I was wearing my headphones playing the drums and had some music playing on the computer. I wasn't listening to it, just had it on in the corner. Heard some melody that bled through my headphones that instantly reminded me of this song. Took some help online to remember the song. Earliest memories of being alive just come flooding back. What a great song. Wish I could experience those times again, to feel the love of my family when were all closer, living in the same house and not out of the nest yet.
I am 75 and remember growing up watching Bette Davis reruns. The song goes a long way in capturing Bette Davis. But Kim Carnes has by far done a superlative performance of this song. I remember Kim's rendition of this song in the early 1980's What an outstanding performer Kim Carnes is.
I didn't get to know my mom.. she passed when I was three.. but her friend told me what her favorite song was.. and when I feel I need a hug.. I play it.. makes me sad.. but better at the same time.. wishing you well through your journey in life..
This song defined my childhood. I distinctly remember waking up to this song after having eye surgery, this song playing on the radio. I had no idea whether I would be able to see at all, but this song playing in the background, comforted me, its light, memorable guitar line echoing through the post-operation room. As much as I tried to open my eyes, they remained shut, as if stitched shut. At only 8 years old, and unsure of whether I would see again, I clutched onto my mother's hand, trembling in fear. My mom reassured me that the operation was a success, and that I would see with time. As this song played on, I felt her move her hands to the throbbing beat of this song, and I once more willed open my eyes, a shadowy figure of my mom emerging from my small slit of vision. As this song ended, I felt a tear land on her hand -- and then Credence Clearwater Revival began to play.
It's because the synthesizer was so prevalent in the 80's. Furthermore, use of the synthesizer implies that the atmosphere is quiet, and who doesn't like peace and quiet? In a room full of noise one might still be able to hear a guitar being plucked in the corner but a synthesizer would be lost in the din. So when our mind hears a synthesizer it is happy because that means the atmosphere must be quiet enough for our ears to hear it.
80s music has all those bouncy tunes, even with a somewhat dark tone in the lyrics, while in the 90s it was all angst. Now that I said that, Jackie DeShannon recorded this in 1974 as more of an R&B take.
I think part of the magic is that music was defined by talent more than appearence. Now you just need to have a "look" and auto-tune will handle the rest. When you open up the field to even the "ugly" people, you are exposing yourself to a wider range of talent and potentially great music. When your looks are what matters most, the field narrows drastically.

When I was pregnant with my son 20 years ago, every time this would come on the radio or I would play it, he would start dancing in my belly. After he was born it continued. Car seat dancing. Hanging onto the sofa dancing. Grabbing mom to dance. And of course as soon as he started talking he was singing it. Today it’s part of his play list along with some of the other best of the time. ❤

Sometimes there is a certain heartache to be had when reminiscing, especially to this timeless classic. I remember all my old friends who I have not seen in decades. Where are they now, what are they doing, how did their lives turn out? This is a very beautiful song and I would not have it any other way.

I remember the year my Dad gave me this album for my birthday. Barking at Airplanes is excellent, she had serious talent and Oh! that voice!! It had JUST come out, only 15 days before my 11th birthday, and I listened to that cassettte over and over and over until it finally got eaten by my tape player in the early 90's. I'd always meant to replace it with a CD, but never got around to it. Maybe I can remind my Dad about this; I'm about to turn 44 and I would still love to have this album! (Knowing Dad, he'll think it very sweet that I loved his gift so very much that I want it again, 33 years later!!)
Gift yourself, and him with the CD (if its a good quality print). I turned my mother on to Surrealistic Pillow by Jefferson Airplane, and she found new layers and meaning in that until the day she passed. We had some amazing conversations about what we found in the songs on that album. Music really can transcend generations.

Watching these amazing 80s music videos on RUclips is such a wonderful escape…..and makes me realize how much of our humanity and enjoyment we have lost in the last four decades.
I think this is one of the best performances in the history of popular music; it's as if Kim Carnes was born to sing Bette Davis Eyes. Of course, the song itself is fundamentally good and the arrangement is on point, but it wouldn't be nearly as memorable if it didn't have Carnes on vocals. What I have always liked most about this song is the way that Carnes almost speaks certain lines in a kind of subdued way, only to blast out subsequent lines in full voice and completely in tune. Her instincts in performing Bette Davis Eyes were masterful and she is the reason that the song will continue to mesmerize future generations.
"She's got Bette Davis Eyes" means she's a femme fatale who's out to ruin a man for revenge, money or both through seduction, abuse, deception and manipulation Bette Davis is known for these roles
The beat, the lyrics, the sound of Carnes and the video signifies just how talented the 80s Popstars were. Their hits are timeless and forever classic.
I was obsessed with this song when it came out. As others have mentioned, this song (among many others of the era) is a perfect time machine! Close your eyes and you are transported to those places that were special to you where you heard your favorite songs. This song feels as contemporary as anything i listen to today by current artists, yet I first heard it approximately 40 years ago.Remember Gen Z, we Baby Boomers and Gen Xers were once your age and we lived large out in the world because there were no PCs, Macs, or similar - and certainly no such thing as video games beyond those found in pizza parlors and arcades. So if you see us dancing or moving our out of shape bodies or tapping our feet with closed eyes, please know we are not in the present - we have been transported to the past.
So true. One of my favorite things (I miss) from that era was when a great band came out with an album, me and my friends would just hang out and play the entire album end to end, getting lost in the music. Great memories centered around great songs.
ooh that voice and that synth backing so simple and so seductive a loop. 80's classic that never seems to age. I see similarities to Lauper's time after time that's equally catchy. Great songs!
Wow, this song is amazing. I listened for the 1st time, 3 days ago, I am addicted it. Kim's rusky voice is wonderful. The rhythm is great, what a great vibe
This was my dad's favorite song. I used to play it for him all the time on my record player. He died a little over 2 months ago. I miss you dad and will always think of you when I hear this song.
I *love* Kim Carnes's smokey voice, the old movie references, the metaphorical colloquialisms and the overall sound of this song. This is one of the first videos that I remember seeing when MTV came out (along with Modern English's 'I'll Stop The World and Melt With You', Blondie's 'Heart of Glass' and Rod Stewart's 'Young Turk's) and I instantly fell in love with it. God how I *still* *love* 80's music.
Quote from the keyboardist: "Anyway, we cut ‘Bette Davis Eyes’ totally live at Record One: every note, the percussion, even the [electronic] Synare and Kim's vocals; there was never an overdub. I think we did three takes and the one we used was take one." This song sounds so incredibly sublime and the fact that it was recorded live on the first take makes this even more amazing.
Kim Carnes is a boss and this song rules just as it did back in '81, when I first saw the video. I was four at the time and didn't realize she was making music history. It's cool that Bette Davis herself was flattered by the song as such an honor to her and it was a fitting tribute. Songs like this come along only once in a while.
This song broke all records as it sat at #1 for months, it wasn't broken until "Old Town Road by Lil Naz X broke the record in 2020, almost thirty years later.
This song brings me an incredible mix of good memories and nostalgia that I can't even explain! 🎶 Every time I listen to *Bette Davis Eyes* by Kim Carnes, it transports me to those magical moments, like everything I lived back then rushes back in a wave of emotion. What a masterpiece!
It's the voice, the music, and the lyrics that make this an amazing song. I believe that 100 years from now, people will still be listening to this song.
My mother passed away 3 months ago and in all this time I am remembering the beautiful moments with her and her tastes. One of her tastes was good, classical music, and I have copied that. She really liked this song. I downloaded songs that she liked and she always played them on the speaker through a USB. She very happy. Beautiful memories through good music. Thank you Kim Karnes for tuning in to this beautiful song. Thanks to her I learned to listen to good music. I play drums and guitar. That's all. I can't help but cry. I miss you and love you so much mom. Love her mother very much. Greetings from Peru.

Sorry dude. I lost my dad when I was 21. That was 83. Then my first wife and I split in 85. Then though I met the love of my life. So the 80s bring back some bittersweet memories. Oh and my first wife looked like Kim Carnes.
I am fortunate enough to have been a teenager in the 80's. I remember listening to this song on the radio when it was climbing the charts. I had no clue that it was going to be a classic.
This was one of those songs that, growing up, entered my radio listening conscience just at the very end of its life on the air. When I heard it last year, I hadn't heard it in all of those 20 years and I was bowled over. What a great song
Weird. It entered my consciousness tonight. I have no idea what the video has to do with the song though. Actually I have no idea what the song is about either. 🤷
the commitment on belting out some of those notes. her vocals are unreal. i mean you can see her diaphragm hitting like a speaker. you can see her passion for singing and how much she gets into the music in this video. geez. this woman was something else..... this is still a great song.
This song is from 1981 so the real Bette Davis was still alive when this song came out. She was interviewed that year and they asked her what she thought about the song. She said she LOVED the song!! She said her grandkids wore the record out and it made her feel so proud. She also wrote a letter to Kim Carnes thanking her! How cool is that?

Watching these amazing 80s music videos on RUclips is such a wonderful escape…..and makes me realize how much of our humanity and enjoyment we have lost in the last four decades.
You got that 100% right... I do the same thing. it brings tears to my eyes sometimes tbh
Song of the year, album of the year, best selling single in the USA that year, spent 9 weeks at number 1 on the charts, and a unique fantastic song!
Bette Davis eyes hit no 1down here in Australia in 1981, one of my favourite songs of the eighties.😊
I had a crush on a girl once, every time I heard this song, it reminded me of her. I guess that's why love songs are eternal, they never get old.
Beautifully said!!!❤❤❤
"She's got Bette Davis Eyes" means she's a femme fatale who's out to ruin a man for revenge, money or both through seduction, abuse, deception and manipulation
Bette Davis is known for these roles
I had too and I was 17 and had an crush to my college class mate... and a girl too if someone wonders:P
Hope you guys meet again
I had a crush on a girl too and this was our song... 9 months later you were born. It must be the genetics...
Songs like this will never die!!!!!
I'm an AA born in 1958 and I found BD so intriguing even as an 8 yr old, she was the best actress I've seen.

super super j'adore j'ai 77 ans mais je ne lasse pas de ses chansons
13Ambro I as well. I as well.😎
ooh that voice and that synth backing so simple and so seductive a loop. 80's classic that never seems to age. I see similarities to Lauper's time after time that's equally catchy. Great songs!
Voice is similar to Bonnie Tyler.
Sounds like a female Rod Stewart too
Wow, this song is amazing. I listened for the 1st time, 3 days ago, I am addicted it. Kim's rusky voice is wonderful. The rhythm is great, what a great vibe
One of the greatest songs of all times and no one else could sing it like Kim Love that voice
Even better than Betty Davis singer.
True
OMG her voice is absolutely magnificent
Yeah, sounds like she's smoked a pack of cigarettes before she's sang. You need to learn real talent.
This was my dad's favorite song. I used to play it for him all the time on my record player. He died a little over 2 months ago. I miss you dad and will always think of you when I hear this song.
that's so touching, RIP
I pray God gives you the strength and courage to bear the lost of your dad...

This song is a classic and it still Rocks my World ! ❤
***** Wow, well seeing a backward/upside down comment was certainly a first. Lol
Quote from the keyboardist: "Anyway, we cut ‘Bette Davis Eyes’ totally live at Record One: every note, the percussion, even the [electronic] Synare and Kim's vocals; there was never an overdub. I think we did three takes and the one we used was take one."
This song sounds so incredibly sublime and the fact that it was recorded live on the first take makes this even more amazing.
Kim says it was take 2
The great Bill Cuomo on the Prophet Synthesizer
Sounds fantastic and perfect from beginning to end!
Always like this song
This song brings me an incredible mix of good memories and nostalgia that I can't even explain! 🎶 Every time I listen to *Bette Davis Eyes* by Kim Carnes, it transports me to those magical moments, like everything I lived back then rushes back in a wave of emotion. What a masterpiece!
It's the voice, the music, and the lyrics that make this an amazing song.
I believe that 100 years from now, people will still be listening to this song.
If they have any taste and sense of the cool...
This song can continue to accumulate years of antiquity and will continue to sound a thousand times better than any song of today.
i agree with you music sucks now adays

It's like a great wine

My mother passed away 3 months ago and in all this time I am remembering the beautiful moments with her and her tastes. One of her tastes was good, classical music, and I have copied that. She really liked this song. I downloaded songs that she liked and she always played them on the speaker through a USB. She very happy. Beautiful memories through good music. Thank you Kim Karnes for tuning in to this beautiful song. Thanks to her I learned to listen to good music. I play drums and guitar. That's all. I can't help but cry. I miss you and love you so much mom. Love her mother very much. Greetings from Peru.
I'm so sorry to hear this, Brother. The pain is a small price we pay for all the love and patience our Moms had with us. I can tell she was a wonderful person who did a great job raising you, based on your message. I recently saw a documentary on infinity by the most renown physicists, with the most elegant equations.. we now know that it is a mathematical certainty that there are planets just like ours and somewhere in the Universe she's there next to you, and always will be. So then love truly will echo through eternity.

The 80's! I'm so lucky to have lived through them, best years of my life!

That 80's sound in (march 1981) Impressive.
Love Kim's vocal delivery... Whispery, raspy & sweet.
the commitment on belting out some of those notes. her vocals are unreal. i mean you can see her diaphragm hitting like a speaker. you can see her passion for singing and how much she gets into the music in this video. geez. this woman was something else..... this is still a great song.

Summer 1981. I had just left school and waitressing and I remember hearing it on the radio playing all the time when I went in the kitchens at work.
Yep..me too! .I had started working as a bartender at a sports bar in new town. This song blared out of the stereo speakers. I wonder what happened to a few of the special people who I met at that stint.
Great song. Sadly they don't make it like this today. I love older music it's the best!
Born in 00’ and I first heard this on American Horror Story. But why do I feel nostalgic for a Era I never experienced? Weird.
Lunched at a diner everyday. Reached behind the jukebox and hit the little known volume up for this.
You made a pro blush with that volume knob secret.
