    This video alerted me to try to obtain a Ferrograph RTS2. I was able to find one in the U.K. They came out in the 70s but ultimate authenticity for this job.

      I concur. There are many meters that are more modern, accurate and efficient than this beast; but it's my preferred piece of test equipment for these decks. Thanks for your input, friend. Keep in touch.

    New subscriber here, great videos. Just got me one of these machines yesterday. Got the mechanics all sorted out and setup last night. Just some noise issues to troubleshoot on Ch3 and the VU bulbs on Ch1 and Ch2 are blown. Other than that, this machine is in great condition, no signs of wear on the heads. What's your recommendation for access to those VU bulbs?

    Hi Matt. Can I ask, how do I figure out which calibration tape to get? I have this machine and a tascam 388.

    It would be nice to know how to do this without that fancy meter... can you do it with a simple VTVM or VOM. My issue is I set things up for zero db tone input but the playback is way down. Shouldnt the recording playback at the same level you recorded at?

    Hi Bigg Matt,
    I have a question for you.
    I have tried twice now from two "different" brands (they were identical), to purchase NAB Hub adapters on Amazon. They are all the same design from China.
    They don't fit my brand new (NOS) TEAC 3340. I love the look with all that shiny aluminum but what the heck? When mounted on a 10.5 reel correctly they have expanded out just enough that the 3 spline reel table locking lug won't spin over the center and capture it. If I intentionally misalign the back tabs on the hub adapter so they push through a reel of tape I was able to lock the 3 spline shaft but now the hub itself is not locked on the reel of tape and all manner of fun could possibly happen at high wind speeds. Have you had luck with the Burlington or the expensive french REM versions? Or is there another solution? I have my little standard adapters for now.
    Thanks and love the channel!
    Best, Tod

    • @5thcomm
      @5thcomm  4 года назад +1

      Most of them need calibration to be brought back to spec. That said, if it records well enough for your application, skip calibration and enjoy it as is for as long as you can....then get it calibrated

    great video, I have intermittent audio out on my 3340, is there a relay of contacts that need to be deox'd? deck works most of the time, used to work all of the time but i left it unused for about a year....then this audio out issue...

    • @5thcomm
      @5thcomm  4 года назад

      Isolate where the issue is. Connect a source to the input and monitor the signal through the tape/source switch. Adjust the LINE IN inputs up/down individually and listen for static. Do the same as you're playing a tape while adjusting the outputs up/down. Lastly, record the input signal on all channels. Keep a log for each channel for all 3 steps and let me know the results. This will help identify the issue. Take care.

    thank you for this! I just got an 80-8 myself and I want to learn how to calibrate it. should I bias the machine before or after calibration?

    • @5thcomm
      @5thcomm  3 года назад

      Hi J K, If you're following the manual, the bias adjustment is performed after the playback calibration and prior to the record calibration. The 80-8 is a solid machine. What type of recordings are you planning to make?

    • @nintendoor1
      @nintendoor1 3 года назад +1

      @@5thcomm excellent! yeah, i’m planning on purchasing a calibration tape soon and i’ve never calibrated or biased one of these before. I make a lot of different music with various projects, indie rock, post punk, ambient and psychedelic music, but Im particularly fond of fuzzed out heavy rock. I’ve always been a fan bands like Mountain and Black Sabbath. I just love the sound and the process of tape recording. I also have a studio where I record other bands. I’ve recorded a few bands so far on my multi track cassette recorders with great results, so i’m excited to see how this machine works. I’d love to pick your brain about this machine. It’s hard to find people who really know the ins and outs of maintaining these and I would like to carry the knowledge forward

    Hi Bigg Matt, wondering if you could help me here- I cannot for the life of me find where the oil refill tubes are on the reel motors on the a3340s!!
    I can see them on the capstan motor but nowhere to be found on the reel motors? Are they even present on the 3340s? The service manual says yes but I’m at a loss!
    Any help much appreciated man. Cheers :))

    Good day Bigg Matt. I have quick question for my Teac 3340. I'm getting tape bleed (from older recordings), is there a way to adjust something so that the bleed goes away? Thx so much in advance!!!

    • @5thcomm
      @5thcomm  4 года назад

      Hi LY, A few questions: By bleeding, do you mean some tracks are heard on different channels? Were these tapes recorded on your 3340S? And do current recordings do the same thing?

    • @losyesterdays
      @losyesterdays 4 года назад

      @@5thcomm Thank for your reply: Not on different channels sir. It happens when I'm recording over an old drum take. Say I'm doing 1 and 3 of of stereo drums, upon play back or transfer over to my computer one can hear older drum takes I just recorded over on the same channels (1 and 3).
      Yes these tapes where using my 3340.
      Yes current recording seem to be bleeding more frequently. A friend mention "alignment of the erase heads, could be out" which is way beyond my grasp.
      Thank you kindly my man!

    • @5thcomm
      @5thcomm  4 года назад

      @@losyesterdays I agree with your friend. Take one of your old tapes and place the unit in record, with no input, LINE/MIC to minimum, OUTPUT to maximum and TAPE/SOURCE to TAPE You shouldn't hear anything as you're recording. If you do, make a small adjustment to the record head until you hear nothing.

    • @5thcomm
      @5thcomm  4 года назад +1

      Hey Kenny, you can do these steps with an oscillator and a multimeter, you'll also need a calibration tape. I think one of the other videos shows the head alignment, you'll need an oscilloscope for that procedure. It doesn't need to be an expensive one, as long as it is dual-trace - you can find them on craigslist for $100 or less. Take care
