There is nothing on earth more beautiful, seductive, and more singularly terrifying than Annie Lennox's eyes in this video. That woman owned the era on a level nobody even understood at the time.
If Blondie's Debbie Harry was the first New Wave Aphrodite then Annie Lennox was the second. She showed the way with "Sweet Dreams," though that had some Marlene Dietrich moves. " Love is a Stranger" Annie just let's all her sexy, insane introspection out and shows the world her dazzling eyes and devastating beauty. What makes this one of the best songs ever? I'm glad you asked! 1. The haunting keyboard arrangement is hypnotizing. 2. The pulsing beat is subtle, but perfect. It adds, but doesn't distract. 3. Annie's icy cool, emotional vocals help create a mystique and enchantment. 4. The production has held up; they didn't fall into many of the 80s production traps that now sound dated. 5. And, perhaps most importantly, Annie's biting, acerbic dissection of love. She refused to play the role expected of women in music where they long for love or are lost without it or are complete with it. Nope! Not Annie! If you're still reading, you're truly a fan! 😄
And at 2:23 Dave Stewart appears to have an Apple Watch and an iPhone a few decades before anyone else. But I agree such a great song. I love the way she does insanity - the "obsession" just gets more and more extreme as the song goes on.

I like to give credit to Dave Stewart, as he created the surreal feel of the instrumentation that I loved as a child before I paid attention to the lyrics. Eurythmics is the peak of synthpop.
Annie's voice is incredible, and it syncs with the intensity of the electronica, but I also agree that Dave hit it out of the parks with his his skills on this one.
Yes, it's production quality that has never been equaled, and probably never will be. Even with today's technology and auto-tune etc... I think it would be very difficult to re-create the same atmosphere, and very unlikely the singing voice. Only Ultravox could get the same quality and lushness out of synths/rhythm boxes/FX etc...
@@BG-il2ym SO true. What I find amazing is that so many of Eurythmics' songs sound good with some bass or no bass. I sometimes listen to this song with the bass cranked all the way down or turned up to where I can baaarely feel the woofer vibrate. Another example, listen to Thorn in my side with the bass turned down then again turned up. remember hearing that as a kid for a first time. Dad played it one sunny weekend. Instantly cemented my love towards New wave, electronica and Eurythmics.
When Opera meats electronic disco. This is & always has been a truly stunning record, Annie Lenox's opera level vocal talents, Dave Stewart's incredible keyboards & top quality production that has seldom been matched. In this video Annie Lenox proves that she's one of those people who knows exactly how to use her eyes, either a natural talent or acting lessons, aided by Brady's excellent video direction. A true classic in every way.
Annie Lennox has a beautiful voice and creative. She makes her songs more special on Music Videos 🎶🌹 Dave Stewart is amazing in his performance as well. They are compatible in working together 👍
Her voice is so powerful and dynamic. There are some songs that give me goosebumps every time i listen. Most youtube videos have at least a few negative comments from detractors. It is a testament to Eurythmics greatness that I cannot find a single one for this video! ❤
Still my favorite Eurythmics song and video. Incredible after all these years. Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox ... what a combo! The production, while sounding straight out of 1982, is so unique and so original, in my opinion. And then we have Annie's incredible vocal performance. Throw in an incredible video on top of that ... and wow!
My absolute favorite Eurythmics tune! I still recall hearing it for the first time on "Rock Over London" back in '83 and being blown away! There was also a fascinating piece in Musician magazine detailing how the instrumentation and sound effects were done.
1982, at 14 years old, I listen with wonder to this production, 2023, at 55 years old I still listen with just as much wonder to this technological gem.
The music was so engaging, and Annie's voice was so compelling it was easy to forget how beautiful she was. What a towering figure in the history of music!
My favourite video and song of all time. This was filmed in Little Venice in London in September 1982. I saw it first in 1983 when I was 13. After the 70s, it was like a revelation. It hit me right between the eyes. They were so far ahead of their time. This was nearly forty years ago -- yet seems so modern -- complete with Apple watch and iPhone. Imagine in 1983 seeing a film of a song from 1943? That would seem like ancient history. But watching this from forty years ago, doesn't seem long at all. I finally made my pilgrimage last week to the flat on Clifton Gardens where this was filmed. It still looks the same.
Still gives me goosebumps when I listen to it today. The first time I saw this video I was in grade 6-I remember it being so interesting and nothing like what my parents listened to. Back then we had to wait for friday nights to watch friday night videos to get to see it again. Today we are so lucky to be able to search this up on RUclips. Thank you for posting this. Still dancing to this amazing song.
Sweet dreams was great but this is their best song by far. I remember hearing this when I was 14, it totally resonated with my first true (and unrequited) adolescent crush like no other song ever did. I’m 48 now and happily married but this song can still take me back to my youth in an instant.

Me too, Life long Metal head and when I 1st heard this was blown away by the sheer brilliance of this iconic song.
remember hearing that as a kid for a first time.
“It’s savage & its cruel
& it shines like destruction…” gets me everytime.
Annie Lennox has a beautiful voice and creative. She makes her songs more special on Music Videos 🎶🌹 Dave Stewart is amazing in his performance as well. They are compatible in working together 👍
Absolutely insanely brilliant vocal arrangement! One of my favorite Eurythmics songs.
Her voice is so powerful and dynamic. There are some songs that give me goosebumps every time i listen. Most youtube videos have at least a few negative comments from detractors. It is a testament to Eurythmics greatness that I cannot find a single one for this video! ❤
Just brilliant what more can you say... 😊
Still my favorite Eurythmics song and video. Incredible after all these years. Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox ... what a combo! The production, while sounding straight out of 1982, is so unique and so original, in my opinion. And then we have Annie's incredible vocal performance. Throw in an incredible video on top of that ... and wow!
You gotta think with the tech back then vs. what we have now for this song to sound this good was pushing the envelope technologically
Same here Stepan (I was born on 1968, too)!
just as I am at 54 years old:).
same same
Same as you , Indeed!.....and millenniial music sucks!
The music was so engaging, and Annie's voice was so compelling it was easy to forget how beautiful she was. What a towering figure in the history of music!
1982. This song stills packs the dance floor late night on '80s nights in 2015...
+Cedric Herrera Still sounds as punchy as the day I first heard it. Utter class!
+Cedric Herrera packs the dance floor anywhere
+Cedric Herrera That's cool!!
That 'stumble in the debris' harmony is timeless genius!!
Early 1980's synth pop, happy years!!!
so true ! 🎯
I will try to live in those rocks and stone forever…
This is one of the songs that defines my youth and 40 yrs later its still an aaxing song. Thank you for this!
She was so beautiful, you couldn't take it all in at the time. Now we're all older, it's had time to sink in.
Annie Lennox never fails to mesmerize me, her voice and her looks is everything,
even to this day!
Absolutely one of the finest pop songs of all time.... the lyrics just build emotion before each breakdown... wonderful!
This is music!
Pure brilliance says it all
One of the greatest tunes ever. Powerful, haunting & seductive
