True NASCAR fans know how great Carl Edwards was. He and Mark Martin are my two all time favorites. Damn shame neither of them ever won a championship.

Agree. Mark and Carl were both gentlemen and never were able to hoist the trophy. Nascar is on the decline. The races are boring. I rather go to WOO dirt races and see some tight racing in traffic.
That's me I basically QUIT watching the races all together ever since my man Mark Martin hung it up !!! Nascar for the last 10 years at least has gone to CRAPS with their rule changing this rule changing that and really the fans don't won't none of that shit or care about it for real !!! I might watch a little of the Daytona 500 , Coca Cola 600 and not even the whole race to the finish with all that different stages and interruptions and it has never been the same since the days of Petty, Pearson, Yarborough, Earnhardt, Martin, Gordan, and the older drivers you get my picture but people will still watch it to me since Winston left the scene it was NEVER the SAME !!!!
In my humble opinion, NASCAR has done a great deal of damage to themselves with shenanigans just like this, and they are still doing it today in other forms of "rule changes". Get rid of the stages, stop extending yellows just so somebody can remain on the lead lap, and get rid of the "cookie cutter" cars that inhibit the innovations from the garage. The sport progressed through the years from the innovations of the teams and not the sanctioning body. Today's NASCAR is almost unwatchable!!!
...but, on my Sunday, and sometime Saturday nights, I like watching the NASCAR racing; it's colorful, and loud during the 'Crank it Up' segments, and I get to put on my favorite T-shirt and support my favorite driver/team, with the bright yellow car that has happy M&M's all over it, and his brother, too¡☆! 😃

I used to drive my late model that I made up at Thompson International Speedway and was a total diehard NASCAR fan but throughout the years with their politics and stupidity and other shenanigans and not holding Goodyear to the fire for the Indy race that they brought those "rubber bands" that the drivers had to come in every 12 to 14 laps because Goodyear brought their usual junk/ worse than their usual junk ties to a very prestigious and special event! That's when I stop watching and being part of NASCAR altogether! They can kiss my ass, I don't watch, I don't follow and I don't read any of their stuff! They have a track at Waterford Connecticut that they have no business being part of because it's nothing but demolition derby… That ain't racing but it is NASCAR so that means it is a "shit show!" No thank you!

Almost? It is unwatchable today. It started with the lucky dog, giving the first car a lap down, his lap back. They also took a valid points system that worked great for years, and made it like regular season and playoffs for the championship. Then they took a stage theme from a non points event "The Winston", and put it in EVERY race. Final nail in the coffin was the fact that they got politically correct. It's officially ruined, you can't put Humpty Dumpty back together again.
Carl flew into our facility one night. It was raining like crazy. He asked if he could nose the aircraft into the hangar because his family was in the aircraft. We pulled the aircraft into the hangar with everyone inside and let them all out. There were no passenger seats in the aircraft. Everyone was all in the floor in sleeping bags. We got the airplane unloaded and then put it back outside.
Super nice guy. Very polite and appreciative for our efforts to not put his family out in the rain.
Plain and simple for me, I was/am a Carl Edwards fan so when he quit, it broke my heart and I quit with him. I haven’t been to or watched another nascar race since.
Carl is a champion in my eyes and one hell of a role model.

NASCAR has pandered to the younger set. They have totally abandoned the core fan who supported them for years. These rule changes are a total joke. I wouldn't pay a red cent to attend a race.
Carl was an old boy who played the game with honesty and grit, Nascar clowns took that away with short sighted rulings. A tough and classy guy to the end Carl calls it a day and walks away head held high. Cheers to you Mr. Edwards.
Opinion: I feel that sometimes those smaller/weaker drivers or teams get overlooked at when the huge teams always get the fame & the glory. It’s kinda like what is happening with Kyle Busch. Imagine if he left JGR and got downgraded to a smaller 1 car team only to help build that team up. Would anyone do that if you were a driver? Say if you had plenty of $$ and decided to go to the underdog team in order for that team to become bigger, badder and have a level playing field with the other race teams.
@@vickynuno-ramsouer9804 You do have a point here I feel, while hes not going to a smaller underbudget team, he is going to a team that has not had much success here lately, I think he could definitely turn things around for Richard Childress.
@@ONTHEEDGEFRED we’re talking about Carl Edwards here, Not KFB. He’s going to RCR and I think that’s going to definitely level out the playing field a lot. For the past few years, it’s been powerhouse war of the roses with Hendrick vs JGR. SHR vs Penske, and then all the smaller newer teams vs. the rest of the field in order to either get noticed or for one of the bigger teams to come in and help them out with a charter. It’s a very competitive game out there: sponsors, how the driver is as a whole, fan engagement, and so much more. As drivers go along they want more, but unfortunately that’s not always the case. Sometimes you have to take away from one in order to build growth. I also felt that with Carl, Dani, Danica and now with KFB. I’m sure there’s more that I’m missing, but if anyone can remember lmk.

Jack Roush has over 30 championships from various forms of racing. NASCAR never gave him a fair shot. If we would have seen Fair racing Mark Martin, Carl Edwards would have won multiple championships, like those two Hendrick prima donnas. Mark Martin and Carl Edwards were better.
There's a handful of drivers that give us the reasons to watch the sport, Carl is one of those drivers. I hope he's living a great life miss him.

Carl Edwards is such a class act. I cried as he gave his retirement announcement. His positive and respectful attitude, along with his wonderful smile always made my heart happy. He's missed every race day. I hope he reads these comments and he knows how many people love and miss him. He's truly a Champion in life!
Carl was always down to earth polite. One thing he always did, and I think it was really class was when he would be interviewed whether he won or ended up wrecked and out of the race. He always took his son glasses off.

I was working for Nascar as an inspector in the truck series when Carl Edwards won his first truck race in a Ford driving for Jack Roush. Carl was a great driver and had a great personality. I just knew he was going to do good racing in Nascar. I also was in Homestead the day Kenny Wallace is talking about. It disgusted me what Nascar did to tighten up the field to supposedly make the final laps to a championship exciting. Well, that day they messed up badly. Spoke with Carl after the race and he was broken hearted. I've never seen him in this state, very sad and not angry but pissed off in a sense he was robbed. I don't blame him, he was a good clean racer with a simple attitude. I miss him in the Cup series and I'm glad he got out before it got worse in Nascar. God Bless him and his family.

@tnwhiskey68 I never saw that. He was a clean racer with patients getting to the front. Can't remember what year it was but he got screwed by Tony Stewart out of a championship in Homestead Florida. The dirty driver back then was Kurt Bush.
@@raykasza6855Ask Keselowski how clean Carl was. I think his charm, smile and personality put a gloss over some of the stuff he did on the track. I don’t think he was a dirty racer like old school Kurt Busch, but he wasn’t “clean” either. Not that I have a problem with that…still liked the guy.
Carl would be a two time cup champ ('08, '11) under the traditional format. In addition to preserve his health and build more presence with his family, I think he had enough of the b.s. (nascar's constant changing points system screwed him out of two championships. When he finally is going to get one on his third try, he felt nascar took it away from him.)

I tell you something, if the current format of the playoffs had been implemented since 2004 instead of Chase, Carl could have had the opportunity to be champion even once, Jimmie Johnson did not reach 7 titles maybe a maximum of 3.

@@kristenangier9673 I can't say much about Gordon because I didn't live that time but that he was a good driver he was, only that he didn't know how to adapt well to the Chase format since you can be consistent in the first 26 races of the year but if in the last 10 you collapse or make a mistake, you are lost. For example: Kyle Busch in 2008.
Win or lose, you have always been one of the happiest drivers on the track. God bless you, we need more people like that in this world

I couldn't agree more Kenny, I became an Edwards fan in 2009 when he got put into the fence at Talladega and climbed from his car and ran to the finish line, I love his demeanor his driving style his personality it was all just awesome to me and I was absolutely crushed after the wreck that caused him the championship in 2016 probably the most devastating event for me as a fan to this day and in my heart I understood why he retired but just didn't want to believe it, I do and will continue to miss seeing Carl on track but I am glad he is happily retired and living his best life!
Carl was a great driver and a true spokesman for the sport. Ever since his truck days he fired up the sport. Nascar needs more like him. Hope he's living a great life. Kenny you have always been a personality we need more of. Keep it up brother.

I've always suspected that Carl was absolutely heartbroken after losing those 2 Championships that should have been his. The wind was just sucked out of his sails. I don't blame him. The meddling of NASCAR, the points system and playoffs structure has huge potential to screw over the best-performing drivers each year. Look at Kevin Harvick - he had 9 wins, 20 top 5s and 27 top 10s in 2020, and in 2018 he had 8 wins, 23 top 5s and 29 top 10s but in both of those years he finished out of the final 4. I'm not a fan of the playoff structure at all and never will be.
Well everybody can blame Matt Kenseth for the playoff system. What ever year he won his championship he point raced, he never won a race that year and they changed to the playoff system the next year. Never thought he was any good before or after that.
@@mikebussart2575 in 2003 Kenseth won one race at Las Vegas if I remember correctly early in the year and was the most consistent driver all year. And that became a problem for NASCAR for some reasons.
@@andrewbird5598 I can tell you why: because it SUCKED. It was boring as sin. Matt Kenseth had the championship locked up like a month early and we knew no one was catching him in like July. And the thing is, this wasn’t just a one time thing. MOST years were like that. The fans overwhelmingly said they wanted wins to matter more. Everyone looks back now and says they hate the Chase, but let me tell you, it’s far better than what we had the vast majority of years.

@@mikebussart2575 I would also argue that Jimmie Johnson is the reason for the current playoff system and basically getting rid of the points system pretty much altogether. I remember Jimmie would have the title wrapped up or close to wrapped up before the final race which would make that race boring or not relevant to the championship
Carl was my favorite driver 100%. Not because he was a great driver but because he was even a better person and roll model for any young fan. The day he retired is the day I said enough of NASCAR! I very seldom watch any more.
Carl was my driver, it’s a shame what they did to him so they could get their phony drama. I have nothing but respect for Carl after he decided to retire after that. The “playoffs” are a complete joke.

Carl was an excellent driver, I agree with most of what Kenny says except that he left with a broken heart. I think he left pissed with two middle fingers pointed at NASCAR. That's why he pretty much disappeared and wants nothing to do with the sport. They did him dirty.
NASCAR is chickenshit, point blank. Look what they did to Winston after 33yrs and 38Billion dollars, all the Winston cup wins, turned into sprint cup wins, bullshit in my opinion. I haven't watched a single race since Matt Kenseth was the last Winston Cup Champion.

As a Carl Edwards fan I had the opportunity to finally meet him in Charlotte in 2015 it was my buddies first race Carl is a very humble guy and that's what made the heartbreak a whole lot worse a year later that man stood and talked with us for 15 min after the race just shooting the bull and signed our Hot Passes and actually handed me the sunglasses off his face it was an unbelievable experience
NASCAR = Boss Hogg. Everytime I heard "he was called to the Nascar hauler"... I would think "Boss Hogg has summoned the Duke Boys" .. Completely unprofessional. Circus stuff. Nascar needs a rulebook and on field officials to administer that rulebook with standardized penalties just like every other sport. Goodell doesn't change on field calls in the NFL .. hello NASCAR.. End your PT Barnum administration.

I think you hit the nail on the head so to speak Kenny. I've always wondered where Carl Edwards went or what happened to him later on. Nascar does have that tendency to play favorites or to make it where certain people get the glory, even if it means wrecking someone else's career. The amount of people in the stands at each track speaks for itself these days.
Thank you for posting this. Carl Edwards was my favorite driver, a humble human being and a genuine nice person. My heart broke that day they threw the phantom. I still watch the sport because I grew up in upstate SC and it's in my blood. And it's one of the few good memories of my childhood with my father. I don't love nascar as much as I did before this happened and I haven't found or seen another driver with the passion and integrity that Carl had. This was wrong, he is missed and i hope he reads this and holds his head high knowing he's a champion in my heart. I'll never forget after the championship was taken from him he ran across pit road, to Loganos pit box, shook their hands and then faded Into obscurity. Mic drop moment and class act. Sadly, in this world we live in nice guys typically get stepped on. You shouldn't have to be vindictive and nasty human to be a winner. Thank you Carl. For what you did for the sport and humanity!
Agree ,Carl is also my favorite driver, the reason i always planned my Sunday afternoons during race season. He used to run on the dirt track across the way from my house in his early career. There is one Driver of late who has piqued my attention Ross Chastain, love his willingness to throw it all out there and but heads for the win.
I can't blame Carl for leaving, he seemed like a purist type of racer and Nascar kept getting further and further away from that... Not to mention he had a history of getting fucked over by Nascar.

Nicest guy we ever met in the garage area; he genuinely interacted with his fans and seemed to always make himself available
It wasn't just that he quit all of a sudden that made it mysterious, but that he completely disappeared from the scene. Edwards always came across as a smart, sharp, very well spoken guy. It looked like he had it set up even for his post-racing career. He was great on TV, you figured he'd go into the booth, or own a team, that even after he was no longer driving he'd be a very visible guy in the sport. So when he completely left it and was no longer around in any way, you knew there was something more to it that just a driver deciding he had made enough money.
I forgot he was in the Fox broadcast booth for the Saturday race
He actually stayed around as a coach for Suarez
I honest think he quit because Nascar screwed him out of the championship in favor of Jimmy Johnson. They did this twice to him
I never understood when drivers "retired" to spend more time with their family but still show up for the races almost every weekend. If they have kids that are school age, they are still spending half the time they could be spending with their kids at the race track on Sundays.
@@oaker55 they can still go to races, but when they give up racing, they give up all the appearances. All the practice laughs at different tracks all the traveling, big deal, if they travel a day to go to a race one day.

I think edwards is just at that fuck this point with racing in general. I believe it bothers him the way Nascar did him throughout the years. And he just doesn’t want to be apart of it anymore..

Since the minute he made him announcement, I've always had this mindset. Carl was well off, and just drove because he was good at it and loved doing it. When NASCAR pulled their stunts, and it ultimately cost Carl the championship at the last minute, he took a hard look and decided that he had no reason to put himself through that again if NASCAR could just pull it out from under him again. He was comfortable with himself and his career to be satisfied with what he had done and didn't need to prove himself to anybody
its crazy how carl got his break. doubt that will ever happen again in racing. he was posting ads as a driver to look for work.
And for that he gain a fan at the wrong time. I sure do miss him.

Carl was the best person/driver/personality at the track. Super fan oriented! He was the favorite of most my nascar friends! Yes, he was very frugal! He was the best thing that ever happened to NASCAR. I still have his 99 flag up at my house!!!
NASCAR has never been the same, and I have not been back to the track since! I expected I would travel to many tracks to watch him now that I am retired! I wish HD would return, then I would too!

The day Carl retired from NASCAR was a very sad day for me. That same day my best friend since childhood passed away. Carl's doppelganger was my best friend. Even today, I still miss them both. 😌
Cousin Carl was a great driver, always positive and pleasant! His signature win routine was legendary, the back flip! A sad day when he left the sport.

Carl was the last actual driver I was exclusively rooting for. I was hoping he would pop up in some other form racing like road racing and Id watch him race there. I quit NASCAR finally a couple years ago like so many did with their ridiculous stunts they still pull, but I like things like this channel with Kenny because they were what made the racing fun to watch at the time!
We were at the Richmond race when Carl “bumped” Kyle Busch on the last lap to win the race. Heard Joe Gibbs on a post race interview and he was not happy with the outcome. Wish I could remember the exact quote. It was like “don’t do that to a team mate.” It was more or less “you don’t do that to the champion.” All of us could tell Mr. Gibbs was not pleased. I think Kyle Busch was Gibb’s “golden child” and Carl got the message. Then losing the Championship race, it the push that Carl needed to decide to retire. He was and is a “class act.”
Look at the Kyle Busch mess now all the temper tantrum’s have finally caught up to him yes he’s a great driver but acts like a spoiled brat
I still miss the class Carl Edwards brought to NASCAR. Great driver. Raced Stewart cleanly for the championship and accepted defeat as a gentleman..at least in public. And I loved his signature flip from the car. Hoping he's happy.

Carl Edwards was the one guy, that with all that he accomplished, I always thought that he would win a Cup Series Championship. And I feel that NASCAR needs to seriously find a point system that is consistent, and it drove plenty of fans away (understandably so). I do remember watching that race a little bit, and when I found out that Carl was screwed over for a championship, I wanted to flip out..put... and both times 08, and 11, he definitely would have won a championship. And I'm sure that over the years that NASCAR, has had numerous amounts of meetings, where the drivers say, "We need to stop playing boomerang with the points system, every so often".. And I agree with you on the fact that NASCAR had already screwed him over, not once, not twice, but THREE times, Carl was like, "I'm done with you guys, cause I got 50 million dollars, that I can live off of"... and Carl most likely had a broken heart for sure...
F1 style points system, only the top 25 or so get points, it forces people to actually try and field teams, and not just shitty start and parks.

I watched Carl race and always enjoyed his sportsmanship and his driving and mechanical abilities as a stock car driver. He has more heart than handfuls of others. It was a joy to watch him flip out. And comment.
100% agree. As a Carl Edwards fan, I have watched the videos of what happened at the end of that race and his retirement press conference over and over. Watching him walk from the car that night and apologize to the 22 crew, it was almost like you can look at his face and just see at that moment he was over it. I myself have a tendency to smile when I get to the point in life where I'm over a situation and it's just kind of my signal, that I'm done. I think as the next month or so went on, his feelings never changed. I have been at the same job for 15 years and the people I work with ask me why I'm always so happy and I tell them because I really enjoy what I do but I usually follow that up very quickly with if that ever changes and I'm unhappy for a period of 6 months or so, I wouldn't be a benefit to my employer or be doing myself any favors if I stuck around doing something I didn't enjoy anymore. Maybe racing had become more of a job to Carl even before the championship race and that's all it took for him to need a change. We will probably never know but I for one respect the man. You never hear anything about him and usually those are the people that are happiest in life because they don't seek attention. Maybe these days, he does his backflips in private off his tractor after a hard day's work that brings him joy in life. :-)

I think Carl believes in himself and knows he can win and achieve his goals no matter what it may be and doesn’t care what others think. He lives to satisfy himself and his family and not others. This is what I think of Carl. He doesn’t need anything else, the most important need is family.

My heart broke when Carl called it quits, I haven't been able to get fully behind another driver since. He was such a class act, a person who was grounded, thoughtful and generous. He brought a lot of respect to the sport and he was robbed of the cup. The year he battled with Tony he was so consistent but didnt have a win. It wasn't exciting so he got roasted and the talk was someone shouldn't get the cup without having a single win. A year or two later the talk, you have to be consistent. It is very unfortunate that he totally stepped away from the sport but it is understandable, and I still wear my #99 shirt. Hope you are doing well Carl 👍👍🏁🏁🏁

I still miss Carl in NASCAR to this day. I agree with you Kenny on that they absolutely robbed Carl of HIS championship in 2016 cause of that BS caution they threw that night and I do believe that's why he left too cause he was sick of NASCAR pulling such moves just to get their drama.
That wasn't the first time NASCAR has upset me with "fake" cautions though. They screwed over my favorite driver, Martin Truex Jr., of being at least a 2X champion this same way. Last year at Phoenix, Truex had the best car of the Championship 4 and got the lead late before running away to the 2021 title. Then NASCAR threw the "caution" with less than 30 laps left for a car that I think was slow cause it's engine blew up, but it was completely safe and off the track, going to pit road. But they still pulled that same type of BS caution and it screwed MTJ from the championship he should have had last year. The JGR 19 car has been done bad so many times...
I genuinely hate when officials interfere with the outcome of an event.. Let the drivers dictate who wins. If a crew chief puts together a great race and the driver literally drives a solid race they should win.. It's called competition. I haven't watched Nascar much since Carl got robbed and Im sure Im not alone

I’ve lost a lot of respect and trust in NASCAR for this exact point you’re making. I was a huge Dale Jarrett fan and remember the year he lost the Championship to Jeff Gordon by 12 points. I believe it was 1998, the year before he won his championship. NASCAR black flagged DJ at Watkins Glen because they thought he was leaking oil or transmission fluid because he had a few wisps of smoke out of the car, which was probably just a tire rub or something but they found nothing wrong in the pits, essentially black flagging him for nothing. The points he lost that day from the black flag cost him the championship and I’m still sore over it.
Probably was 1997, Gordon won the title by 14 pts that year and I think it was DJ that was 2nd. Gordon destroyed everyone in 1998.
Definitely 97 you’re talking about that was before my time but my dad was a T Labonte fan and He remembered when jarret got screwed on that call he was pissed. Despite liking labonte he hated mostly all of hendrick lol
That may have also been the same year where DJ had the best car by far at the Brickyard and ran out of fuel going for the bonus money NASCAR gave out for leading at the half way point. He went down like 3 laps and could never recover, so the points lost there would have put him over the top for the championship, if that was indeed the same year. I remember how pissed he was and he had some pretty pointed remarks about him being the driver and didn’t make the calls on when to pit. Hindsight is always 20/20…🤷🏻

Ya that's cuz I swear Hendrick has his hand in nascar. Jimmie Johnson got away with cheating for years. Watch a race on TV and all you hear is Hendrick this and Hendrick that. They had to get Johnson his seventh championship somehow
Kenny, that photo right behind you I believe of Earl Baltes and the hat of Eldora Speedway...that is a real treasure. I don't know how well you knew Earl, but years ago when he owned the track if you asked Earl about how the races were going he would reply "I'd a broke even if I sold another hot dog". He was a great guy and even better promoter of the sport of racing and loved a great race. I grew up not too far from the Speedway and you made me smile when I saw the photo - the only thing missing is that old cap with the bill flipped up. He was one of the best.
Yo Kenny, Thanks for the shout out for Davey! He is still one of my heros. I remember weeping with the news of the crash. NASCAR has always lived thru many tragedies as that was part of the true American spirit. I've paid homage at the Hall of Fame as well as cherish Talladega memories. Karl was my favorite of the young guns after the valiant efforts of Ernie Irvin's comeback.
I’ve always said I believed that when Edwards climbed up on Logano’s pit box and shook their hands and wished them luck that he had already made his decision.
Yes the sabotage of the Carl Edwards Championship was the final straw for me too. When Carl retired from NASCAR, I retired too!! I tried to keep watching. Then all the different rule changes and different formats all the bs. NASCAR lost fans from all the stupidity. Pretty much done with all Pro sports due to all the bad calls “on purpose” to cost teams wins and championships. Sickening!!!
I totally agree with you. Carl's lost of the championship was the last straw for me. I quit watching because I was so tired of the BS. I use to be a diehard fan, you couldn't pull me away from the tv when a race was on.
He was my favorite driver of all time and I haven't watched an entire race since he left.

Herm, Carl was, is, and always will be my favorite NASCAR star. Being; that I am a retired Photojournalist, I believe I can finally state that Carl left quickly, and I believe he was compensated handsomely for his opening the seat at the time he did. In the end NASCAR costs themselves integrity, but as a Sole State Holder in a National Sport, it may be time for owners to step up, and make it look more like the NFL, NBA, and MLB in that each owner has a stake in the sport and they put together a commission to oversee the entirety of the sport. Each team should be able to field a set race teams and no one is guaranteed a starting spot. NASCAR has done many things correctly, but then the change in direction occurred when other family members took over the sport. NASCAR could afford to learn from some of the Dirt Track Techniques in qualifying, open up tire competition, and allow small teams equal footing on spending. Drivers like Carl Edwards always brought out the best in NASCAR it is sad that NASCAR left Carl Edwards down. Carl was quiet until he could no longer be quiet, and I am surprised that he has been so quiet for so long. No matter what he’s doing on the farm, I hope he knows he is missed at NASCAR for sure.

You and me both! Why do we never see or hear anything from him? I loved it when he came back home and would do meet and greets at Machens. I stopped watching Nascar after he left. Just hasn't been the same.
Not only at Machens, but also being on Clear 99 on Monday mornings. Carl was not my favorite (Dale Jr), but I loved to listen to his wit on the radio.

Carl was perhaps the classiest driver ever to grace NASCAR. He was a fan favorite because he would interact with the fans and always give the media his attention. I think Carl would have been a big success at anything he put his mind to.
It's a shame that NASCAR would go all NBA and let the officiating determine the outcome of races and championships.

I liked how he put the Pensky Pukes in their places and wrecked Keslaswski when he refused to race him cleanly! He should have kicked Joey's ass that last championship race when he wrecked Carl again and took him out of the championship!
As a northerner myself I couldn’t agree more. I watched Daytona this year and haven’t watched a race since. Struggled hard to remain a fan for the last couple years but the interest is just completely again. I am slowly and painfully coming to terms with fully accepting that the sport that NASCAR once was simply does not exist anymore and never will again. As the Pettys have said, it used to be a race but now it is a show.
My dad loved Edwards. I almost had a chance to meet him when I worked for Office Depot. My biggest regret that I didn’t take the chance to fly to meet him. I miss that guy and his honesty.
I was a HUGE Cousin Carl fan. It was very difficult to see him vanish without a trace.
I remember being at Dover for the spring race in 2006 and Mark Martin as pulling away midrace and the caution came out. I had his channel and my scanner and he said "They did that for TV. I hate that." It was happening for a long time. If it didn't cost Carl the title, it would still be happening.
Oh they still throw yellows to better the show.

I got Carl Edwards autograph on my pit pass at Michigan hanging up in my garage. He was a pure gentleman and racer that everyone could admire. May not have won that Championship but he was still a Champ 😂👊

I got pit passes to the race in New Hampshire and got to meet Carl Edwards. He was the nicest guy around even let my 2 year old sit in his car. Great guy
Carl is a good guy. He often at the end of a race would thank Mike Mittler for giving him a start in the truck series.
When a top driver retires unexpectedly there is always a real good reason.
I was a huge fan Of Nascar in the 90's and early 2000"s. Went to Bristol fall race and Michigan spring race every year as we had season tickets. I rarely watch anymore if at all. I couldn't even tell you the format. Always was a fan of yours Herman. peace brother.

100% agree and that's the same thought process I had when Carl announced his retirement. Why should he pour out his blood sweat and tears week in and week out when NA$CAR was manipulating the system.

I remember when the only Nascar racing you could watch on TV was on ABC's Wide World of Sports. And it was only the start a little of the middle and a few laps at the end. In between bowling, or archery or what ever. I remember the 1979 Daytona 500, the first flag to flag race on TV. I got to watch all the Wallace boys race in Winston Cup. I watched hundreds of races over the year, but I completly lost intrest by the end of the 2002 season. The up coming points changes, Car of Tommorrow didn't intrest me. Dale was gone, Davey, Allen, Neal. I couldn't imagine watching today.

Thanks for this...I always thought there was something more to his leaving so soon. I was always a Hendrick guy but I loved Carl because he was a straight up good guy who was good for the sport. This makes all the sense to me.
It was totally surprising to me when Carl Edward's left Nascar. He had won over many hearts with his backward flips and his great big smile. The year after he left seemed sad. I often commented and still do...I sure do miss Carl Edward's. Racing has changed in many ways. I've been a fan for a very very long time...and miss the old style of racing. I would love to see the Chamionship go to the end, with every racer having a chance to win. Nonetheless we miss you Carl...Our Hearts Were Broken Also.
Great run down, reminds of George Stright in The movie Pure Country, Carl was tired of being the Dancing Chicken and left on his terms. I salute him for making his decision.
Thanks Kenny for saying what needed to be said. That caution was so bogus, it still makes me angry to this day! What you failed to mention tho, was how Logano purposefully " plowed" Carl into the wall!!! He could have lifted, but Logano is still notorious for that type of unsportsmanlike driving. Look what he did to Kenseth!!! But that aside, I could tell that something serious was coming down after that wreck!! Watching Carl's face as he walked to the Medical Center said it all. His jaws were clenched and SET!!! He was furious and trying to keep control of himself. His eyes were burning with rage!! I don't blame him a bit!! He had every right to be furious. What a terrible feeling to know you've been played by a crooked system that you have no control over!! Why go on and let them do it again??!! Not Carl Edwards!! His level of integrity couldn't allow him to go on. I commend him for it, yet I'm still so sorry His career had to end on this note. I hope one day he will write a book about his career in Nascar! Then the truth will come out.

I have always wondered the most about Carl's retirement from NASCAR and his virtual disappearance from any involvement in the sport. Carl could have had a promising career in the booth following his exit from driving. I really wish he would lay it all out himself and not pull any punches, but I'm sure he has his own reasons for not doing so and he's certainly entitled to them. He doesn't owe the world an explanation but as a race fan that always liked Carl I would still love to know for sure. I was always suspicious of the timing of the big name retirements that all seemed to start with Carl's exit. The sport was really hurting with very poor attendance, we all saw the near empty tracks on TV. New drivers are certainly much cheaper than Jeff Gordon or Tony Stewart so it appeared like expensive former champions and even veterans were being squeezed out to save money.
Millions in the bank? I would say he had a successful “career.”
If Carl crashed out because of a fake caution, wouldn't you think that he quit because he felt that NASCAR had no regard for his safety. He has a family and wished to stay alive. Why compete in a dangerous race when people in suits are screwing with your very life? He has more then enough to retire and I hope he has a great life ahead.
After the loss of Dale Sr. I'd say Carl Edwards retirement is the second most shocking NASCAR event. I still have a hard time grasping it.
Edit: On second thought, maybe it wasn't the second most shocking moment. Davey Allison passing, Alan Kulwicki passing, Neil Bonnett, several others. Those are definitely more shocking moments.
And to make it worse Alan was the defending 1x champ and Davey was challenging him again, And then they both died in the SAME race season.
Kenny, I met you once at Martinsville, 1990 Busch series finale . You ran a great race that day, you won it, and Chuck Bown clinched the series championship. I was working on the 62 crew ( John Paul Linville) his last top ten finish in that series. Anyway, I just wanted to tell you what a class act you are, I think you were underrated as a driver, and I really enjoy your commentary. GOD bless you, please keep it up sir .

Right On, Herm! You hit the nail on the head! Perfect Call! They have Not Caught the Phantom Caution! HE still appears regularly. If the race is boring, or if they see that they are behind schedule for heavy adds, or if one of the "Bad Boys" is about to win a race or a championship, here comes the "Phantom". He shows up at nearly every NASCAR race to this day regardless of which division is racing. He's just essential for good business.
I feel like a lot of us would like to see Carl come back, sure. But realistically we all just wish Carl the best and most happy life possible. We just want to know he's doing well.
God listening to this makes me think about how much NASCAR needs Kenny Wallace on a “Trackside” show, Friday night after the truck race, Sunday morning before cup. He is so interesting. Someone please make this happen again
Carl Edwards was a true wheel man,..A hot-shoe...He had Kyle Bush talent....I watched him beat Jimmie Johnson in his Scott's Ford at Atlanta and Carl drove 2 of the last 3 laps completely sideways ALL THE WAY AROUND the race track and passed Johnson on the last lap completely sideways as he made the pass.
I remember that race too.was very excited to see carl win that one .lots of skill and determination.
That was 2005 season when he won at Atlanta. It was great
I was and still am a huge Cousim Carl fan, starting from his impressive Cup debut in 04. I wont be as quick to get on the bandwagon that this is fact but I also wont shoot down the possibility that its plausible (Ex of manipulation, Dale Jr Dega no penalty, Regan Smith 08 Dega penalty, Earnhardt / Bodine caution incident,can go on...). All I know is I loved Carl and a fan and still haven't recovered or found another (Chastain is growing on me since driving the #42 Xfinity). Maybe one more backflip even in SRX is in order soon....still not giving up hope.
Carl was a great driver with maybe the greatest line ever in nascar. He passed Johnson by driving it in hard on last corner and said "in the video game you can hold it wide open and just scrape wall a little coming out but it slowed me down more than it does in video game!"

Carl Edwards was the reason that I watched NASCAR. That race was the last NASCAR race that I watched!.
We threw out MWR and Ty Norris for “manipulating a race” yet Nascar did just that forever and it was totally okay. It’s a great example of why they have done a poor job being transparent.
