Potato was introduced to Europe at roughly the same time. The Dutch came to Asia to -colonize- trade. They also introduced their culture there and that include the foods.
In Indonesia, potato is well known as ''kentang''. In Japan, it was called ''jaga imo'' back then, which means ''jaga 'bulbs''. Jaga maybe came from Jayakarta, nowadays the port city is well known as Jakarta.
So, in a nutshell, before the birth of internet, the world was connected by the potatoes.

The wages that were eventually paid to VOC sailors weren't that bad.
It's just that a Dutch sailor had to survive a few years untill he got back to Holland to get paid.
Since most couldn't handle large sums of money, they usually drank and gambled it all away in weeks.
Summary: half or more of the sailors never returned. Those that did return, squandered their money away.

Fun fact about the Dodos: many people believe the Dutch hunted them to extinction because they liked they way they tasted. This is entirely false, the Dutch just needed food to survive and the only edible thing they could find were those Dodo Birds, hence the Dutch name ''Walgvogel'' which quite literally translates to ''Disgusting Bird''. Loving the videos Mitsy :D keep up the good work
