If you want something that everyone will be talking about but few people own - Grenadier. If you want something that will drum up some volume on the build side, probably LC (and it NEEDS the work - seriously). The Lexus - is/can be capable but i would probably ask how many of those owners are really doing builds and hitting the trail. Maybe “urban builds” for them?
This is a great analysis.. But most people weren't planning on building out the GX460's. Prices came down, aftermarket accessories became more accessible and now it could be one of the more popular rigs to build out. Maybe in a few years the GX550 could even rival the Jeep community..
Please go with a Grenadier. It’s such a new and interesting platform. I think the people that buy that are more likely to actually take it off road because its already skewed heavily in that direction. Also no other US centric RUclips channels are building one. I can see new Toyota and Lexus builds on other channels.
I'd love to see your take on the GX550 Overtrail--approaches to improving clearances (e.g., ground clearance, and approach, departure, and breakover angles), while preserving (or improving) stock suspension geometry and travel (replacement control arms, coilovers, etc.) Thanks for the outstanding content. Keep 'em coming Subscribed! GX550 Overtrail+ 2455 miles
Fellow GX460 owner here that’s built for overland/expedition travel. Between the three I’d say the LC is meh at best. The GX550 is the best of that platform by a long shot. Obviously I like the GX but… If I had the funds to build a new dream rig right now. I’d go Grenadier Quartermaster on 37’s with a full Australian flatbed canopy build. I’d love to see Long Range America figure out an extended tank for the Quartermaster. Fuel range is one of my biggest concerns on that platform.
We couldn't agree more! The GX550 is a competent vehicle and can turn heads at trailheads. Once the Quartermaster becomes available, we might use your comment as a starting point.
The owner of Ineos also owns Belstaff. GP factor makes a better bullbar. I get that they are the local competitr- but they have some good stuff. the Grenadier is infinitley more capable off road- I own one. the shifter is a PIA but an easy adjustment. Dealer support is fantastic, and the dealer near you guys has a stellar reputation. I want to modify mine. I'd love to see what you guys come up with. Its a massive improvement from my Wrangler.
Listening the dialogue and where your headspace was for most conversation for design cues, run with GX550 and it V6,, I went different direction since I like looks of Grenadier and how third party market is building out and more importably love it drive train,, it is fantastic at high altitude running the trails and roads in SW Colorado San Juan Mountains and out in Moab. For me if you wanted FJ80 this more it successor.
A new vehicle platform has many what-ifs, and we are cautious about having high expectations. However, this could be the perfect vehicle to build into an Overlanding beast!
Enjoyed your video! I would like to see after market development for the GX550 (I do like LFD products) over the hybrid LC 250 or the Grenadier. I'm biased as I overland with a 2010 GX460 now. Would not by a hybrid and want the Toyota reliability.
It’s so crazy how you took a completely different bash only approach with the Grenadier. What happened to the “what do you like”, “what don’t you like” format you used on the first two. This feels like a paid promotion for Lexus/Toyota.
I built out an Earth & Black Onyx GX550 Overtrail+ and it came out to $78,160 and at my local Toyota dealer they have LC 250 LC trim models for $77,xxx before tax etc. GX 550 Overtrail+ $75,900 Earth & Black Onyx 850 Cool Box 170 Moonroof Delete -1,100 Rock Rails 990 DPH 1,350 Total $78,160 I would rather get the non hybrid larger engine. There is a video by Engineering Explained about how hard Hybrid systems are for engines.
Not sure if the high price tag on the more luxurious models of the LC250's is justified. GX550 seems like it is a much better deal for the off-roading enthusiast
Ok everyone let us be very clear so everyone can stop this crap. The “new” Land Cruiser is not a real Land Cruiser. It is a Land Cruiser Prado, a light duty suv/wagon. It is funny how Toyota decided to end the 200 series production because of sales being so low and the cost was so much but now you have idiots paying the same money almost for this “new” Land Cruiser as the old 200 series was. Just be honest, overlanding, especially in America was only hyped during Covid and now manufactures want to bring these fake “overland” vehicles to market. Very few maybe five vehicles in the U.S. that are being produced now could actually withstand real overland work. The payloads are minuscule, towing is pathetic, fuel tanks are tiny and no reliable diesel options. The new Tacoma is a joke, the new tundra is a joke, Nissan doesn’t even make anything worth mentioning, Chevy only has the heavy duty trucks which are plagued with issues along with ford and ram so stop saying these vehicles are worth a shit or you should build one. It is all marketing so you can slap the newest crap on then sell it to customers who don’t even need this shit. We have an imported 100 series diesel that upgraded to a newer 5 speed automatic with suspension and 33 inch tires. We have bar work front and back and a roof rack with our big Eezi awn tent. This rig can tow and haul and the fuel range fully loaded is 620 miles and all of this comes with a weight that is 300 pounds under the max payload
Funny how the new Land Cruiser did as well (and actually better on the hardest trail) when TFL compared it to a 80 series Land Cruiser that had a 2 inch lift and 33s. Oh and that 1958 trim only had street tires on it. Also car and driver did a flex test and it was as good as the outgoing 200 series was. But somehow it’s not a real Land Cruiser?!
Grenadier is the way. I have a 200 and an older G, the 250 is a nice car but not a good truck. The grenadier is the spiritual successor to the 200 and G.
If you guys fabricate high clearance bumpers and sliders for the GX550 will be super head turning.
High clearance bumpers and sliders would completely change the look! And it would look gorgeous
GX550 is the way to go!
Seems like this is becoming a pretty popular answer!

This is precisely where our head is at also!

I currently own a built GX460. I'd love to see MainLineOverland build out the Lexus GX550.
There are so many amazing GX460's on the road today. It would definitely be fun to work on this new platform!
Quartermaster on LeTech portals and a rear tray and slide on camper.
I like the way you think!

Love that you traded in the wrangler for the grenadier! The capability of the grenadier has everyone in the shop pretty excited
Weren't all Ineos owners supposed to get a Belstaff jacket with their purchase? But no jackets, and now Ineos production is halted? What gives?
@@MainLineOverlandSourcing of the seats seems to be the stumbling point. Recaro filed for German Chapter 11.
I think the 60kg weight limit is just for the loose, flimsy cover over that small cubby. Not the entire cargo area.
A goose gear plate system should fix any potential weight restrictions.

Trying to remember if you made even one positive comment regarding the Grenadier. Absolutely love mine.
A new vehicle platform has many what-ifs, and we are cautious about having high expectations. However, this could be the perfect vehicle to build into an Overlanding beast!
GX550 OT+ with 74Weld portals would be KILLER. Either that or a Grenny with 35’s and tune.
Agreed! An adjustment to the overall stance of both of these platforms would completely change the look.
60kg ? Are you kidding me? I am double that. Usually when I move i have few hundred lbs in trunk. Toyota WTH
Yep.. Its a little concerning.
Australian build canopy Quartermaster. Partner with Dirtbox
Quartermaster isn't available in the states just yet... But once it is we'll be all over it!

Thanks for watching the video! And I totally agree, Toyota's reliability is definitely weighing into our final decision
If reliability is valued keep your GX460 until the wheels fall off then put on Portals.
Anyone and everyone will be doing LCs. Differentiate your channel by doing the GX. And compare it to the polar opposite in approach, the Grenadier.
I like the way you think!
10:58 the lightness of the LC steering wheel really was very light. My Tesla Model Y had heavier steering and my Tacoma has hydraulic.
Steering wheel response is essential when off-roading, which might be a severe factor when we pick our next rig.
3:02 the old Tacoma never had a seat height adjustment lever, the lever was for the backrest.
This is true.. if only it did
Definitely the grenadier.
Copy that!

GX 550 Overtrail+ $75,900
Earth & Black Onyx 850
Cool Box 170
Moonroof Delete -1,100
Rock Rails 990
DPH 1,350
Total $78,160
I would rather get the non hybrid larger engine. There is a video by Engineering Explained about how hard Hybrid systems are for engines.

I’m biased to the Grenadier as I sell them… as a matter of fact that was me on 7:36 in the white dress shirt
They are an amazingly capable vehicle right off the lot.. a lot to be excited about
The gx is just too sick the others cant compete
Definitely one of the better-looking rigs out of the 3..

Hey we all wish the 200 Series wasn't discontinued in North America, but we have to work with what we got.

I wish I could somehow get a 2023 Land Cruiser 70 series (wagon, Ute or Troopy) here in the states from a LHD country.
Grenadier is the way. I have a 200 and an older G, the 250 is a nice car but not a good truck. The grenadier is the spiritual successor to the 200 and G.
Land Cruiser-you’ll reach, more people that way-
Agreed, that is definitely one of the selling points for this platform!
The GX Overtrail is not much more than the LC trim. They sounded disappointed in the LC 1958 trim interior bits.
