James' entire explanation of Demons to Diamonds, "It's Demons to Diamonds!"
Not Demons AND Diamonds, IT'S DEMONS *2* DIAMONDS!!
Dont you mean DEMONS 2 DIE-MONDS
I love hes frenzy explanation at the beginning lol
9:28 He starts again: "...it's DEMONS - TO - DIAMONDS" :D
@PirateChest Yeah, AVGN took over a little while.
Next time someone loses at a game they have to land the plane with the Power Glove.
I like to see how James has been getting progessively better in video games with each passing video, I LIKE IT!
You two are responsible for the retro-gaming craze in a big way. Thank you!
Best part of the week is watching mike and james talk games been watching these guy since the begining
I remember this game since I was a kid, but that brings back memories. "Demons to Diamonds" was the game that I used to play all the time. Lots of fun.
4:33 James ''creamed'' Mike.
3lllllllllD~~~o (D- :)
"James is on the top and I'm on the bottom... and he creamed me!"
That's not how you make a rocket ship!
Lol gay sex
An unusual position for Mike.
Demons to Diamonds is pretty intense if you play it as a PvP game, but it's a bit dull 1-player.
The way James explains the game and his enthusiam is hilarious :D
I don't think it's implying the demons become diamonds, I think it's like an encyclopedia that covers topics from A to Z. This game covers the scope of everything that exists between demons and diamonds, which seemingly only includes lasers and skulls...and paddles.
You shoot the demons so hard they become burned TOAST! - or actually it turns them into a pile of coal, but the carbonizing effect is skipped, omitted entirely in the game, and the player automatically sees them turn to diamonds. DEMONS TO DIAMONDS!
Besides Warlords, this was my favorite Atari 2600 Paddle game!
"Is his name Dig?". I think it's more plausible that his name is Dug.
I never had a chance to play this game as Atari games were so minimal in our town.
James is acting AVGN again.
I had this game as a kid. I think that you have to shoot the demons before the other person, and avoid getting shot.
Demons to Diamonds Recharged would be awesome
I own this one too, no idea you could play it with multiple people!
You need to shoot the demons that match your color for the diamond to appear. If you hit the wrong one it becomes a skull.
I noticed that when red shoots a red demon it turns to a skull and vice versa
Imagic was the second best third party dev for the 2600 after Activision.
04:38 James at the top, I'm the bottom, and he creamed me. Lol!
James was completely ready to turn that game off at the end, haha.
The guy in dig dug is Taizo Horizon
Love you guys!!!
Can you play it with a regular atari controller or sega genesis controller?
Did Mike Matei just take credit for starting AVGN?
Cinemassacre James when is your Halloween angry video game nerd episode
James PLZ Clash of the Monsters on Halloween J&M
What is the name of this game again?
2.12 James fully unleashing his Angry Videogame Nerd persona all of a sudden
"James is the top, I'm the bottom and he creamed me, that's great." - Mike Mattei 2018
i heard that too
James sounds so enthusiastic to play this game. So wholesome.
far superior to mikes constant sewer humour
It sounded like the Atari was having a stroke at the beginning.
Or maybe, when a person has a stroke they act like an Atari.
Demons to Diamonds sounds like a missing Dio album.
Or Gorillaz
I had this game as a kid too, but I knew how to play... when you shoot the demons that are the same color as your player, they spawn diamonds that go across the screen. When you shoot the demons that are the wrong color, they turn into those skeletons that shoot at you. the demons switch colors when they bounce off the walls. Still, if you're having fun, you're not playing it wrong, even if you're playing it wrong. :)
Michel S Best comment :)
@@elmagnificodep Yes you do and, yes, you can destroy the skulls
I'm surprised James and Mike didn't catch that.
Totally. This is hard to watch lol. They aren't even advancing through the levels lol.
Each time you beat a level you get a cool screen flash effect. They never even beat level 1.
Eventually the skulls start moving. It's a co op game even more than a vs game.
Never played this game. I didn't have an Atari, when I went to college I had my old NES. I'm around James age, I'm 37 now . Video games in that era were insane. I went from Commodore 64 to NES. My Dad played C64 with me, but he committed suicide when I was 5. I got the NES when I was 7 and got Mario and Legend of Zelda. Ahhhh Nostalgia... There you go a Halloween story for the young ones and this one is true. Happy Halloween. 🎃
Lost my pops in front of me but makes u appreciate games like this good times. Plus that stuff my friend makes u stronger and a better person than most. Hope u r family is well
@@CountryRoadist doesn't really matter either way dead is dead and I'm alive, and in fact older than he was when he died.
@@frankjoeson1138 True , though considering he showed me the movie Alien when I was 3 he wasn't exactly father of the year, but the 80s were a crazy time period
(Oh jeez im really sorry ta hear that.) nothin scaryer than what's in your own head i guess. (Speakin from past experience here) Happy Halloween!
CountryRoadist You're an AAAAAAAASSSS! Yes make sure you hear it like James says it.
You can't have dug until you first dig
Make sense.
You also can't dig until you send Doug to dig.
I dig Doug.
dig dug
You gotta know what a crumpet is to understand cricket!
I never knew how to play this all the time I had it growing up, and right now I realized that you're meant to only shoot demons that are your color...otherwise they turn into the shot-blocking skulls :/
Yay for having 2nd-hand games with no manuals. Same explanation for how I had *no idea* how to get any progress in Raiders Of The Lost Ark, since you needed to use a 2nd joystick for inventory management, and I didn't find that out until I purposely bought the manual at a pawn shop like 6 years after the game came out :/
JLsoft Shot-blocking Skulls would make an excellent band name.
This is so hard to watch after I knew how this game is played.
well you shouldn't have skipped the tutorial-scenes :D
uhm...i forgive you?
That moment James turns into an excited, out of breath 8-year-old kid.
'WARLORDS' was the best multiplayer paddle game in the Atari library. Get two more people and play that badass game.
yep had that game too killed many paddles lol
Video Olympics was always a favorite of mine for 4-player action.
"James is the top, im the bottom and james creamed me." LMAO
"I'm on the top and Mike's on the bottom" - James 2018
"I creamed you!"
That reminds me of another thing:
"Let me be a little more aggressive since I'm on the top." -James 2014
James telling us what has been obvious since, like, 2013
I got the Demons to Diamonds plus the controllers in 1987 for 10 dollars it was the best Atari game I owned, immediately. Great single player too
Great episode guys! I love it when you just mess around with games like this and tell stories.
The diamond only shows when you hit the demon that is your color. otherwise it becomes a scull, is it that hard to notice?
It is when the only person with knowledge about the game at all explains it and doesn't understand it completely. He even admits to not knowing how it really works. Considering he's just jamming back and forth spamming the shoot button, it's no surprise really.
I dunno, if we can see it just by watching them play it...
Scull huh? Scull...
I think there should be angry video game nerd videos called AVGN Paradox where the Angry Video Game Nerd reviews good games like Mario Brothers and gives it some praise but also point out a few annoyances
he did that already
Demons created this game, in hope of earning some Diamonds when selling it.
You guys are killing me. You are supposed to shoot the ones that are the same color as you to get the diamond. When you shoot the wrong color, they turn into the skulls
Nothing beats atari sounds
Mike: why do the demons turn into diamonds? Me: cuz atari 2600 couldn't make circles after you killed them
Now THATS what im talking about! Upload in the first hour of monday!
I love when James tries to explain what's going on. Kinda throws me back to watching "El Chavo del 8" whenever he got excited about a game and stuff.
🎶Have you played Atari today?🎶
Is that a ccr reference?
2:20 is this game the prequel to the craziness of attack of the mutant penguins for the Jaguar? lol
So to win, all you need to do is score rush early and then intentionally lose all your lives?
Early 80's game design at its finest.
haha ya I guess that's right. Then again if both players actually know what they are doing it's probably pretty hard to accomplish that. So strategically losing your lives and picking the right moment to expend your last life when your in the lead is kind of part of the game.
the bet should have been that if James lost, he would have to try to beat Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde on the nes cause Mike already did it, but if Mike would to lose, not only would he have to play Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde on the nes again and try to beat it, but he would have to play it with the power glove and also get the best ending ha ha ha ha ha ha! 🤣
I had this but it didn’t work on my Coleco Vision Atari Adapter (the only one that didn’t for me for some reason). So, I barely got to play it.
I'm not sure, guys, but I suspect that's Demons... to Diamonds.
Gotta say, "Demons to Diamonds" sounds like a hell of a get-rich-quick scheme.
The skulls look like the Nintendo Virtual Boy. It's like a video game prophecy. A console that looks like Atari demon skulls is doomed.
shoot a demon of your color = diamond
shoot a demon of the opposite color = skull
it' s not that hard to understand
M- What about Dig Dug?
J - Dig Dug well that's..that's something too...
... weren't you all going to play the original famicon version of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde? Too much trauma?
I believe you two are a big part of why retro is making a comeback.
I missed out on paddle controllers, got one for my DS (only three supported games) and I never knew how much fun they were before that. Still to this day haven't tried the paddle controller for the 2600.
Love Atari 2600 and James & Mike Mondays fun game choice. Nice to see Atari games played on this series again.
2600 and Nes episodes are so cool :-)
Well I think atari videos are the worst.. But at least it makes someone happy
Yeah of course! James & Mike seems happy too.
How come this game hasn't been made into a movie? it's a great story!!
You can also select a later game where you can shoot each other. I played way too much of this game.
I used to collect atari games pre internet in grade school and this and Enduro were two games I never knew exsisted. Wasnt in any atari catalog i acquired nor in any book i checked out at the library. I was too young for atari when it was new so when I started collecting again a couple years ago these games were completely new to me.
James is the top and Mike's the bottom... For some reason I thought it would be the other way around.
it didn´t sound... right...
Obviously James is the top. I mean compare their levels of confidence. Mike is the needy sounding one “if I didn’t do x avgn wouldn’t have happened” waaaaa
@Chinhippy In gaming period
Sounds like a Ronnie James Dio song...RIP RJD
Is it sad that this actually looks like fun to me?!?!?!
You need 2 have 2 people over for WARLORDS...that would be a great episode
Amazing that a game as simple as this could be very interesting.
Kids today don't know the struggle...
The Dig Dug character actually has a real name. He was given the name Taizo Hori in specific games that aren't actually Dig Dug and he is also the father of the main character of Mr Driller series' Susumu Hori. Apparently, Namco also states he was married to Tobi Masuyo, which is beyond improbable but completely true.
When is the next 'Long Game' going to be? Like super metroid and Link to the past. I think majoras mask would be a great one but would take so many hours that youd be filming for all eternity
Demons to Diamonds... both can be found deep under the Earth's surface.
Or according to James, "YOU SHOOT THE DEMONS AND THEN THEY TURN INTO DIAMONDS! THEN YOU SHOOT THE DIAMONDS AND THEN YOU SHOOT MORE DEMONS!"
I played this game, too.
You shoot YOUR COLOR demon to make a diamond, and then shoot the diamond for more points.
If you shoot the other color demon, it turns into a skull that shoots you.
Honestly how hard is that to know and understand?
You know what I never even played this game before, but I just liked to say the name Demons to Diamonds!!! After I saw it in one of those pamphlets.
James and his Atari games are like Proust with a box of madeleines. AND THERES DEMONS AND THEN THE DIAMONDS COME OUT AND THE SKULLS AND YOU SHOOT AND
"James is the top, I'm the bottom, and he creamed me."
Atari was mostly run by technicians not game designers. That pretty much explains this game.
I think this might be the first time I've actually seen Mike Matei... I've seen his name on AVGN videos for years, but I think this is honestly the first time I've seen him. I kind of assumed the guitar guy that did the old AVGN song and was in a bunch of videos was Mike, but a 2-second Google search tells me that it is Kyle Justin. All this time I've been wrong...
I remember when I used to think it was "Dig Doug", so I thought the character was called Doug. That was before I could even read.
It could be that the demons transform into diamonds, which was what James and Mike seem to think it means.
What I think it means is the bet is demons to diamonds, i.e. dollars to doughnuts. What the bet is and how they captured demons and why they are betting them against diamonds are other questions entirely.
I don't know why, but Atari games give me this worm cozy feel.
AVGN, the secret to a perfectly balanced breakfast!
when I was at the university of Illinois in Chicago they had a written essay for class placement. the subject was. "there is a person on a bridge threatening suicide. talk the person down from jumping." I was pissed and wrote a bunch of complaints and ended with because I am writing the essay I walked away and the jumper walked home with out jumping off the bridge."
Demon attack and the Smurf are my two fave Atari games
this was one of my favorite Atari games too
Well, take some of Ys games, for instance, the Demons and Monsters turn into diamonds, opal, rubies, emeralds, etc. Maybe the creators of both games wanted to show that there's some beauty essence even within the grotesque. And maybe this was all crap.
The game has two sort of enemies. One is red and another is blue the enemies the blue enemies can only be killed by the blue player and the red enemies can only be killed by the red player and the dimonds can be pickup by anyone
They should have a competition of playing 2 games at once. They both play a 1v1 game, loser has to play through a screen or level of another game. Once that's done, they go back to the 1v1 and repeat until the 2nd game is completed.
Why do demons turn into diamonds? Because cocaine. It was the 80's. What the hell did you expect?
I have that Pac-Man shirt!
You've hopefully figured it out by now but it seems like you need to shoot the demons that match your ships color...
Fun fack: the reasin D&D is called that is, Gygax took every work he could think of related to the game, and wud stick to of 'em together at random until he gottid one he liked.
Have the nerd review Ninja Golf on Atari 7800. That could be hysterical.
Me and my sister played this game when we were kids. It was so cool.
