Ran 1 mile without walking for the 1st time 2 weeks ago! Now that I have done that I just keep telling myself you did it before you can do it again plus some! Thanks for the great advice! Love you guys!
I’ve used running to improve my mental health and I still do when I have bad days, I’ve found going for runs in the morning will put me in a more awake, productive and talkative state instead of being groggy and depressed the whole day it’s amazing what running can do
Yes, excellent tips. Having a strong mindset is one of the biggest problems of runners. Be strong, be tough, be unlimmited, be unstoppable, never give up ! I want, I can ! The strong mind we get while running can also be used in our lives (profession, life, relationship, etc.)
Little tip tho: if your a very beginner do not start out too hard. Do run walk intervals to get your body adjusted to running. I made this mistake when I joined cross country. I was very new and from the start they had me running 3 miles every day (except Sunday). Yes, I got incredible endurance from it. But I also got terrible shin splints that I ran through, that eventually turned into a bruised tibia. What I’m saying is, just be careful when starting out!
Excellent tips. 47 year old here in his rookie season (been running for 7 months now) of running. I busted out 5miles (no hills, flat trail along a waterfront) a few days ago, my PR for distance. Feeling like a champ! Thanks Run Experience for all your videos and help. A new subscriber here.
Whenever I am running a race, I get a nagging voice in my head saying things like "slow down a bit", "everything hurts, you can slow down". I had my best race in my season when I consciously said "no I am going now." Legit broke my PR by 1:30 that race :)
David Goggins estimates that you're at 40% of your actual ability when the brain says, you're done! I'm not sure about that exact percentage, but I have agree that he's close!
I’m a Professional “Pusher” not a professional Athlete I do it merely for my health. 1’ Mental first 2 Physical just immediately benefits. I run uphill 4 miles once a week at least cuz I only have uphill at home! But I MUST, it keeps me calm keeps my body and mind clean of stress. I do smoke a pipe but I don’t let it stop me I make my body handle what it needs. I just know I’m a better person if I run I need to help my body e mind detox, the benefits are the motivation I need. I highly encourage you to not give up ever specially if you’re just beginning. Your body can and is happy to do it, it’s the mental inertia that slugs you yet that is your motivation to discover the inertia is illusion we put it there and we can choose to undo it, your whole mentality willl benefit, enjoy the joy and peace that come with running because you want and can
I learnt that the best motivation is when I do it for myself, to be fitter faster to beat my personal best, to fill my medal hanger etc Yeah it seems very lonesome, but I used to have all these big "Why"s to be healthy for kids, loved ones, or to look good physically to find a partner etc.. I found none of that ever last until I finally put myself in the center of the equation. I am my biggest motivator.
Completed my first 5k under 40 yesterday (it's slow, but still an achievement for me). And I was thinking, if I want to be able to do a half-marathon, my mind has to be tougher. And I think that being aware of that is a great first step. As I was jogging, after 1 minute, my brain would already tell me to stop, it's boring to just jog. But I had to get over that. I started to ask myself questions like "can I still breath? Yes. So continue. How does your legs feel? Fine? Continue." But it's really the boredom of just jogging that I have to fight. I have my music, but I realized that I'm not listening to it at all even though I have it in my ears...
Great vid!!! I've been having so many issues with my calves when I run. On Sunday I just told myself that I'm going to run a 5K with NO issues and that's exactly what I ended up doing. The moment I started feeling little tweaks in my calf my brain immediately went into panic mode but I just took a deep breath and was able to finish. Not the BEST time but I was happy I was able to finish that distance.
Man, this is good stuff. I feel like this is encouragement for mental toughness for life in general, that part about results and life goes on at 4:55 was profound man! I could definitely apply that mentality to a lot of things. Needed to hear that this morning, thank you 🙏
I'm not new to running and still have a lot of trouble keeping mentally strong during a race. My best races (hands down) are when I give it 100% and my mind lets me give it 100%. Feels so good mates, legit runner's highs are found from there :)
Yeah When I was running a miler recently, I was pleased with myself that I managed to run all of it, up all the hills, even though running the hills makes me slow down. That in mind. Those who hadn't ran up the hills started to over take me and I felt drained of energy, compared to those who were now overtaking and building up speed as they approached the final 2 miles I was getting slower. I only managed the sprint finish. If only I could maintain good speed throughout even after hills.
PAMELA HARVEY i usually tell myself that hills work a different part of my legs than normal, even if it may not be true. That way i feel like i have all the energy i need to maintain a good speed up a hill
I run D1 in college as a mid distance runner and I often find myself halfway through an XL run that’s fast or a really hard workout wanting to give up. I found that continually asking myself why can’t I just take 1 more step helps. Instead of focusing on the fact that I have 40 more mins of running I focus on getting through the next 30 seconds, the next landmark, the next meter mark. If you don’t break it down it gets overwhelming. Even the best runners face a mental battle. But that’s all it is guys, a mental battle.
Great information. I live near New Orleans and went for a 9 miler yesterday on the levee. My quads started to ache around mile 7, but I pushed on to 9 miles. Running is mostly mental.
Been down for a year due to injury. 6 day week runner, and competing in half marathon races. Finally pushed out a 7 mile run yesterday, but I'm having to work on the mental struggle. Thanks for the video
What I do is say to myself I am going to run to a certain spot, so that is the goal. I don't stop until I get there except for traffic :) it gets very hard mentally, one foot in from of the other, not that hard really, keep moving. Remember that your mind gives up long before the body does.

I did my 2nd 10k slower pace but obviously wasn't in the shape I was back in highschool (8 years ago) but I was just 20mins over my first 10k of 59mins. But now I know I have to build my base and slowly build that endurance to beat my old time
Lots of love for Goggins (good!) but I haven't seen his 2 key phrases: "embrace the suck," and "motivation is BS." He doesn't like motivation because it's too situational. If it's cold, if you feel tired, you won't be motivated. So do it anyway. Show up. Find a higher purpose. And if it sucks, *embrace the suck* ;-) Edit: fixed Goggins autocorrect
my whole family always gets onto me for practicing running because yes, i am skinny i guess, but i still dont usually have that much energy and i can't even walk for over an hour. i *want* to last longer, i *want* to get better. im not getting into running to lose weight, i just want to have some amount of endurance. i am now practicing secretly..to avoid the harsh comments of others. hopefully i can get better : )
Went out on Sunday for my usual Trail Run didn’t have lack of sleep/ coming down with something so just went for a casual run. Admired the views, but I got out there.
Great video guys, and something we can all try to improve no matter how good we "naturally" are. There's an awesome book "How bad do you want it?" that talks about developing running ental training that is great for this!
My mind is more powerful than my body😄I’ve proven it many times in life on whatever I do,I always think that I can do it and I believe that I can I do it😄💪💪I also do self affirmation and it helps a lot.
I'd say that this is not for beginners. You have to be in good shape to push your limits or you might break yourself. For instance, I'm currently far from my best and if push myself towards my limits, my knees will probably hurt next three weeks.
I get what you are saying. In the beginning, it's all about holding back and becoming consistent. Though I suppose in the beginning you have to develop a different type of mental training just to get out there!
I disagree. I think it's just as important for beginners as it is for elite athletes. I think a person's "limits" exist on a sliding scale that varies from person to person. Of course a beginner probably should not push themselves to the extent an elite athlete would, but pushing out of their comfort zone is still equally important. I definitely do not believe a person has to be in great shape to push their perceived limits
Have you made a video about best things to do while running, such as music, podcasts, audiobooks etc.? I’m looking for new material for my half marathon and would appreciate suggestions (:
As I was watching, I said to myself that Coach Nate should talk about Dr. Tim Noakes' Central Governor Theory, and he did! It is still a theory, but it seems more reasonable and intuitive than the prior idea that skeletal muscle regulates itself. During my first serious BQ attempt, which was successful, I had a hard time holding my head up the last few miles, my eyes were barely open, and everything hurt, but I kept saying to myself that I didn't run (count them down) miles to not qualify. After the finish I noticed that I was only seeing in black and white- my color vision returned later in the day. That told me I pushed hard, and I have never pushed as hard in a race since.

My #1 reason to start running? I fall into this risk catagory when Carona would catch me my life could turn really bad.. I want to do all which is in my controle to prevent me from being this fatal victim. The outbreak of this pandemic made me realize how vulnerable we actually can be . I vulnerable I can be when a potential lethal virus is on the loose. Better be prepared to be balanced in body and mind . I don't care about distances, I care about living a healthy life in a strong body and tranquil mind..

Hi, I'm not new to your channel, I do run just a very little but I would really like to push myself and mainly to trigger my mental toughness.I am 45, not over weight but do you think running is too hard to push myself into metal toughness? Thank you for all your video and advices.
Hi Marie! Running is a GREAT way to push and develop your mental toughness! And you don't need to be running marathons to get the benefits. Even pushing yourself to run a bit farther or to try out a new trail that you might be a bit nervous about are opportunities to test yourself and how you're able to manage your emotions and thoughts when the going gets tough :)
I have given up for now i put on 9 pounds on an intake of just 1250 calories im fastidious with my diet and exercise and ive never hated my body more in my life. I need to lose weight as its affected my spine and hips and the week I upped my exercise i gained weight. I now do none as I find it so demoralising. I might get 30 minutes walk. Id a body close that was almost ripped now its flabby and my bones are damaged. I was too frail but this wasn't a good Maybe it was from stress and I retained water but it was devastating to see that pound after a week of counting.
My favorite quote when things get hard while running is: *Mental toughness is finding fuel in an empty tank. * Telling that to myself makes me think about why I run and how miserable I felt in times of injury. Always makes me feel so grateful for being able to run and works even after 30k...😂
Only the Mind limits you, u have to go beyond the mind to awernes. Once u learn how to quite the mind, there wont be anything to tell you to stop. I think no human ever reached he's true physical potential.
I’m that guy who’s only at 500 meter will feel that lungs needed to take a break, legs burning and mind stoping me, does that mean that I’m not physically and mentally ready to run miles and miles? I’m only 15 years old, does age means something?
Absolutely love the definition for endurance! Another great video - thanks! Combining this concept with altering perception of effort by knowing your race course (mentioned in one of your 10k videos I think 🤔) could be a game changer!
Dude help me I ran a 17:52 5K as a freshman in high school and i’m tryna break 17 now sophomore year but ima bitch and i don’t push past when i’m tired
I don't know what happened over the weekend but today I struggled to run a mile(but did) but seem to get better after a mile, it's like I hit a half mile wall and feel heavy. Not warming up enough, eat too much over the weekend, a mental issue?
I I don’t like going outside to run because well Um, I’m insecure so I don’t like it when I run pass houses with people looking at me if I’m running by myself.
here is a study that counters your #1 dont do post run nutrition tip about fruit. www.nutritiontactics.com/ different transportation. their absorbtion points are different. protein, glucose, fructose and salt are all important post run recovery.

Thanks team... nice...
Great video!!

Have you ever coached someone in OCR or Spartan races?
what camera do you use
My favorite quote when things get hard while running is:
*Mental toughness is finding fuel in an empty tank. *
Telling that to myself makes me think about why I run and how miserable I felt in times of injury. Always makes me feel so grateful for being able to run and works even after 30k...😂
I am tough enough, dont need to watch this to know, but if I can make myself stronger... WHY THE HELL NOT 😂😬
Great content
Thank you!
Awesome video!
Push ourselves 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
I don't know what happened over the weekend but today I struggled to run a mile(but did) but seem to get better after a mile, it's like I hit a half mile wall and feel heavy. Not warming up enough, eat too much over the weekend, a mental issue?
Thaaaaanx of you
I I don’t like going outside to run because well Um, I’m insecure so I don’t like it when I run pass houses with people looking at me if I’m running by myself.
Same with me, I think it gets better over time though. Keep at it and maybe you'll be less self-conscious:) (Ima try to as well)
I’m so discouraged with my running. I just can’t get pass my mental insecurity about not being a good long distance runner. Please help me !!!!
Comparing yourself to others isn’t helpful. Just work with where you are right now. Start within capacity and be consistent. We are all runners
I failed my APFT 😭 3.2 km run is killing meeeeee.
But there will be a retake tomorrow.
Needed this...because as soon as I feel a burn....I’m stopping lol
Yeah, I get it! Just go one step at a time, and try your best not to think much mre than that lol
Also is it me or does anyone else get there best time doing a track event for the first time?
Motivation is BS. Once you think “should I”It’s over
here is a study that counters your #1 dont do post run nutrition tip about fruit. www.nutritiontactics.com/
different transportation. their absorbtion points are different. protein, glucose, fructose and salt are all important post run recovery.
