Saw Tower Of Power at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas in the early 1970s. After that concert I went out and purchased every Tower Of Power album I could find.
Belisa Hennington, pretty cool. My mom bought me this album for Christmas along with other amazing albums around 1995. Timeless sounds. Great live album. Get the Soul Vaccination Live album released in 1998. Great energy like this. Garibaldi just rejoined and had so much to offer after being away for so long. Seen them several times. Seeing them again in March this year in a small place so the room will be shakin'! They've still got it!
45 yrs ago I was 13 yrs old living in a group home in Aurora Ontario and my favourite 'staff', Leigh turned me onto this and I played the sht out of it. Both Leigh and this Band made me want to be the best version of me I could ever be. Best. Band. Ever.
I am glad to find all of you guys here!!!!!! We all have something in common We like and recognized the best band with the tightest Brass Section Ever!!!! Long Lives Tower of Power!!!!!!
Owned the LP, wore the album out. Lenny Picket, circular breathing. Amazing! Chester Thompson on Hammond B3. Amazing! I was raised in Boyle Heights , California. Born 1958 BC, (before computers).
Another generalization. There are quite simply a ton of great drummers, funk or otherwise. I loved Garibaldi extensively in particular when he was doing a jazzy fusion gig called Wishful Thinking after his first stint with TOP. They played small clubs like Le Cafe in Van Nuys in the mid 80s. He's a great player indeed but let's not get carried away.
I saw TOP first in Seattle with Heart & Foreigner, fell in love, bought this album and was whizzed that the whole B-Side was this song. Then I heard the solos and the crescendo at the end - it has been a favorite ever since.
Lead vocal by Hubert Tubbs. Talented singer that had some success in European markets, but sadly never really broke out very big. His tracks with TOP were very good.
Outstanding when LP does his solo it sounds like he is playing 2 or 3 different horns amazing . He plays a long solo (LP) Lenny Pickett, Long Playing. TOP has always my favorite band.
Saw them in1977 @ UC Irvine Ca. The Bay area boyz put on great show... This song was funky and tight... Thank you Freddy for taking me and driving me there in your powder blue ford van... What is Hip? ToP forever!! Aloha Kimo
i got out Marine Corp in1970, saw these guys in Seattle a few times, then met my lost 2 brothers bout 2o yrs ago went to Sacramento see youngest brother he called me in Vegas told me that TOP WAS PLAYING at fair grounds hus wife's bank help put together, got to go back stage take group picture with them, even though i bever met my brothers growing up amazingly we all had love for this group, seen them couple times at JAZZ ALLY in Seattle, i live in Vegas, si when they come here I'm there
One of the most is that it your the most The erryy sounds of keys bleed into the extravagant boom of expression in funk n style , waka waka waka wak oh come on down let’s hit this again n again pure perfection n Classic TOP , and don’t you forget it
Love this album one of their best and so says DG as well. Some monster solos here from both Lenny and Chester. I so love this band my favorite what so ever got almost all albums.
It actually got funky when CT switched to the CLAVINET....--then goes bass pedal to the metal...B3....I’m just these guys are from my SF bay.....after CT ascends and makes it rain...ROCCO PICKS it right up....LORDY
so much fun, these guys...in '73 we got them to play our high school (CB) in sac...i think we paid them $175! got to dance the last song (you're still a young man) with a girl 2 years older than me. she was my total crush and simply an unforgettable dance, woman, AND band. i will always associate these cats with groove, funk, fun, and that magical romance. keep on truckin T.O.P.
There never was or will be anything as perfect in modern music as this group.Absolute control and incredible artistry...Oh what has happened to sounds like this.
I swear every time I listen to this version I flip out. Between Lenny Picket's insane solo, Chester Thompson's insane B3 Hammond solo, and let's not forget that solo Mic Gillette (R.I.P) did with playing that high end solo on the trumpet and then switching to his Superbone Trombone which was amazing and insane. Going from. A Jet Tone mouthpiece over to a trombone mouthpiece was incredible. I saw Mic do that at a concert in Hartford. CT. This band is in a league of its own. All the band members are special.
turns out yes it is! i was able to speak to CT after one of his shows at the SF Jazz Center. he said there are no lies during his solo, and the bass lines are all his - a combo of left hand and foot pedals. CT is a musical genius!
Lenny pickets tenor Saxaphone solo… 1:43 mins -10:23 mins … 8.8 minute horn solo… They were certainly not joking when they said “Knock yourself out “ Could it ever get any better ? That’s why Tower of Power is always THE TOP BAND ever ….!!!! FULL STOP 🛑…
I was going to Cal in the early-mid 70s and LP would play for spare change on Sproul Plaza. I had no idea who he was at the time but he would always draw a big crowd. He could hold a note for at least two minutes, which was impressive. This solo is even more so!
OoOoOoO That would be beyond awesome as well! Sometimes *only* the original will do; there are so many live versions of "Knock Yourself Out," but this is "The version my ears wanted." These are the EXACT Lenny Pickett and Chester Thompson solos I wanted to hear. Some tasty imports are a yummy idea as well! YESSSS
GOD BLESS YOU GOD BLESS YOU GOD BLESS YOU GOD BLESS YOU GOD BLESS YOU !!!!! THANK YOU FOR BEING THE FIRST TO POST THIS!!! OMG I FEEL LIKE IT'S CHRISTMAS! THANK YOU, YOU BEAUTIFUL SOUL!!!! though I guess it doesn't really matter now- they still perform live and are relevant- but the lack of a steady front man back then (along with more hit singles like "So Very Hard To Go" ) curtailed their chances of long term success.
@@rayjr62 I've said that for years. The revolving door of singers. That's why TOP has always been road warriors. Playing 200 plus dates on the road for years. @@paularnold90 TOP finally got a record deal again around 1990, because of the demos with Tom Bowes. Album "Monster On A Leash." I like the guys you mentioned, along with Tom. Tom was there 7 years. The bass Player and drummer. Are stunning. Sax solo is long. Wanna hear amazing sax. Go to Pittsburgh read a free mag whos playing in Pittsburgh. Go hear Kenny Blake. Stupid good. He can play 5 notes and a tear drops from my eye. Saves a lot of time. Ps. Just saved me a trip to N. Y. all true.
lenny pickets solo must be one of the best solos youll hear any instrument , been listening to this since 1976 , stands alone really
did u listen before then
Yes I reckon that long solo held together + all the rest , top solo of anyone , not that it's good to compare
It was a phenomenal solo. The tuxedo with the top hat was a little over the top. And the dance! I get dizzy every time I relive it in my mind!
Lenny was, and is one of the Greatest Saxophone players on the Planet.
The Coletran licks he works in as he funks out are just amazing and then the overtones at the end are just ridiculously technically difficult.
Saw Tower Of Power at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas in the early 1970s. After that concert I went out and purchased every Tower Of Power album I could find.
One of the greatest Tenor solos EVER taken!!! EPIC!! LOVE the Pickett!!
Lenny is a beast. A monster. A beastly beast.
............and playing what is BASICALLY a "bisbigliando" for 1 & 1/2 minutes straight between 8:55 - 10:23............(8^O
Just Enuf and just too much.

@@rickgraham786 That solo was nine minutes of bliss!
My parents helped organize this concert back in 76'. I've never stopped listening to Tower of Power. I never will.
