    Not an electrician, I started watching because I needed my board updating and wanted to see what it involved. I've been with you ever since because I enjoy watching you train your apprentices and inform the viewer, love the banter and the humour too. I'm getting on and only just about keeping up with tech in general. Watching you programme in those devices so they'd talk to each other reminded me of Data from Star Trek, the speed your fingers were tapping! Another enjoyable vid, cheers Cory.

    I have just been reading an article on solar power; and with the huge shift of price hikes, I just have to say that your vlog has tilted the scales so far over, that all I need is a quote,some serious advice and a provider and installer of hi-spec panels.

    We have had 2.5kW of solar panels since 2012. We have a well insulated indirect hot water cylinder with high level and low level immersion heaters. Years ago I fitted a "Solar iBoost" unit which diverts anything over 100w that would go to the grid, into the water heating. This is set up to power the upper heater first and then the lower. Normally for several weeks in the summer the gas boiler is never switched on because all the water we need is from the solar panels. Even in the winter months it gives the water a boost.
    Incidentally, I keep an ongoing spread sheet about the solar production, feed in payments etc, The panels have more than paid for themselves, just in the feed in tariff, let alone what we have saved in direct usage.
    Thanks for a great channel. I am now a retired electrician but still watch this channel with great interest.

    • @jam99
      @jam99 2 года назад

      Also had iBoost installed for a number of years. For me, it paid for itself after 3yrs. It all depends on capacity and home use of solar, electricity and water but with current prices, I expect it would pay for itself a lot quicker.

    Cory, you’re a genius! I have a similar situation; installing HESS with a full DB and was looking at adding a 2nd smaller daughter DB for the Inverter MCB and energy meter. If I have all the MCBs swapped to RCBOs then I gain an extra 4 ways without the need for extra boards and wiring, Simples (well, apart from the increased cost of RCBOs!). Thank you. Really helpful.

    The other solar equipment I am a huge fan of is the Victron gear. I run that at my home here in Australia and it has not let me down even once. I did overspec the wiring though, which for the inverter at least will enhance its lifespan. My setup is more of an island setup however and the inverter automatically flicks over to the grid when the batteries run too low. I can charge them via the grid should I wish, or wait until morning for the solar to recharge them. The inverter then automatically transfers back to the batteries once a certain voltage/charge level is reached. Running 4.5kW of panels for just me, here in Australia that is plenty enough to run anything my heart desires, whenever and however I want. Although in the winter, my city of Melbourne can be very solar challenged a bit like the UK.

    Good video, I'm looking at a similar install. Very true what you are saying about the feed in tariff. I have a real issue with "selling" at 5.x pence per kWh to then have it resold at 20p+ per kWh. I'd rather export nothing than accept that "deal".

    Another great video! I am also having solar and batteries installed in a few weeks. My consumer unit is also full. I am going to suggest what you have done here by replacing them all with RCBOs; I’ve had power cuts recently (since maxing out the CB) and noticed that one RCD trips when the power comes back on which could be attributable to the earth leakage you mentioned.

    Wait did you just take the cable straight into the back entry without using a stuffing gland? I know there’s the seal on top of the Zappi unit but I always find it best to use a 25mm stuffing gland as they do provide a big enough gap to allow the gland to sit in. Other than that top install!

    A question regarding priotity in electric heating and appliances in general. If you were to get solar and such and wanted a device to only use grid power during the hours that solar isnt bringing in alot of power, How would one go about doing that? Would it be a entire grid wide thing installed or for each appliance that one would like to work like that?
    Would it just be some sort of switch changing between inputs or is there something more complicated revolving it?

    My understanding is that earth leakage into an AC RCBO will mean that it is possible that it will not trip, (not that it nuisance trips, it will not trip at all) and only a moderate amount will stop this safety feature.
    An A RCBO on the other hand, avoids this earth leakage problem as it is designed to allow it to trip, hence work correctly.

    • @duzzah
      @duzzah 2 года назад

      Type AC rcbos don't protect against DC leakage currents, where as type A does protect against DC and sinusoidal leakage currents. As pretty much all electronics run on DC, type A rcbos are essential/becoming mandatory.
      Cory mentioned nuisance tripping as it was a standard rcd protecting 5 or 6 circuits, as all the leakage currents of each circuit adds up for that rcd. Converting to rcbos and changing type to A helps prevent nuisance tripping and brings the install inline with new requirements.

    At one time (pre subsidies and FIT I think) you could run the solar into the meter and get the meter to run backwards, on a legal contract. the reading would be verified by post meter metering of energy drawn from grid, and energy created / energy supplied.

    • @JasperJanssen
      @JasperJanssen 2 года назад +2

      That is pretty much just a function of the type of meter. Those analog meters with a rotating disc would indeed run backwards when feeding back. Modern digital meters basically never do that, they have separate counters for in and out, each only ever going up.

    My PV Guru advised me that PV Panels + heat pump water heater were probably a better idea than straight solar-thermal. I'm *guessing* that's to do with the potential maintenance issues with having plumbing on your roof. Are the heat-pump water heaters making inroads in the UK? Dunno who did it first... that MyEnergy Interface looks just like the Tesla App. did, initially (now they've changed it so instead of a circle, there's an actual drawing of a house...

    • @jim575757
      @jim575757 2 года назад +2

      The PV is going to deliver power to the grid when the heatpump waterheater is at temperature. A solar collector with a boiler will stop generating when the boiler is at temperature. So stop generating money.

    Did you see in the news a few days ago, there's going to be a trial where the National Grid will draw power from electric car batteries (kinda reverse charging) during times then the National grid is seeing very high demand or available power generation is low.
    If it ever became widespread, would it have much affect on how car chargers are installed?

    • @cmjones01
      @cmjones01 2 года назад

      This is already happening. The charger installation is basically the same, but the charger has to be different because it needs to be able to discharge the car as well as charge it. At the moment that's only really possible with the Japanese CHAdeMO charger connector as used on the Nissan Leaf, for example, but the European CCS charger connector will be supporting it soon. The only other issue is that the charger needs to be connected to the internet in order to be advised when to charge and discharge the car according to your needs and the grid's needs.

    • @petermichaelgreen
      @petermichaelgreen 2 года назад

      Installation is the easy part.
      The real questions are:
      1. what will the financial incentives look like, will they be sufficient to make people want to sacrifice their car's battery life to help the grid? Will they create moral hazards (e.g. charge your car on a fixed-price supply and then discharge it in your house on a time of day supply to make money without really helping the grid)
      2. What will happen to the electricity price profile as renewables become an increasing part of the energy mix? Will we still have cheap electricity in the middle of the night or will things flip so the middle of the day when the sun is highest in the sky is the cheapest time?

    Have you done any calculations to work out the payback time for the cost of fitting and buying the Eddi against the cost of fuel it will save over its lifetime?
    I doubt you will get full payback for such a device as if the tank is normally heated by gas the saving is the price of gas kWh not electricity and gas is much cheaper than electricity.

    • @bencampbell2041
      @bencampbell2041 2 года назад +2

      You almost certainly wouldnt get a payback if you are receiving SEG at more than gas costs, or it will be exceptionally long time especially as Eddi costs so much and then add harvi costs as well.
      Also that top mounted immersion heater probably means that it will overheat without actually heating much of the tank?
      May missed out on 5% VAT on the Eddi by not getting it installed with solar.

    • @caparn100
      @caparn100 2 года назад +1

      @@bencampbell2041 Yes, I've got a Solar iBoost connected to my hot tank, I think it's very similar to an Eddi, I've had it for just over 7 years and in that time it has put 8700 kWh of electricity into my hot tank. If you compare this against the price of gas which is now about 3.5 p per kWh it has saved about 8700 × 3.5p = £304 (it has actually saved me less than that because the price of gas has been cheaper). The cost of the iBoost was £150 and the electrician charged £50 to fit it during installation of my solar panels. So it will just about get its cost back but the list price of the Eddi is about £400 plus fitting. So there is a very long payback on an Eddi (about 14 years). But if the price of gas continues to rise and the price does not return to normal levels there might be a chance of getting a small payback.

      @@caparn100 they made much more sense on the older FIT schemes with unmetered export payments

    • @caparn100
      @caparn100 2 года назад +1

      @@bencampbell2041 I've got a feed in tariff that I get nothing for exporting electricity to the grid so it's a benefit to me to use everything I generate (unlike new tariffs).
      I've just looked up and Octopus Energy pay 4.1p per kWh exported, this is higher than the price of gas so it would be better to export the electricity and use gas to heat the water. As this customer doesn't already have solar panels, they must be going on one of these new feed-in-tariff rates. It will actually cost them more to use the Eddi than just switch it off and use gas to heat water. Added to that they have to pay for the Eddi plus the installation costs. If there is an export meter then the Eddi is an incredibly stupid thing to fit on in on this job. It will cost them more to run it than having it switched off.
