  • This video shows a quick upgrade to my home network. I replaced my current 24 port switch with a Ubquiti Unifi Switch Pro 24 POE and added a Unifi Dream Machine. This upgrade also includes a Unifi Access Point AC Pro.

Definitely a good video, I like how simple and straight to the point it is, no talking gibberish. you showed how its all done.

Hey Billy, just some friendly advice -- if you find that your new AP doesn't offer quite enough coverage, try reinstalling it so it's parallel with the floor. APs with built-in antennas are generally presumed to be installed on a ceiling, so they're polarized for best coverage in that orientation.

Thanks for the info! I didn’t know AP’s were supposed to be aimed down. I’ve been lucky, this is the first one that I have installed perpendicular to the floor. Coverage throughout the house is actually excellent. I have UAP IW AC’s for the install as well to supplement since all my rooms have Ethernet jacks, though they really aren’t needed at this point. This video was an experiment to see what the range would be like with an AP in an unideal position. I guess it was a little more unideal than I thought due to the positioning haha!

The ethernet cable between the UDMP and the switch will severely limit your bandwidth due to the internals of the UDM devices. You should get an SFP+ direct attach cable for the jump from the UDMP (port 11) to the switch (port 25 or 26). They're usually under $10 for a short one like this.

That's great network setup you have there. I really like the Unifi equipment it's easy to setup and manage, with enterprise features at an affordable price. I like that all the Unifi devices are managed locally from one spot with Unifi OS console. The Protect NVR's and cameras are also really easy to set up... this is usually a way better option than the WiFi cameras that are all the rave right now.
One thing to note is... The regular Dream Machine (and Dream Router) actually does have a built-in access point, whereas the Dream Machine Pro (what you have) and the Dream Machines SE does not have a built-in access point, but instead have the hard drive bay for NVR storage.
I know you meant the Dream Machine Pro when you said "if you buy a Dream Machine you have to have an access point"... but I just wanted to clarify if someone watching didn't realize there was different Dream Machines available with different features.

nice looking setup! Love the Unifi line of gear from Ubiquiti. Only suggestion I have is to use a SFP DAC from the UDM to the Switch. No real performance gains, other than giving you your one rj45 port back both devices and a short dac looks super clean. *new Sub* keep up the content!

Unless you changed it after your video, but you should put your comcast gateway in Bridge mode. Looks like your DoubleNAT'ing.

Nice. Only big thing I’d recommend is upgrading AP to U6 Pro. Increased my max WiFi speeds to nearly 825Mbps up and down.

I notice this video is fairly recent and thanks for the upload! I’m enjoying watching it so far and am currently halfway though. Is there any particular reason why you didn’t opt for a UDM SE instead of this UDMP? Just curious.

Hi thanks for the comment! I am able to buy Ubiquiti at dealer level pricing since I am an installer. The distributer I work has had the SE out of stock for a while. I just didn’t want to wait any longer as the features weren’t a big enough deal for me to justify the additional cost.

@@billylaguardia I hear you on that lol. If my local Micro Center still stocked the UDM or even the UDR, I’m almost positive I would have went with one of those. I do really like the UDM SE though! I also have a AC lite and a flex mini plugged in to the ports. POE is nice to have from the switch ports; I think I underestimated that part a bit

@@Classicman.43 I will say that even the base level DM is a huge upgrade and totally worth the $. I can troubleshoot while I’m on the road and see exactly what’s happening with the network. Plus the single AP covers my whole house without a problem. I have the AC IW access points to install upstairs, but I haven’t needed them yet.

I recently bought a UDM SE, any reason why you didnt go with a DAC cable to go from UDMP to your switch? It free's up one port on your switch and your udmp.

    • @billylaguardia
      @billylaguardia  Год назад +1

I have more RJ ports than I need at the moment. A DAC cable would certainly free up 2 ports if the need arises.

@@billylaguardiathe switch on the UDM pro only has a 1gb backplate; why exactly would you run a 24 port switch through a 1gb backplate when you have a 10gb uplink from the switch to the router? You're doing it at the RJ45 level and creating a bottleneck as you begin to broadcast more devices. I am just trying to figure out what available ports that are not being utilized has to do with non-blocking throughout? Do you know what the benefits of the 10gbe uplink are?
I have a very similar setup like you, a UDM pro, a Switch 24 PRO, a USW Lite 16, a US-8 port switch, 2 Netgear GC510pps switches, and another Netgear 12 port POE switch. I am using the USW lite 16, usw-8 and all three Netgear switches as access layers switches that in turn plug into my pro switch 24 which handles the L3 for my network. From the switch pro 24, i uplink to the UDM pro via the SFP+ port. I use none of the rj45 ports on the UDM pro since that is the core layer and my switch 24 is acting as my distribution layer. Out of the 24 ports, only 6 RJ45 ports are being used
If you have fios, I would consider connecting the UDM PRO via fiber rather than the RJ45 WAN port. Here are the numbers on the capacity of the Switch Pro 24 that is being ran through the UDM 1gb backplane: Total non-blocking throughput --> 44 Gbps, Switching capacity -->88 Gbps, Forwarding rate --> 65.472 Mpps

I’d advise against that cable. You should get a simple USB audio interface. Those cables may work for mono line level applications. However I’d bet they don’t work with microphones very well hence the bad reviews.

Can someone pinch me, I'm still dreaming... Why would someone install a WiFi AP in the basement, especially when it's the only one for the whole house? A better application is to plug it into an ethernet jack on the main floor, somewhere in the middle of the house. You have 12 or so CAT6 cables running to your patch panel, I'm sure one of those runs to the kitchen or a hallway where it will not get used... Also, your comcast WiFi was giving a poor signal, only because you put it inside a Faraday cage - your steel network rack! LMAO!! That's where all non wireless equipment goes, everything else goes outside of it... I can seriously ramble on and on, but don't want to kill your thunder... Also, never get an AP lite, it's got the worst performing speeds and range, $20-$30 more you can have a more serious performing WiFi AP with more MiMO antennas that reach farther and have more throughput... Not to mention you paid extra for a PoE injector, doesn't matter if it came with the AP, you didn't need it, but still paid extra for them to bundle it together... Good luck! ;)
