Food stamps usage peaked in 2013, as a result of the recession. The trend started lowering that year. It continued to lower once Trump became President in 2016, partly because continued low unemployment, and partly because the eligibility requirements were tightened.

  • @annap2287

What she meant with the 3.5 million getting off food stamps is exactly what you referred to, he got them in a position where the people made enough money to no longer NEED gov assistance, not in the sense of kicking them off of it.

      @DyvmSlorm 2 года назад +17

@@ElleahWC That is a debate we can have (what the level of assistance and when it should apply). It is some of our beliefs that those levels were to loose before, and encouraged people to not try and get off of the food stamps. If you tighten the rules in certain ways then it SHOULD encourage people to get off the food stamps. However, Candace was directly talking about the increase in jobs which very well MIGHT equal those people not NEEDING food stamps any more.

Currently reading Booker T Washington's book 'Up From Slavery' - it's fascinating to read about different attitudes among the black community in the early years after the abolition of slavery.
Some of those attitudes still exist today: here are a few intersting words from one of the chapters...
"At the time I went to Alabama the coloured people were taking considerable interest in politics, and they were very anxious that I should become one of them politically, in every respect. They seemed to have a little distrust of strangers in this regard. I recall that one man, who seemed to have been designated by the others to look after my political destiny, came to me on several occasions and said, with a good deal of earnestness: " We wants you to be sure to vote jus' like we votes. We can't read de news papers very much, but we knows how to vote, an' we wants you to vote jus' like we votes." He added: " We watches de white man, and we keeps watching de white man till we finds out which way de white man's gwine to vote; an' when we finds out which way de white man's gwine to vote, den we votes 'xactly de other way. Den we knows we's right."
What Washington had to say next is of interest:
he said: I am glad to add, however, that at the present time the disposition to vote against the white man merely because he is white is largely disappearing, and the race is learning to vote from principle, for what the voter considers to be for the best interests of 'both' races.
(Of course, this was long before progressives got their hands on the community and seemed to persuade blacks that they should vote as in a specific way because they are black. Of course, there are other factors like the Jim Crow South too which complicated things further; all the same it's interesting to see how someone of prominence, who was born into slavery, felt about matters. )

I was one of those people that got off food stamps. I’m not black but I’m half Mexican and my kids are part black. During Obama I was only making $12 an hour and I never got a raise for two years so I got a little bit of money for food stamps. During Trump, I went from 12-$17 in two years plus tips which also increased bc the economy was great and that meant people had more disposable income to spend. I didn’t need food stamps anymore bc I was able to feed myself and my child. 5$ an hour working 40-45 hours a week is significant, it’s $800-1000 more a month! I even saved some money and wasn’t living paycheck to paycheck like I was under Obama.
Now that I don’t have a job anymore bc of the lockdowns in my state and high inflation and gas prices, I’m back on food stamps and depressed. I’d rather be working full time like before and paying for my own food. Working and being independent is a great feeling and depending on someone else is a really crappy feeling.

Dude, I am a hard core conservative. I've been down before, wondering where my next meal was coming from. I've been homeless, and had to stay with relatives for extended periods of time. The only time I've ever had government assistance was getting unemployment that didn't even buy groceries after I got laid off in 2009. I managed to just barely keep my head above water for 4 months. I'm a software engineer and couldn't find a job. I ended up having to move several states away and ask my parents to take in my entire family while I continued to look for work.
All that is to say that government assistance for those who *really* need it is not enough. We need to increase that. But to do that, we have to get the parasites off the government dole first so that people who really need the money can get it before they lose their homes and resort to eating bologna on hand sandwiches twice a day.
So, yeah, anybody that isn't 100% disabled that is using the government as their primary source of income needs to be dealt with. I'm all for paying literally all of someone's bills when they need a hand up, but the government supporting people in perpetuity needs to stop.

Joe, I'd add that, as others have stated, the government has shown constant ineptitude in just about every program they have tried to run. Before the major welfare programs, those in need would rely on their local communities (church, neighborhood, etc). It wasn't perfect BUT that local governance was much more flexible and catered to the specific needs of that community much better then some generic governmental program.

If you recall, many working-class people were working 3-5 crappy jobs with no benefits at any of the jobs. Of course, the unemployment rate for black people will go down, but not because those "jobs" are lifting them out of poverty. Why? Because employers keep hours below the level where they're required to offer benefits. This BS about getting people off SNAP is crap. Clinton introduced rules surrounding work requirements and government assistance in the mid-90s. There are a lot of very short memories. The working class also held a lot of this country together throughout the early part of the pandemic. They also had extremely high mortality rates because they were in jobs that you can't do from home-working in grocery stores, restaurants, etc.

I was dependent on food stamps. I started my own daycare, and worked my way off. Just as I was about to grow into the an income above the median poverty line I got sick. Tried to work through it, but ended up flat on my back. Reality hit that I had to give up the business, I cried like a baby. I cried because I realized I had to go back to depending on the government. My joy is that my child has worked her way off of assistance, as a single mother of two and has not looked back. She left my house dependent and shed program after program until she was free. She excelled greatly when Trump was in office.

That is so true, and it was true from day one. Industry is beneficial to farming, and farming is beneficial to industry. I have several jobs in industry including crop dusting, hog farm, calf ranch, the biosecurity side, meat packing, grain elevator, and working fields, harvest, hauling grain to the feed yards and more. Farming could not be successful without industry, but it can be successful without slavery. The tractors, irrigation systems, airplanes, buildings, feeders, feed mills, grain bins, grain elevators, helicopters, conveyor systems, other storage facilities, combines, grain carts, the trucks could not be possible without industry and there would be wide spread food shortages without the advances in industry. If that would have been realized in the earlier parts of the 19th century, probably would have avoided the Civil War and freed the slaves much sooner. It is a black mark on our nation, and we have to acknowledge it and remember it so it will not be repeated in our nation. It makes me so mad that the party that did this all just will not admit it was them, and under the same basic tenets of the ideology they have today.

I was never on government assistance but I wore the cheapest shoes to school and sometimes they were taped and glued together, my clothes had holes and stains and never fit right and I never ate school lunches. The kids that were on government assistance ate lunch every day and had nice clothes and the best shoes. 30 yrs later a lot of those people are still on government assistance. I have always refused government assistance and have been able to increase my wealth far beyond what I thought possible. I’m not saying that assistance is bad but some people make a living off it.

I was on welfare years ago, it was devastating to me but I had two sons and their father had left.
The thing that aggravated me the most was the people at the welfare office didn’t have the inclination to help me figure out how to get off of it.
They didn’t care, as a matter of fact if they helped us get off of it they wouldn’t have a job.
    The system is screwed.
They talk about the green new deal like oh we will create jobs.
The government shouldn’t be a jobs program, they make new things up to hire more employees, at taxpayers expense.
The federal government gets too involved with everything, the point of states is we get to run things like we want not the feds. They are supposed to be limited in their power but they just keep taking more and more.
Also government wastes too much money and does most things terribly.
The TSA has wasted billions of dollars on an inept and frustrating system.
They catch no one, steal from passengers, treat us like shit, and waste tons of taxpayer money.
Once government starts something it never ends, expand, waste, lie, repeat.
That’s exactly how I feel, we are all Americans!

Actually a leftist said this in one argument/talk show that as people grow older they tend to become more conservative. That's the reason why they want to push leftist ideas so much more in the college campuses (and now even to elementary and high school) because that's the only time that they would accept leftist ideas and that's the reason why they try to block most conservative talks and ideas in college campuses. I can't remember the name of the exact person who said that but she said this specifically saying that's the only short time they have them in their folds before they shift over.
I don't really think older people become more conservative as they grow older. Just more in the middle as you realize that things aren't always left or right but there is always a middle ground. The problem is the people in the middle are more often than not pushed out of the left by the pressure from the leftist. Just look at Van's journey and how much people have hated him for just listening to the other side. The conservatives on the other hand are more than willing to let you listen to both sides and are more open to dialogue. Thus the people in the middle more often than not veer slightly conservative. The truth is both sides are right depending on the topic at hand.

The man sitting directly behind Candace - in the light grey suit - is her grandfather. Sweet man who, by her own account, absolutely LOVES his granddaughter.

When she talks about getting people off food stamps: The administration didn't kick people off food stamps, the President has no control over policies surrounding those programs. The administration enabled a business climate that supported black communities and people were able to leave behind those things. As a guy who grew up in a single parent household that relied on foodstamps, the issue was not that my mother wanted us to be on food stamps and rent assistance. But it literally made her have to pass up jobs because those jobs didn't pay enough for us to keep a roof over our heads and feed us because if you make minimum wage you lose all of that support. So we couldn't leave the system. In a better business climate, she could have gotten a job that allowed her to leave that stuff behind. So, in that respect, nothing was taken away from anyone because people were literally getting jobs that got them off the subsistence living that government benefits creates.

I’ve worked at gas stations in Memphis before, literally seen people pull up in Bentleys using a food card.
I’ve worked clothes less clubs in multiple cities and seen people pull $ from the machines from financial assistance cards.

The way I understand it is that he got people off food stamps because unemployment was reduced. People weren’t relying on food stamps to eat. I could be wrong tho. My 2 cents
