  • QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA'S ETHAN EWING RIPPING PUNTA ROCA EL SALVADOR
Perhaps no surfer on tour fulfills the WSL's judging criteria of speed, power and flow better than Ethan Ewing.
Last year he had his best World Surf League performance, finishing 3rd on the CT after the regular season. In the finals at trestles Ewing defeated Griffin Colapinto before falling to champion Filipe Toledo to finish 2nd in the world. He has qualified for the 2024 Olympic Games and is currently rated number 4 on the 'CT looking solid for a finals day appearance. His surfing seems tailor made for the roping point surf of Punta Roca, El Salvador, and as usual he showed up early before the WCT Surf City El Salvador Pro to freesurf and psych up for the event.

Thanks for posting la Libertad. Brought back alot of memories when I was there in the 70's with no people. just us and 6' plus waves day after day.

This dude is the closest I’ve seen to AI and Curren style of surfing, REAL SURFING NOT JUST AIR ACROBATICS

    Why? Like Andy Irons. Similar.

      I see that for sure.

Nothing like Andy, Andy was unpredictable and attacked the wave with speed and wrecklass abandon and wasn't afraid to fall, he used parts of the wave that no one used.
Ethan is very measured and somewhat predictable their are elements of his style and body placement that are similar to Andy but Ethan is a much more safer and somewhat watered down version, great surfer.

@@jaycee571 I feel Ethan is completely focused on and molding his surfing for contests, yet Ethan does possess a lot of the aspect's of A.I. 's surfing that you mention here, but does rarely busts them out.

While his turns are unmatched, he has no airgame. Airgame = progression.
Without it, you are 1 dimensional, and that doesnt win contests.

He does amazing airs. Watch the El Salvador freesurf video I made from 2022, he does the craziest high speed slob grab revert and pulls it clean. Ewing is far from one dimensional. He rarely shows his strong air game I believe because the judging criteria generally rewards big carves over airs and he is concentrated on the judging criteria. Thay may change though with more performances like Yago Doras here in El Sal a couple weeks ago! Thanks for the comment and I can see how it would seem that way watching from a distance.
