In incline walking I finally found a cardio exercise that I can do and enjoy. My back, hip and knee problems prevented me from doing prettymuch anything else. But incline walking works, it's fun and, god do I feel a burn in my glutes and calves.
Thank you for making this! It really helps! I’m a PW currently because I’m not sure I could jog for more than 1-2 minutes. I can definitely tell I’ve become so much stronger in my legs etc.
Ever since I started using the treadmill I have at home I couldn't jog at all lol. I've always done powerwalking because I still get my muscles to work very well with less exhaustion. It's been really good for someone like me who has back problems and can't do heavy exercise. Thanks for the video!
I'm 248lbs and if I run at 8 mph on 2% incline for 2 miles straight, I burn 425 calories. But if I walk on 10% incline for 2 miles at 3mph I burn 604. It's the REAL DEAL......I'm so mad I ever used my treadmill to run.
I started about 1 year ago on this training and was overweight. Now I have lost over 10 kg, but It was difficult at start. I can do now at an incline setting @ 15 an a speed 7.3-7.5, I burn over 850 calories in 1 hour. (7 km)...btw I am 59. I was a size 85cm waist, now 79cm. Believe me it works!
I often do 3.5 mph at 15 incline for an hour and burn a little over a 1,000 cals… are you saying you do max incline of 15% at 7 plus mph for an hour straight? And you’re almost 60? I’m gonna need to see this bc it sounds all but impossible. Unless it’s a metric difference and I’m just not reading it right lol
I'm just recovering from a knee injury, but I am not quite able to run without feeling a "slight" impact pain. So, I tried "just walking" on a treadmill, which I would normally think is "too easy". Set max incline 15% and 3.0 mph for 60 minutes. I surprised myself to be able to hit an HR reading hit 181 bpm at finish. A big thing I notice running with: a.) Hands swinging freely: HR=176 bpm b.) Hands on hips or on head(immobile): HR=181 bpm c.) Hands on the bar or top of the treadmill panel, leaning back and swaying my hips: HR can drop 30-40 bpm. Those stats were 2nd day of doing this treadmill workout, previously day I did 13% for 3.0 mph and 60 minutes. From the previous day I felt absolutely no impact pain in my knee joints. Also, normally when I run it would take quite a bit of speed 6.8-7.6 mph to bring up effort in 170+ hr area. That's about my 2 mi all out or 5k pace endurance limit that I cannot sustain for longer than 25 minutes. So, to be able to hold that HR intensity level with just a walking motion is amazing. I'm pretty sure if I can overcome the boredom and use a water bottle, treadmill durations of 1.5 to 2.0 hrs might be possible.
I love brisk walking on treadmill I use to weight 75+with the help of just brisk walking everday from past few months without any diet now i weight 56.5 , it was really hard for me when I first started ..from walking with speed of 3 with no incline but now I can easily walk up to speed of 7.5 with 7+_incline so keep trying trust me if I can lose weight anyone am an do that too 😊
I do 5.0 at a 15% for 30 minutes, No wonder why I get tired after I finish, I rather walk in inclines than jog/run specially if you are overweight like me.
Thank you so much for providing this insightful video; I'm going to definitely give this a shot since I do climb on roofs for work and this will help me with getting used to pitched inclines!
Thing to mention go at the speed you can power walk at without holding on for support I see so many people go faster but have to hold on for life. I can respectfully do 3.4 mph without holding on then I do jogging intervals at 5.2. Jogging seems to be tough the longest I can jog for is 2.5 minutes at 5.2 15 incline
This is so true. Not only do you burn far fewer calories and less fat by holding onto the rails of the treadmill, but you also put yourself at increased risk of injury due to incorrect posture while holding on. If you absolutely cannot do it without holding on, then you are going too fast and need to decrease your speed a bit.
How much cardio should I do? I do 55 minutes of walking to the gym. Work out. 5 to 6 minutes of jogging above 7 incline. 15 for 3 minutes rest below. Walk back home. Than back to the gym working out 3 to 5 minutes on the stair/ steps and walk back home. 3 times a week. Sometimes I work out at home in between 2times a week. I’m 44 5 feet 7 158 pounds
I normally do 5-10 mins at 19% on speed 4.5 then drop to 15% at 5 for as long as I can, usually 10 mins then drop to 10% at 5.5 and burns easily 500 calls in 30 mins
I've been considering making one of my days a "walk hard" day. This is motivational to that goal. I'm running at 7.8/8.8/9.9 at the moment - with 30s AO's at 10 or 11. So I was thinking that I need to add inclines into my life. What is a good general walking pace for someone that is used to running?
That is an AWESOME idea. You're a fast runner! For someone with that aerobic capacity, I would try your walk speeds at 4.0 MPH and listen for the suggested inclines during the OTF workouts and see how it feels. In the end, you just want those walks to feel as fairly comparable (heart and lunge wise) to your runs!
I stopped doing any cardio because I was always super out of breath from running, so I just recently started walking on an incline and my heart rate gets to a similar level.
I do 7km/h at 14% incline for 30 mins when I cant do my usual cardio. I swim 5 days a week and gym 2 twice a week. I must say i perspire like crazy as if i just completed a long run and it feels good
I've been trying to combine running and power-walking I change the style every 5-10 minutes, and I do the whole thing for about 30-45 minutes. What do you think about that?
The gym that I've been working out at is off for a week and I want to complete exercising I'm a power walker could u please explain it to me how can I do the blocks? For base , push and all out ? 🙏🏻
Not bad at all! The most important thing to be aware of: 'are you giving your absolute best?' IF you can confidently say after each workout that there is NO WAY you could have tried harder, then there will never be a problem with always power-walking!
#Awesome!! Personally, I wouldn't go over 3.5 speed at max here on an "All Out." I believe the workout is better and designed for "interval training," so, I always decrease by 4-5 levels when the joggers/runners are told to decrease... However, I find the more I workout, I do tend to stay in the green zone.. but, if you track my green zone calories against the Orange zone calorie peeps, I usually burn as much or more....The increase and decrease of the heart rate is what leads to endurance without becoming fatigued.. (Only my opinion)..
Over time I've gotten faster on the #15 incline. 3.5 used to be my All-Out too. Now, my active recovery is 3.8. My current push is 4.6 speed. My All-Out is 5.2. I had to gradually work up to it. After a while the body gets used things. Had to keep my heart in the right zone. I like to recover by "kissing the green glass" or just touch the upper limit of the green zone for a couple seconds. Then work back to the Orange/Red in push pace. Red in an all out. Some people need more recovery time. Just listen to what your body is telling you.
Doesn’t lower intensity exercise also but a higher percentage of fat as apposed to higher intensity that uses more carbs for the fuel You just have to do it longer
My impression was always that the "fat burning zone" is just fitness companies telling the general public what they want to hear. Yes, it does technically burn more fat proportionally, but overall calorie expenditure is a more important number to go by. There are also other factors affecting that ratio such as carb intake for the day, and higher intensity exercise tends to have a lasting effect that burns extra calories for even hours after a workout. I'm sorry for the long response, but it's an interesting topic to talk about. Hey Austin, how about a future video on high-intensity vs low-intensity exercise? I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.
I’ve been having hip issues when I power walk/incline, should I switch to jogging instead (aren’t different muscles activated?or will jogging make it worse?) I’m currently working with the strider. Any suggestions?
Hip pain is from hanging on the handles. Try walking without holding the treadmill. Or if u do hold on, lean forward so ur arms are always bent and slack. Hanging on the treadmill throws ur hips out of whack.
In incline walking I finally found a cardio exercise that I can do and enjoy. My back, hip and knee problems prevented me from doing prettymuch anything else. But incline walking works, it's fun and, god do I feel a burn in my glutes and calves.
That is SO great to hear, Julilen!! I am glad you have found a combo that works great for you!
Shout out to all the power walkers out there I'm with you, I power walk and I'm tell you a one minute all out at 4.5mph and a 15% incline is killer
It really is!!
@@trainingtall absolutely

Running is very overrated and really old school.

That is amazing!! Congrats! Well done... keep up the amazing work!
That's impressive, I would love to see a video of this. I can't even run at that speed so it's hard for me to imagine that.
You can burn about the same walking at 15 incline and 3 - 3.5 speed
7.3 miles or Km?
I often do 3.5 mph at 15 incline for an hour and burn a little over a 1,000 cals… are you saying you do max incline of 15% at 7 plus mph for an hour straight? And you’re almost 60? I love this im def a jogger but i will now start power walking on a higher incline.
I'm calling bs at anybody powerwalking 4.5 at a 13-15% incline for 30 mins.
It's possible!
@@trainingtall yeah its possible but not easy by any means
It’s tough but doable
I do 5.0 at a 15% for 30 minutes, No wonder why I get tired after I finish, I rather walk in inclines than jog/run specially if you are overweight like me.
I'm doing 4.0 mph at 15% incline for 90 mimnutes a day from past 2 months

My treadmill highest incline is 10. What should I do?
Raise up the front
I do incline 15 and 4.3 speed for 56 minutes I burn 1000 calories
Nice!
How did you progress to that?
At 4.3, you must be tall. 15 will get you there! Nice...

Speed: 5

Incline power walking definitely works. I lost 30 pounds in 2 months because of it with a diet of course.
12 incline 2.6mph and 1/2 mile, then I have to reduce incline to catch breath and then repeat cycle a few times
I did 15 incline max steering on 3.0
Nice!!
I've been trying to combine running and power-walking I change the style every 5-10 minutes, and I do the whole thing for about 30-45 minutes. What do you think about that?
I think that is a great way to go! As long as you are getting your heart rate elevated - go for it!
The gym that I've been working out at is off for a week and I want to complete exercising I'm a power walker could u please explain it to me how can I do the blocks? For base , push and all out ? 🙏🏻
Even when I ran cross country I hated treadmills. I only used mine during bad weather.
I think you learn to love them over time! And with a good routine, it can be a ton of fun I think!
I do the max incline power walk at 3 mph
Yes...I love power-walking at the 12-15 incline... So,, kill ya knees if you want....not me.... #Burning#mo#calories!!!
What is the per unit impact on total work as a function of incline?
Not sure!
I always have the incline on #15 the entire time on the treadmill. I never run, always power-walk. Is that bad?
Not bad at all! The most important thing to be aware of: 'are you giving your absolute best?' IF you can confidently say after each workout that there is NO WAY you could have tried harder, then there will never be a problem with always power-walking!

Remember the science of interval training. Lows are just as important as those high zones.
On my treadmill I walk at 5.5 i don't know what that is in kmh or mph unfortunately
I powerwalk at 6 speed at 15% incline with support
I can warm up by walking on incline to do sprints on incline
15 % incline is which number of incline
Summary: While at incline, walking engages your muscles a lot more than running.
Good tips! Thanks!! ❤️🇨🇦
Thanks, Cherry! :)

Interesting. I'm sorry you're suffering from this pain! You may want to focus on working on a warm-up for your hips! I will make a video on this!
Didn’t think my hip pain would lead to something positive lol! Thanks, can’t wait to see the video :)
Hip pain is from hanging on the handles. Try walking without holding the treadmill. Or if u do hold on, lean forward so ur arms are always bent and slack. Hanging on the treadmill throws ur hips out of whack.
Why does it look like heat lamps are hanging from the ceiling lol.
