To my understanding "Hruodland" is the medieval French spelling of "Roland". As for this watch, I like it. Everything seems well aligned. And little things like the signed rehaut and the writing on the dial make it appear a little more fancy compared to the San Martin which looks a bit austere by comparison with its uninspired dial inscriptions.
Wooohoooo! I think it was me that explained how to pronounce Hruodland. So I feel quite honoured to hear you say it that way :D I have often wondered if Hruodland was being a bit cheeky with that name, since you can say you are wearing a "Rol..." (followed by a mumble). Which brings me on "rehaut", which isn't pronounced "ree-how". The word is French, and is pronounce roughly as "ray-o" (with the "o" short like at the start of the word "orange" rather than long like at the start of the word "opal"). Or you could avoid the issue and call it a "flange" (which is what "rehaut" means anyway).
I think Hruodland nailed it. I have a 6.5 inch wrist. San Martin is a bit large with the 53 mm middle male end link; and Cronos has alignment issue with the magnifier and clasp is not very smooth. The signed rehaul is a very nice touch.
I am looking for the Hruodland/Cronos/San Martin comparison! The rehault on the San Martin is too high, it ruins the look of the watch... just my opinion.
Great review 👍. Along with others here, I don't like an engraved rehaut, particularly if it is that rough. But what I can't understand is why these homage manufacturers are copying the change to 21mm lugs! Either stick with 20 or if they have to change, jump to 22mm, nobody has 21mm straps lying around.
Several weeks ago, when I subscribed to your channel as a show of support during your recent "difficult times", I mentioned that homage watches really weren't my thing. But having watched more than a few homage reviews, both here and elsewhere, I'm suddenly interested in the possibility of an affordable "submariner". So I will cast my vote of support for comparing side-by-side the three options you mentioned during this review. If I'm going to dive into homage watches, I may as well buy the BEST! 😅
everything is a homage of something... i bought into the SEIKO gaslight by people I know "get SEIKO then ROLEX"... compared my SRP dial to a ROLEX in person and was devastated to find I had paid a tonne for something that borrowed heavily from the ROLEX dial when i could've just bought a tonne of ALIEXpress watches to find the style I like faster before going into the big boys club
@@pattycbproper1080I’ve never understood the allure of Seiko.. bad bracelets, bad clasps and always misalignment issues. Hope you found what you were looking for though.
Agree with others, the rehaut looks so rough. It would have been better to just have it polished. It's nice to see the original clasp but why is the lug width 21mm? There are just too many negatives, and other watch brands would be a better purchase. There are so many diver homages to pick from now.
I like the logo for a diver,as for the rest, the movement on yours is about as good as it gets,i feel it was likely adjusted to perfection prior to shipping to you. The macro shots show the engraving on the rehaut looks rough, and a dusty dial, even though not visible to the naked eye,is a little disconcerting, makes one wonder about the quality control.........but it is a timeless design and it does look nice.
Thanks Gary. I own a Hroudland Aquatimer homage and have been really impressed with the quality, lume and excellent accuracy of the PT5000 movement. Cheers Noel
Good "Subby" homage ! I've got the San Martin in black and green. Love them both, but this looks pretty good as well. Very impressive, nice logo as well ! Sucker for a nice Anchor. Great review as always, cheers !!!
Right off the bat that essay on the dial is off putting, I do like their logo, very cool. The rest does look pretty solid though. Nice to see a different clasp and PT movement too. Impressed with the lume as well. A few issues but not deal breakers. Great work with the review Gary.
I am glad you reviewed this, just the fact that it is thinner makes it a winner in my book. I like the anchor, and don't like empty space on the dial so I think the "essay" is cool
Marvelous to see you have taken back your intro :) I'm still looking for either/or the best two tone---gold+black one of these and maybe a GMT version in the same gold+black for under US$300ish. I'd pay a bit more for a superb example. Or is the Pagani my best bet? Thanks :)
Hi Gary great video nice watch does it offer that much more value to the steeldive 1953 sub? I’m trying to limit my outlay at the moment and was going to try the steeldive as a sub try out as never had a subby
Love their anchor logo ⚓️. Very nautical. The scalloping around the bexel looks good. One of the criticisms of the SM (I have one) is that - like the Rolex - it's quite sharp on the fingers when you grip it.
It looks great. Could you do a comparison on Seiko/Orient vs homage like San Martin/Chronos/Redlund and why you might pickup one over the other. Not necessarily the look but build quality, size, vs cost etc.
Just a stupid question(maybe 🤔).. You use a lot the uv lamp to boost the lume, like all of us-I also have one and it's soo cool to see the watches came to life... But shouldn't we take care (glasses/gloves or any kind of protection for the hands?) when used so frequently, seen sometimes the poor quality(safety) of these lamps? We can have many watches, but we have only two eyes and hands.😉 Keep up the great work, Cheers from Italy!!!
There's 2 nicks on the case at the 10 position, did it come with those? Honestly at any price point I'd be extremely disappointed. Blemish appears @ 10 min 17sec - 10 min 19sec
The engraved rehaut would be a good addition, if it was carried out better, as it is it detracts from the watch. How do you get laser etching to look so poor ! Was the art file produced by a child with crayons
One of the first homage watch I bought was a Hulk Sub homage, it was cheap and the quality was lacking. I have been thinking of getting a quality one, there’s a lot to like and a lot to dislike with this Hroudland. I agree the competition on this « model » is fierce.
One more idea - with all the new connections to the stores and viewers and everything. Can you get an actual submariner for review? Or any other Rolex, if not?
Are you sure it's not actually Rolex shutting down your channels with RUclips? These Homage watches are becoming extremely well done and popular. I have a friend that has been on a waiting list for a Submariner he recently purchased a Pagani just because. Now he's asking himself is the prestige of having a Rolex on your wrist worth that kind of money? He's now looking at San Martin and I'll be sure to send this video too. Thing is with him it's got to be a Batman.
Well he admitted to having my channel shut down…so yeah…fairly confident and Rolex don’t need to complain anonymously, they’ve got the balls to write the channel owners on Rolex headed paper threatening legal action…
I can't believe how nice you were to this, given how many sub homages you've analyzed in the past. Apart from the nicely regulated PT5000, there's so much that's ugly/wrong about this: (1) the poor quality bezel, (2) the ridiculous and superfluous dial text ("SUBMERSIBLE"? "Professional?") (4) 21" lug width - why???, (5) the signed rehaut - not only do I not want "hroudland" engraved all over it, but the quality of the engraving/etching looks terrible, (6) the poor finishing, (7) the cheap bracelet with fixed male center links, (8) the logo - I find the anchor to be trite, but that's subjective, (9) the clasp with way too much engraving on it. I'd definitely enjoy an updated "sub homage roundup", but please don't bother including this one. If you're looking for competitors to San Martin and Cronos, I'd vote for Seestern and Steeldive. I think I've bought a watch from every brand on aliexpress, and those two both stood out from the rest, blowing me away for all-around quality with great finishing, perfect bezels, solid feel, well regulated movements, and super value. (I can't comment on their bracelets since I always use straps.)
The signed rehaut looks pretty rough,I have a Cadisen Day Date homage with a signed rehaut and the finsh is much better. Other than that it's a fine homage although the 21mm lug width makes finding an alternative strap or bracelet more difficult. Final let down is the brand name. 👎👎⌚😒
Nice review. I would admonish your viewers to not buy an homage watch though if they have any interest in collecting watches. This is what I did a couple of years ago.. The homage design is going to wear thin the longer you have it. On the plus side, at least this one does not have an NH35 movement.
I wish one of these factories would shave off back of case edges. Often submariners are not comfortable long term use while working etc. Always gave red irritating spot on the wrist. Only reason I’m not buying any of these type of cases with sharp edges around the back of case !
I bought this watch, and it’s okay. On mine, the bezel “spring” basically broke in less than a week, meaning there is nearly no resistance. It’s almost like a friction bezel now. As for the rest, the case, crystal, and alignment are pretty good. Bottom line, it’s okay, but I wouldn’t buy it again. By the way, I got this for $38 in an AliExpress sale. Hope this helps.
@@wastedaga1n Anytime! Though I’ve never handled one, the Steeldive SD1953 300m diver might be a good option, and it’s about $70 during the sale after discounts. It’s an automatic with NH35, though, not Quartz.
