Holy hell, this video is so high quality, I can’t believe it doesn’t have more views! If it’s worth anything, this showed up in my suggestions unprompted so the algorithm must be picking it up!
Local man, Ronnie Fishcakes, almost learns the taste of grass and spray paint while attempting to figure out how to use skates on solid ground 2024 colorized
I somewhat agree that older games do have a leg up over current ones, but even though I do enjoy simple games that have a clear difficulty curve. I do also think there’s a place for traditional modern games, two of my favorite gaming experiences as of late were spider man 2 and replaying sonic adventure 1. I think it mostly comes down to how much free time you have in life. As a kid you want a game that you can pour hours and hours into and/or online games so you can play with your friends, but as you get older, unless your job involves playing video games you generally want simpler shorter games that are more than likely single player, or it’s just as simple as a taste thing.
There are two other games I’d recommend playing after JSR, There is a Rebootish/sequel game called Jet Set Radio Future for the original Xbox, and there is a spiritual successor game called Bomb Rush Cyberfunk by indie studio Team Reptile
The modding community for Bomb Rush is just amazing, with multiplayer, insane movement mods, hundreds of character and map ports. There is even a server with around 1k users named Freesoul that has weekly events. (30-60 players on one map)
I loved this review! So many people are quick to complain about the controls but completely neglected how satisfying it feels to master them! I’m glad you pointed that out
I find your commentary on how the "more you got going on in your life, the less likely you are to play through a complex game with a complex story" insightful. To some degree, this is the truth. I find myself from time to time playing games as old as Nintendo games from the 8-bit era and just enjoying the simple to start and play dumb fun! I feel kind of sad that the days are gone when I could playthrough an entire Witcher game or an entire Arkham Knight game but I get it. Adult life is as complex as it is without more complexity added to games. And, while I love and respect these massive titles with massive worlds and lore, sometimes I just wanna load up a game and play right away without the loading screens, cutscenes, and complex quests with their own stories within the story. Sometimes I just want to play a fun game without too much gobbledygook.
I feel like games today lack soul. It feels so corporate and money grab-y. I feel like older games just have so much more passion and creativity. I recently started playing my favorite childhood game Ape Escape 3 again. It had a similar feeling. It was whimsical and goofy. The levels get harder because platforming is more involved or requires better jumps. There's also more to explore in the later levels. I noticed, for the first time in a while, I was actually having fun. The controls felt great, the music was fun, and I didn't have to do stupid battles that were hard only to be frustrating but rather hard because it required a culmination of all the skills from the game.
the algorithm did me justice. Jet set radio has a killer fanbase on twitter and the community is definetly alive with the spiritual modern successor bomb rush cyberfunk and potentially a new jet set coming in a couple years, ageless game!!
JSR is one of my all time favourite games, and I didn’t grow up with it either. Discovered the game through osmosis, like you, and since then, it has inspired my art style and taste in music tremendously 🤟 much love to the legend
Watching you try multiple times to land that grind up the ramp reminded me of someone learning how to do a trick foe the first time at a skate park and thats pretty fitting
im so glad you actually moved past the part of the controls being ass and learned that the game is good… even if you can’t play it! people really need to stop glazing future because it has better controls, both games are good, one is not better then each other
Im sort of the opposite now honestly. With how sheerly busy I've become with university placements and work and friends I really appreciate the long games, because they take me months to play, and I wont move on to a new game before finishing my current one. I got Elden Ring in February and am just now at the final boss 200 hours and 9 months later. I want to play all of these shorter games, but I never replay game so these long experiences work better for my mindset and for my wallet what with rent and transport and stuff.
Wow just finished this vid and I could not believe you had less than 100 subs. This is a super well written and presented video my dude, editing is well done as well. Definitely subbing, keep up the good work you’re good at this.
I just wish the mechanics lived up to the absolutely UNMATCHED aesthetic and art style/ direction. Compared to something like Tony hawks underground 2, it plays awful, but they really did open eyes to how cell shading could be used, their maps still look nice and play fantastic when modded into bong rush cyberfunk, and don’t even get me started on how fucking good that ost was. Shit was a great game, but it still had some issues
Also, play bomb rush cyberfunk, it’s like a spiritual successor to jet set radio, but it has actually good controls and a pretty active community. Very concise game, not much fluff.
AS SOON AS I SEEN THE TITLE AND THUMBNAIL I IMMEDIATELY HAVE TO AGREE, LIKE AND SUBSCRIBE!!! Edit: this was a great video and funny stuff! I'd also recommend Jet Set Radio Future which is a far better game and even fixes so many of the issues with this game, but it isn't on any modern platforms unfortunately. But i think generally, the kinda games you want that you can just jump in and play like you said are basically like the arcade style games in the style of what sega used to do- like this game for example. but also nice grind action going on at the end >:)
Love the video! JSR and JSRF were my childhood! Have you tried out Bomb Rush Cyberfunk? Highly recommended spiritual successor, they even have hideki naganuma on a couple of tracks (composed most of the JSR/JSRF songs)
1. What was the song in the outro? 2. I'm around the same age and I'm finding pretty similar experiences with the media I'm consuming. I haven't watched much anime in a very long time because of the pacing issues in a lot of them. And I completely relate to the dialogue skipping, just recently a friend of mine pointed out just how much dialogue I was skipping when I played persona 3 reload earlier this year.
Being a millenial is weird, witnessing and experiencing games evolving from Supermario to RDR2, the early 2000's games making huuuuuge leaps in quality. Not to bash on the games lately, but they're lacking in that "soul" more often than not. Or maybe we just grew up...
man now understands the concept of love

This was in my recommended for great reason- this is so well-made! Need more of this in my recommended, I had to subscribe 🤩
Even navigating the menus in old games was enjoyable, games now in general do lack soul

Maybe one day we'll all have time for both kinds of games :)

That's a fair point. I didn't think of it in that way

1. A jetset track titled "Bout the City"
2. I did the same thing with Reload tbh
