Why Most Orange Juice Comes From Brazil, Not Florida
HTML-код

- In the United States, orange juice is synonymous with Florida. It may come as a surprise, then, to look at the fine print on a bottle of Tropicana and Simply Orange and discover that part of the product isn't from the Sunshine State after all. It's from Brazil.
Orange juice is big business in Brazil. After a series of frosts swept through Florida in the 1960s, devastating orange groves, Brazil met that deficit with its own supply, starting with frozen concentrate orange juice. Then, in 2005, citrus greening disease, which had spread throughout the world from China, arrived in Miami. It rendered oranges in affected groves inedible, resulting in a 55 percent decline in production over the next decade. In response, Florida's orange growers raised OJ prices by nearly $2 per gallon, causing bottlers to turn to cheaper Brazilian OJ.

Why Most Orange Juice Comes From Brazil, Not Florida | CNBC
Brazil is about 47 times bigger than Florida...
yeah but most of it can be framed
Only the coast line is developed though. Farms are unable to exist deep in the Amazon because it is impossible to build infrastructure (road and rail) there.
but only about a third of Brazil's land is used in agriculture

YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT BRAZIL
But, I'll help you, first you need to know that the Amazon forest is in North Region of Brazil (Região Norte do Brasil), second go make some research about Agriculture in Center-West (Centro-Oeste), South-East (Sudeste) and South (Sul) regions of Brazil, you will find out that Brazil produces more meat, fruits and cereals than the United States, you will find out that Brazil is the world leader of Agriculture! 🇧🇷❤️
But São Paulo which produces alone 98% of Brazilian orange is something like 1/2 of the size of California or less.
Talk about fake news! Modern slavery? Brazil has one of the most complex labor legislation in the whole word. The Brazilian legislation has, as a whole, thousands of items that must be observed and meet the criteria of the International Labor Organization. Last year, in the state of Sao Paulo alone, the orange sector created more than 46.000 formal jobs.

Gods2ndFavoriteBassPlyr yes , those laws were created by the government to ensure a better work conditions but it also causes a large cost of labor. Every large or medium company have to accept then , if they try to cheat the laws the government will probably charge the company.
sadly not all the brazilians have the rights that the legislation ensures. Just google it. Even with our very strict laws you will find several cases of modern slavery in Brazil. The employers will do anything to get as much as they can from their employees. If no one is looking for them, slavery happens. boom
here's a fun fact:
The traditional orange cultivar grown in the US (Washington Navel Oranges) actually came from a mutation of a Brazilian orange tree in the early 1800's
Whoa! That’s cool
Guess what, Brazilian people are protected by very strict laws against slavery. There is no way you can export anything in the country if your whole production line isn't certified by the government. Yeah, they tax everything, including payroll, so it's pretty obvious that any thing made in Brazil and sold outside is completly free of the BS in this video. Plus, Brazil have competitive market share in pretty much any food sector in the world, it's just our speciality. Don't get salty because your oranjes are more expensive, we are a farm based country for more than 500 years now and hopefully 500 more years to come
You are a liar, labour agents are constantly finding slave labour across the country they find it at sugar cane, orange, coffee plantations and construction sector as well.
I suppose the question is not whether there are laws to protect the working class, but whether those are actually implemented.
Actually, oranges are kind of cheap here, but I speak purely from a US consumer's perspective. Converted, the cost might seem high in local currency, but USD3.50 is not all that expensive for 12 navel oranges in a bag. USD5 for a gallon of orange juice, well, not bad either.
Anyway, I love your Tramontina (most of my kitchen stuff) and Obrigado (Coconut water) :)

Lol did you know at least 10% of history of brazil, the government are corrupt always was
The problem is that the video says that the LAWS in Brazil are weaker to the workers, which is a complete lie (and I say as someone that knows from both countries). It also says things like "weeks without payment", well, of course, the payments are monthly
what is strange is, in Brazil we don't drink bottled oj, only natural juice.
yes, there's something special in cutting some oranges in half and squeezing it to get the juice, i prefer that to bottled juice
Its easier to move the whole oranges from Ribeirão Preto to São Paulo than moving it to USA.
Ou é natural ou é aquele suquinho Tang top
There is plenty of bottled juice in Brazil, and often times it's not even juice, or made from concentrate. At least in the more affluent areas.
No difference who cares
In Brazil we are payed per month, not week lol
This looks like a propaganda, there’s a lot of untrue facts that also are being interpreted in a way that forces a reality that’s not so present in Brazil’s scenario
Dont worry, Coca-cola has condemned the free orange market. Thanks coke!! /s
This guys are insane, looks like Globo, based in lie
But this is for an American audience, and they have different ways of negotiating and thinking of salary periods than Brazilians. Also, even though there are many labor legislation, it doesn't mean there aren't irregularities here and there from employers.

Is being paid per month better than per week or two?
As usual, I always learn more from the comments than the video;special thanks to the Brazilian contributors.
OMG! The Brazilian OJ is cheaper because the slavery? Guys, before to do the video, please come to Brazil to see our crops. It's one of more efficients of the world. I really don't know what you knows about Brazil.

They just like to point anything that's not american as worse, and so they must say there has to be a scam if they are in any way loosing in something.
I agree that I would have more faith in his statements if he or another reporter working on this story had actually gone down to Brazil to research it first-hand.
Slavery was very efficient, what's your point
All U.S. News is fake news.
I live in a small town in Brazil where the second largest business is an orange farm that exports most of its production to the us. I have visited the farm several times and I can say that what the video says is not true. In order to produce enough oranges, most of the production is mechanized and all remaining workers are constantly monitored by government agencies, both federal and state. With almost 85% of the Brazilian population living in cities it is impossible to have a large-scale system of agriculture based on slave labor.
Recently farms in Bento Gonçalves were caught in slave labor related to grape juice and wine production.
@@pedromendesrbd grape
There is no a "modern slavery" in orange fields in Brazil. I'm an agronomist and I can say that this journalist didn't came to Brazil to write that. The agriculture here is very modern, we have an appropriate climate with a fertile soil, pesticides are expensive due the high price of the dollar and no one waste more than what is needed.
José Rosil that’s not what I heard from people who I spoken who where there, and that’s not what I saw when I traveled over there to look at their citrus industry
Carlos Sanchez where did you traveld? Did you takes pictures? Labor laws In Brazil are intesive and just few spots In central and north regions has some problems with bad farmers
lame excuses can be spotted easily.
Labor laws in Brazil is totally worker friendly far more than any country and the judiciary aways stays in the worker side...kinda sad...because it drive investment away (I have worked in a Chinese company that buy corn, coffee and soy).
@@dotamaze hes talking the truth( at least about the slavery stuff), brazilian labor laws are heavily enforced, we do have slavery in isolated farms where its hard for the authorities to reach but its a great minority
This is ridiculous. The orange juice is produced by modern farms who respects brazil's work laws.
Don't worry, we know CNBS is Leftist political crap always looking to accuse corporations of anything. Fake news as always.
That's how you a make a country hate other. Create false arguments that this country destroyed their economy and afterwards tell that they have slaves and so that's the reason the products are cheap. Simply pathetic!!!
Yeah this video is weird Florida is a state and I'm sure orange juice was made there but not anymore it's not a big deal. 😂
I am an agronomist who has worked in the Florida Citrus groves. Brazil has more land than Florida and in some ways better growing conditions. Florida has had many citrus groves wiped out by the greening bacteria. Florida's citrus will rebound as more bacterial resistant groves are planted, but I doubt it will ever return to what it was before. In my opinion Brazil has better land for growing citrus and it will most likely remain as the worlds top citrus producer.
Last Christmas I went to the tower in Minneola and looked down at the landscape. Once what was farmland for miles around is now residential development. What few orange groves I saw were up for sale. There were quite a few strawberry fields.
And I blame republicans they don't care about the environment.
@@ccbsnyc yeah, Florida growers are getting out of the game. 90% of orange trees are infected with the bacteria.
Brazil has more warm land, so we can grow more orange. By the way, I wonder for example how many deaths are caused in the US by agrochemicals since it is the country that uses them the most and it doesn't have a universal health care system (Brazil does).
@House Stark The rainforest is some. 3000km away from where orange is grown in Brazil. But anyway, why doesn't the US stop growing soy and replants the natural flora along the south and the mid-west. I'm sure the world will follow the american example.
@House Stark if you don't understand about Brazil geography (which is perfectly fine) you shouldn't talk about it. The country is not a huge forest, don't talk about what you have no knowledge of.

São Paulo state produces alone 30% of world orange juice. Why McDonalds don’t make their headquarters there
Because they like law and order and having a ready made supply of qualified people to run their headquarters?
They need semi-slave workers.
We are not semi-slaves at all. We dont have much money, but we have lots off rights as workers, and, most important, brasilians are very happy people. Please talk about China and not Brasil
Is there any proper orange juice in the U.S.????? Just asking....
Everyone who goes to the U.S. says that American restaurants do not sell natural juice (only concentrated, processed one). In Brazil, you can find pure, natural orange juice in any small restaurant or snack bar.
Now now.... arguing that there's "modern slavery" in the orange industry in Brazil is really really dumb.
There are a few spots - specially mining in the Amazon region and some real state contractors - where authorities found people working in conditions similar to slavery, and they've been working hard to investigate and adress the problem, but not similar has ever been identified in any of our orange fields. I know some families who live in the countryside of São Paulo and make a living out of this activity.
Of course there is. Tons of places sell natural OJ, and its obviously very situational.
Consider how myself, being from Canada, nearly every place serves maple syrup if they have pancakes/waffles. Go to Brazil or India, SUPER far away from where it is made, and you won't find as much, its the same deal with oranges, or any other product.
At some grocery stores you can buy true fresh squeezed orange juice but a half gallon bottle is almost $20 usually.
Yes, duh, companies in America make a big deal of labeling their products not from concentrate, and you can find just straight orange juice in basically any store, or you could, you know, buy oranges and juice them.
What's interesting to note is that while most American orange juice comes from Florida, most oranges for eating come from Southern California. Apparently something about the SoCal climate is more conducive to growing oranges.
HotWax93 I live in Florida and I tried an orange from a tree growing in the woods and it was inedible. It was unbelievably nasty.
There are farms everywhere in Brazil, it's cultural and easy to buy fresh vegetables anywhere you go, and atleast 90% of them are natural, Brazilian modified crops are only for exporting. So I'm sure there are far more deaths because of pesticides with your giant "fresh" fruit and vegetables in the us than anywhere else in the world.
Just came from Sam's Club and bought OJ that was more expensive than usual and then this popped up in my feed explaining it. Lol
So, this video it is all wrong. Workers in Brazil are not slaves.
Please, do not believe in this.
Yeah, and actually we have more worker's rights like an unemployment fund (FGTS), minimum wage policy, an extra payment per year, paid vacation a month per year, and lots of holidays, the thing is that the average wage in Brazil 4x times lower than the minimum in U.S but it's not slavery at all. (sure, we had big taxes but, food and fruits it's very abundant and cheap)
Brazil's labour rights are stronger than US'. That's why formal employment is uncommon in Brazil. The biggest the rights, the least amount of jobs you create.
BS! Brazilian workers have Far more rights than American workers. They only get paid less here in Brazil is because the dollar is 4x higher than Brazilian Real.
What rights do the Brazilian workers have?
@@Darrencardinal First: they work 11 months and get paid 13 months.

The whole reason is that Brazil has a comparative advantage at orange juice production over the US. Why do you need a whole video to say this?
Did you not watch the video? There were other factors that disadvantaged Florida like weather, crop damage/disease, property value etc.

Fresh squeezed is better, it doesn't require pasteurization or flavor packs, big names like Florida's Natural and Tropicana are all bad news and use Flavor Packs which are made by perfume manufacturers to bring back the flavor of the orange in the juice because after they pasteurize it it sits in a silo for up to a year and loses its flavor so they add it back, its all a big industry secret thats often overlooked!!
Thing is they don’t say 100% from Florida. Also, many people don’t read labels.
Are you kidding me? Brazilian workers have an absurd number os rights compared to US workers. Thats one of the reasons we overthink 10 times before hiring someone. Worst place to hire someone ever. Match that with poor qualification, bad economy and a culture that blames business man for poverty and you will understand why so many people here are unemployed trying to reach the US
A Coke and a vitamin c tablet are pretty much equivalent.
Funny how RUclips recommended this video to me after I got addicted to Florida's Natural products
I've seen lots of orange fields in Southern California, but I never hear about it.
Why does it matter? It’s just orange juice
Gaby Gurl the video wasn’t about orange juice, it was about CNBC shaming brasil falsely and for no reason just to make them sound Bad and make America sound better, basically imperialist propaganda
@@bluemountain8110 that and to attack Trump.
It’s about money too
lol, so the US have better laws to protect workers? We have a lot lof laws "to protect" workers in brazil, and that's why they leave to the US, where they can work as many hours as they please, they can negotiate directly with the boss. Here the big ol' state regulates every single aspect in the employer/employee relation (Last year they approved a bill (working reform) that give the employers/employees more freedom to negotiate between themselves). Here the "worker protecting laws" hurts them very badly, there's too much rights, too many taxes on everything, so the cost of production is higher and so is the final price. Very biased fake report, especially in the end throwing shade "respond at the polls in 2020". Fake news MAD because Trump won florida and will win again.
Trump lost.
I live in Argentina and mostly of the oranges are from northen Argentina, the brazilian orages are in the market also but the flavor is a little more sour compared to the argentinian but im from Perú in the southern coast where we have oranges, those are sweet like honey because we dont use the pesticide its use in other countries. The only bad thing is we only have those delicious oranges in June, July and August for us. Then we get oranges from the Peruvian jungle or northen of Perú but flavor is not the same.
Bottled orange juice is the ultimate lack of care for food. The diffference from fresh pressed is shocking. I don't understand how freshly pressed juice is so rare in US.
The new depression is upon us
I still think the best Brazilian export is their beautiful women
Stop objectifying women 🙄
I don't think they migrate abroad very much
I will buy Florida oj today itself from India
..it's available in foodhall
I live right by a factory in Florida lol
Now we know how Trump got so sickly orange! From Mar-a-lago....
FourDollaRacing hilarious 😒🙄😒
He's so fat he should go to "Mar-a-Lardo" instead!
LOL ....get the unemployed ppl to plant and harvest oranges. Make America orange again.
WTF. ?!?! Willing to cut into Brazilian cocaine production.... for Orange juice? That's a disproportionate fun to health Factor
Great Video. I'd like to see more like this.
In an investment update report, the WGC said increased consumer demand and reversal of extreme bearish speculative positioning could help push gold prices up from their recent 1.5-year lows. The report added they see potential for a rebound even in the face of a strong U.S. dollar.
“The dollar's strength has been one of the most important drivers of gold's performance this year as confrontational trade rhetoric and sanctions has so far played in favor of the U.S.,” the analysts said. “But gold may rebound due to both technical and fundamental reasons.”
How is this related to ORANGE JUICE (the theme at hand in this video)?
Either this individual COMMENTED THE WRONG VIDEO (it can happen) or TRIED TO THROW SPAM AT US but was UNSUCCESSFUL....
Because we have Jailson Mendes
I’m glad I drink Florida’s natural.
I guess I’m going to pick me up some Florida’s Natural next time I’m at the grocery store.
suco de laranja
Adding personal opinion about politics on an orange juice video, typical American journalism.
So it would be better if they specifically *didn't* mention that other countries have put tariffs on us orange juice?
I live in Florida and I don't think I've ever seen an orange farm xD guess I'm looking in the wrong places
Lmfao the slow motion lady.
Wait a second, Brazilian labor rights aren't weaker then those in the US. It's the enforcement that is weak, which affects mostly rural workers, many of which work in the production of mass exported products, like orange, sugar cane and soy.
Brazilians, actually, enjoy a great deal more rights than American workers, such as 30 days a year of paid vacancies, 13 salary, paid sick leave etc.
Orange Juice tastes horrible these days.
Could be changed for Florida o.j
Yago G. Oliveira I thought Florida OJ would taste better.
@@AJ-xm4xc We have other species of oranges. Our oranges is green and have more frutose (sugar fruit)
nature giver There must be a way to get decent juice.
It tastes great for me...
My OJ comes from behind the bushes, with leather gloves on. Alright, goodbye.
There are still some brands that I believe specify strictly from Florida and some are Natalies, Florida's Natural, and Coral Reef to name three. Indian River may be another but the other's are from only Florida Oranges.
i like coca cola, but not pepsi, however i do drink tropicana
Florida does not produce as much oranges as it used to because the best orange producing crops were closer to the gulf coast. It was warmer and the soil was perfect for growing citrus. Look it up! Soooo the orange groves moved to the center of the Florida...then came Disney World....Look it up! Look at central Florida now. Tons of people have move to Florida. I've been here for 60 years...
Hurricanes, really cold winters.....orange plant diseases...We still produced a lot of oranges but now people have move in. It's as simple as that! No room left for the massive orange groves that Florida used to have.
I could careless Orange Juice makes me feel sick for some reason unless it’s fresh squeezed
What I got out of this is that the reason it's important for US/FL to continue to produce oranges, is so Brazil's apparent neglect of its workers is slightly decreased?
Freaking brazil
@@yagogabriell it was a joke
D NOT WORRY TRUMP IS HERE, orange king with the special goldenrussian shower so save
"Golden Russian Shower"... That sounds like P--

I'm looking at a jug of Tropicana OJ right now and the label states "Squeezed from fresh Florida oranges, never any water or sugar added."
What's the point of making that statement if it isn't true?
