  • Tascam DA40 Professional DAT recorder with the dreaded Mecha.Com.Err message. Owners manual says send for repair.
    OK, lets fix it. A search of the internet shows nothing for this, so lets dive in with test gear and find the fault.

    I've just bought a Tascam DA-45HR 24-BIT High Resolution format DAT deck which has the same error. I will be doing a video on channel when I try to repair it, but will certainly be referring to your superb video on the mechanically identical DA-40. This is a huge help, so many thanks for that. I also have a fully working DA-30 MKII.

    Thanks for a really great clear video on how to do some simple maintenance to get these classic decks up and running. After watching you video a couple of times . . I waded on in and have just successfully changed all 3 rubber belts on my DA-40 and everything is now working silky smooth. I also cleaned the micro "tack" switches whilst I was in there per your other video. Really, really pleased with how it went. I did have a heart murmur when I first tried it after completing the work as the dreaded "Mech Comm Err" message appeared. I was only getting a "Loading Error" message before . .. so I was pretty sure it was just the belts. Anyways, the "Mech Comm Err" was caused by me trying the mechanism without putting the load tray front panel back on. Once that went back on . . we were rocking. Cheers Again

    Dave,
    Thanks for doing this repair. I'm still learning, but I'll know that if I run across one of these machines with the Mecha.com.Err message, I won't be so intimidated.
    I am amazed that the replacement belt was so expensive. It's hard to believe that Tascam couldn't use a standard belt size that was readily available. Maybe they just wanted to make some extra money?
    Best, Tom

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  6 лет назад

      That was Tascam being Tascam. Just like Sony being Sony, they used to do that crap too so you had to buy their expensive parts. Both Panasonic and Sony did that with horizontal output transistors . They used a really common number, but if you use a generic version it would overheat and burn out.

    Thank you very much for doing this. In fact I have the same unit and its throwing the same code. Mine so far seems to be one of the micro switches for the tray open and close mec. I also have a Panasonic 3700. Hopefully I can rob the switches. Trying to get mine working so I can archive audio from an old radio friend who passed away. Thanks again for sharing your expertise .

    Hey Dave, recently I picked up one of these units (for alot more then 20 bucks) but it had problems and needed some work (of course). The mechanism and transport system was a mess. I had to tear both down to their bases, and wow, was it a can of worms I had opened. The mechanism (to me) was built so poorly and made so complicated that I assumed that Tascam never ever wanted to have anyone work on these units. Plastic fragile parts where metal should have been used, jammed mechanism, pin switches everywhere, and encoder switch that is hard to reach for cleaning (didn’t get it apart to clean), and don’t get me going on those almost invisible molecular nylon washers - don’t ever drop one. Boy, the Sony systems sure seems alot better designed for servicing. So the hobby-torcher-work continues ......

    Great video, I have a DA30 with what appears to be the common loading belt issue. This was very helpful although the DA30 (not MK2) is a different layout). Apparently Othodontic belts that Mr.GotNoEvidence recommends are a very cheap and stronger alternative to Tascam's rip off priced ones. £2.95 for 100 pcs! I got those on his recommendation.

    Neat machine and a great repair!
    The tape looks like a mini DV video tape.
    It it the same type of tape transport used in mini DV video camcorders?

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  8 лет назад +1

      +old64goat No totally different.MiniDV used evaporated matel tape DAT uses metal particle tape. Also the width. DV is 1/4' or 6.35mmDAT is 4mm, which is the same as the old audio cassette.Also MiniDV for video wrapped the drum 180' whereas DAT uses only a 90' wrap. Therefore the tape wear on DAT is much lower than video tape because there is less contact area. The drum spins at 2000 RPM in SP and 1000 in LP speed. DV spins at 9000 RPM. Because the heads are only in contact with the tape 50% of the time there needs to be memory buffer. So the data gets dumped during head contact, and stored in memory for the 50% of the time that there is no tape to head contact.

    I have the dreaded "Mecha.Com.Err." message as well. When I opened up the guts, I found the little load belt in the bottom of the cabinet. I'm assuming that's the likely culprit, and that's where I'll start. But do you think I have voltage/regulator/capacitor issues as well?

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  2 года назад

      The load belt causes that issue as well.

  • @video99couk

    Interesting. I have the very similar DA-30MKII, I had to change the loading motor belt but it's otherwise been superb. Alas no head hours readout on the 30 models, but it will sometimes play poor tapes where my consumer grade Sony machines struggle. I also now have a Sony PCM-7040 studio machine. OK, I probably have too many DAT machines already, but I really want a Tascam DA-45HR.

      +12voltvids Yeah it kind of sucks that this business does not exist any longer, As a young kid i started to study to an electrician back in 1994-95 and i wanted to go for electronics in second and third grade. But as i was yound and dumb i didn't do what i was suppose to do in school so i got kicked out. But i have my revenge on my self since i restarted my education back of fall 2014. As soon as i am done i think i shall try to see if i can get the education to become an electronics engineer for construction.
      Lets see what the future brings if ever the service type of job can return, its a shame that we throw away things that there is so small problems with like capacitors etc.

      +coondogtheman1234 On on the old Radio Shack DMM. That was directed at one of my co workers at the shop I worked at. He was always stealing my meter. The boss had a real nice fluke 77, but after someone dropped it the boss said get your own meter, so I bought the cheapest one I could find. Still works, but not very accurate.I plan to do a demonstration doing some measurements with it and my fluke. It does do some things that my fluke does not though, like measure the gain on a transistor.

      @coondogtheman 8 лет назад

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  8 лет назад

      +coondogtheman1234 Pretty much. Well Clive had a nasty habit of breaking things. He once stuck my meter probe in to measure a live circuit, and hit the B+ rail. Blew the nice sharp probe tip off my meter, and then called it an accident. He was an accident, and I ended up firing him.One of my pet peeves in live is that word "accident"That word should be struck from the English language. There is no such thing as an accident. There is cause, and effect. The effect of my probe being vaporized by a huge capacitor discharge. The cause, was Clive bumbling his way through and being careless.When I asked him to buy me a new lead set he said it wasn't his fault. When I asked the boss to buy me a new lead set, he said I shouldn't have leant it to clive. Lesson learned. That is why the boss didn't want anyone using his nice Fluke meter.I made a few enemies over the years. Had a friend want to "borrow" my camera so he could take pictures on his holiday. I said Sorry I don't lend my equipment. He got all pissy, his girlfriend of the time got all pissy. Called me a f*uking a**hole. My wife said why don't you just loan it to him. I said, are you willing to buy me a new one if it gets broken or stolen because I am sure they won't.Well I still have my camera, and I still have my wife, and I lost a friend over it. Apparently I spoiled their holiday.

      12voltvids
      I don't loan my DVDs to people b/c I loaned a friend one of my games and it came back scratched and it wouldn't play. Then recently a family friend wanted to borrow a few of my DVDs and I said no. I was like "what do you think I am a video store?" I didn't say that though. Many of my movies mean a lot to me like my Mark Wahlberg movie collection which I'm still adding on to. and I don't want them getting scratched. If I had a way to rip all of my DVDs to a hard drive of some sort like a media playback device that hooks to your TV that would be great. Then I just pick a movie and watch it. and I've only loaned one of my cameras once and it came back fine but with tons of cool pics and videos. That was cool.
      That meter you have is a neat one. I have a RadioShack brand one that I rescued out of their dumpster. I cleaned it all up and it works great. The only issue is the 23A 12 volt battery. Might just wire a 9V to it but theres no room.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  8 лет назад

      +coondogtheman1234 I learned at a young age that if you loan something, you might as well say goodbye to it. I loaned an old school friend my LP Steve Miller Band back in the 70's. He stuck it beside a heater and gave it back to me warped. I went over to his house all fired up (I was about 11 at the time) and demanded that his parents replace the copy. They told me to beat it. I went home, and my dad went over to have a word with his dad. Things went down hill from there. My dad got fired up, and my friends dad, who was a cop, proceeded to arrest him for uttering threats.I never forgot that lesson. Don't loan anything because when the fit hits the shan, whoever borrows and breaks it can just say too bad so sad. Oh, and I didn't sit down for a month after my dad got through with me for sending him into a hornets nest.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  7 лет назад

      Check the alignment. You need to scop the head preamp and check the waveform. If one of the guides is out of alignment it will mute the audio. When you go into search mode the audio mute is disabled so you can hear the searching. Dirty or worn heads can also cause this problem, as can bad surface mount electrolytics in the preamp. I know Sony had a problem with this, but the only thing I have had go wrong with my DA40 was the 5v regulator, and I bought it for 20.00 in that condition to fix.

    • @12voltvids

      +zx8401ztv According to the owners manual, there are many commands, like tape load error, and the remedy. This one it says to take it to authorized service center.Now this message could be caused by a number of things.It is just a generic message that tells the user that the mechanism is not communicating with the system control. When it initializes the mechanism attempts to run the loading motor to check that it is free. In this case the 5 volt supply was low, so there was no feedback. That 5 volt supply would be for one of the digital circuits, so no control of mechanism. No control of mechanism, no feedback, no feedback, communication error.The pin switches on the tape compartment, and tray will also cause an error. That is why they were cleaned first as I have had problems with those type of switches in the past.

It is the first time I have even seen one of these machines.I repaired a Tascam DA30 Mk2 for a local musician about 20 years ago, and other than that I have never been inside one. That just shows that I can pick up something I have never worked on and figure it out how it works without a schematic, or service manual.

There was an ad out saying that they go for 300 or more working (which they do) and that it had Mechm.Com.Err on the screen and if you know what that means then you know how to fix it. Well now everyone knows what that means. I have too many DAT machines here myself. 4 full size and a DAT Walkman, plus an old car player.

    Well, for the cost of the deck in broken condition, plus the cost of the belt, plus the cost from your parts stock and your labor, that's still a bargain compared to what it would cost to buy this deck in working condition.
    Definitely the moment to be stoked. Would have loved to see the look on your face once you've seen that "it's alive!"

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  8 лет назад

      +Watcher3223 That happened when I found the regulator that was bad.The belt wasn't that much, but shipping it from the states was, and then the exchange. Will be about 26.50 after exchange rate is factored in, so 46.50 my cost. This is obviously the best DAT deck I have now by far, and with only 200 hours on the drum (real hours and you can not reset that counter) this unit will be working for many years. The DA40 was right at the end of DAT lifecycle as far as Tascam went, so this one has very few hours on it.

    • @Watcher3223
      @Watcher3223 8 лет назад

      12voltvids Yeah, just shy of 200 hours on the old "odometer" when you checked it on this video.
      Hasn't really been broken in, so to speak.
      $46.50 is still a bargain for a barely used, fully working DAT deck, all things considered.
      You could resell it and make a nice profit, if you wanted to.
      But, I'm guessing that if you really needed a DAT deck, you'll never want to because it's hard to find anything like that at that low of cost.

      I needed another DAT deck like a need a hole in my head.I now have 4. I record from satellite service on my DTC75ES. The 790 is in the living room. I have the 670, and the DA40 in the studio. The DA40 will be the one I use now as my main deck for recording stuff to the computer. I put 10 hours on it in 3 days.I see there is someone on Ebay asking 300US for a DA40 with the MechComError on the display. I offered him 10 for it, he countered with 90, and I said sorry I already bought one for 20, I offer 10 for broken equipment take it or leave it.I like the format as it is real convenient for recording music service off satellite or TV service and then editing the tracks I want to keep onto the computer. Tape is more forgiving when looking for a song to record, and I can do it digitally. Trying to cue up say my PVR to play the music back is like hearding cats. Press the skip button it goes ahead 30 seconds. Press the back, and it jumps back 7. The search has no sound, so it is real hard to cue things up. On tape it is a snap to do, and when I get tired, I just stop the tape, and when I pick up again the tape is where I left it ready to continue.. Once I get through a tape and get everything off it I want, I bulk erase it, and start over. I have over 100 tapes with lots of stuff recorded over the years including rare bootlegs, but for the most part I use 3 tapes. Every few months I will spend a day recording the playlist from the music service, and then spend the next few weeks copying the tracks I want to my computer. I have gotten thousands of tracks this way, all totally legal as it is no different than recording off the radio.

      I saw that listing, too.
      I was shaking my head at that $300 asking price.
      And nice arrangement, on getting music from a streaming playlist using DAT whereupon you can send it to the computer (willing to bet you get it from the music player digitally and then send it to the computer digitally through S/PDIF).

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  8 лет назад

      +Donald Ellett No it is too thick. I tried that, and the results were disastrous. Ate the tape.O ring is too stiff, and stalls out the motor. This belt is very fine, and provides good torque transfer, without loading down the motor.Trust me I tried to find a suitable replacement. The though of spending 20.00 US for something that should cost about .50. That's highway robbery, and I am sure they planned it that way. They could have put a toothed belt in like they did for the reel drive pulley driven by the capstan motor. Or they could have made it gear drive. The belt is actually a safety part. If a tape were to jam, or the mechanism were to jam the belt will slip before the torque is high enough to bend parts.

    two things um not liking much anymore, 1 - tapes, and why, 2 - belts. so many old tape recorders need BELTS, a pain in the ass to find. all to often, it's a pain to get in there to change the dam things. No more belt or wheel drive, uma direct drive nut now. I have an Optimus DCC deck, haven't turned it on in years. I get in moods when I seeiously think about getting rid of ALL TAPE recorders, I have many reel, 8 track, cassette, micro-cassette, dat, and video TAPE recorders,( beta, vhs, vhs-c, 8mm, dv). I much prefer digital. ld, ced, dvd, and hdd disks are nice. BUT now I really like the ALL DIGITAL multi track, multi mode digital recorders, no moving mechanical parts to fail, just zapping. Sony and Olympus both have pocket digicorders that easily fit into a shirt pocket for under 300$, very nice. I really like my PVR with 500gb hdd and dvd burner. TIVO on steroids. iPods killed tapes. Oh those "I don't like tapes" moods, oh woe is me! Don

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  8 лет назад

      +umajunkcollector I don't use tape much these days either. All I use is DAT and it is for specific operations. Just to log music from my TV service, and satellite dish.Once the tapes are recorded over the course of a few days, I sit back, and play them, and dump the tracks I want to keep onto the computer to add to my collection. Much more convenient than pissing around with digital recorders. I could do it on my DVR, but the problem is trying to cue things up on that are a total joke. Tape makes it easy. Then when I get tired of dumping tape, I just stop and the next time I feel like recording stuff I start up where I left off. With digital, once you close the file and open it again you start at the beginning of the file.

    • @umajunkcollector
      @umajunkcollector 8 лет назад

      yup, two different worlds, mechanical editing vs software editing. I like my tape junk WHEN IT WORKS, but get mad when it doesn't, and just want to get rid of it rather than fix. My Teac 3440 quad RtR plays, but record has issues. It just sits there...
