Yes, Philip K Dick 's novels and stories were very important to the genre. Neuromancer helped popularize it and has been inspiration over the years, i.e. The Matrix. I'm betting Gibson was of some influence to Snatcher, as Gillian's partner was named after him, and Kojima tends to name check his influences in his games, such as Plisken in MGS2, Major Tom in MGS3, etc. Thanks for watching :-)
Man, nostalgia bomb. The sega CD was one of those weird systems like the jaguar or the CDi that your typical kid around the block didnt have, but had some awesome underrated games like popful mail or lunar.
Yeah, basically the screen gets divided up into a grid of nine squares, so you can shoot with a joypad. Hold up to shoot up, down to shoot down or neutral to shoot centre and the same but with diagonals to shoot diagonally.
@EyeS2pify Yes, the shooting sections don't comprise much of the game really and are just as playable with a D-pad. Rather than have a roaming cursor, the screen is divided into 9 segments which correspond to a direction on the D-pad. So long as you shoot the targets in the order they appear these sections are fairly simple.
Thanks! Yeah the shooting scenes were hard enough with a MD pad. The key is to shoot them in the exact order they appear so when there's 3 or more on screen it becomes more of a memory game than a reflex game. Sometimes I play it on an emulator too, to save me setting up the system. To make it a bit more authentic I bought a device that lets you plug a Playstation controller in via USB. Obviously not exactly the same as playing it on the actual console but still miles better than arrow keys!
I have the Sega Genesis CD version myself and have had it since 1995. Supposedly, the English one only sold a couple thousand unit. So technically, it is a VERY rare game. And one of the few possessions that I will never part with lol
Thanks David, Yeah it's Shining Force CD, which is basically remakes of 2 Shining Force games that came out on the Game Gear but with updated graphics and sound. It's a cracking game but like Snatcher it's kind of expensive. If you want to try Sega CD games you can download Kega Fusion. You can run the games straight off the original CDs, and all regions can be played which is great news as not all of the great games came out over here.
@krux02 This was when you were limited to 10 minutes, and I really didn't want to break it into 2 parts. If you really want to hear the dialog play the game, you'll also avoid spoliers that way.
Also, the Sega CD not only had the final act, but unlike all the other versions (including the Saturn and PSone ports which were based on older versions) it is way more interactive I know a few Snatcher buffs who also know Japanese and they say that the voice-acting in the English version is way better They also tell me Policenauts is better in every way, especially the interface which i thought bogs down the atmosphere of Snatcher.
Not sure about the US version, but I think the UK version is more uncommon than rare. You see them pop up on ebay more often and not, and the high price I is more to do with reputation, and ebay resellers know it. There seem to be fewer these days, but I think people are holding on to them more now.
@IMmephiles Yeah, it is. I haven't beaten it yet (in fact, just began), but the beginning IMMEDIATELY pulls you into the action, as well as opening with a fruitful summarization of what happened to the world, and the intro of Gillian Seed.
Sorry I hit the wrong tab and removed your other comment by mistake. Not sure how much night trap is worth for the 32x CD but it is definitely rarer. To import it from the US is about £50, so don't let it go for much less than that! On 32X I think the video is higher res, not quite as good as the 3DO version but still better. I never had a 32X but have played on one, the only game I'd really like for it is Knuckles Chaotix, but that's another one that goes for a wad on eBay.
@Mysterious0Bob Steal of the century! Hope you enjoy the game. Wish I could find retro games in my local Gamestation. The closest they have is PS1 or GBA. Having said that, I did pick up a complete copy of Actraiser for £15 at a Gamestation in Torquay. Best camping trip ever...
@GamerWho It was about 2 years ago, they don't do retro anymore. Its funny because I downloaded the iso and played through it. I told two of my friends about it and played it again with them. A week later they told me they saw the game at GameStation. I said it was bullshit... but they were right. And it was a BOGOF deal.
I've never really seen many Mega CD versions myself. There is one at the moment on eBay tho. The US version pops up often, but the Japanese versions are obviously more prevalent. Obviously from my name on here (and every other site and XBox Live) you can tell where it came from lol. Also like to add that the game has influences from Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Due to the killing and replacing of the victim. Thats how I describe the game to people as cross of that and Blade Runner
Also the games can all be burned and played on the Sega CD or I guess as you dudes would call it the Mega CD with little effort. There's no copy protection at all. While I frown on piracy (and need to have this in my collection as I have a pretty complete Metal Gear collection and this has enough refferences to MG to fit in my collection) I can't stand playing games on Emulators.
Ill ask somebody i know who happens to be a REALLY hardcore gamer, he plays plenty of Japanese games with transcripts, sometimes when there isnt one he relies just on a dictionary, so ill see what he says But yeah, there is a translation patch coming out soon, its been completed and now going through finishing touches before it goes into bug-testing. It could take up to a year, but itd be the ideal way of playing it
haha great game never played snatcher back in the day but have recently brought a mega cd and been buying all the best games, ive got hold of a copy of snatcher and must say im looking forward to playing it, old skool!!!
well can download it from places and burn to disc to play on the segacd but it's better the have the real thing. still good to test it and see if you like i ti guess before buying it.
Unfortunately, no... I mean, the patch just works for the PSX version, but it's all right, there's allready websites where you can dowload the game allready with the patch incorporated. If you don't have a PSX, you download a emulator and that's all...
You should of continued making reviews... I remember watching this many times back in the day. I always wanted to ask did you record two versions of this.... I remember slight variances.
GamerWho Cool... and I also remember you had some video's on your games (ps2/megadrive) collection too that were quite interesting. Did you delete those?
Gold Strings glad you got a copy then because the prices now are uber ridiculous! I did have some videos about my PS2 and megadrive stuff but made it private because I wasn't too happy with the quality of them.
My pc game pad wouldnt work on the game which annoyed me. I think I needed to configure it or something which I couldn't be bothered to do. And there was no save function on the emulator so I completed snatcher in one sitting from 3pm to 11pm roughly, what a pain.
Great review, but unfortunately Kega Fusion is easily the best MD emulator out there, the only problem? It sucks when it comes to Aspect Ratio hence why it looks so stretched
Which emulator were you using? I use Kega Fusion and you can save it via the in-game save method. Good job really or the review would have been a pain in the butt!
@lloydy187 Yeah I got Patched Policenauts working on my PSP. It's pretty decent. I would love to play Space Adventure Cobra as it is one of my favourite anime movies. Sadly it's hard to get hold of. I've only seen it on eBay once.
@Cheiftain2 your right i loved every second of it! amazing game! i am know quite intrested in playing a game called policenauts! not sure if you have heard of it or played it already but its another hideo kojima game and there is a english patch for it, looks pretty cool another game i played on the mega cd recently is a game called the space adventure cobra which is similer to both.
It was kega fusion but I assumed the in game save function would not work if I closed the programme, for some reason? I had nothing better to do that day anyway. I downloaded the playsation version just for fun(only worked in black and white on my psx for some reason) those CG videos were god awful, don't know why they bothered,
This game needs re-releasing on one of the next gen download services or even to the DS. I've got Policenauts on the Saturn. I know it's in Japanese, but I had to get it. I don't suppose you know anywhere where there is a good transcript of the game so that a non Japanese player could play along?
@Backinblack10001 I remember Rumblelows. Haha! I would so lay down £44 for this game. And a couple for eBay ;) Not played corpse killer, but isn't it like Lethal Enforcers?
Great stuff. You just may want to take a step back from your mic, you keep poppping it whenever you say Ps. 60 quid?! What?! I paid 3 pounds in a Gamestation for it. And it came with Micro Machines V3.
I'm so annoyed. I've lost my original copy of Snatcher on the mega CD and now after watching this video I realise they are going for 150 pounds on ebay!
I just got the game yesterday. I was just wondering do you actually fight anything in this game? I've just been talking ,looking and investigating so far. seems interesting though....
id love to have this game but it is going for like $200 now, my question is that, is the gun required to play the game or can you play without it, thanks?
Good video, I'd always wanted to play snatcher but it was just too much money. but then I used an emulator and that was that sorted. Playing the shooting scenes with a keyboard is a bitch though.

This is the best review of Snatcher i have seen! great review!! you put a ton of work into this!! 5 stars!
Man, nostalgia bomb. The sega CD was one of those weird systems like the jaguar or the CDi that your typical kid around the block didnt have, but had some awesome underrated games like popful mail or lunar.
One of the greatest games of all time. Done deal.
Great review man! So nostalgic even thinking about this game.
Yeah, basically the screen gets divided up into a grid of nine squares, so you can shoot with a joypad. Hold up to shoot up, down to shoot down or neutral to shoot centre and the same but with diagonals to shoot diagonally.

True, they are not for everybody, although Snatcher is most likely the most accessible "interactive story" games.
Great review man!!!
Amazing, just finished the game an hour before watching this.
I have the Sega Genesis CD version myself and have had it since 1995. Supposedly, the English one only sold a couple thousand unit. So technically, it is a VERY rare game. And one of the few possessions that I will never part with lol

Yep they are, also easy to replace if they get broken. Some of the games were released in the big boxes though, like Pugsy and Ground Zero Texas.
@krux02
This was when you were limited to 10 minutes, and I really didn't want to break it into 2 parts. If you really want to hear the dialog play the game, you'll also avoid spoliers that way.
I own the USA version, I had no Idea it goes for 300 USA bucks. I'll wait until the game reaches 10,000,000.
Also, the Sega CD not only had the final act, but unlike all the other versions (including the Saturn and PSone ports which were based on older versions) it is way more interactive

this game is BEAST... its scary and cool at the same time.
@Ritchstorm pretty standard for sega rare game. if you want legit copy. its best to get it ASAP its likely the value will go up and up.
Yeah, if not more. The last one I saw in good condition on eBay went for over £100
And if you actually read the "readme" file, it's pretty self explanatory and easy to figure out.
Not sure about the US version, but I think the UK version is more uncommon than rare. You see them pop up on ebay more often and not, and the high price I is more to do with reputation, and ebay resellers know it.

Yeah the US version would run in NTSC so it would be in black and white if your TV doesnt do it.
Cool video. I definitely have to check this out on RetroArch sometime.
There's always emus, but of course its never really the same.
@GamerWho It was about 2 years ago, they don't do retro anymore. Its funny because I downloaded the iso and played through it. I told two of my friends about it and played it again with them. @GTAfan421
Not just him, Ed is obviously Danny Glolver
Ill ask somebody i know who happens to be a REALLY hardcore gamer, he plays plenty of Japanese games with transcripts, sometimes when there isnt one he relies just on a dictionary, so ill see what he says

Thanks, I would like to make a return in the future. as for this video there is only this version.
GamerWho Cool... and I also remember you had some video's on your games (ps2/megadrive) collection too that were quite interesting. Did you delete those?
...and I bought Snatcher after watching this. Cost me £90-100 back then. About five or six years ago now.
Gold Strings glad you got a copy then because the prices now are uber ridiculous! I did have some videos about my PS2 and megadrive stuff but made it private because I wasn't too happy with the quality of them.

hello father
6:00 boyz n the hood .. RICKY!!!!!!! BOOM!!
Shame neither of those games came out in the UK. I'd quite like to try Popful mail.
Which emulator were you using? I use Kega Fusion and you can save it via the in-game save method. Good job really or the review would have been a pain in the butt!
Really can't afford this on ebay so I have downloaded a ROM and am burning it onto a disk. Maybe one day I will be able to get a legit copy of it!
@lloydy187
Yeah I got Patched Policenauts working on my PSP. It's pretty decent.
I would love to play Space Adventure Cobra as it is one of my favourite anime movies. Sadly it's hard to get hold of. I've only seen it on eBay once.

70?! Hahaha, I got it for 3 pounds in my local GameStation. And it came with Micro Machines V3.
It was kega fusion but I assumed the in game save function would not work if I closed the programme, for some reason? I had nothing better to do that day anyway. I downloaded the playsation version just for fun(only worked in black and white on my psx for some reason) those CG videos were god awful, don't know why they bothered,
Thanks :-)
this would be so good on a mobile platform!!!
Thats how much i paid for it last year. But it was really worth it!
One question: using the keyboard, will I only need three buttons on top of the enter button and arrow keys to play this game?
Shit your Sega CD game cases are way better than the crap they forced on us in the States!
This game needs re-releasing on one of the next gen download services or even to the DS.
I've got Policenauts on the Saturn. I know it's in Japanese, but I had to get it. I don't suppose you know anywhere where there is a good transcript of the game so that a non Japanese player could play along?
Solid review... METAL GEAR?!
@Backinblack10001 I remember Rumblelows. Haha!
I would so lay down £44 for this game. And a couple for eBay ;)
Not played corpse killer, but isn't it like Lethal Enforcers?
great vid
@lloydy187 you wont be disappointed man. trust me
Are you talking about the patch? Would love to try and figure that one out.
I'm guessing I can't just patch a my Saturn version ;P
Now you can't get a copy for under $250, which really stinks.
@truthseekerdct is this 1 of those story telling games? cause heavy rain was awesome!
Yep, I blame all these RUclips video reviews....
Well damn... now i have to go dig up my Sega CD and swing by eBay...
I just got the game yesterday. I was just wondering do you actually fight anything in this game? I've just been talking ,looking and investigating so far. seems interesting though....
id love to have this game but it is going for like $200 now, my question is that, is the gun required to play the game or can you play without it, thanks?
@ENGLANDTHEGREATEST
No accounting for taste.
Good video, I'd always wanted to play snatcher but it was just too much money. but then I used an emulator and that was that sorted. Playing the shooting scenes with a keyboard is a bitch though.
oh fuck yea im getting this game because of Hideo Kojima
Well, I guess you are not loosing Policenaut, now that it's in English...
A fun game but not worth 200 dollars!
haha im bidding for a sega cd 2 and just relised for this game goes for!!!!!!!!!!! Fail
"Yeah, it's shit" hahahaha
Ummmmmmmmno.
talking while the video is talking = bad idea. Cant listen to any of them
omggg, i hate these kind of games....
