    Great Video - thanks - I have a DA-30 that has been in the closet for 20 years. Had similar problem - tape would drop but not wrap around head/play. I did a bit of isopropyl alcohol and Q-tip cleaning, then used a Q-tip to put a bit of MG Chemical Super Contact Cleaner with PPE on the rails and around the moving parts. Then I used a hair dryer to warm the entire transport mechanism up, then while it was still warm, I put in a tape and eureka! Then I unloaded the tape, went back in with alcohol to clean up any oily bits and then loaded and unloaded the tape several times. This got me going without having to perform the major disassembly. Have loaded several different tapes, done full wind/rewind and played about 20 minutes of audio so far and all is good. Using the AES/EBU output to an old MOTU box and into Audacity to do a direct digital transfer of many live concerts and audition tapes from the 90's. Hopefully my shortcut won't come back to haunt me!

      @oreilletube 2 года назад

      Hey just wanted to congratulate you on this "shortcut" of yours, it also did the trick for me (no hair dryer though) last little problem is on a certain tape it won't rewind totally because of? to tight of a tape inside the cartridge? or slipping belt around the pulley? anyway, way easier than disassembling the whole thing thx!

    • @NS-bj3yl
      @NS-bj3yl 2 года назад +1

      @@oreilletube Jean-Pierre, glad this was helpful! I have successfully transferred about 40 hours of material and have at least that much to go. I had a minor issue with only one tape so far…was binding a bit but a second rewind/fast forward solved it. With your issue, it might be the tape sticking to itself….used to be an issue with old open reel tape that wasn’t stored in a temperature and humidity controlled space. You might try manually advancing the tape reels by carefully sliding the bottom of the cassette open (little catches in the slots…small non ferrous tool will release them), then lift the front cover up 90 degrees and gently use something (again non ferrous is safest) to turn the centre hubs to advance or rewind the cassette. You may be able to see your problem that way as well. Ideally don’t touch the tape! And don’t apply too much force! I would back up the playable portions before attempting this! Good luck!

    I've got the same machine Dave. Mine started making a fluttering sound playing tapes, I cleaned the spinning heads, but it didn't solve the problem... and I think it ""automatically"" recorded over my music. I tried playing a tape several times, it fluttered at first, then when I was rewinding it, it quit searching and playing, like there's no music to play. So I didn't put anymore good tapes in it to be safe. It's a very complex machine.

    I have the same unit that was unused for quite a few years. When I fired it up, it seemed to work fine, but then it started snapping the DAT tapes during play.
    I am guessing, without taking it apart yet, that the supply reel may be hanging up and the take up reel and pinch roller is probably tugging at the lazy (or none working) supply reel putting excessive stress on the tape. Besides the cassette tray belts that you mentioned, are there transport belts as well, or is it a direct drive mechanism? Any info you can share would be helpful. Thanks.

      This one is on the back burner for a couple of reasons. For one I dont have a service manual as if yet but the main reason is it only has the standard speed and the majority of the tapes I have that I would be playing are recorded in LP which this one does not play. So as far as a machine I would use, this one is like that Panasonic 3700 I overhauled a few years ago. It is sitting in storage and has not been used since because it won't play the majority of my existing tapes and I really deny record anything to tape these days. If it played LP then I would be more interested in servicing it.

    There is no simple solution to get rid of that sticky grease. One is to dismantle and use ultrasound hot bath with detergents. But with these DAT or VCR mechs, drums and all electronics stuff can't easily and reasonably be disassembled. The only and hard way is to dissolve and scratch, pull and dismantle... try and get things progressively back to live, and hey, that's what you do!
    The RF signal looks weird, does not look like mechanical problem, most probably from bad caps in the preamp, or a bad mixer transistor or diode. Sony DATs preamp have caps problems, but Tascam normally uses different circuits with different troubles... and solutions. Anyway, as far as SMD caps are involved...
    We're viewers are sticked on our screens, awaiting for the next episode: DAT 2!

      I'll probably get back on it tomorrow. Today was an adventure filled day at the bank co-signing for my 22 year old daughter to get a small loan. That and a video recovery that I had to babysit because the guide posts on the camera were wandering all over the place when the video was recorded 20 years ago, and it made recovery a challenge. (I got a 100% recovery from the 8mm tape BTW)
      So tomorrow I will sit down and stare at this a little longer as I await parts to fix my Panasonic DVD recorder.

Would you just prefer that I mute the mic and you just have total silence because that is the option to conversations in the other room or a tv running in the background in the other room resulting in a copyright match for audio. So 2 choices. Mask the sound with music or white noise or mute the sound. White noise would annoy everyone. And don't expect any compassion about your hearing because I live with tinnitus 24 hours a day and have since I was a teenager and thought playing loud music and going to concerts was a good thing.
