So jealous! But happy for you. You are indeed lucky. I think Ella was the hardest working person in show business. She toured constantly. I think she just knew that in order to keep it and keep developing she had to be going 200mph. Like a Maserati or BMW driving gingerly would wreck the engine, she had to get out on to the autobahn and push the limits.
Ella is the great mother of Jazz. Her melismatics are natural perfection. It surprises with mystique in unpredictable tonal jumps, just like Jazz should be.

Thanks for the info, but one correction. At 33 : 26 the song is not "Groovin' High" but rather "Ray's Idea" composed by Ray Brown. Oh and from what I've read, the drummer is Joe Harris.
@@timolaf2798 Tim, Thanks for the correction about Ray's Idea at 33:26. However, if you look at photos of Freddie Waits and Joe Harris, it does appear that the drummer on this performance is Freddie Waits.
Ellas' version of "For Once In My Life" "is so touching, my tears flow.....and maybe "Summertime" is her best live version of these song ever! Outstanding!
I’m amazed not only by the quality and musicality of Ella’s voice but also her ability to tell the stories of the songs so expressively and clearly! Also, the musicians are doing a great job and I love their energy.
It's even more amazing when one realizes that Ella had little formal education. Despite this, Ella's diction was flawless even with the complicated lyrics she often sang. This is one of many reasons why composers were thrilled with Ella's versions of their songs. Her songbook albums of the 1950's are a wonder to behold.
The most naturally gifted, supremely talented vocalist that has ever been. You even see it in reactions of the band members around her. The awe she inspired was well deserved.
Ella Fitzgerald is the first name you think of when someone mentions outstanding female jazz singers. Dubbed ‘The First Lady of Song,’ Fitzgerald had an extensive career that ran into the late 80s, earning 13 Grammy Awards, and setting the standard for future jazz artists. She is known for her flawless diction, her silky tone, and her incredible ability to improvise using her scatting skills. 33:33 [Pink Wafer Club]
I have no ideia of how many times I've heard this rendition of Summertime, but somehow... I get chills and goosebumps at every. single. time. It has to be the best version ever sung. You gotta love the smile in the pianist's face at the "one of these mornings".
Ella was never afraid to try something completely different in the moment. It doesn't always work, but that doesn't matter because it's so exciting and when it does work it's pure genius. I'm grateful there's so much live concert footage of Ella. By the time I got to see her live she couldn't walk anymore. Don't worry she could still swing and the voice was thrilling. But I appreciate getting to see how physical she was in concert. Of course when she first went to the Apollo theater she entered the competition as a dancer so it makes sense that movement is essential to how she produced sound. I'll never get enough Ella no matter how long I live. Thanks for posting.♥️🍾🥂
I also appreciate the variety of sounds she produces and how she is unafraid to use subtlety. Her use of dynamic variation is amazing. Some contemporary singers just belt all their songs to the point where it seems they’re trying to show off instead of tell a story. But Ella tells the story.
