I am playing this right now and am about halfway through. I love survival horror games, and this is proving to be one of the best! It is very similar to Darkfall, which I played several years ago.
He gave an in depth view of the game, a nearly complete analysis. That takes time, and apparently you do not have the patients to listen for more than a few minutes.
This is such a good review ! Sir you are very talented and honestly i think ( if you have time ) you should do more reviews ! I'm a huge fan of the survival horror games and played the original Alone in the Dark when it first came out and i loved how you explained everything and connected the dots and showed the evolution in the genre :)
I bought this game and another two from the same franchise, today. Thank you for your excellent review. Very detailed. Helped me with deciding on my purchase. Cheers.
You sir, are an awesome reviewer! thank you for elevating game reviews to a whole new level, looking forward to more reviews from you. Really like the genres and types of games you review as well. Would love to know what you think of other classic titles as well such as "The Legacy Realm of Terror" developed by Magnetic Scrolls and published by Microprose in 1993.
I have gained so much respect for games just due to this review. You are absolutely amazing and not only telling the history but weaving in a review as well as TRULY capturing the psychology behind players actions. Subed. Liked. Favorited. Not sure what else I can do but damn you deserve so much more attention. So high quality.
Yeah I downloaded one of his reviews like 12 years ago and always watched it throughout the year on my hard drive randomly when I’d find the file. Then I had to come back to this channel and rewatch his reviews I never saw, but it sucks he didn’t keep on with this because he did some great work, and it looks like he was still uploading stuff up to a year ago.
Wow, you are really good at reviewing. I really enjoyed this, it sounds like you actually have some experience with literary analysis and found a way to apply it to other works, something I have rarely seen in game reviews. Keep up the good work.
I don't like the survival horror genre, but I enjoyed watching this because of the appreciation for immersion in entertainment that I share with the game and the reviewer.
Pity you've never reviewed Black Plague, I would have loved to hear your thoughts on it. :-) As well as on later FG titles. You can also throw objects without swinging, by holding down the other mouse button while holding an object and then letting it go. (IIRC, the longer you hold it, the farther you throw the object away.) But yeah, holding an object, swinging it and letting it go is perfectly possible for throwing stuff at short distances.
his game is terrifying and it deserves all the praise that it gets, I personally find penumbra the black plague to be the scarier of the two though, mostly because while in the first game you could fight with the hammer among other things in the second game, you cant, theres no defense mechanics, just you running and hiding, THATS how I like it, also ever since I played Amnesia and Outlast I find any game trying to be a horror game just isnt one unless its first person because like you said in the video it offers a higher level of immersion and connection between the player and the game world, but also the fact that in the first person perspective I have to do certain things that would put me in danger like looking around corners to see if I'm safe to go on while in third person I can just get close but not right next to the corner and then turn the camera to look around, I abuse whatever perspective I'm given in a game if it will make my journey easier, sure I enjoy a difficult experience but I'm not going to cut a game slack and deliberately not do what I usually do just to make the game scary, as such the Silent Hill series is one that doesnt scare me AT ALL because it takes the third person perspective which breaks my immersion and since I can abuse the third person perspective to basically nerf any fright the game tried to induce it wont scare me ever, P.T. that recently came out on the PS4 which was a playable teaser of Silent Hills which apparently is Silent Hill but took a first person perspective, P.T. didnt scare me at all past a few small jumpscares that didnt phase me too much either, but its a step in the right direction if they plan to make Silent Hills in the first person perspective and perhaps the new game will actually scare me
This Sir, is the best review I have ever seen. I finished Amnesia 6am this morning, and am more than hungry for more! So just bought the Penumbra collection and downloading it as im typing this, I was hesitant at first, but after hearing your review and seeing these images my doubt was gone So thank you friend
Absolutely outstanding review! I wish IGN and Gamespot got this in-depth, and more importantly, took the time to review these indie games that can't make it to center stage simply for their lack of advertising dollar. Keep up the good work!
Very good review. The background information and comparisons are something you won't find in most "professional" reviews, these days. Highly appreciated! On a side note: You *REALLY* should play "Penumbra: Black Plague"! I was very amazed by how they managed to improve on the gameplay experience. This sequel should not be missed! "Requiem", on the other hand, rather seems to have been an environmentally related experiment. Like built with a Penumbra construction set, without plot.
This video has quite strafed away from it's original title (the Penumbra review kind of dissolves in other information) but I have to admit this is a very well prepared and thought through material. I like the amount of insight you've put into analysis of various games and their evolution. All in all great work!
Is this game better then Amnesia? Yes. Graphics are shitty but that's what I like about the game, it really does add to the atmosphere and makes you feel lonely in fear.
True! Got it. There's all kinds of fun to be added to almost any title with self-restrictive playing. It's almost like another layer of role-playing within a game that already has you playing a role...
Excellent review of the game and overview of the links between the survival horror genre with the adventure game genre, it was interesting to watch for sure. I found the atmosphere of Overture to be brilliant, and most of the time it was my own paranoia fueling my fear more than the actual threats. I left a line of barricades a mile long on my path. :P I do recommend you at least play Black Plague at some point, as it has to be at least twice as scary as Overture. Which is saying a lot.
Really amazing review. You pretty much touch the spot. Except you didn't mention Red and it's importance in completing the ambience with demency. You should make a review from Black Plague tho, considering it already has many considerable improvements on FG's game making, immersion, logic, spookyness and other abilities. I loved this title with all my heart, but I still have enjoyed BP much more.
@worIdcitizen Just drag an item into the numbered slots at the top of your inventory screen. Hitting the corresponding number on your keyboard will allow you to "quick-draw" or use any of your items.
@taylord359 The real name of Resident Evil is BioHazard. The US version was named RE as a way to avoid copywrite issues. This name of the English version lead to a fracturing of understanding about the game itself. Many think it is a Zombie Game, when in fact it is about a biological outbreak from a test lab, creating monsters NOT zombies... hence the title biohazard. Biohazard is the "real" and original name of the game, and Resident Evil is the worng and miss leading name.
Brilliant review, you voice is wonderful :) All the minor problems you mentioned were the ones they fixed in amnesia, which is the only reason I regard it as better than this one. They also completely eliminated the option to fight your way through the game, showing how right you were about them wanting you to be stealthy. Wonderful game and wonderful review. I look forward to watching more!
the thing that i really loved and mostly appreciated about this review was his definition of fear. its easy to "scare" someone, you just make it really quiet and then add in a sudden loud noise (hell, that happens to me when i turn on my ipod after forgetting how loud i left it earlier). but to truly give someone "fear", thats an art form. the same goes with movies. thats why games and movies like penumbra and paranormal activity are "frightening" and slashers are just "fun".
@videogamediary Oh, but Requiem does feature some story elements of Penumbra and BP. Unfortunately, it has too few of them and they are not related to the gameplay. The riddles were nice for a game of that type, but without a plot to move along there was really no motivation. Amnesia: There is a new gameplay video released on the frictionalgames channel. It says 8th of September.
Thank you for this brilliant review. U are truly a very special reviewer with your own exciting way of explaining things. Very interesting game too, thank you for taking your time and give us brief look at the masterpiece :D
got this from the humble indie bundle too... it was really scary at first, but I usually engage the wolves so they just get annoying after a while. Really scary game though, when you are actually progressing and not running around trying to find an item / code x.x
You did an excellent review for an excellent game! I agree with you 100% with everything you stated in this review. First thing I noticed with Penumbra, was how scary, yet addicting it was. It made my blood run cold the first time through, I had to pause, but I still craved more. I'm looking forward to Amnesia, and no doubt you are as well. =D Again, great review, and good job setting Penumbra aside from other adventure games.
Great video !!! U sound like u really liked the game so could u tell me Wich is better that one or the black plague ? And u should do a review on amnesia I would love to hear what u have so say about it
the physics of this game is better than amnesia's. but i hate how they ended it in cliffhanger . Mostly focusing on red's story than the protagonist himself. Nonetheless looking forward to penumbra black plague
Oh, also, you've probably heard, but the clunky combat was removed entirely from Black Plague. You can still use your environment to fight enemies but it's nigh impossible to actually defeat them, more just as a delaying tactic. It's awesome. :)
Fantastic review, loved your small detour into the history of the subgenre. Yes, as far as atmosphere goes, this game is like a true horror (say, The Others) compared to a run-of-the mill slasher movie. This game series is truely scary and is true survivor horror - you're just a believable, down-to-earth, average Joe here, no muscle-bound pretty boy with a shotgun shooting supposedly scary undeads...
An excelent review to an even better game! Can you list all the other games mentioned in the review? What was the game at 4:41 (after Monkey Island II).
@rowdyroo1 nope, it was more like description of the game type, and a bit detailed the game, real reviews are " what you can do, what's the main thing in it , story line, what kinda character you are playing with and who he is detailed, etc"
@skaruts I try not to give away to much in the reviews.. witch is why I do not mention Red... Also at this time I am trying to avoid squeals as there are lots and lots of games I wish to do as first
Penumbra: Overture was truly fantastic. I need to get back to playing Black Plague sometime, I've heard it's even better. I can't wait for their next game Amnesia: The Dark Descent, the trailer they have for it is insane.
I saw this game on sale on steam a few months back and thought about getting it but passed. I'm hating that decision now, as it looks to be a GREAT game! I will definitely have to check it out.
Yes, I think so. This game came before Amnesia. In essence, both games run on the same engine from the way I experienced playing both the Penumbra franchise and Amnesia.
@tado05pro Bio Hazard is the real name of resident evil. It is only called Resident Evil in the English release witch is always, by tradition, released after the original Japanese version
@JholmanGames I now know the developers themselves have there own online store @ frictionalgames I would recommend purchasing it form there and send a few more bucks to the developers themselves and cut out the middle man!! Also there new game is about to come out.. I have high hopes for it!
This came as a bonus in the humble indie bundle 2 which I recently purchased, I'm so happy to have gotten this game but after watching this I'm not sure if it's my cup of tea. I don't really like scary games. I'll try it though, I never knock a game down before I try it.
@keeshond5 Theyre both made by frictional games, so they have similar game engines and mechanics, although despite that the 2 games are very different. :D
Yes, in-fact the very first time I ever played the game was at my friends house for a sleep over. It didn't feel all that scary considering the fact that 7 people were over but we were in our friends basement with the lights turned off. I do admit that yes when we got to the next game which was black plague I started shitting myself "Excuse my cussing". However after soloing the game it doesn't feel all that scary knowing where all the dogs are and what is going to happen next..
@Kijinn Black Plague is a must play with out a doubt.. it is hard to believe they improved it so much.. but they did. Requiem is more like a MOD. The core focus of the game is puzzles. I liked requiem, As long as you realize that it is not really related to Penumbra or BP at all and only uses the engine.. then you should be fine. Anyway Amnesia demo slices have made there way to reviewers, so it shouldn't be long till we have the true successor to the Penumbra series... YAY!!!!
@MrHables I have played amnesia . it's amazing, because it's scary yeah. and you can't kill the monsters in there, so you just have to avoid them. it's really stealthy. I haven't played penumbra, but I heard that black plague only is focused on puzzle, and has no monsters. oventure has monsters I think..
Nice review. But try to limit your use of "game". Some 3 line paragraphs you say it at least 10 times, and it ended up distracting me from the actual review.
lol when i played amnesia, i had to take breaks because i would start to panic, they really get in your head with this type of game mechanic. one of the scariest games i have ever played. gonna buy this since its cheaper now for halloween weekend
@AdventureReviews I'd really appreciate it if you could help me out here. I think im definitely gonna buy this game series and the new amnesia the dark descent game, But I was wondering what other adventure games/survival horror games are like this? I love interactivity, story etc more than i do combat but its so hard to find games like this and so far this is the closest thing ive found to my criteria.
ahh penumbra overture. imo the best game frictional games has put out. I love the setting, the great and immersive atmosphere, the feeling of danger when you are being chased (cuz the infected were too slow in black plague, even on hard mode), and most of all......red.
@ofpveteran73 System Shock is getting covered in detail in my coming Deus Ex review.. and imo it is a very different thing to what I am talking about here, when my new review is up you wil lsee what I mean, also Alone in the Dark is 1992, System Shock is 1994.
@ResidentSamurai It was called RE was due to licensing issues. It was made, they called it Biohazrad, had a license issue so renamed it. YES, RE is a official name but it was not intended. If the product has a name and then is quickly renamed to get around some copywrite problem, the new name is not its "real" name imo. RE is about a biological contanament. Biohazard is not only its "true" name but also makes sense were RE implies a supernatural element that isn't in the storylines.
I like Penumbra Overture much more than Black Plague. It was much more sensible, much more atmospheric. It was really well done. I rank it as one of the best games I've ever played. It was just so good. Amnesia just isn't as atmospheric. Well, as I said. It's just amazing. And your review is just amazing!
@WTFjasmine yea! I like the stealth game more then running around shooting things, I mean if you have a gun in the game, you wont be as afraid as you would if your only defence.. is to run and hide!
Its worth as hell... This game is a gem
6 years forward, and Frictional became a household name :-)
Soma's thier latest delight . perhaps a good sci-fi than usual horror they make
How about now? How do you feel about the games now
Penumbra is probably the best game ive ever played. Thank you for this review.
Bronson Nolan if you liked it so much, you should totally play Amnesia: The Dark Decent
@@MemerDad already played it my man, and that weird pig expansion
This is such a good review ! Sir you are very talented and honestly i think ( if you have time ) you should do more reviews !
I'm a huge fan of the survival horror games and played the original Alone in the Dark when it first came out and i loved how you explained everything and connected the dots and showed the evolution in the genre :)

Great review, I'm actually about to pick up Amnesia: The Dark Descent by the same company. It came out yesterday and it looks terrifying.
I have gained so much respect for games just due to this review. I came to get a review of Penumbra, and walked away knowing a little more about video games and their history. Well done! KNOWLEDGE IS POWER!
Your review was really in-depth, really awesome to listen to. Got really much useful information about this game, thank you. :)
Pity you've never reviewed Black Plague, I would have loved to hear your thoughts on it. :-) As well as on later FG titles.

(IIRC, the longer you hold it, the farther you throw the object away.) But yeah, holding an object, swinging it and letting it go is perfectly possible for throwing stuff at short distances.
i skipped a little into the video just to see the gameplay, but your detailed review captured my attention quickly. good job keep it up!
great review! i like how you brought up today's adventure games and compare it to the old style.
his game is terrifying and it deserves all the praise that it gets, I personally find penumbra the black plague to be the scarier of the two though, mostly because while in the first game you could fight with the hammer among other things in the second game, you cant, theres no defense mechanics, just you running and hiding, THATS how I like it, also ever since I played Amnesia and Outlast I find any game trying to be a horror game just isnt one unless its first person because like you said in the video it offers a higher level of immersion and connection between the player and the game world, but also the fact that in the first person perspective I have to do certain things that would put me in danger like looking around corners to see if I'm safe to go on while in third person I can just get close but not right next to the corner and then turn the camera to look around, I abuse whatever perspective I'm given in a game if it will make my journey easier, sure I enjoy a difficult experience but I'm not going to cut a game slack and deliberately not do what I usually do just to make the game scary, as such the Silent Hill series is one that doesnt scare me AT ALL because it takes the third person perspective which breaks my immersion and since I can abuse the third person perspective to basically nerf any fright the game tried to induce it wont scare me ever, P.T. that recently came out on the PS4 which was a playable teaser of Silent Hills which apparently is Silent Hill but took a first person perspective, P.T. didnt scare me at all past a few small jumpscares that didnt phase me too much either, but its a step in the right direction if they plan to make Silent Hills in the first person perspective and perhaps the new game will actually scare me

So thank you friend
Wow. Great review! Your fashion of review seemed just as unique as the game you were describing!
Absolutely outstanding review!
I wish IGN and Gamespot got this in-depth, and more importantly, took the time to review these indie games that can't make it to center stage simply for their lack of advertising dollar.
Keep up the good work!
Great Review... I love the way you explain thins in high depth... and the way you said thanks at the end
Very good review.
The background information and comparisons are something you won't find in most "professional" reviews, these days.
Highly appreciated!
On a side note:
You *REALLY* should play "Penumbra: Black Plague"!

All in all great work!
dude you are a great reviewer this is how every review shold bee.
You, sir, are a fantastic reviewer. I hope you choose to review more games in the future.
This review single handedly swayed my decision to go ahead and purchase the franchise on Steam. Thank you.
Is this game better then Amnesia? Yes. Graphics are shitty but that's what I like about the game, it really does add to the atmosphere and makes you feel lonely in fear.
the action is shitty clunky terrible which kills it
True! Got it.
There's all kinds of fun to be added to almost any title with self-restrictive playing. It's almost like another layer of role-playing within a game that already has you playing a role...
you, sir, know how to review. Well done. As with Frictional Games, you are an indie wonder! Looking forward to more content from you.
Excellent review of the game and overview of the links between the survival horror genre with the adventure game genre, it was interesting to watch for sure.

I already played Amnesia and I've just started playing the Penumbra trilogy. It's great to see, how the game studio actually evolved.
@worIdcitizen Just drag an item into the numbered slots at the top of your inventory screen. Hitting the corresponding number on your keyboard will allow you to "quick-draw" or use any of your items.

You are a master at reviewing! Keep them coming.
This review explained the game perfectly. This review convinced me to buy it and i loved it!
the thing that i really loved and mostly appreciated about this review was his definition of fear. its easy to "scare" someone, you just make it really quiet and then add in a sudden loud noise (hell, that happens to me when i turn on my ipod after forgetting how loud i left it earlier). but to truly give someone "fear", thats an art form. the same goes with movies. thats why games and movies like penumbra and paranormal activity are "frightening" and slashers are just "fun".

Oh, but Requiem does feature some story elements of Penumbra and BP. Unfortunately, it has too few of them and they are not related to the gameplay.
The riddles were nice for a game of that type, but without a plot to move along there was really no motivation.
Amnesia:
There is a new gameplay video released on the frictionalgames channel.
Really good review man. Saw the game at steam and it's for mac also, so i'm thinking it's woth buying.
Thanks!
You did an excellent review for an excellent game! I agree with you 100% with everything you stated in this review. First thing I noticed with Penumbra, was how scary, yet addicting it was. so happy the humble indie bundle gave this one out. gonna play right now
An excelent review to an even better game!

@rowdyroo1 nope, it was more like description of the game type, and a bit detailed the game, real reviews are " what you can do, what's the main thing in it , story line, what kinda character you are playing with and who he is detailed, etc"

I may play this noaw, but amnesia still looks betterr :]
👃
really great review man, you have got alot of talent !
@SuperAldo94 i know right? its like looking at 3 apples and them saying "man, those 2 other fruits sure look like this apple.." its the same thing!
Penumbra: Overture was truly fantastic. I need to get back to playing Black Plague sometime, I've heard it's even better. I can't wait for their next game Amnesia: The Dark Descent, the trailer they have for it is insane.
@ppa0 The original name for those games are Biohazard.
RE3 is actually Biohazard 3: Last Escape.
Are you going to review Amnesia: The Dark Descent? Its out the 8th of September and looks even more frighting than this!!
awesome review.
I saw this game on sale on steam a few months back and thought about getting it but passed. I'm hating that decision now, as it looks to be a GREAT game! I will definitely have to check it out.
It's a review, what did you expect?
Yes, I think so. This game came before Amnesia. In essence, both games run on the same engine from the way I experienced playing both the Penumbra franchise and Amnesia.
@tado05pro Bio Hazard is the real name of resident evil. It is only called Resident Evil in the English release witch is always, by tradition, released after the original Japanese version
i believe the interaction system is a highly improved version of the trespasser interaction system,
That was a brilliant review! Good job mate.
omg you make a great video and your description is cool thanks for the video
@JholmanGames I now know the developers themselves have there own online store @ frictionalgames I would recommend purchasing it form there and send a few more bucks to the developers themselves and cut out the middle man!! Also there new game is about to come out.. I have high hopes for it!

@AdventureReviews sorry i thought system shock came out in 92 and aitd came in 94 btw did u like the modern alone in the dark.
This is more of a history lesson then a review
@MegaNinjaTuna What about Scratches? Have you played that?
@keeshond5 Theyre both made by frictional games, so they have similar game engines and mechanics, although despite that the 2 games are very different. :D
Yes, in-fact the very first time I ever played the game was at my friends house for a sleep over. However after soloing the game it doesn't feel all that scary knowing where all the dogs are and what is going to happen next..
it looks like it plays a lot like the frogwares Sherlock Holmes games. And those are definitely adventure games.
YAY!!!!
@MrHables
I have played amnesia . it's amazing, because it's scary yeah. and you can't kill the monsters in there, so you just have to avoid them. it's really stealthy. I haven't played penumbra, but I heard that black plague only is focused on puzzle, and has no monsters. oventure has monsters I think..
Penumbra: Overture, Requiem and Black Plague; is on sale now at Steam for $3 99 (4$) all together. Until, February 21.
Have you also played the game Amnesia? This game seems very similar
You are a good teller. I would love to try this game. :)
Nice review. But try to limit your use of "game".
Some 3 line paragraphs you say it at least 10 times, and it ended up distracting me from the actual review.
The control seems somewhat similar to frogware's sherlock holmes games.
amazing review but how do you make ur recording look so polished and nice o-o
lol when i played amnesia, i had to take breaks because i would start to panic, they really get in your head with this type of game mechanic. one of the scariest games i have ever played. gonna buy this since its cheaper now for halloween weekend
This is a really solid review. Thanks!
You are a very good commentator. You make it really interesting. (Y)
@AdventureReviews I'd really appreciate it if you could help me out here. I think im definitely gonna buy this game series and the new amnesia the dark descent game, But I was wondering what other adventure games/survival horror games are like this? I love interactivity, story etc more than i do combat but its so hard to find games like this and so far this is the closest thing ive found to my criteria.
damn this was the most in-depth review I have seen in such a long time..Perfect..games like this scare the shit out of me lol..
You're the best reviewer ever!!
P.s I love the penumbra series!!!
ahh penumbra overture. imo the best game frictional games has put out. I love the setting, the great and immersive atmosphere, the feeling of danger when you are being chased (cuz the infected were too slow in black plague, even on hard mode), and most of all......red.
This... Was Beautiful *tears up and cries out of joy*
Maybe to you, but I loved it. It wasn't boring to me.
this is the video that made me love and obsess over this series, and amnesia, and soma owo
I apprecate you coming back to the video for your insight. Did you have a good time with soma?
@@G00B4LIFE oh yes, one of the best and most thought provokin experiences ive had in years tbh
03:03 I killed EVERY SINGLE DOG in this game.:)
now thats a description and a half!
@CaptainFicus There are a total of 3 enemies in Penumbra, lol, and only two of them in each game.
this is how video game reviews should be
@ofpveteran73 System Shock is getting covered in detail in my coming Deus Ex review.. and imo it is a very different thing to what I am talking about here, when my new review is up you wil lsee what I mean, also Alone in the Dark is 1992, System Shock is 1994.
Just thought i'd point out that you had bio hazard 2 art and bio hazard 3 footage.
