What a great lesson, So very grateful, one of my all time you tube favourites, Completely different sound out of my harp that I have never heard before., I can bend the notes, but that vibrato is next level and the real key. A ****
@@Harmonicacom I met him at spah 2013 and he was super kind to me. We played sweet georgia brown together in front of everyone and it was one of the coolest musical things I've ever been a part of! Talk about pressure though. Pretty intimidating playin 1 on 1 with someone of his mastery. And I was not...playing a powerbender lol.
As a middle eastern musician I cant tell you how impressed I am with is. I can't believe that you were able to utilize that scale on the harp! I am still trying to figure out the bending and it's taking me quite some time :/
The nice thing is that all the bends are at their maximum amount, so you don't have to be as exact as (say) bending the 3 hole draw a whole step, which is very tough to get sounding right, and to sustain. Here you bend it all the way, so you just max it out, and it sustains well once you get the feel for it. This scale is also great for any song that uses the flat 2 lydian scale, so you can play C major, then Db lydian with this scale. Sounds similar but is two alternating scales instead of one.
Wow. Sounds like you've been doing this for a while. I've done it on keyboards, but would need 2 rapidly alternating harps to pull it off on harmonica. Your bending skills are most impressive. 😎👍😁🎶
Yeah, Mark. He's a master for sure!!! If you haven't seen my lesson on bending, you might enjoy it: ruclips.net/video/moVpn-mBFr8/видео.html Rock on, Luke
THANK YOU!!! I'm also experimenting with bending the 3D a half step down, rather than full release. The only problem is, unless one can do a 6 overblow, it won't translate to the middle octave. Either way...both ways...this is a great addition to my tool kit! Again, THANK YOU!!!
Make sure you've got the harp adjusted for the 4, 5, and 6 overblows...they are really tough without adjusting them. Once you start to get it, it's addictive, and gets easier...don't force it, they can be done very quietly too. 4 and 6 overblow, especially, are really helpful for blues. 5 overblow (for some reason, for me) is tougher to get, not sure why. Also on the very low harps (like G) the 4 overblow will be tougher because your tongue position needs to be so far back.
Great introduction! I usually play this scale as alternative (see Hungarian minor on Pat Missin's exotic scales for blues harp): -2'' -2 (or 3 blow, but you lose the vibrato) -3''' -3' (or 3 for gypsy) 4 -4' 5 -5 It has the "bend" quality to resemble a Duduk or Zurna (for quarter tones) - if you play it all day long, it will stick to you and you also master the lower octave bends much faster than any other scale!
I love playing th Phrygian Dominant scale. Said scale is also known as the Jewish Freygish scale, 1, b2, 3, 4, 5, b6, b7, 1. Nice to add the b3, too, for variety in improvising. This is an excellent exercise for those wanting to hone their overblow/overdraw techniques. I practice this daily, such a refreshing change from playing blues licks. Using this scale has allowed me to know what scale degrees I am playing, it has helped me understand the layout/landscape of the harp. It most definately helped me hone my overbends to a high degree, led me to learn "extreme" overbends, too, available to those who practice a lot. One needs a strong embouchure to execute "extreme" overbends.
Check out Hazmat Modine - Lost Fox Train if you want to challenge yourself with these notes! He's incredible ❤ Plus beat box and extremely difficult fast playing
Check out Hava Nagilah, this scale works perfectly for that well-known classic. Lots of versions out there, this one is pretty cool: ruclips.net/video/_SPXDAX4Ci8/видео.html
This lesson has been an eye opener. I can play several positions on a richter, but never tried an Arabic scale, and in what I assume is a first position. I think the scale pattern will lead to new ideas in other styles. Also any minor scale seems somewhat easier to improvise over. Thanks.
And the last portion of playing was quite simple...that part should be in the starting to make it more simple.....actually there are more stuff and less stoppage in between...it could be more simpler but yeah..thanks buddy for the efforts 🌟
Yeah you could try: - tilting the front of the harmonica up toward the sky so the part touch your lips points downward -lift the soft palette like when you yawn, open the back of the throat - pull the back of your tongue back so it feels like you're choking on your Tonge. Hope that helps!
you play Hijaz maqam/scale on Harmonica. Very impressive.

This is why I wanted a harmonica! I love the bluesy sound, but this Arabic/gypsy/circus style is where my goal lies.
Get a C minor harmonica. It will help.
Thank you sir. Very original for me . Love the sound it gives.
1:20 Vulcan music is my jam. Also....great video BP
Yes, BP is truly a master! And how cool to play this gypsy scale on a regular tuned diatonic harp!

Lol this video is like a tutorial for Kashmir and Miserlou.
And Hava Nagilah ;)
Yes, definitely close resemblance to Miserlou.

Just re-visiting this!
Am I correct in saying some call this the double harmonic major scale?
If you flatten the 7th then it’s Phrygian dominant
What's up @TheHarmonicaBarge! Love your content. Yes, that is a correct name for this scale. Same scale in "Miserlou"
Yes, and since we're geeking out here, Phrygian Dominant is the 5th mode of the Harmonic Minor scale.
@@Harmonicacom thanks very much :)
@@Harmonicacom brilliant thanks- really enjoying playing with this!
this was sooo helpful

Yes, Stephen you are correct, that is 1st position Arabic scale.
Really useful and also impressive, i found bending much harder on the big river
Beautiful! I need to learn how to bend
Oh wow I have got to get me one of those !!!
I love this lesson!!! It changed how I view the harmonica! Do you think that any particular key sounds best when playing this scale? Thanks!
Allways a pleasure to watch your tutorials! Thank you!
Wow I was listening to Brendan Power on Spotify like two days ago.
Master.
I have not the ear or lips for that precision bending on those scales (Phrygian?), so I reach for the chromatic and try to mimic some Antonio Serrano.
Use a chromatic tuner to practice your bending till you have a feel for it
Great! It needs to be shared... thanks!
thank you
An extraordinary lesson!! Different!! And excellent. Thank you very much from Argentina.
I agree with everyone else. Killer vid and sound. I'm gonna work on this. Thanks.
