The total station is just a modern name for a theodolite. GPS is not accurate, so he setup a local coordinate system probably. Its like a giant graph. Total stations computes the location of the staff, the prism on top allows accurate laser measurement. It would be interesting to see the exact coordinates and compare them to see the error

Total station is the coolest thing to happen in construction in the last 50 years, at least. So accurate and so fast, it's crazy. I ran one for 4 years with one of my companies.

Haha, was expecting half an hour of doing 3 4 5 with stakes, and got 30 seconds of a chap with GPS. Bosh! Never seen that before, though I'm familiar with the tech from an other world. Very interesting seeing it being used. Agree on the food, can't beat a roast chicken for cost/health/ease. No excuse for eating shite all the time
