I am 41. Been gaming since Atari 2600/apple iic when I was a kid. Got a handme down 8088 IBM xt clone with 4 color cga graphics and on to ega, vga, svga. Then 3d cards like 3dfx Voodoo 2 add on and complete 3d cards like ATI rage pro/nvidia tnt riva, powervr kyro, Matrox etc.. That went on to voodoo 3 - voodoo 5(2 gpus 1 card and no performance loss anti aliasing the v5 5500 was amazing at the time to me). Voodoo died and nvidia bought their tech.
Then had ati Radeon, nvidia geforce 256 both dx7 cards.. Where this video starts from. I've seen it all and have been upgrading and loving the advancements in gpu tech since the 80s.
In the last two decades there have been sweet spot cards. Voodoo 5500 - > geforce 2 / raedoen - geforce 3 (start of pixel shaders and Xbox was based off of) - geforce 6800 (pixel shader v3 and baseline for 7800 which was what ps3 used) - ATI 9800 (half life 2 king) - 8800gtx/gts amazing unified memory and behemoth card that was high end for a number of years. Amd bought ATI 7890/7870 line of Radeon (ps4 based on) - geforce 1080/1060 gtx - geforce rtx 2080 / gtx 1660 line. Where we are today.
I can name every major game that pushed people to upgrade at the time. Quake 3, unreal tournament, doom 3, half life 2, far cry, stalker, Crysis, and then pc exclusives for tech kinda dwindled except for strategy and indie games. Crysis was the last pc pusher and consoles became lead platform for tech. Kida crazy how that turned out.

I still have a fully functional PC that is powered by the GForce 4-series graphics card ( I believe it was Gforce 4 4800 titanium AGP 8x or something similar to it). OS: Win XP. In a few years, it will be a 20 year old PC! Can you imagine that!?

Yeah crazy isn't it. I still have a pentium 3 650mhz with geforce 3 on agp slot, in storage. It will be 20 years old in a few months. The pc not the geforce 3. I originally had a voodoo 5 5500 (old pci) and stuck with it until games stopped supporting it. Loved the AA on that dual gpu card.
Also have a Athlon 64 3ghz with geforce 6800 that I used to play elder scrolls 4, doom3, half life 2 etc.. I gave it to my dad. He passed away in April and I got it back. I'd rather have my pops but it's nice having the box back. Last apg card I owned.
I wish I still had my 386sx 16mhz 1x CD rom sound blaster 32, 1mb svga card, 2400bps modem and windows 3.1, just for nostalgia.

Man, nostagia is my big weakness too. I have a brand new powerful PC, yet I have dual OS on it. On the older OS I still play older games such as BF2, BF1942, Doom 3 and others from time to time. But it is getting harder and harder to keep old OS working on brand new and powerful hardware. I see this being impossible after some time.

The Nvidia Riva TNT chip is what put Nvidia on the Map... I thought it was over hyped and ran like crap compared to the Voodoo2 I had... but since Nvidia bought out 3dfx they have become a force.

I would like a beastly desktop with at least 48gb of at least ddr3 ram, ddr4 would be even better, umm, amd radeon hd 7870 gpu AT LEAST, and dont forget the cpu, we wouldnt want it bottlenecking the gpu now, so a coffee lake cpu or a top of the line intel xeon would do, hmm, oh yeah, dont forget an insanely powerful 1100w power supply unit, hmm, and just for some very necessary icing on the cake, an ssd for my desktop to boot on with at least a 2tb hdd that I can store other things on. Did you get that all? 😂😂😂
it's funny to see how 90% of cards in 2017 are still running on directx11 and how 100% of cards are using GRRD5 ram from 2010. they were progressing so fast between 1999-2010 and then everything stopped.

So, in 4 years, from 2013 to 2017 Nvidia doubled their flagship performance. I am unimpressed, just like I'm unimpressed with
AMD when going from 290X to Vega64.
It's already two years since I'm stuck with an 8GB 390 and there's nothing worth the money for an upgrade.
Gone are the days of meaningful upgrade every one or two years in the $200-$300 price range. Rest in peace GTX 8800, Radeon HD 3850/3870, GTX 480 and Radeon HD 5850/5870!
Today, there is nothing at the $300 price point that's even 25% better than the $300 cards of two years ago.

Andrei Neacsu i think it is more then twice the performance, the 780ti is about as fast as 970 and if you compare it to 1060, 1060 is faster then 970, and 1060 has less then half the power of 1080ti but again you get to remmber that there so many more technologies and variants then raw power, for instance vega 64 has more compute power than 1080ti, yet 1080ti smoke it regarding gaming performance, also remember that in past Moore law was holding today it is not the case, the rate of die shrinking is way slower.

I had a Nvidia card in 2000, then an ATi in 2004, back to a Nvidia in 2009 in my gaming laptop and 2016 got a desktop gaming computer with a Nvidia GTX 1070. The funny thing about the graphic demos the ones in 2001-2005 looked very cool at the time and now all the rest looked basic on how games do look even underpowered. Why didn't they have demos that show lighting affects or water effects. Something really cool and eye pleasing like from a T2 movie. That chameleon demo looked like it was in HD but that was way before HD came out. I remember getting blown away seeing that back then.
