6:00 Dodos were recounted as being very bad tasting and the sailors did not eat them. Other animals like dogs that sailors brought with them did eat dodos though and the thick forest they inhabited that they could hide in was cut down but the Portuguese.

The wages that were eventually paid to VOC sailors weren't that bad. It's just that a Dutch sailor had to survive a few years untill he got back to Holland to get paid. Since most couldn't handle large sums of money, they usually drank and gambled it all away in weeks. Summary: half or more of the sailors never returned. Those that did return, squandered their money away.
