  • We have the Oculus Quest! After a week of testing its inside-out tracking, graphical performance, and a selection of its launch games, we review the Oculus Quest standalone virtual reality headset. Let's go in-depth with how its passthrough camera system works, guardian setup, and the quality of experiences on this game-changer for VR.
Correction: the third-party corrective lenses for the Oculus Go do in fact work in the Quest, after you remove the plastic bezels around each lens. We regret the error.

It reminds me of old consoles, when developers had to think hard to optimize their code. Today games come out unfinished and not optimized because "we got the power". VR opens a new way of making video games and like in its first years, we're going to need, again, to think differently and be creative with what we have. This is not a limitation, this is a path to more technical creativity.

@@UnityAshie Quest will run games that put more stress on the processor and I think the issue might not necessarily be overheating but rather battery getting really hot as it is charging and powering the system at the same time. High temperatures degrade the battery much faster and decreases its life span. The same reason why you shouldn't charge and use your smartphone at the same time or at least not use it for heavy tasks during charging.

Jeremy, I talked to the people who made Dead and Buried Arena at OC5 and they said the main change was just toggling off the guardian size restrictions. It sounds like it was still normal Insight doing all the heavy lifting of positional tracking, with the main custom part just being a server that kept track of all the co-located player positions.
Talking to her, it sounded like the boundary size restriction was definitely something that would exist for launch, but they hinted a bit at possibly increasing that max size as they have more time to work on things throughout the headset's life cycle.

  • @kobaltblueknight
    @kobaltblueknight 5 лет назад +2

My guess with that arena sized demo Facebook showed off months ago, is that arena mode is a LAN feature only available when connecting multiple headsets together over a local network. Their cameras work together to create the much larger arena to play in.

This will certainly be a factor in which model I purchase.
We also have to account for the fact that 64GB is actually 51GB after system OS and preinstalled apps are in place.

10/10 Review Video. That said, the product seems like the first PC game where everyone was sooooo excited that you are able to hold a device and click something and see it on the screen and it is you that controls the movement. People forget....So I am not interested in this, but rather can’t wait for 5-10 yrs when a person will be scanned, whole body, and your exact body configuration will be detected wirelessly. The controllers will be a glove of sort and grabbing a gun could be a cheap plastic rifle with a small sensor and you play while holding the gun and not pressing a controller that is very similar to the games you see on tv and control with wireless controllers. But the ability to feel a rifle, pistols, boxing gloves, Plastic tennis racket etc and the ability to play in a gym and with a huge play area in a real life multiplayer experience, will be amazing. It will be like playing paintball but instead you will be somewhere on a different planet with your buddies shooting monsters and talking through a headset while other people playing with you are in the game and recognized so that you don’t run into each other. And that is just a small improvement to what will be available in 20 yrs. Remember, if someone told us 20 yrs ago, when we had cheap flip phones with no camera, that our phones will have a quad core processor and will work faster online than any computer or lap top, as we will watch HD resolution movies on it and be able to play game awhile moving the phone and ask SIRI questions about almost anything....we would think that person needs to be mentally examined. So think what this would be like in your dreams and most likely that is what it will be and not our reality based imagination since our current reality isn’t able to imagine something that we think is not possible. Just like a electric car to go 0-60mph in less than 3 seconds would be impossible to imagine 20 yrs ago. Back then the drag race cars with 1200 horse power engines, would gon0-60 in over 3 seconds and that was considered a rocket in a car built just to go straight and had massive tires with parachutes to help stop the car since the breakers were not good enough...Your dream or imagination of what will not be possible, will be accepted as normal in a very short time. Good and scary things will come with all technological advances

I agree 100%. And this reminds me a lot of the movie Player 1, except that the movie goes too far about how much the game will take up of everyone’s life. It might be similar as far as the experience, but it will be ok expensive for people to have a moving floor in every direction and be able to jump and do a flip or whatever....It will be a game but at one point in time it will be used in the business world. Having a meeting while your body is perfectly scanned and your gestures and high definition view will make it possible for people to have meetings with political figures without the risk of danger. Same might apply for the criminals and big drug deals. The law will change and a game video might be used as the only evidence if they can prove that it was actually the user that arranged the big purchase of whatever illegal product or service....It will be great and horrible. Catching criminals will be harder for s long time until the laws change. Trust can catch the mid level guys who have to personally be at the location where the product is but the big bosses won’t ever have to be anywhere in person in regards to their high level criminal empires....we will see but anything great has always been used for great evil...

I would probably buy the Quest in a heartbeat if there was just a way to play all my currently owned PC Rift games on it somehow, even if it means playing those particular games with the headset tethered or whatever. But I really can't afford to buy the headset and then have to purchase a load of games again, and it's not ideal if I have to play cut-down versions of the games I already own for PC VR when using the Quest either, or miss out on some new and high-end PC VR games entirely. Because without those games I'm not exactly sure why it's worth me getting one when I already have the Rift, even as much as the simplicity of setup and the portability of it is such an attractive feature.

This thing is kind of like the Nintendo Switch of VR headsets. Not as powerful as the competition, but has enough unique benefits to make it worth owning. The comparison kind of breaks down when you compare pricing though. The Quest VR is a much better value relative to its competition. PC VR is so much more expensive and the only thing you lose is higher quality graphics. But the actual resolution is super crisp and the refresh rate is more than fast enough. And tracking works extremely well, not accounting for certain areas where the cameras don't see the controllers. I really think they should have tried to put higher quality accelerometers and gyroscopes in the these controllers. In any case, for me personally, I don't need graphically impressive games in order to have fun in VR. I just want games that let me interact with 3D environments in fun ways. Hopefully developers will continue putting lots more games onto the Quest. At this point, the only thing I'm really disappointed about is the lack of an SD card slot ($100 for another 64 GB? Really? What is this, an iPhone?) and the short battery life. But the battery life is not bad all things considered. VR is not generally something you're going to be spending all day doing anyway. But part of me would have liked to see something closer to around four or five hours.
Also, I almost forgot that Nintendo has recently been tinkering with VR too, and mostly failing. Honestly, if they wanted to get into VR, they ought to just partner with Oculus and put some games on this thing. Why not? They're releasing games on mobile devices now. What's the difference?

I see people complaining about this and stating that it’s a waste of money because of its cpu and battery life limitations. I understand that clearly, as stated in the video, pc vr will ALWAYS run better than mobile vr, but for someone like me that doesn’t have the $1,500+ for a good pc and pc vr (and has to scrape up a ton of tips just to be able to afford the quest), this is still a great way to get into the world of vr. Obviously it’s not gonna be perfect, but it will be good enough. Everyone seems to be obsessed with perfection, but personally, I was always fine playing games on my cheap laptop at 30 FPS with my graphics at 720p. Vr is still in its early stages, and while the pc vr is like the GameCube, I still had a lot of fun with the Gameboy.

The best way to play high movement games where you do 360 turns and really feel mobile is Quest. Having my Rift S with ceiling tethers, you feel the tug of the tether as you move around, and if you attempt a few turns, the cord twists where you feel scared that the wire will snap. The quest masters freedom of movement, something that even the upcoming valve index at $1000 can not compete in as valve index still has a wire attached on it. If you dont need to turn 360, are not very mobile in your games and need the best graphics and framerates, get valve index. If you can deal with reduced graphics, no SteamVR store but want real freedom of movement, get the Quest. But be aware also, that the Quest loses tracking in the area right in front of your face, making first person shooters aiming downing the sight lose tracking sometimes.

VR will not die like 3D TV did as each generation will get better until it takes over from screen gaming.
But developers don't seem to have any idea of what makes the potential of VR so special.
They think every game has to be a frantic, kinetic cartoon.
The core value of VR is 'presence'. So 'atmosphere' is the main attraction and for atmosphere you don't need a frantic environment.
A still, slow moving player/environment where a player feels like they are truly in a place such as a creepy, echoey dungeon or cave. Or a Blade Runneresque dystopian street scene at night in pouring rain where the multiple, alien sounds of a futuristic bbzzare.
A VR experience is not so much about what you see but rather about what you feel.
The current crop of games and their devs seem to think all they have to do is take a Nintendo Wii experience and wrap it 360.
    Must do better.

Cool being wireless but I don't see any point for us Vive users to upgrade. 1) Step back on graphics on new device (are you kiding me? a 2 yr old hardware still beats the newest), 2) most of the Quest games already playable on Vive (most likely Vader Immortal will be playable in Revive), 3) no need for FBT for now since most games (except Vrchat) DOESN'T support it, 4) if you can't do outdoor under the sunlight, what's the point of wireless? mind as well keep in indoor and wired ( i have my vive cable go up to the ceiling so I never have any cable problem anyway and I also can do 360 rotation).
Therefore, I do predict there'll be a slight boost of sales in VR but not much

Here's what I want to know. You kind of addressed this, but not explicitly.
I use my Oculus Go for 360 and rectangular video content. I travel a lot for work, and LOVE watching movies in a huge virtual cinema instead of on my 10" tablet. I create and consume a bit of 360 content (for fun, no longer related to my work.)
The Go was absolutely unparalleled for this. The RGB stripe LCD had nearly zero screen door effect. How does the Quest's higher resolution pentile subpixel arrangement compare in this regard? In games and more interactive experiences, SDE mostly disappears on the Rift and Vive for me, but for video and 360 content it's horrible.
The ideal is that I get the Quest and give the Go to a kid who'd be overjoyed to have it. However, should I keep the Go for video and travel, and get a Quest just for games? Will I be dissatisfied with the Quest for video content?

US price $499 (£383) for the Oculus Quest 128GB.
UK price £499 ($650) for the same device.
Facebook is ripping off the UK public.

Mark Sugar one thing I learnt after going to NY is that American sites don’t include the additional tax price until the very end of checkout (in the UK it’s already added to the price at the start)
so the prices are actually a lot closer than you first think

I'm sure this has absolutely nothing to do with VAT and the like, and is entirely Mark Zuckerberg growing a mustache just so he can twirl it while laughing maniacly at the extra 0.003% boost in revenue that Facebook will get from bilking the brits. Revenge for colonialism is best served cold, and in comically small increments.

Just ordered mine on amazon and base price before VAT was 417, with 83 VAT. As said above no one in states will pay 499 they will get local sales tax on top. Had a qucik check and 499 US was about 385 GB so difference is only about 30 GBP. so about a 8% markup. Not insignificant but not as big as originally appeared. Biggest difference is UK VAT.

I love my HTC Vive and my Oculus Go, but clearly it's first-generation tech with a lot of room to grow. I'm very excited to see it evolve another step forward. It's going to be amazing to see where this goes over the next twenty years.

Are we able to stream our gameplay to a tv? That’s my favorite part about playing games like beat saber with friends, and watching what they do on the screen while they’re in the headset.

I want to be able to play AAA games on this thing. Games like GTA, Red Dead, Assassins Creed et al. That's the key if VR is going to be successful. There has to be content that people not just want to play but have to play. The current media content doesn't look that interesting to me. I want play a game like Cyberpunk 2077 and be fully immersed in the world and story in VR. I'm rooting for the Quest though and will probably pick one up.

Anthony McDade if you have the money for 128gb don’t miss that chance there is 50+ games at launch but there is of course going to be more games maybe pavlov and gorn

@@ashtro1763 Fair point. I have a PC that I am dreading on the limited space that I have for my games and applications. I'm thinking of honestly picking up the Rift S since I feel like I'll have a better experience compared to something that runs on a mobile processer. I'm waiting on more reviews though. Anyways, I appreciate your insight. I'm hoping to save soon for my first VR headset.

There will still be a little bit at that res, but it's low enough that you won't be worrying about it, especially once in motion. All new headsets are offering resolution roughly in this area now to minimise it.
