Unlike most other garden trees, Japanese Maples have a special allure and appeal that is apparent whether they are young nursery plants or venerable old, fully mature specimens. Here's a little video that celebrates their dignity and charm, and I hope encourages more of us to grow and enjoy them in our gardens.
Excellent review. Thank you! I just purchased a Bloodgood Maple for a planting bed in the front of my house. It will be a wonderful tree to see each day I leave and come home.
Absolutely, and it will be interesting for you to see it change with the seasons and watch it develop over the years. They say "you plant a tree for the next generation" but really (as I mentioned in the video), these maples are quite unique in that they look great at whatever age they are...., even young specimens look super.
Enjoyed your video! Thanks so much for posting it. And your accent is lovely. Can you recommend a Japanese Maple for me? I want one that I can grow in a pot on my townhouse patio in Boulder, Colorado. I have dappled sun to part shade and am in zone 6a. Can you recommend some smaller varieties with upright growth habit that are green in summer and red in fall? I am not a fan of the burgundy/purple/pink colors, but I do want a nice bright red in the autumn. I can't wait to try out one of these beautiful trees; I have admired them for years.
Mary Mitchell They don’t tolerate full sun, they need morning sun and afternoon shade. Certain varieties tolerate more sunshine but if you don’t want scorched leaves it’s better not to place them in full sun.
Thank you. The one I feature in the nursery segment Acer Tamukeyama is an excellent "tried and true" form. It is one of my favorites, a good performer, that grows well and holds it's purplish-red color well, but there's others like Crimson Princess, Garnet or Red Select that would work for you too. Green ones like Green Mist, Orangeola turn nice shades in autumn
Thanks, as you can probably tell I get a "kick" out of telling people about good plants. I was pleased to see those giant Echiums, the Fuchsias and the Gunneras etc. in your garden. Made me more than a little home sick. Loved your "Green Fields of France" too., one of the most moving songs ever!
Oh thanks. I do little on YT now. Facebook has become my blog. And yes. I can see you enjoyed sharing this exceptionally lovely garden. This last year or so, influenced by progs. like this, I've spent a lot of time(and money!!) revamping my acre.
Sounds like you are trying to start with small plants, maybe you could try a larger, more mature specimen that has foliage above rabbit height and also protect its bark with a tree guard. That should do the trick.

I'm being told by our local greenhouse not to put it in front of my house due to sun heat. Would you agree? Are they too fragile in full sun?

Great video. What would be a nice small Japanese form?
