I'm not sure if anyone has made this comment yet, but if you have users that are part of a group, you need to give that group access to the shared space too. Otherwise you can give your users full access and they still won't have any... Your videos have been a tremendous help!!! Keep up the great work!

I know its been a few months since you made this video, but just in case you missed it, Synology did clean up all the shared folder permissions and implemented pretty much everything you wished it had.
Folder level access, recursively, per user or group now!

@@WisamAlRawi I can't get it to work, despite some experience with Linux/Unix permissions. What I find is that it seems only Administrators can use shared space, not ordinary users, in Synology Photos. I'll keep trying but it's not looking good after a half a day playing around. The workaround might be to simply tell an ordinary user (not an Administrator) to use "Personal Space" and be careful as to what type photos they put in. I have gotten the "link" feature to work with photos/albums for all users.

Hang in there, they will index eventually. I had the same problem when I made the switch but tried it first on a “j” class machine (DS220j). Huge mistake! It just doesn’t have the processing power. After a few months, I bought the DS220+ and relegated the DS220j to a remote backup. Great video… as usual. As family Photo Management was my main reason for acquiring a NAS, I had some of this worked out. However understanding the use of the Shared Folder was great.
Synology did a good job with Photos but missed the mark on a few things. Is there a place one can request new features? One of my biggest requests would be to have full logic control on conditional albums. For example, share all the pics of me with my wife less those where I am with my old girlfriends! 😜

    • @tomgrey3046
      @tomgrey3046 3 года назад

@@cyberwasp461 well, that was not that obvious in moments, actually, files are stored in home/drive/moments, /homes/username/moments, and shared content was/is stored in /photo/...
When a phone was synced with moments, there was yet another subfolder created for every new device under /home/drive/moments/device_name. The /home & /homes are linked together (check file path in file properties), but /photo shared content is duplicated. I wonder then if Photos now solves this and shared space is not duplicated. That can take up or save a lot of storage space, especially when videos are in the libraries. I guess this might be checked very easily by comparing file paths in properties on DSM7. Can you look at it, guys?

But you said that you don't want to be accessing or using the Admin account very much after initial setup, but photos upload and access is a daily thing. Synology looks interesting. Thanks to your "Install Nextcloud on a RaspberryPi ", I've been using Nextcloud on a rapsberry pi 4 running on an SSD. It's great for syncing files and photos. Like you, I just dumped my 58,000 photos from the past 20 years then ran a dedup script. It does okay, not as easy as Google, but at least it's private. Makes it easy to share links to to individual photos, folders, or "favorites". Good video. Thanks. The key use of NAS for my family was keeping all the photos at one place. It is especially important when we travel and take the pictures by different devices. Manual sharing and collection at one place is always a headache. I do not like to use suggested approach with personal and shared space as there will be manual work by moving from one folder to another or duplication of pics. Instead I decided to use one "home media' user account and logged in all the family members on their mobile Syn Photo, then each decides if he/she wants to make full back up of the photos to NAS automatically from Iphone Photos or select pics manually. as we use the same account we see all the photos collected together with no manual work. The only challenge under such scenario is keeping the pics safe from accidental deletion by kids if they are logged in.

    Great video as always.
I’ve been using Photos to back up my photos for a little while now, but this video has made me think I have set it up incorrectly.
On my NAS, I have a main admin user account that I used to do all the admin stuff. Then for Photos I use my “normal” non-admin user account - all my phone photo backups occur under my this account. I try to keep the admin account purely for admin.
However I now realise that using Photos generally via my non-admin account, I am limited in what I can do. I can’t create a shared space for example.
Is there a way of my non-admin user an admin only in Photos so my non-admin account has admin abilities only in Photos?

I have Synology on DSM 7.1. I have Photos set up and it works great for me. As the admin, I use QuickConnect for all of my personal access at home or outside the home. I set up a family member USER (brother) and he lives out of state. How can I get him a link to use that will allow him to access his shred folder. I have logged in as him here at homeland it all looks set up properly, he just needs to be able to log in.

Thanks for the video! I am using DSM7.1 and Synology Photos. Just received my NAS a few weeks ago so still playing around with it and trying to understand all the settings, etc. But is there a way that I can create a shared album and put photos into it as well as my wife or family members be able to upload pictures into that same shared album? so if we went on a vacation, we both take pictures, now we want to upload our pictures to one shared album say, "vacation", is there a way to do that? Also, if I download all my photos from my phone, if I get a new phone, how do I upload all my photos back to my phone or select which ones I want back on my phone? is there a restore function?

Thanks for the helpful info! This is exactly why I bought my NAS - To manage family videos and videos. I still have a question - How do I create Albums in the Shared Space for all users to see? I have two users (My Admin account, and my wife's account). I'd love to be able to create Albums as a way to organize our photos and give her access to it. Having to share every single Album seems cumbersome. Surely there's a way she can have access to the Albums I created in the "Albums" tab, right?

(EDIT: I upgraded to 1200 Mbps downstream, 40 Mbps up, and still the vids buffer as stated below. What's next ?)
Why might my MP4 video clips in Synology Photos (shot in 4k 60) be playing back so poorly - constant buffering, choppy?
Connected to a 920+ (SHR2) via SMB on my mac desktop. Upload speed 23 mbps. download 500 mbps. 14 TB of free space. In addition, the same videos just don't play back at all for users attempting to view these clips via a link on a mobile phone browser.
Sigh. I had really high hopes.

I'm considering using this to collaborate with clients on photo albums. One of our small businessess biggest struggles is getting client feedback on the reordering of the chronology of photos. Would this allow us to share an album with clients for them to be able to drag and drop the photos into a different chronology. Would we then be able to lock in the new order by changing filenames before we exporting out and into our design software?

Hi Will. Great video! I got a 1621+ and trying to set up TWO separate users for Synology Photos (me and my GF). We want photos to be private for both accounts (no common area between the accounts set up (but I understand admin can always access files))
Interface for uploading and downloading is over wifi and SD card.. but also it would be VERY convenient for both of us to have an individual/personal folder that contains or private images on our personal laptops (win 10).
If you could cover such scenario in a video it would be very helpful indeed.

That is something I really wish was built into Synology Drive, but unfortunately the personal Synology Photos is the only folder you cannot sync to your laptop in drive unfortunately.
What might be the best bet is a resilosync between them

    This is getting very complicated.
    I have used your set-guide.
    And that is okay.
And I have used Synonogy Photos Mobile.
    And it works too.
But not in the way that I want.
I want to show friends photos from speciel folders on my NAS
In Photos Mobile there is a lot things to do before reaching the photos I want to present to them.
I would like to present the albums to the user and he is able to start a diasshow.
Do you know of a way to do this or an app that can do that simple task.
Or do I have to set it up my self?
    regards
    Morten

Really great explanation of sharing and the shared space. Unfortunately I found out that the facial recognition did not carry the names of faces over to the shared user, just a "Who is this"" under each face that it carried over to the share user. Album sharing works well but each photo thumbnail in an album has my admin username on it as an overlay. It's not very nice looking. With luck this app will get better in a future upgrade. For now I'm looking into an Open Source docker based alternative.
