael actually rolled with him and Randy. This guy named Matt Horowitz was crazy good on the ground but what I took away from that entire 2wks was that Evan Tanner was a really decent man. He actually took time to talk to me and knew my name when I would walk in.
Chael I wish we had that wisdom that you guys operated in during the kickboxing days of the '80s. I had a dear friend miss the biggest payday in defense of his World Champion title and ESPN appearance in the middle '80s to defend his Kickboxing title. I will never forget the sound as he was hit, as the fighter/medic I knew he could not defend the title on ESPN in just a few short day days. I still feel sad to this very day when I think of that night. Thankfully, life treated my buddy pretty well as an actor, over 65 movies, televisions series including the Flash, movies acting alongside Al Pacino, The Green Hornet the list goes on. A note to my friend if you see this, I know you will agree with me that that spar night was meant to happen to send you in the direction you needed to go. Love you dude, Forever undefeated Welterweight Champion you know who you are!
Man, I love listening to these stories :D And Chael has trained with or fought such legends that his words should really mean a lot to everybody. I mean, the guy fought the MW GOAT, the LHW GOAT, and the HW GOAT. And he had them all in trouble. Fedor had him hurt on nearly every exchange, but Sonnen kept coming back, and Fedor was starting to get tired (that doesn't mean he was getting close to being done, though). Chael was so close to beating Anderson and even Jon. I mean, Jon's toe was messed up. Another thing I loved about Sonnen the fighter is that he always came to fight. The guy pushed the tempo and kept attacking. I love that. Sure, it's dangerous, but too many fighters are playing it safe. He also created excitement with his intelligent trash talk. One of a kind, Chael Sonnen.
I also sparred with Mayhem at reign training center. He definitely goes hard. Also before Mark banned him from the gym, he walked into the pro practice with a lit cigar and took an open door shit in front of everyone. Dude was just all around not right in the head.
i work with some pretty trustable guys too uncle chael.. we're about to charter a bunch of fine folk to Fremantle, West Australia & back to bring in the new year 🎉 so here's to the next decade 🍻 may it be Worthy of all our hopes & dreams for the future.
He says Randy Cotoure never hurt anyone but I remember on TUF season 1, Randy was responsible for hurting Nate Quary amd taking him out of the competition.
Pls uncle chael, would love to hear your thoughts on Romero fighting at 205lb possibly in future and if could aid him in finally winning the bug inr and being able to finish a fight strong
I would love to hear Uncle Chael tell the world about John "Count Dante" Keehan. That guys story is made for this channel. He had mob ties. Took part in dojo wars. Suspect in 4 million dollar purolator vault heist. He was a 1970's "west linn style" gangsta. Marketing genius. spun a yarn so incredible a guy named frank dux stole it and wrote "bloodsport" on the cover. He deserves the Uncle Chael treatment!! 👊🏼
When I first started at my new boxing gym on my first spar the coach warned me in front of my opponent it is only light sparring no heavy stuff. As I proceeded to do that my opponent blasts me with a 12 punch combo trying to knock me out. Very frustrating
I’ve had a lot of toxic sparring at team quest back in 2019 where everyone in class would stop and watch me and the other guy fight lmao I still go there till this day I love that gym 😂
years ago, in portland, my buddy took me to his gym...it was in a basement and was a full gym with a partial octagon. my buddy wanted me to join up. there were 2 other people inda gym...inda ring working pads. the hitter was ripped...and the sound from the pads shook me. i told my pal, this gym is way too advanced for..and that guy working can actually KILL me!!! my pal cracked up laughing and said "of course he can, thats Evan Tanner ufc middleweight Champion!" i almost shit myself!!!
That was Curt’s MMA gym. I used to train there. I joined with zero experience and was scared to death of a Evan. Ended up being a really cool place to train and learn. I was so scared that I fought my ass off when we sparred and later learned people were kinda scared to spar with me. Not saying I was good I just fought/sparred like my life was in danger.
R I.P Evan. I really liked him as a fighter. I never knew he fought Baroni. Now a days for his safety, i think Phil should Fully Retire. & i liked him as a fighter as well but to many concussions are not good for anyone
Nice to have that level of trust! I watched an old episode of bully beat down last night and the trials and tribs of Mayhem and you go mention him. Will training room ethics allow you to tell us if you kicked his ass? I’m Thinking yes
I knew Jason “Mayhem” Miller when he lived and trained here in Atlanta in the early to mid-2000’s. The gym he trained at, where Raphael Assuncao also trained, basically fought instead of “trained”. People were ALWAYS getting hurt, showing up to their fights with black eyes and injuries. They were all great guys but the atmosphere in that school was just like that. Personally I’ve never liked that style of training and always had better success myself and with my students training more like Chael described training with Randy rather than how Mayhem and those other guys trained. My respect for Randy has increased even more after listening to this video because he was a good coach and when he saw that tempers were flaring he separated the two before someone got injured or something bad happened. I’ve seen other coaches and trainers do the opposite sadly.
Mariusz Pudzianowski I believe it! The Chute Boxe guys were tough too! But I think training should be more like Chael describes with Randy than how the Chute Boxe guys trained. Because I was friends with many of those guys at that gym and would work out with them sometimes I didn’t want to name the gym. But anyone that was involved in NHB/MMA in the early-to-mid 2000’s knows exactly which gym I’m talking about it!
Jake Sheilds and David Terell made sure you knew you got you ass kicked when they sparred you. Nick Nate and Diaz and Gilbert Melendez beat you but they didnt beat you up. All good guys.
Damn i didn't even now Evan died until i just googled him. I was, and still, obsessed with motorcycles as a kid I loved the fact that he rode a Harley Softail. Also loved that he was just a little.... strange. Im kinda bummed out right now.
I really wish more gems follow your dreams philosophy.I hate it when you get into a sparring match or even a lesson where you trying to learn something and people f****** take it way too serious as if they're fighting in the octagon on a pay-per-view headlining the card. It's frustrating
In the Evan Tanner documentary you said “if you ever heard an intelligent person speak you’d know that what Evan Tanner said was not from an intelligent person” or something along those lines. What did you mean by that?
Gonna need the exact quote, and possibly some surrounding context. A complimentary interpretation would be that Evan could express profound ideas using simple language. If he said something deep or insightful, then those were his own thoughts expressed in his own words, as opposed to repeating something smart that he'd heard from an "intelligent" person. The other interpretation would be that Chael was calling Evan a dumb-dumb.
Goes to show, if you wanna knock people out in the cage you gotta knock a few sparring partners lol. But thanks Randy for being such a kind ground and pounder.

Lol. This was pretty hilarious. But seriously it’s good to see mayhem sober these days .
Probs salty cos chael beat him in his early days
Mayhem Miller? Who? He's forgotten about.

Ironic story about Randy never hurting anybody, since that was pretty much the first thing he did when he coached TUF. I love Randy Couture forever.
Most gyms got that 1 guy that is fighting during the workout. Micheal Wayne Leake and Jeff Hinds know what i mean.
