If only there were more good teachers out there. Sadly, in the states at least, most apprentices are usually eager and ready to learn and work, but get stone-walled by a lot of the old timers who usually get upset by running into young men that actually want to work and do a good job, so they go out of their way to not teach correctly, or teach at all a lot of times, and intentionally set up apprentices to make mistakes or get hurt.
Fair play to mike! A year in doing it he seems very keen which is very good and rare nowadays! Don’t worry about the money for now gain the knowledge and the money will come and his work is also very neat for a year in apprentice
Pure Class this Charlie, It's brilliant that you're passing on the knowledge, you've got a good lad there. Just really good to see/watch you passing on the skills
Mate - As soon as I saw this fella slinging his muck down the line, he is better than every single year 1 or year 2 apprentice or improver I've seen. Then taking on the pick and dip. Mustard for a year on the trowel and better than improvers 1 year in. The advantage improvers have over apprentices is they get to see probably 20+ bricklayers techniques and the pluses and minuses before deciding on whats good and if they were a good hoddy they will have the ear and teachings of said bricklayer that they served once they have pulled out the trowel. Also the fella had the confidence to put the camera hat on as well. I see promise here no doubt, which is why Charlie saw something and was showing his technique and thought process throughout. This short video is paramount to the difference in confidence and application for the 1st year trainee brickys. Thumbs up.
Just passed my CSCS test last week and studied bricklaying in college . I left college in 2021 but had to take care of my mum. It’s a nightmare mate where I’m based no one is looking for apprentices and they just don’t seem interested in teaching people in my area
That's the trouble finding people who actually care about the trade enough that are willing to teach. You might be better off trying to find a local builder who does good quality work than trying to get on site right away.
I am not a brick layer, but people think it is a semi skilled job, but to do it well and fast their is a lot skill and thought. My Grand Father trained as a brick layer but did not finish his apprentice ship because of the First World War, so he only worked as a labourer. But he worked with a brickie and did all the hard bits, like brick arches where you could rub the bricks to get good joints, keep going mate.
I really wish I got into a trade, I’m 25 and I only just realised it was the best path forward for me. Apprenticeships only get given to 16-24 year olds in Scotland. Gutted.
Mate you have a keen, humble smart young fella there. Follows instructions and isn’t afraid to try a different way. Learn all ways and choose what suits you. Keep him!
He is doing a great job for only doing it for 1 year, knowledge and great experience will come with Charlie’s guidance and skills keep up the good work your a natural it seems.
It's nice to see some youngsters wanting to learn and do well. Very good job fare play to him and if he sticks with Charlie he be a very top bricklayer in a few years 👌👌
I love the video. This actually makes me so sad. Last time I layed brick’s I built an extension with my dad (who passed away recently). I haven’t layed bricks for a while and the other day I found out how good my dad was at bricklaying and regret and wish I got him to teach me before he passed. It’s definitely something I would love to do to honour him but it’s been some time since I layed a brick
Nice one Charlie showing the young lad tricks of the trade I've always said learn more when someone is showing you the way keep up the good videos Charlie see you in the next one simon
Great teacher, and lucky bloke. Funny I also learned something about pointing watching that. Intrigued how long after starting laying the soldiers did you start the pointing - how best to keep an eye on it when to start the pointing? (I've only ever done small mixes that prob go off faster due to slow handling - no hoodie 😊)
I’ve been doing it 40 years plus and you’ve got it or you ain’t/ the boys got it for sure (nice one Chas for putting him right with a few things good man 🍀👍
I'm so glad you said that about how he was buttering the brck it looked so awkward 😂. Good lad and seems keen which is great to see. I suppose like you said there's more than one way to skin a cat .
Just wanted to know how I get into bricklayering as an Apprenticeship; where I would need to go to sign up to do the Apprenticeship. I'm at university right now but it's not really for me anymore.
I think you’ve got one there chazza, he’ll earn your gang some good money down the line, Tom can be full time laying bricks whilst he does the hod and lays once loaded out

As a labourer engineering bricks are the worst to work with especially if the forklift driver don't know what there doing and break the pallet there sitting on
You gotta wet them boards up boi! all the muck stick to it and sap the life out of it. Top job Mike, Charlie will double Your speed with half the effort in no time.

Stu and his father do those replacement window videos...Great work. Some fellows do to much playing with the mud...anyways I do enjoy the content..... All the best from Chicago
He listens to everything Charlie said and applied it. An apprentice with interest and eager to learn makes teaching so much easier.
