Gotta love Mike! He's funny and often more knowledgeable than James on them old games. James and Mike are the best lets play duo ever! Keep up the good work guys!
Even simultaneous......you can change the color on every line. So displaying all 256 colors at the same time was no problem. Even changing the color in the mid of the scanline was possible.
I find it interesting that at the beginning of the current "game collector" craze, Atari games topped the list of most expensive and sought after video games (the rare ones) and the last few years interest has dropped off and the prices have fallen dramatically. Now the NES seems to hold the title for most expensive rare games (little Samson, Bandai Stadium Events, etc). I wonder if it has to do with the timing of the generations of gamers who grew up with the systems coming of age and having more disposable income to collect games from their childhood. IE, gamers who grew up in the late 70's/early 80's were getting settled into their career's in the early/mid 2000's looking to recapture memories from their youth. Flash forward 8-10 years and now its time for the NES to have its time in the spotlight with those in their late 20's early 30's who remember the NES growing up in the late 80's/early 90's. I guess time will tell in another 7-10 years if the SNES and Genesis libraries start to dramatically appreciate in value. Some rares have already begun to but not to the level of rare NES or Atari games have in the past (to my knowledge at least). Though its possible that as the newer generation games become older, they are not as rare comparatively due to larger print runs ?
For those wondering about the movie, according to his last update it is entering post-production. As for the release date, he's hoping to have it out for Christmas 2013, the 30th anniversary of E.T. on the Atari 2600.
The pacman atari game has an interesting history. Apparently, they were rushing the developers to meet a release date. When the head of the project heard that they had a prototype, he decided to not wait until they finished the game, and just sell the prototype as the finished version.
Arcade Asteroids was a early vector game, so what it lacked in colours, it made up for in smooth movement. Everything was drawn like the Vectrex. 2600 Asteroids used sprites, so the game objects - the ship, for example - doesn't rotate smoothly, but yeah. Limits of the system.
You'd be surprised how hard it was on the 2600. The extent of the system's capabilities was a single background layer and 5 tiny objects, so to create the illusion of more they'd have to manually make their code sync with the TV's refresh rate, down to the pixel. I'm a decent programmer and the things they managed to do back then just blow my mind.
Regarding 2600 Pac-man's bug, the closest I've found is getting touched by a ghost when you're going through the north/south "exit". You'll hear the "death sound" as you move off the screen, nothing seems to be happening, and then Pac-man comes out the other side while he finishes dying. It's really weird.
This video brought me back guys. I even remember doing the vertical flying on asteroids like that where the ship goes faster and faster. My dad was a nerd too luckily so my brother and I had all these games to play on the Atari home computer...3200xe I think.
creeper2112 I thought it was just randomness myself. They talked about a game that didn't exist and said it was brilliant. I thought it was the same thing for the Left handed Mattress maker documentary. Saying it was great even though it didn't exist.
Still play Frog n' flies once in a while on my Mame cabinet, great simple game that can get really competitive among a few friends and some beers. ;) The arcade version of Jungle Hunt is a great game and yes you can see he has a knife to shank those gators with.(16:50)
As a kid, when I was playing Smurfs for the Atari 2600 I really saw the smurfs there. It's magical what your imagination is when you're a kid. Many, many years after I played it on an emulator and... well, the "graphics" were not quite like I remembered. But I guess that's the magic of the childhood.
The Pac Man they released was a prototype. They released it as it was with a huge marketing campaign, it pissed the programmer off, a great deal. You can read about it in The Ultimate History of Video Games.
I remember I had a Atari with the casettes. My dad played it and had a record, then when my bro has beaten that record my dad was playing through the whole night just to beat this record :) he did it :)
Yknow James, when I played PacMan on Atari when I was 4 [I'm 16 now] I asked my dad why he collects the lil squares, he said that PacMan really loves gum. XD
Shoga san Thanks. But really, it is called the Gond. In the Vanguard from the arcades, the lettering on the top said "Vanguard: Test Your Skills To Defeat The Mighty Gond" So, therefor, it is Gond not God. And yeah, my picture is pretty cool, isn't it?
These games really rocked for the temporary retro gaming age , the concept of these sort of games are already seen coming back in the contemporary for the coolness of them , just with an addition of modern architecture design and newly cool concepts , these games were inspiration for all.
Dude James I've been watching a lot of your older episodes and I found that you love 80s cartoons because of the gore and violence. Believe me you would love this newer show called "Sym-biotic Titan". It's amazzzzzzing , action packed, has great characters, story, and development. It's a masterpiece, trust me you will not be disappointed
Yes!! The Jungle Hunt riff is probably my favorite on any pre-Nintendo consoles. After Nintendo it is the Lil Mac running through the City riff, in Mike Tyson punch out.
James is the one who makes the AVGN videos. Mike make glitch videos. Anyway. I thought this was interesting. Gives a real insight into the gameing eras of yester year. Can't wait for more!
I feel like Mike got that part wrong. I am almost 100% sure that "Mario Bros" was originally released for the Famicom and then shortly after that was released for the Atari 2600.
frozenaorta Never mind, I did some research. It seems that its normal to keep your shoes on inside in US, but in here (finland) I and anyone else takes their off when they come outside
nesfan8 I go barefoot inside the house too, and I live in the US. It actually is better for your feet if you go bare foot a lot. It helps prevent flat feet.
+nesfan8 Probably because they're in the basement. Ever heard of anyone walking in the basement barefooted? (Even though the basement looks surprisingly tidy)
I don't agree with mike on pacman being all that hard to port to the Atari 2600. I could get over it looking and playing like shit if the level design was atleast good but its just plain weird, anyone else agree?
You just wrap your hand around an alligator’s jaws and keep punching it, and naught it can do to you; because the muscles that open an alligator’s jaws are actually really weak. I don’t know, if that works on crocodiles, too.

I thoroughly enjoy just watching these two having a genuinely good time.
Inky, pinky, blinky, and Clyde always reminded me of my dad and his brothers: Larry, Terry, Jerry, Gerry, and Daryl.
@James Lakeman well no one told that to poor uncle Daryl, cause he's been getting shit for years lol
Mike doing his Joker impression when mentioning "Jungle Hunt" put a smile on my face for sure. :D
Mario on Atari with Sega genesis controller=mind blown
"No wonder Luther could beat it!" Oh my freakin' xD

You know what is interesting? Atari 2600 is capable of more colours than NES (Total, not simultaneous)
Even simultaneous......you can change the color on every line. So displaying all 256 colors at the same time was no problem. Even changing the color in the mid of the scanline was possible.
I gotta say I didn't know this. And I genuinely appreciate you guys' knowledge on this.
15:42 EPIC JOKER FLASHBACK! Mike rulez!
13:47 Mikes reaction to what just happened there is priceless.
I think that Inky, Pinky, Blinky, and Clyde, has to be one of the shortest comedic statements ever.
Adyman I get it....
...I don't get it
The opening "Luther Destroys the Gond!" was way too damn funny
I love Mike's bit as the Joker about Jungle Hunt. Good times.

I'm from 9 years in the future and you're 100% correct
The more i watch, the more i realize how much James needs Mike.
Man this feels nostalgic to watch this again after a long
Jungle Hunt sounds fucking awesome. Gameplay and literally in sound.
Not only sounds, but it's really fucking awesome. :) it's my favourite Atari 2600 game along with Asteroids and Pitfall.
I just watched that vanguard commercial and I'm pretty sure they ask, "who destroys the GOND?" not God.
+Phil V you are correct it is Gond
then what the fuck is a gond?
aawww a teal kirbyyy ^^
Hexagonal Milo 10 A Gond is defined as, "that thing that Luther destroyed".
We will never know because Luther destroyed iy
13:46 Look at Mike's face when he is interrupted!
”Dodge ’em” really is the original ”Minecart Mayhem” (in DK64).
At 17:37, the music reminds me of a slowed down disco bass line. Love it!

I used to play River Raid all the time! Two other favorites of mine were Zaxxon and BC's Quest for Tires.
As a photographer I totally got James’s Vanguard tripod joke.
The Gond, not The God was much harder to kill in the arcade version.
What about the God though. Was he easy to kill?
Rick Occulus Nietzsche did it.
Not really
Easily one of the best episodes of James and Mike Mondays
The pacman atari game has an interesting history. Apparently, they were rushing the developers to meet a release date. When the head of the project heard that they had a prototype, he decided to not wait until they finished the game, and just sell the prototype as the finished version.

"Inky, Blinky, Pinkie and Clyde! We're the marshmallows, who hide inside! Of Pac-Man Cereal..." - some corner of my memory
Fun fact: In Jungle Hunt the reason a lot of people fail at knifing the alligators is because you can’t hit them while their mouth is open
I love seeing you guys play the game and talk. You guys are amazing together.
Luther kills the GOND. That E is energy, and it gives you temporary invincibility.
The Asteroids Arcade cabinet is actually vector-based, so everything is monochrome.
There was a spiritual successor to Frogs And Flies in development called Frog Pond. It got canned, but it comes with the Flashback consoles.
You'd be surprised how hard it was on the 2600. The extent of the system's capabilities was a single background layer and 5 tiny objects, so to create the illusion of more they'd have to manually make their code sync with the TV's refresh rate, down to the pixel.
