Dejima is an artificial island made by Japanese people to trade with the western world. For a long time only with Dutch people, because Dutch people didnt force their beliefs towards Japanese people, while other European countries did. The island had the shape of a traditional Japanese fan. I have visited Dejima, its now an open air museum (very lovely). Now a days its not and island anymore, because Japanese people reclaimed land around the island. There are many places in Japan with a Dutch history. You can still visit a place called "Holland House" in Kobe. And there is an entire Dutch themepark called Huis ten Bosch. They built a copy of the Dom Church tower in Utrecht with the same height. 367feet/112meter. And lots of other sights and streets. I bike there, its like you are in Holland. Very surreal. ^_^
I live in a VoC city called Hoorn and its over 650 years old. Some of the famous ppl who come from here are, de jongens van bonte koe en Jan pieterszoon coen
Great reaction to a subject that is dear to me. My family was on the VOC ships in the 17th century and settled in the new trading posts and later, colony. They settled there and remained there until the independence of Indonesia, in 1949. My other part of the family (Mother's side) came to Dutch East Indies, much later, in 1860s and stayed there until 1949. In a way, this is part of my family heritage.
Henry Hudson had no opinion on the first Anglo Dutch war. You gotta keep an eye on the timeline, they're talking about a timespan of roughly 200 years. By the time the first Anglo Dutch war occured in 1652, Henry Hudson had been dead for 41 years. Or at least, he was left adrift in a small boat in the middle of the ocean in 1611, after a mutiny, and was presumed dead. Altho the exact date of his death is therefor unknown, after not popping up in 41 years we can safely assume he was indeed dead by the time that war happened. ;)
There were several East India Companies in Europe at the time, not just the British and the Dutch. France, Portugal, Denmark, Sweden, Genoa and Austria all had their own East india Companies with varying degrees of success. West India Companies were also a thing.
It's quite fascinating, as it was a flourishing era for the Dutch (we call it the Golden Era). It certainly put us on the global map and provided the confidence and resources to establish lasting international businesses, at a much later date, that are well-known today, such as Shell, Heineken, Philips, and more. However, it was also a challenging period with significant damage to other countries, a fact we learn about in high school but is not often emphasized.
Hope you feel better soon man! The Portuguese were the pioneers in the age of exploration. They were the first to the maritime trade routes to Asia. That’s why the Portuguese trade empire was one of the biggest of all time. Sadly for them, they were in an alliance with Spain. So that made them an enemy for the Dutch. Thankfully for the Dutch, many Jews living in Portugal & Spain, fled to the Dutch Republic during the Spanish Inquisition. Many found freedom of religion in cities like Amsterdam. And this way, the Dutch merchants obtained valuable knowledge of the Portuguese trade routes to Asia. Nationalism or patriotism wasn’t a big thing yet, in the 17th century. That’s why many people worked in countries that their own country was a war with. That’s why many Dutch people worked and lived in England, while many English worked and lived in the Dutch Republic. A great example are the Pilgrims, or the Pilgrim Fathers. They actually lived in the Dutch city of Leiden, before the moved to the New World. Henry Hudson simply was a guy trying to make a living out of exploration, and chose the VOC to do it with.
The VOC. Was worth 7.6 Trillion. More than the largest tech companies combined now. And Curaçao and Saba. Are still parts of the Netherlands. Suriname. Just became independent, but when the going gets tough. Do I still need my tax money? Remittances to Suriname. They have Oil, Silver and Gold in the ground. But it is quite corrupt. Greetings from Spakenburg, Netherlands.
@ItsCharlieVest Living in a western coronial contry is like living in North Korea. With 50% income tax. And the product prices determined by the VOC are cheaply below market prices. If you're unemployed in the East Indies. You get tax , work for 2 months without being paid by the VOC
Henry Hudson was just one of the many foreigners in service of the VOC. Nothing special. And indeed, the Netherlands was simultaneously at war with the Spanish, the Portugese, the English, and some of the German states (and with the sea and rivers). Sometimes even France joined in to kill that pesky republic that did not want to see that authority came from God through nobility and thought that authority came from the people. People forget sometimes that colonialism was necessary for survival of the Netherlands at first. And it began as a military undertaking to damage Spanish and Portugese economy.

I recently starting reading "The Nutmegs curse" and it talks alot about the VOC of course, but covers a great deal of the things the video doesnt mention on the ecocide perspective. If there is a Banda Island history video somewhere definitely would hope you could review it!

Great documentary, but the skill of the english speaking world in utterly butchering non english names is dumbfounding. Why are they so arogant/ignorant as not ever try and find out how to pronounce foreign words in an otherwise well researched documentary. Yet they mindlessly butcher any foreign name, by insisting on english pronunciation.

1:05 "Keizer" means "emperor" which comes from the Latin word "Caesar"
