Thank you man. I had this case for about a year. I held off on getting a Pi4 because I kept hoping the price would drop. Then stock became an issue. Finally got my hands on one today for 130 and decided to watch your video. Now all I need to do is wait for the power supply to come tomorrow and I'm rocking and rolling.
@@WagnersTechTalk Sorry to bother you. Hoping you may have a solution. I downloaded a preinstalled Pi Image some time ago. I never had problems with my Pi3 and this. Occasionally I would have to shrink an image. I used balenaEtcher as always and was presented with a boot loader screen. For a split second it says I need the latest firmware. I downloaded the piimager suggested in your video and followed the steps. Everything was updated and I thought, ok cool. I'm good to go. Grabbed the 128gb card and burned the image again and its the same boot screen. Any idea what I can do differently?
@@WagnersTechTalk Thanks. I did all that before you responded. I was actually able to get another image to work. The one I had was from 2019, so I am not sure if an updated Pi broke it's ability to run, but I'd really like to find out
Honestly, this is the BEST EVER TUTORIAL in the entire world, I gotta admit that this helps solve my issue because I thought I could use the USB 3.0 from the top half of the case and plug that into my PC to download games, but thanks to you I know what I need to do! (Thank the lords my friend has a SATA to USB 3.0 cable somewhere in his work backpack lol)
Wow, thank you for your kind comments! I appreciate you taking the time to comment and happy to hear it was helpful to you. That is always my goal, to show you something you might not have known before you watched it.
Had some trouble, restarted and followed these instructions to the letter. (I skipped a step initially - didn't format the SSD to fat32) Working just fine now. Thanks so much for the videos but also replying to my noob comments. Not many people on youtube do that!
I have the SNES case with the cartridge. I still talk to my wife about how much I love it. Retroflag makes great products. I really like their SNES controllers. It has turbo as well...just press the L-button+Select+(which ever button you want to have turbo). I've seen some reviewers mention how there is no turbo. I guess they never read the box lol.
@@WagnersTechTalk this case is nice but it has some MAJOR issues I wish you would make an update video on how to fix it I got the new v2 or maybe it is v2.5 ( since mine came with a fan but not the fancy heat sink fan combo yours has) I can not get ANY wireless anything to work with this case, no WIFI and no bluetooth apparently these cases all come with a cheap unshielded USB to SATA adapter that knocks out all wireless connectivity , I have seen at least one person using some shielding tape on the lid to correct the issue , I am wondering if tin foil could be used instead though also I can not get safe shutdown scripts to work at all in Batocera and this thing has really poor support, I requested invites to post in their official subreddit for this case 3 weeks ago , I have asked 2 times and I still received no response, they probably do not want people to see all the complaints on this thing I mean if the guy in the other video is correct it should be a super cheap fix, all they have to do is include some shielding tape and little card in the box that shows how to apply it or a QR code link to a section on their website that shows where to put it they should be sending out tape to people who bought this thing already too
@@WagnersTechTalk cool ,but the issue is said to persist on both the old and the new case if you are using the SSD ,have ever tried to boot from SSD and tried using WiFi at the same time? Did you experience any wifi issues? I will remove the top from mine and see if it will correct the problem and maybe experiment with tin foil shielding to see if I can solve it too
@@andreamitchell4758 Of course, even made a video about it here: ruclips.net/video/OrsRuXiIrm8/видео.html and a guide here: wagnerstechtalk.com/nespi4 . However, if it's something more prevalent with the "new" version of the case, I wouldn't know. See the bottom of the Troubleshooting section, I acknowledge that others have said there is an issue but did not experience it. Part of it may be the drivers for Recalbox/Batocera. I tested with RetroPie mostly.
Glad I can still find this... had to re-flash a new SD card with latest OS and reinstall from scratch due to password loss/unable to update. Q: does the GPIO have to be (enabled)? In raspi-config? Instructions are too vague. (Safe shutdown with button operation and LED operation has ceased after reinsatall) re-installing the setup script didn't help. Not using sata drive.
If you unplug the USB connection or connect the fan before connecting the USB 2.0 connection you can avoid any frustration when connecting the fan. Excellent video, I enjoy your videos very much, great presentation.
Brill video mate. i remember buying a nes new back in 1987 hard to beleave 33 years later were fitting tiny computers with hundreds more power into the nes case.... Tech has got proper tech i love it... Love that games cartridge with all the games on it. keeping it retro
Thank you so much for your kind words, I really appreciate it! It is amazing how technology has evolved over the years. Back in the day, I couldn't imagine having entire arcade machines fitting in my pocket or on my desk. Technology is so much fun!
Thanks for the video, it was very helpful. I'm setting up a Retropie for my sister but the instructions were missing but thankfully all of the parts were there. Your video made everything painless.
Thanks for the quick reply. I did re-enable the GPIO however I'm still having a problem... seams the USB2 DEV1 can't be enumerated on boot. As I understand this i may be an issue with some model 4B running Bookworm especially when a UART is involved
@WagnersTechTalk I will look this over tomorrow. I actually did preform a firmware update this evening. The same message is still present and operation hasn't changed. I did discover an un-install script I want to try, because the LED is staying on up until that python script runs. I have seen the convoluted output prior to log in. I think something is messed up and just needs removed I'm not sure from what file the call to the python script is being made. I tried to find it this evening but struck out.
@WagnersTechTalk a bit of research later I have discovered an issue with the GPIO library distributed with bookworm. Apparently they left out wait_on_edge() functionality. Looking for a way to install LGPIO instead.
Can you scale down the picture on larger HDTV's, instead of having a full 4:3 image? And what about CRT filters, scan lines and having the bars on the left and right of the screen black or using different wallpapers? Also worried about latency, but i guess that's inherent to emulation.
HD TV's are 16:9, but you can configure most distributions with bezels to fill in the black space, add scanlines, CRT filters, etc. Some distributions you may want to look at are Recalbox, Batocera and RetroPie. I have information on all 3 here: wagnerstechtalk.com/rpi4gaming
Great video! Yes please could you walk us thru the setup of SSD boot with Retropie. I really enjoy my NES-Pi case also. A few friends have seen it and want me to build a few for them also.
Thank you for your comment, wasn't sure if there was interest in seeing SSD boot. I do show how to boot from SSD in the Pi 400 tips video (here, if interested: ruclips.net/video/B1N3AxuCxbk/видео.html ). I've added it to my list of videos to create. Thank you for watching!
Not a retropie fan, had issues adding games. Just got this for my 5 yr old Grandson and loaded ssd with Recalbox reloaded. On first boot, it creates a partition-SHARE- readable by windows. Pull cartridge out, plug in sata to usb, plug into my pc for game rom transfer. So my Grandson will get a retro game for Christmas.
What an awesome gift, I'm sure your grandson will love it! I did make another video with this case and Recalbox using the Mayflash Dolphin bar. Not sure if you would be interested, but thought I'd share it incase you were: ruclips.net/video/uoldBGHVXKA/видео.html
@@WagnersTechTalk Thank you for your reply. Watched your link, awesome video. Is there a way to play Gamecube? My Daughter(mom) had a cube growing up and it would be great if they could play her favorite games together. I will be looking to add the light gun too.
Thank you Jeff, much appreciated! I have personally not tried Gamecube games in Recalbox but I think the Dolphin emulator (Wii and Gamecube) is included with Recalbox. You may need to copy over the GC bios files for it to work.
I'm sorry, I won't be much help with that. The only Arcade1UP I own is Star Wars and it's unmoded. You probably don't need this case for the RPi 4 in an A1up. Sometime ago, ETA Prime released a video of adding a Pi to a cabinet, here it is: ruclips.net/video/09DQCOr6zQM/видео.html Maybe that will give you some ideas.
u use the V2 of NASPi, i have the V3 200709 from the circuit board in 4:04 the position of the connector from the fan has changed, but still everything worked great. Not even in germany there is such a good tutorial .... respect
fantastic tutorial! Could you also make the video you talked about to boot from the SSD? It will be very helpful to boot from the SSD and having the games also on the same SSD!!
Thank you! I actually did make a video of this, however the case has been revised since this video and the section regarding updating the firmware doesn't apply anymore (from what I understand, don't have the newer model case). See here for more information: wagnerstechtalk.com/nespi4/#Booting_from_SSD
Great video thanks Wagner! You must have been reading my mind. Just got my first Rpi4 and the nespi case. Any chance you'd do a recalbox tutorial. I've hit a few snags and could really use a nice walkthrough for the setup we're both using but with recalbox instead of retropi. Thanks again and keep up the great work, it's very helpful and interesting stuff!
I love to see that. I keep wanting to try out RecalBox. I use Batocera and love it. But I'm curious about RecalBox. It does have some pluses over Batocera like the 2nd partition being readable in a windows machine. I think thats Recalbox anyway.
Thank you Seth! I've not yet made a video on recalbox. You are the first to ask, I've added it to my todo list for early 2021. I've covered Batocera, Lakka (briefly) & RetroPie but definitely need to do the same for recalbox. I appreciate your comment and will get to it soon.
Very welcome Nick! Since this video was released, I did create a few more videos that may also be helpful including how to boot directly from an SSD (without a microSD). You can find that video here (among others): wagnerstechtalk.com/nespi4/#Booting_from_SSD
I set my NESpi4 case exactly the way you laid out here (so not booting from SSD). What would your recommendations be on backing up the system since there are system files on both the SSD and SD card?
One method that I use is here: wagnerstechtalk.com/common/#Backup_Clone_a_Drive Basically, you'd shut the Pi down then make a backup image of the microSD and/or the SSD and copy that image off to a NAS/external drive. As this method created an image, the size of the resulting .img file will be the same size as the drive being backed up.
So I bought this and it's a bit different even though it claims to be the same case. Mine did not come with that crazy heatsink/fan combo. Just a little fan that is a real pain to get in the right spot. Second, my instructions didn't say anything about where to put the little metal wafer "heatsinks". Third, my USB ports are not white and blue. They're both white, which leads me to believe they're both only rated for USB2.0 even though one of them is plugged in to the USB3.0 port. The fan, on mine, connects to the top of the shell. Not the bottom. Did they just completely change how this works? Did I get some sort of knockoff version or something?
Hi Trevor, I'll be honest - I don't know the answer in this case (slight pun intended). Pretty sure that the USB ports are USB 2.0 only (if white only), which seems odd if this came from Retroflag that they would downgrade the USB ports to 2.0 only. I would check with wherever you ordered it from that it is what you think it is. It is entirely possible that they released some new version that I haven't heard about; could also be you have a knock-off. Sorry, I'm honestly not much help here.
@@WagnersTechTalk Yeah, something seems off about this. I tried flashing the SSD controller so I could boot from and SSD and the software didn't recognize the controller. I have a feeling this is some sort of knockoff. Luckily, it was ordered on Amazon so I'm going to return it and see if I can find one elsewhere.
I just received one from Amazon as well that is not the same either. I’m going to try to get in touch with Retroflag to see if this is a design change or not. Seems to be a lot cheaper build quality than the one in your video.
Haven’t heard back from Retroflag, I’m running out of time to return this so I’m going to return it and go a different way, too bad since this case seems really cool. Since Retroflag is unresponsive I’m guessing they did a cheaper design change and isn’t fessing up. From here on out I’m sticking with official RasPi parts through reputable companies.
Thank you! In that case, see my Pi4 tips video and instructions here : wagnerstechtalk.com/retropietips , you'll find one on adding new Emulators. While it shows Dreamcast, the same applies to the Amiga, etc. Hope that helps!
What problem are you running into? For Amiga instructions, you'll want to check out this page: retropie.org.uk/docs/Amiga , my link above shows you how to install the emulator (it's not pre-installed in RetroPie).
Yes, sorry I didn't see your last reply (YT blocks links and moves them to a separate location for review) as mentioned above here's a link with steps: wagnerstechtalk.com/retropietips/#Add_Emulators or scroll up for the full video.
How cool is that?! :) Man, i like the idea of using a cartridge as harddrive storage. Love to watch your channel Jon, always a great source for new, interesting stuff and professional techie guides!
Thank you my friend, Love your channel and always look forward to your next vid! The release today is VERY exciting news for the OpenDingux devices and much appreciate the information. Happy Holidays Sir!
Thanks for this video and your others. Is it possible to flash recalbox to an SSD drive, and set things up without a micro SD? Would love to have my roms and front end on the cartridge-encased SSD.
Very welcome! Yes, infact that is exactly what I did in this video: ruclips.net/video/c2cJQJHMMpY/видео.html No microSD was used, just direct install of Recalbox to the SSD. Also, please see this page which has all information I know consolidated there: wagnerstechtalk.com/nespi4/
I got this case and bought the Samsung T7 2TB External SSD. Is there any way to use this SSD with the “cartridge” case by disassembling it somehow? Or it strictly for internal SSD’s?? Thank you in advance!
Honestly don't know, typically you'll want to buy a 2.5" SSD and use that with the NESPi 4 case. There is no de-casing of the drive needed. I can't help much with your drive as I don't own one.
I downloaded a few games for a NES ROM, I can see that the games are in there, but when I cut on the nest P4 case and go to the NES emulator, I cannot find the games on the SD card
Assuming you're using RetroPie, power on your Raspberry Pi 4 then see the instructions here for copying the files to the rom share: wagnerstechtalk.com/rpi4gaming/#Installing_ROMs For NES, you'll copy all your [nes game name].zip files to \ etropie oms es (from a PC to your Pi4). Then Restart emulation Station and your games should show up (Start / Quit / Restart Emulation Station). Games won't show up in the list until you restart ES. Hope that helps!
Thank you Damian, happy you found this video useful! If you want a bit more information on this case, please visit my NESPi 4 page here: wagnerstechtalk.com/nespi4 I try to keep all my notes available to anyone that wants them, as well as troubleshooting info.
A symbol in the upper-right is likely due to thermal throttling, make sure the fan is connected properly and working. If not, reach out to RetroFlag. If the fan is working, then you shouldn't hit throttling. There is also a switch to keep the fans on all the time if you're not using any fan control scripts.
I'm confused. So, with this case are you no longer using the on-baord USB-C port for power? This case is awesome but I'm worried my Raspberry PI 4 won't fit. However, it looks like you're using the exact same one I have. Perhaps I missed something.
This case is only designed for the Raspberry Pi 4. I'm not sure what the confusion or concern is. Retroflag has made an updated version of the case that differs slightly from the one shown in this video. I don't have the newer version, so can't say what all is different just that I've been told the firmware update isn't necessary for the newer model.
Nice video but a bit frustrating that you didn't mention (or possibly remind us) that the SSD needs to be formatted to FAT32 around the 8 minutes mark. Had to rely on someone in these comments who also missed that step to confirm my suspicions
Thank you for this, i have just bought the raspberry 4, just waiting for my Nespi case to get to South Africa. So i take it we have retropie running on my 32g sd card and load games on my ssd drive. Is this correct?
Hi Gary, yes Sir that's correct. You can also have "everything" on your SSD if you prefer. I made a follow-up video here on what has worked well for me: ruclips.net/video/OrsRuXiIrm8/видео.html and a written guide (with video links) with even more info. that you may find helpful: wagnerstechtalk.com/nespi4/
Hi Rex, just wanted to mention I'll be releasing this page/video officially on Monday: wagnerstechtalk.com/nespi4/#Booting_from_SSD This will help you get the NESPi 4 case Booting from an SSD.
@@WagnersTechTalk ohh. I just got the Kingston 120gb and was going just write my current image to the SSD . That’s not how it works? There is something different? I’m looking at the site now.
@@therexershow You can, but you'll likely want to update the SSD Firmware (NO_UAS.bin), otherwise it will be very slow to boot. I was seeing 3min. boot time vs. 40 sec. with the update.
@@WagnersTechTalk oh man. I’ll def do the update. Even 40 secs is long. I have a “lite” image so maybe my boot will be a little faster. That’s another reason I love the mister. Power it on and 2 seconds later it’s ready to go.
Please .help. So i got my nespi 4 case. I have three sd cards with the following. Recalbox, Retropie & Blast16. Should i run the safe shut down script once or three times on each sd card?
Safe shutdown on RetroPie = Yes, Recalbox = No (it's built-in), Blast16 = Not sure, haven't used it. More here: wagnerstechtalk.com/nespi4/#Installing_Safe_Shutdown_Scripts Hope this helps!
Not sure about the HDD fitting into the case, I don't have one that will fit it so can't check into it at the moment. Might want to ask Retroflag on that one. Oh yeah, I recall hearing about the Galaga trick but I never tried it. May have to give it a shot (pun intended), might make for a fun distracting video too.
Planning it. Had a few new things come in that took priority (very cool Asteroids Replicade and RG351m). Definitely planning it though and haven't forgotten!
I didn't receive any in my kit, I assume it's for the USB/Ethernet Controller chips. If you're not sure which is which, this video will identify what chip is what: ruclips.net/video/n-4IxW9cgN4/видео.html . Hope that helps!
They came wid a kit i bought on Amazon. I used it on the USB chip. When I googled them I couldn't find ones with the pi logo but I did find identical ones without out and it had adhesive strip to peel. I've been using for a week and nothing's gone wrong plus my pi in case barley gets warm.
Have you tested a wireless controller with it yet? According to reviews on Amazon, people have said that wireless controllers (both Bluetooth and 2.4ghz) have had issues with it
@@WagnersTechTalk please do! Apparently the USB3 to Sata board has poor RF insulation and causes major interference with 2.4ghz, killing 2.4 ghz controllers and Bluetooth connections. An apparent workaround is moving the Sata USB to one of the 2.0 ports but that isn't a great solution
My apology for the delay but I didn't forget about you nor your questions! Here's an unlisted video where I use an 8BitDo N30 Pro 2 wireless Gamepad with the NESPi4. Please let me know when you've seen the video and I'll delete it: ruclips.net/video/_5jNaCakwbg/видео.html btw- I didn't show it but the games are all running off the SATA drive, just like what was shown in the main video here.
If you place aluminum foil over the top part of the case where the wires are exposed as well as over the top of the connector on the base part of the case it will restore bluetooth range. Before i did that i only had 2ft range.
This might be a dumb question but could I just use a sata 3 port to do this instead of the usb to sata 3 adapter? Or is windows gonna want to mess with it and format it.
Good question, my primary computer is a laptop which doesn't have an external enclosure, so it's what I used. Just make sure that when you're running Pi Imager that you select the correct drive and see.
Thank you Mario! I've already sent an e-mail to Retroflag in preparation for SSD boot to make sure I use their recommended method (they do have some files on their website to flash the firmware). But, want to make sure what I say is in-line with what they recommend. Also, picked up a 1TB SSD for this upcoming video. Definitely going to happen, when I can't say exactly but once I'm confident that I'm showing the recommended and correct way. Thank you for watching!
Hi Mario, I've tried two different SSD's to write up some instructions on SSD boot and both have worked fine. Was wondering if you'd be interested in beta testing those instructions to see if they work as well for you? Here's the link if so: wagnerstechtalk.com/nespi4
@@WagnersTechTalk yeah SSD boots , mine worked the first try and a pre made Batocera image ,free 240gb inland drive from microcenter BUT with one MAJOR one caveat , if you use the USB to SATA and an SSD you get no wifi or bluetooth
I got my PI 4 but can decide to get a case with USB or this case with SSD. I don’t have an SSD. Think USB might be a cheaper option, which case do you recommend for that? I ask because this one takes SSD. Thanks
Really depends on your preference. SSD's are faster, but for Retro Gaming using just a microSD is perfectly fine (this case can use a microSD or an SSD). I'll have a video in an hour or so of a new Raspberry Pi 4 case that looks like a Playstation (no SSD but microSD). Might want to wait and see if you like this new case better.
@@WagnersTechTalk thanks so much for responding back to me. 😊 you just got a follower. I saw the PlayStation video looks great but I’ve always been a fan of nes and Snes consoles. That can be hooked up with the pi 4. Thanks!
@@InvestwithKhan Great news, happy to help! Not sure if you saw this already, but I have a Guide page for the NESPi 4 case here: wagnerstechtalk.com/nespi4 . After it was booted, I added the "usb-storage.quirks=152D:0562:u" to the end of "/boot/cmdline.txt" for good measure. I am very curious about "Method 2" approach that you used though. Is the firmware install an update for the USB-to-SSD board, and if so how does the system know to look at for the firmware update on the SSD?
I can't figure out if the Batocera safe shutdown script is working or not , I asked for an e-vite to be able to post in the subreddit and 3 weeks later I get no response after asking twice I don't think safe shut down is working but I have never been able to find anyone using this case with Batocera that has shown what it is supposed to do and look like when you press power or reset when I press it all I see is a black screen, not sure if that is normal or not I am not sure if it should look like it does with retropie where it has lots of text whizzing by as it shuts down or if the black screen is normal, also I am booting from the SSD if someone could just simply make a short video of the safe shutdown script in action for Batocera it would be a big help ,maybe a video showcasing the safe shutdown script in a bunch of different OS's on this thing that would be a good video to make

When I load RetroPie onto a 120 GB SSD using Raspberry Pi Imager (from a Windows 10 PC) the disk boots and works fine, but the disk size shrinks to only 256 MB! Yes, megabytes, not gigabytes. How can I fix this?
There is more than one partition that gets created (what you're seeing is only the boot partition), though in Windows 10 you won't be able to see the 2nd partition unless you use a tool like Disk Genius. See the Grey Box here: wagnerstechtalk.com/common/#Expand_a_Partition . Keep in mind, you don't need to expand the partition (RetroPie does this for you automatically), however if you want to see the contents of the partition under Windows this tool will allow you to do that. You don't have to register for the app. to browse the contents, but you will if you want to copy files to the drive directly. But, you can use a network file copy or USB to avoid having to register for the full version of Disk Genius. More on that here: wagnerstechtalk.com/rpi4gaming/#Installing_ROMs
In a recent video I used PINN Lite to install several operating systems to a single SSD. Are you trying to install Konstakang's Android 11 TV? If so, I don't have a video for that at this time.
Have you ever tried removing the cartridge after installing it for the first time? I just installed mine. The SATA ports feels really snug and now I can't remove the cartridge. Tried dismantling the inner compartment that holds the thing but stopped halfway as it was too hard and I didn't wanna risk breaking anything. Any tips?
Sure, I've tried removing the cart both 3d-printed, the one that came with it as well as x2 extra carts from RetroFlag (Gray & Gold). Sounds like there may be some plastics either on the cart or inside the slot that are getting in the way somewhere. It should go in smoothly.

I am using the wolfanoz 128 gold GB image on a 240 GB inland SSD the image booted fine the first time from the SSD but I just bought my case and I assume it has the firmware for the USB to SATA adapter pre updated , I was going to ask you if you have had any luck with getting safe shutdown scripts to work ,and is that image Batocera? I can not get safe shutdown scripts to work on mine with the 128gb Batocera image ,my internal switch is set to on and I have uncommented out the line in the Batocera.conf file like it says to do in the thread for the image on backups dot me , do you know if he has preinstalled the scipts for safe shutdown or if he just has included the line in the (commented out) Batocera.conf file ? do I need to go to the retroflag nes pi 4 case github and follow those instructions and dot eh w get command and install the actual scripts or does he already do that with his images? and do safe shutdown scripts even work when booting from the USB to SATA SSD? and do you need to change anything if you are using an SSD as primary boot as opposed to an SD card? and one last thing , have you experiences any WIFI or bluetooth issues if you have got SSD booting working? I can not get WIFI to work , it worked like twice, but I have read this case has a cheap unshielded USB to SATA adapter that borks all wireless connectivity , I still have not tried to pair a bluetooth controller yet though, but WIFI is basically non existent
Perhaps if connected via USB externally but not in the cartridge port, no. You'll need a SATA III 2.5" SSD like the ones mentioned here: wagnerstechtalk.com/nespi4/#Speed_Tests
Looks nice, and easy to install. I might buy it for my Pi :) When I do buy it, I definitely will use this video! But one thing: I find the ethernet coloring scheme weird. Why is there yellow and black? Why didn't they follow one of the standards? Or is that not Cat5, but something else?
Awesome, thank you for watching! Not sure why they didn't use the standard orange, blue, green, brown pairs for their Ethernet adapter. Not to speak for them, but if I were to guess, it's due to the very short distance and it's simply a custom adapter. It's only for longer distances where the twists in the wire will actually matter and of course the color doesn't matter from any technical aspect.
There needs to be a warning attached here, the SATA to USB adapter this case uses has many issues, and causes some SSDs to not work at all. Retroflag needs to replace this adapter in the units.
@@WagnersTechTalk I am having the problem myself, redit thread where I explain my problem www.reddit.com/r/RetroFlag/comments/kuqscr/cant_use_sdd_on_pi4_case/ This leads to a released fix from Retroflag themselves retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/27998/booting-from-ssd-on-pi-4/11 This talks about the issue ruclips.net/video/zLrMPa9jcpM/видео.html&ab_channel=Kio%C3%90%C3%8E%C3%8AK%C3%8E%C3%91 Seems the main problem is that the SATA to usb controller they are using is not compatable with UAS, so some drives run slow, or not at all.
Thank you for this information, I'll check into it myself. Appreciate you taking the time to reply back with some details! I'm planning a future follow-up to discuss booting from the SSD so this fits well into that (potential) future video.

@@Bhoyo77 Still planning on it, just haven't started yet. Had some new stuff come in that took priority. Got 2 more, then on to digging into an SSD boot video.
** UPDATE ** Thanks to the assistance of RetroFlag, I was able to get the SSD to boot without a microSD card. Instructions & video may be found here: wagnerstechtalk.com/nespi4 and Video to step you through it here as well: ruclips.net/video/OrsRuXiIrm8/видео.html
Just wanted to stop by and say thanks. Your video made the installation process very easy to follow.
Very kind of you to say, glad I could be of assistance and thank you!
Very welcome, hope the video and guide (here wagnerstechtalk.com/nespi4/ ) help make the setup a breeze for you. Thanks for watching!
Please see this guide regarding updating your Pi: www.raspberrypi.com/documentation/computers/os.html
(I skipped a step initially - didn't format the SSD to fat32)
Working just fine now. Thanks so much for the videos but also replying to my noob comments. Not many people on youtube do that!
Awesome, so happy you're up and running! I like helping as much as I can, I appreciate your kind feedback!
Your voice is soothing, perfect for these kind of video tutorials. Very well done. Thanks!
Thank you! 😊
Thanks for sharing and watching! I have the SUPER Pi case from a few years ago and love it, Retroflag makes some awesome products!
@@WagnersTechTalk this case is nice but it has some MAJOR issues
I wish you would make an update video on how to fix it
I got the new v2 or maybe it is v2.5 ( since mine came with a fan but not the fancy heat sink fan combo yours has)
I can not get ANY wireless anything to work with this case, no WIFI and no bluetooth
apparently these cases all come with a cheap unshielded USB to SATA adapter that knocks out all wireless connectivity , I have seen at least one person using some shielding tape on the lid to correct the issue , I am wondering if tin foil could be used instead though
also I can not get safe shutdown scripts to work at all in Batocera
and this thing has really poor support, I requested invites to post in their official subreddit for this case 3 weeks ago , I have asked 2 times and I still received no response, they probably do not want people to see all the complaints on this thing
I mean if the guy in the other video is correct it should be a super cheap fix, all they have to do is include some shielding tape and little card in the box that shows how to apply it or a QR code link to a section on their website that shows where to put it
they should be sending out tape to people who bought this thing already too
@@andreamitchell4758 Of course, I can only review what I have. I'll reach out to RetroFlag and ask them about these issues. I appreciate the feedback!
GPIO should be enabled, unless they were manually disabled. Those lines are used by the NESPi 4 case.
If you unplug the USB connection or connect the fan before connecting the USB 2.0 connection you can avoid any frustration when connecting the fan. Excellent video, I enjoy your videos very much, great presentation.
Great tip, thank you! I honestly didn't think about that 😊 Thank you so much for watching and your kind comments!
This was a fantastic tutorial. Very easy to follow, straight to the point and everything was clearly explained. A+++
Thank you for your kind words, happy you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the video, it was very helpful. I'm setting up a Retropie for my sister but the instructions were missing but thankfully all of the parts were there. Your video made everything painless.
Awesome, glad I could help! If you need any further info., hopefully I've covered everything here as well: wagnerstechtalk.com/nespi4
Thanks for the quick reply. I did re-enable the GPIO however I'm still having a problem... seams the USB2 DEV1 can't be enumerated on boot. As I understand this i may be an issue with some model 4B running Bookworm especially when a UART is involved
You might need to update the fw on the Pi4, this link has some good info: all3dp.com/2/raspberry-pi-4-firmware-update-tutorial/
This was an exellent walkthrough! Thank you very much!👌👍
You're very welcome!
I'm trying to use this case for my arcade1up build. Any idea how to connect the stock toggle power and volume switch to the nespi case/raspberry pi 4?
I'm sorry, I won't be much help with that. The only Arcade1UP I own is Star Wars and it's unmoded. You probably don't need this case for the RPi 4 in an A1up. Sometime ago, ETA Prime released a video of adding a Pi to a cabinet, here it is: ruclips.net/video/09DQCOr6zQM/видео.html Maybe that will give you some ideas.

fantastic tutorial!
@@WagnersTechTalk thank you! Continue like that!
@@WagnersTechTalk thanks really excited to see it! Happy to help the channel in any small way that I can. 👍
Definitely going to pick this up, I have plenty of 2.5 HDDs in the meantime before I get an SDD for it. Just to keep the cost down.
Thank you so much~ I`m watching from s.korea. It was a great help for me~ Thanks again~!
One method that I use is here: wagnerstechtalk.com/common/#Backup_Clone_a_Drive
Basically, you'd shut the Pi down then make a backup image of the microSD and/or the SSD and copy that image off to a NAS/external drive.
Thank you so much it was brilliant but what if I want to add Amiga ? Dragon 32..etc..

This case can cause the yellow symbol to appear in the top right as it seems to drain more power than normal from the PSU.
A symbol in the upper-right is likely due to thermal throttling, make sure the fan is connected properly and working. If not, reach out to RetroFlag. If the fan is working, then you shouldn't hit throttling. There is also a switch to keep the fans on all the time if you're not using any fan control scripts.
If I don't have a SATA to USB adapter can I just use the USB on top half of the lid to connect the SSD to my PC?
Yes, you can.
@@WagnersTechTalk Thanks for the swift reply. Subscribed.
I've never had a Pi or used RetroPie, how do you do a safe shutdown for the first time before you install the shutdown script?
Just click the Start button on the controller, move down to Quit/Shutdown.
I did show it on-screen but yes it was briefly. My apology for that.
Thank you for this, i have just bought the raspberry 4, just waiting for my Nespi case to get to South Africa. So i take it we have retropie running on my 32g sd card and load games on my ssd drive. Is this correct?

Oh yeah, I recall hearing about the Galaga trick but I never tried it. May have to give it a shot (pun intended), might make for a fun distracting video too.
Hi are you going to do a Retropie Raspberry Pi 4 NESPi 4 Case boot from ssd setup video?
Planning it. Had a few new things come in that took priority (very cool Asteroids Replicade and RG351m). Definitely planning it though and haven't forgotten!
Is there a carry case and monitor for this raspberry pi Nintendo case?
No, I wish there was. The only thing close is this ruclips.net/video/BB7PH5JbRrI/видео.html
Fantastic walkthrough. Thank you! And I subscribed
Welcome aboard!
Like to see how to set up retropi on cartridge
I got 2 gold tops with the pi logo. Are they supposed to be mini heat sinks?
I didn't receive any in my kit, I assume it's for the USB/Ethernet Controller chips. If you're not sure which is which, this video will identify what chip is what: ruclips.net/video/n-4IxW9cgN4/видео.html . Hope that helps!
They came wid a kit i bought on Amazon. I used it on the USB chip. When I googled them I couldn't find ones with the pi logo but I did find identical ones without out and it had adhesive strip to peel. I've been using for a week and nothing's gone wrong plus my pi in case barley gets warm.
How well does it handle cooling, particularly while overclocked?
Haven't had any cooling issues thus far. I plan on stress testing it more with TwisterOS soon.
Have you tested a wireless controller with it yet? According to reviews on Amazon, people have said that wireless controllers (both Bluetooth and 2.4ghz) have had issues with it
I've only tried it with the wired controller shown in the video. I'll check it out in the next couple days and report back.
Please let me know when you've seen the video and I'll delete it: ruclips.net/video/_5jNaCakwbg/видео.html
btw- I didn't show it but the games are all running off the SATA drive, just like what was shown in the main video here.
If you place aluminum foil over the top part of the case where the wires are exposed as well as over the top of the connector on the base part of the case it will restore bluetooth range. Before i did that i only had 2ft range.
Is possible make this case 2,5 X bigger or not?
No, don't think so
This might be a dumb question but could I just use a sata 3 port to do this instead of the usb to sata 3 adapter? Or is windows gonna want to mess with it and format it.
Good question, my primary computer is a laptop which doesn't have an external enclosure, so it's what I used. Just make sure that when you're running Pi Imager that you select the correct drive and see.
Great video! Helped me set up my nespi4. And yes please on setting up retro pi to boot from the ssd
@@WagnersTechTalk yeah SSD boots , mine worked the first try and a pre made Batocera image ,free 240gb inland drive from microcenter
BUT with one MAJOR one caveat , if you use the USB to SATA and an SSD you get no wifi or bluetooth
did you ever make a video on how to boot from the SATA SSD? maybe i should look.... LOL
I did and much more here wagnerstechtalk.com/nespi4/
Also I didn’t realize that came with SSD and a usb. That might just be the winner thanks again for help.
Also I would love to know if you have any recommendations for a wireless controller. That can be hooked up with the pi 4.
Thanks!
I see the blue tooth controller please disregard that question.
@@InvestwithKhan Great news, happy to help! Not sure if you saw this already, but I have a Guide page for the NESPi 4 case here: wagnerstechtalk.com/nespi4 . Just incase you need any additional information and recommendations on SSD's that I've tried, cartridge shells, etc. The case does come with one shell for the SSD, not something needed right away.
@@WagnersTechTalk yes I saw that on the video will definitely be referring to that. I just ordered it and I’m hoping the SD card is enough to work with. Perhaps later on I’ll use the SSD card. Thanks again and yeah will keep you updated! :)
Mine does not have a big heat sink. There are 4 small ones and a seperate fan that clips onto the vents
Interesting, thank you for letting me know. Perhaps they re-designed the fan assembly or having part shortages.
@@WagnersTechTalk I contacted retroflag. Their response was concise and devoid of explanation. It simply stated the unit was indeed original not a knock off did not include the heat/sink&fan asy. And both usb ports in front were 2.0 not 3.0

@@WagnersTechTalk This is going to sound crazy, but after I cloned my SD card to my Kingston SSD, it booted of the SSD (no SD card inserted).
I can't figure out if the Batocera safe shutdown script is working or not ,
I asked for an e-vite to be able to post in the subreddit and 3 weeks later I get no response after asking twice
I don't think safe shut down is working but I have never been able to find anyone using this case with Batocera that has shown what it is supposed to do and look like when you press power or reset
when I press it all I see is a black screen, not sure if that is normal or not
I am not sure if it should look like it does with retropie where it has lots of text whizzing by as it shuts down or if the black screen is normal, also I am booting from the SSD
if someone could just simply make a short video of the safe shutdown script in action for Batocera it would be a big help ,maybe a video showcasing the safe shutdown script in a bunch of different OS's on this thing
that would be a good video to make
You may want to try the Batocera forums here as well: forum.batocera.org , many of the devs monitor the forums and may have some better info. for you.
@@WagnersTechTalk yeah I have tried but nothing so far
tech people are just too autistic to know how to communicate, we need that Ton Smykowski guy from office space , he was right , the software guys are just not good at talking to people
not a single video has ever shown a demonstration of the safe shutdown in action and not a single video has even shown a shutdown from the menu either
I don't think either one are working properly but of course I have no way to really tell because I have no clue what it is supposed to looks like
I have only ever seen it on retropie and 99% of those videos showing you hoe to enable it end the video before even showing it in action , makes zero sense,
they should end the video showing it and what it does and what you see on the screen or even better yet start with that and then explain how to set it up

Can you help where's the best and safest place to download the game roms ?
I want to flash Android 11 tv directly to an SSD in this case. Do you have a video showing how to flash directly to SSD?
It should go in smoothly.
does the kit have the option for the raspi 4 8gb ram?
Not that I'm aware of, you can get the case (only) and the 8GB Pi4 separately. But not seeing it bundled.
This was excellent, thank you!

Double triple checked and not my first build but the on led wont turn on
Sounds like you might have a defective unit, you could get a replacement from Amazon or contact retroflag support. Is it just the led that doesn't come on or does the unit not boot at all? Hi there
I have issues with booting image on raspberry pi 4 (wolfanoz image 1tb)
With SSD (Kingston 960 g)
I did the steps and commands literally!
sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
sudo rpi-update
sudo reboot
sudo apt install rpi-eeprom
sudo nano /etc/default/rpi-eeprom-update
replace critical by beta
crtl-x and Y
sudo rpi-eeprom-update -d -f
sudo rpi-eeprom-update -d -f /lib/firmware/raspberrypi/bootloader/beta/pieeprom-2020-05-15.bin
But still can't boot from USB
What's your best advise?
What should I do?
Is there something missing?

@@WagnersTechTalk how can I do factory reset for Raspberry Pi 4 ?
I am using the wolfanoz 128 gold GB image on a 240 GB inland SSD
the image booted fine the first time from the SSD but I just bought my case and I assume it has the firmware for the USB to SATA adapter pre updated , I was going to ask you if you have had any luck with getting safe shutdown scripts to work ,and is that image Batocera? I can not get safe shutdown scripts to work on mine with the 128gb Batocera image ,my internal switch is set to on
and I have uncommented out the line in the Batocera.conf file like it says to do in the thread for the image on backups dot me , do you know if he has preinstalled the scipts for safe shutdown or if he just has included the line in the (commented out) Batocera.conf file ?
do I need to go to the retroflag nes pi 4 case github and follow those instructions and dot eh w get command and install the actual scripts or does he already do that with his images?
and do safe shutdown scripts even work when booting from the USB to SATA SSD?
and do you need to change anything if you are using an SSD as primary boot as opposed to an SD card?
and one last thing , have you experiences any WIFI or bluetooth issues if you have got SSD booting working? I can not get WIFI to work , it worked like twice, but I have read this case has a cheap unshielded USB to SATA adapter that borks all wireless connectivity , I still have not tried to pair a bluetooth controller yet though, but WIFI is basically non existent
Can I use the Samsung t7 with this?
Perhaps if connected via USB externally but not in the cartridge port, no. You'll need a SATA III 2.5" SSD like the ones mentioned here: wagnerstechtalk.com/nespi4/#Speed_Tests
@@WagnersTechTalk thanks
I didn't have any issues with the SSD I tried but if you have a link from a trusty source demonstrating such issues, I'll consider adding one.
