So as a 21 or 22-year-old kid I stumbled into a bar in Portland, I want to say it was called the Candlelight bar. I ordered a beer and was lucky enough to catch seat at the front of the stage. I drink only 1/3 of my beer on the first set because I was mesmerized. It was my first blues experience and I came back as often as I could that one year I lived in Oregon.
Portland Oregon has a great blue scene with many very talented players. I spent many years there in the blue scene 15 or 20 years ago and it was fantastic, I still have friends there so I assume it’s still great! I’ve actually played with this guy, Terry Robb, he’s bad ass on that guitar!
Seriously man...Terry is a real musician who improvises everything he plays. He never plays anything the same twice. There are no tabs for 12 bar blues like this.
Terry grew up a block away from us in the Parkrose Heights school district. I still remember hearing the loud electric rock and blues practicing coming from his homes open windows when we were in our teens. I have watched his performances many times in our home town of Portland Oregon over the years. Terry plays as if the guitar was a natural extension of his body. A true master musician and artist. - Mark Seibold
We saw Terry picking for tips last night in Corvallis Oregon. Maybe Twenty people at the most listening in a dinner and cocktail house. Great great player who just kicks it beyond normal expectations.
Ya otta hear him and Mark Hanson and Doug Smith play together as the Acoustic Guitar Summit. Been listening and learning from this guy for 25 years....never ceases to amaze me!
It's the smooth and easy way he makes it flow that creates the groove. Guys like this amaze me. He's so comfortable with the instrument. The great ones make it look easy and sound great "every" time they play. I bet he's probably a nice guy too.
This is part of Terry Robb's style--he says he likes to play a lot of notes, and in this case, plays them fast. This is incredibly clean and this is an instance where fast = fun.
One of the happiest surprises about moving to Portland 27 years ago is seeing Terry playing over and over again, often on weekday nights just for tips in a cool dive bar. I’d frankly rather see him play, at any price, than Eric Clapton. Terry is Incredibly generous with his talents. What a treasure.
This just blows my mind! When you hear something like this all you want to do is to sit down with an acoustic guitar and play something like this, but you just don´t get how the hell he´s doing it ! It´s great inspiration though (and great music)
This is what I aspire to... It's amazing how learning to play the guitar has caused my musical tastes to change. I didn't used to care much for blues until I started playing. Now I really hear it...and feel it... I definitely feel this!
Me and my wife were sitting just off camera one night and had fun hanging with Terry and the guys one night after his show. The location is Halibuts on Alberta St in NE Portland OR
how does it feel to be a giutar blues god terry? jealouse and in awe. great talent. enjoyed every second. i feel like i play mary had a little lamb blues one note at a time after listening to you. keep it up
You're right and I appreciate what you're saying. It's just there are some people on RUclips who feel it's their God-given right to criticize even the most talented of musicians whom they could never even come close to in talent. You know the types I'm talking about. Thanks for the post!
I've taken about a half dozen lessons from Terry, mostly trying to figure out Fahey stuff (Terry produced some of his last records)...usually Terry would show up without a guitar, just pull some $99 piece of shit off the guitar store rack, then proceed to play so perfectly, I couldn't believe what I was hearing. He's truly a master, and a really good, down to earth dude. Check out some of his electric and slide playing, just awesome
No, I understood exactly what you said, and I respect your individual taste in the blues. It's definitely personal for everyone, which is why we all love it so much I guess.
I'm getting so tired of people being critical about his singing. Everyone works with what they've got! The guitar playing is world class and that's what's being featured. The vocals are as good as he can do. I'd like to see you or the others who criticize Terry's singing do 1/100th the job he can! When will people learn to say something nice or don't say anything at all. This isn't a place to facelessly criticize.
For the most part, besides an occassional dropped-D and very rare DADGAD, Terry plays in standard tuning. You won't find tab b/c he never plays a song the same - it's always off the cuff improvisation (and he can effortlessly improvise for any length of time). That's what makes him one of the greats in this field. Every time I've seen him play, he plays every song a little different. A real master of the genre!
I love Terry Robb! I heard him a lot in Portland, and years later, he signed his CD for my son who went on to become a guitar player.

Anytime you can make your Acoustic Guitar, sound like a Fender Strat, that's how you know you've accomplished something!
