Shop Talk Ep. 11 | What Makes A Show Sound Good? w/Ben Adams
Hey Friends! As we inch dangerously close to "podcast" territory, Ben and I discuss what we think are elements to a "good sounding show". We have been busy in the shop for the past few days, I thought it would be cool to set up a camera while we discuss this often debated subject. I'd like to eventually repeat this episode with more audio and civilian friends.

Hey friends! Welcome to episode 2 of "ask a case guy". A customer of ours sent a flypack not built by us for modification. As I say most days: "all cases look the same on the internet", I figured this would be a good opportunity to look at case construction. As my title may imply, this is a bit of a "diss track" on another companies case design. Please watch the end of the video for my general ...

Really cool format!
How did this end up being over 1.5 hrs???
the first 30 sec sold me, I'll watch for sure!
I have some questions. The way you have connected this prevents the circuit from being balanced without pin 2 running through a differential circuit. It seems to me a DI box would take care of this problem. So this is a wire adapter but not an unbalanced to balanced adaptor. Some say to wire the pin 3 to the ground with pin 1 but read some comment that this is dangerous to the input when phantom power gets added so your wiring looks safer.
It’s not supposed to make the signal balanced. It’s just a simple shop test cable allowing unbalanced signals to play nicely with a XLR mic preamp. Pin 3 is the same signal as pin 2, just out of phase. This is why using a TS cable in a TRS jack creates noise: the ground is touching the ring aka pin 3. This cable wires pin 2 to the tip (hot) and pin 1 to the sleeve (ground).
SO WRONG: if you are cutting eq all you are doing is cutting the volume. And in your cause you are cutting the volume then raising it back up on the fader.
Hi, thanks for the video! I really like your brand-heat shrink. Where did you order these? They work awesome. I would like to order some with my brand. Thank you much!🙏🏼☮🙏🏼

You never should mono your PA, it's suposed to be stereo....eq your mic channel if you need to, never main output
Why can’t the PA be mono? Most live engineers mix in mono. The only things that are stereo in mixes are effects, keys, tracks and program music. These sources are hard right and hard left meaning that both speakers are being fed simultaneously with a similar source. If you pan a mono source (say a rack tom) to one side, the other side of the room won’t hear it. Also, why no EQ on the main output? If you are going to make a phase argument, how is main eq any different from channel eq?
How much would you make me one for, would love to have one
Here is a purchase link: www.lmcasesonline.com/d-3-2-l21-30-3-phase-rack-mount-power-distro/
Would rec a band that uses a venue's FOH...would it be ok if the band plugged lead vocal into the 5045 and then split the signal into their monitor ear rack and controlled the threshold/depth themself? or does this need to live in FOH land where FOH controls it?!
It’s line level and should be run and an insert. You could in theory adjust settings from stage, but I’d rather have the sound human work the controls to taste as the show evolves
When using live, would you use this first before eq and compression for a lead vocal?!
I do. Putting this before EQ let’s you use EQ more for color than for notching problem frequencies out.
hmmm, no transformers, no vcas.... what kidn of compressor is it? those two black boxes look like relays...
Nice touch with the laser etched scribble strips! But no bracket on the adapter to keep ut from falling out? Shame on you Billy!
I added a piece of Velcro. I figured it would look cheesy in the video. Though, it is being held in a super strong Hubbell 5362 outlet. No cheap stuff around here!
@billylaguardia The only velcro that is good enough in my opinion is the full nylon stuff. So with nylon hooks and loops. You can hang a train with that stuff! But usually I take the easier route of just getting a 8 or 10mm wide strip of aluminum that gets bend into a u-shaped bracket or I take an angle iron that gets to keep the adapter plugged in. Depends on the possibilities of mounting that bracket/angle iron. And of course they get a nice black heatshrink tubing to cover and isolate them...
Pretty sure I saw a penn elcom logo at least once ..
How did you label their cables? Did you have to re-terminate everything? I'd like to label a bunch of my cables like that, I'd just like to know what you used/did.
I used a dymo 5200 label maker with 1” heat shrink labels. The 1” labels are big enough to handle most connectors. They were tight on the RJ’s and the BNC’s but they fit and shrunk down tightly.
Thats one hell of a Case for an Atem Mini! But Love how much thought you put into cases
I feel like there other big caveat to doing things analog inserts on digital consoles. The first is delay compensation. It takes time for the signal to leave the desk, be processed, and return to the playing field. Anyone who uses waves rigs with goes through this process of finding the latent path and applying delay to every other channel to realign the inputs. Now in your specific case it’s quite possible that the latent path is completely unnoticeable but others they may hear and not understand what’s actually going wrong. The second tip I give to engineers using any type of outboard processing is to program bail out snippets. These are used in the event that one or more of your outboard pieces fail in the middle of the show. If the Neve died have a snippet to recall LR routing if one button instead of a series of buttons… well you know. If you’re into delay compensation based on an insert and it fails have one snippet that fixes the routing, disengages all the channel delay and flips on EQ, Comp and Expander is really helpful.
Also, nice rack.
I'm a big fan of external power sources. That way if the psu starts frying for any reason, it happens away from all the expensive components 💜
Great video!
Hey Billy. I have the M32C and and wondering how to create user routing setting from it considering it doesn’t have an interface? Hope you make a video on it
Same user routing from the ipad / android app and mixing station that you get when connecting to the surface consoles.
@ it shows all the other routing option except for User routing options on the iPad app. Not sure why
@@masonjopes6274 what do you mean by user routing? Glad to help if I can.
@ on the full consoles and on mix edit there’s user routing that basically gives you a way to route exactly how you want. I did find that it apparently doesn’t show up on the iPad. I did wonder though if you had any tips/tricks with the iPad app for controlling the m32c seeing as there is no physical screen and buttons to use like the x32 rack. I’ve gotten well used to it but could always learn more. Such as how some of the effects work for example the de-esser, and also about pre fader/post fader settings like exactly when to use them to make sense. If you can I’d appreciate it. I own the brain with the dl16 and am the sound engineer for my church and let them use my gear but always want to streamline things especially since we will be starting live worship in the new year. Thanks Billy and love the videos!
Hi Billy I need your big help ! I recently bought the M32r and I’m like totally lost , would it be possible if you can make a video from basic connection and using effects, connecting FOH and Monitors and also what is the apps we download on the IPad I would really appreciate if you can have one of these videos 👍
You should try a quick search on youtube 100s of hours of free content availible. I watched about 2 hours of videos while waiting for my desk to arrive and knew it inside and out before I even touched it.
I have a M32R play list going over a lot of the basics. I use the regular M32 app from Midas, though a lot of people prefer the Mixing Station app. I agree, the control surface is a bit tricky. I use the iPad for most of the programming and use the physical surface to mix the show. Here is the playlist: ruclips.net/p/PLxszCPSjfl3vvWwz8zNUDmSsxR4dglRhW&si=ic8KSvFmPId2YBq_
I thought the pre/post on the insert was the dynamics not the fader.
Yeah, you’re probably right, that makes much more sense!!
Based on the description in the manual and the little signal flow diagram in the UI, it's pre/post both eq and dynamics.
Billy looks like he has some good weed lol
Why not using LR24?

amazing video
Over in Europe we also have Adam Hall (parent company of LD Systems) that also has a catalog full of case hardware and wood. I always have ny boxes build and aluminium cut by a case building company and finish them of myself. Which comes down to assembling, drilling and riveting and of course the most important part: Making sure everything fits perfectly. Saves me about 40% of total cost of a completed case.
It's funny. Not too long ago everybody wanted to go digital so they could stop hauling around their outboard gear (which sometimes was ridiculously large and complicated). And now we are back where we started: Big racks filled to the brim with outboard gear. Especially the younger generations are really into outboard gear. I know some oldtimers that hold on to their outboard gear for whatever reason that are now making a killing as prices for quality outboard gear are on the up & up. Same goes for stagesnakes up to 12 channels. After getting them for almost free, there has been a steady rise over the past year for these snakes in the second hand market.
I guess i Just don't understand why of company 1 can make it for x, why you'd have to be 2-3x company 1. You all use the same ingredients you said.
We use the same suppliers, not the same ingredients. As an example, Costco sells A5 Wagyu and regular ground beef. You can buy standard aluminum extrusions from Penn Elcom. LM designed and created our own cornerstock / tongue and groove shapes which required custom dies. Beyond ingredients, everyone will have different operating expenses. Someone building cases in their garage will have a lower monthly mortgage than say a 40k sq ft shop. Payroll is another factor in operation expenses: How much do the employees earn? Do you offer health insurance, retirement etc…?
@ fair enough bud. Thanks!
We've asked this specific case guy a lifetime's worth of questions.
Im all yours for another 12 lifetimes! 😻😻🥰🥰 (after 12…you are on your own 🤣🤣🤣)

It did for me. Are you having the same problem?
@@billylaguardia thank you! No, not yet, just wondering how reliable the new device is
@ it sounds amazing. The digital integration isn’t quite ready for prime time. If you run it analog with the emote plugin for recalls it really works well. I use it on every mix. Well worth the $.
Really cool machine. Great video!
Which stand can adjust the lowest? What's the measurement from top of desk to bottom of display screen. Thanks
How would you use a drive rack with the M32c.
L/R outputs of the M32C into the inputs of the DriveRack. The DR would handle your multiple sends like L/R, Sub, Front Fill etc..
You wouldn't have a bare isolated ground conductor. They have to be insulated and you still need regular ground to ground the strap on the outlet. They need two grounds and the entire service had to be setup to use a isolated ground system in the panel feeding a isolated ground receptacle.
Hey, I'm curious! What are your reasons for disliking flip cases? Im actually interested in one because I then wouldn't need another case or a table to set my mixer on.
This is an excellent question! I decided to make a video on it. Here ya go! ruclips.net/video/CUbT_gxE0Kg/видео.html
Are you going to show us how to physically connect outboard gear to the M32R, and then show us exactly how to program the M32R to use the outboard gear? Because I'm 4 minutes in and so far you're just selling stuff.
