    I didn't have high expectations going into this one but this just proves when Moffat has time & doesn't have pressure on his shoulders. He writes master pieces. That was truly one of the best episodes we have had in the last five seasons. Made me feel like a child again tbh with how tense it was from start to finish. I felt Moffat gave Ncuti & Millie loads of good chemistry that didn't feel forced which is exactly what the new era needs. Dare I say this is somehow one of the best episodes of New Who aswell. If the show is to survive the writing needs to be held to this standard. Massive solid 9/10 from me.

      Good point about the pressure on him back when he was showrunner. I think doing Sherlock and Who at the same time must have been quite stressful.

      @@CulturePhilter I have to be honest, I didn’t think much of any of 13’s run, I didn’t appreciate the writing in any of her episodes, the characters always felt like cardboard cutouts and I truly don’t think the episodes we are experiencing now are comparable in any way to that entire run.

    "An acceptable level of violence" was actually something British Minister Reginald Maudling said about the Northern Ireland Troubles all the way back in 1971, so it's not just a modern reference. RTD and SM are both old enough to maybe remember that - and it plagued the conflict for decades afterwards. As Fallout says: War never changes...

    I'm camp "give him an episode every series, keep him the hell away from showrunning" with Moffat, and true to that, I thought this episode was tremendous!
    I think the series could have done with it being aired as episode two, tbh, just to show new viewers more of the variety that they can expect from Who, but hopefully it won't have made too much difference.
    Thanks for the review!

      I really like him as head-writer too… plotting out the direction of the series. I preferred his era of RTD1 BUT he’s less across EVERYTHING in the way Russell is. Russel is a real full on producer as well as head writer, he takes a view on everything going on with the brand including the publicity and Moffat mostly left that to other people and didn’t push for things in the same way.
      So I like Moffat’s arcs more but Russell is the better producer.

    This episode was soo needed, I do think this would have probably been a good second episode as it would help to introduce the musical aspect to the devils chord and the whole 6 months time jump would have probably fitted a little better in episode 3, Good review though Phil as always :) I absolutly love the pink and white tardis behind you!! The timeline issue is interesting. In Doctor Who unleashed for the Devils Chord someone on the crew refers to it as episode 2 while on set, so this makes it sound like it was always intended to be episode 2. It seems odd to have a 6 month time jump and then establish that Ruby hadn’t been to an alien planet before. I think these details will be important later in the season, I have no idea how, but it feels like they have deliberately been made so noticeable.

    • @CulturePhilter
      @CulturePhilter  2 месяца назад +1

      Huh. Guess it is deliberate then. I guess they have had lots of adventures in earths history or future and on space stations/ships then.

    • @Elwaves2925
      @Elwaves2925 2 месяца назад +2

      It may have been filmed as episode 2 but it could have been written as a later episode. It's an interesting point but ultimately doesn't mean much. I've heard the Devil's Chord was in the filming block with episode 6, so it'll be interesting to see if there's reference to anything in that. That could give more confirmation one way or the other.

    • @louwheezy13
      @louwheezy13 2 месяца назад +1

      @@Elwaves2925 True, I just think if there was a shuffle of the episode order after the writing was done it would have been so simple to change the line to something like January 2024 if they knew it was episode 2 by the time they shot it. It’s a small detail but its inclusion feels too deliberate.

    • @Elwaves2925
      @Elwaves2925 2 месяца назад

      @@louwheezy13 You could be right, none of us know right now, it's all speculation. I'll also add that you're reasoning about a change of writing could apply to the order we currently have. They had six months of travels and never landed on another planet once? Sure, it's possible but it's also seems highly unlikely. That could have easily been sorted too by writing changes during filming (or editing) by removing the reference to the time.
      There's also having two episodes with vaguely similar tones next to each other. They don't usually do that but again, it's nothing concrete.
      As I say, we might get a better idea later on, or we may not and it'll forever remain a discussion point.

    Susan Twist plays Susan Triad in the last episode. S. Triad is an anagram of TARDIS. Could it be when the Doctor duplicated the Tardis in a previous episode that somehow freed part of the essence of the Tardis and that has been shadowing him ever since?

    The song The Doctor sings is the Skye Boat Song, it was written in the 18th century and is about Bonnie Prince Charlie’s escape after Culloden. It’s also about the heroism of a woman called Flora MacDonald, who helped him escape.

    I think the going back to June 2024 in the last episode can be explained simply by the completion of the special effects were taking a bit longer than expected so the start date of the series was not yet set in stone when that episode was filmed. They probably aimed for a opening episode broadcast in June but they managed to squeeze it into May. If it does turned out to be the explanation they really should have re-shot that scene.

    This episode is definitely my favourite with Ncuti so far. The christmas one was fun but kind of empty, space babies was entertaining enough silly nothingness, the devils chord felt like it had the makings of a strong idea that was kind of whittled down until it became a little thin, and I really found the villain performance hard to stomach, super annoying, that let the episode down for me a bit. None of them I disliked, but they were all just sort of... mid? This one though was everything I like in a doctor who, small restricted setting, stripping things right back, high concept story, and with minimal stuff to spread things out over we could really have a good look at the characters. Loved the tone, it looked gorgeous, I can imagine this being my favourite of the season and if it's not then that means there's even better to come which would be great, either way I'm very happy with this one.

    I've been struggling since the anniversary specials and I wasn't going to carry on watching, except for this episode being written by Moffat. Glad I switched on. I'm a very old daughter, with a very old father... but the dynamic is the same. And it's the first time I've cried since the Moffat era. I was shocked by the "faith girl" comment... but that was resolved in the end by the Doctor saying "I may not like it, but I need it (faith)." The actress playing Mundy was fantastic... I'd only ever seen her in "Andor" before... So it would seem we have have something to look forward to in Season 2 as well. A great episode that really felt like Doctor Who. "Kiss, kiss."

    You had a late one there, Phil! That opening scene was straight out of the John Singer Sergeant painting "Gassed" - a line of blind-fold soldiers being led to triage stations in WW1. Art Deco here on YT just uploaded a great video about it. Gatwa is just stunning. Great writing, great inclusion of song and poetry, great jeopardy. And is the V (can't remember full name!) algorithm a future spin-off from Triad systems? Could this be Susan's legacy? An absolutely brilliant episode! The only very slight criticism I have, is that I was really looking forward to seeing Ruby have more agency and get some character moments beyond her being a walking mystery.. I wanted to see her take charge, have ideas of her own etc. But instead, besides the couple of moments she had in the first few minutes (insisting on handing the Doctor the "urn", and then going to shoot the gun to draw the ambulance away), she mostly just does what the Doctor tells her, before getting shot and being taken out of the later half of the story altogether. I guess maybe it's partially on me for expecting differently, it's just that so far I feel like we hadn't really gotten much from her in terms of a unique personality, and since the premise of the episode was that the Doctor couldn't move, I was expecting Ruby to be the main star of it, and have to make more tough decisions on her own which I would have loved to see.
    I also think that her moment of near-dying was only impactful due to the Doctor's reaction, not because I care about her as deeply as I did some past companions at similar points in their respective run, and that's kind of a shame. Yeah, I liked the snow and "next of kin" thing, but, it felt like just another mystery-box moment instead of an actual character beat, which I think shouldn't be the case when the companion is literally dying. Good news is, as far as I can tell next episode seems to be an actual Doctor-light episode and apparently one of RTD's finest, so, I'm really hoping Ruby will finally get some unique and interesting character traits/moments which will make me more attached for when she's next put in danger lol :)
    Also, I'm pretty sure you're right about the episode order shenanigans, cause yeah, this being Ruby's first alien planet made the whole 6 months time-jump even weirder.
    All that being said, I did enjoy all the moments we got with the Doctor, seeing him be so close to helpless, having to ask for help and unable to run, knowing that he's putting everyone at risk but seeing no way out for most of the episode, was seriously fantastic and very emotional. And in true Moffat fashion, the dialog was great and as you've said, Ncuti was incredible.
    Also, yes, the multiple references were a lot of fun (not only did 9 destroy the factories of Villengard in favour of a banana grove, but 12 and 1 then traveled back there in Twice Upon a Time - But, afaik this was our first time actually seeing their weapons used in a war, unless you consider seeing Jack and River use them lol). Oh, and the Church you were thinking of and couldn't remember the name of, was called Papal Mainframe, or quite literally Church of the Silence, mainly featured as you've said in A Good Man Goes to War and in Time of the Doctor.
    You're also right that the tension overall was amazing, I literally found myself holding my breath or actually gasping a couple of times, and near tears at a couple of points. And seeing Varada so early was a lovely surprise as well! I'm so curious about how they're going to explain away her return now lol.. But we have a while yet until we get there and find out.
    Thank you for another great review, and props for getting it out so quickly! BTW, did the kiddos watch this one with you, or is it too dark for them? Genuinely wondering if they liked it or found it boring, since there's a lot of dialog and not much physical action haha

    I loved it. Even though we knew the Doctor would be okay the buildup was still great. After the last two episodes I was hoping this was going to be darker and it delivered. As much as I love RTD's episodes, when I think back to his era it's Moffat's episodes that stand out to me first. The one thing I didn't care for was the soldier being killed immediately after declaring his secret love. That's happened before in DW and it's tired and boring. Still, best one so far but we haven't had many.
    The line about the alien planet confirms for me that The Devil's Chord was moved forward from a later slot. It'll be worth keeping an ear open during episode 6 and 7 because one of them was likely planned as episode 2.

Although I am not a big fan of musicals the end part when they say always a twist actually made me smile and it was kind of spectacular! It was on par with grease and that's Amazing! If I had a gripe for this episode it was how oddly childlike Mundy and her crush seemed. Do you like me? Do you think he likes me (to an actual child). It just seemed a bit too teenage crush to my liking. And then Splice kept on saying stuff like "where's my daddy, I want my daddy" that made her sound even younger than however old she is meant to be.. It's quite a small gripe as everything else was just so good. Tense, edge of your seat stuff, with emotional moments. Whilst it wasn't a solo (or near solo) outing, this was definitely Ncuti's 15th Doctor moment to shine.

    Hmm, not sure how I felt. On one hand, I loved the episode and the tension, wasn't expecting Ruby to be shot. I loved how the dad saved the day and his character was really good, along with Splice (yes dont shoot me i thought she was really good and the acting was fine from her). But on the other hand, a few things stopped me from it being my favourite, mainly Mundy and the extremely long opening, idk something about her character just annoyed me and I couldn't get my head around their relationship. Overall I would say 8.5 (9 if that character was a bit different), but the overall concepts of this episode I just love, I just felt the characters brought down the episode.

    This was not Moffats best by a long shot, and not even as good as Wild Blue Yonder imo. Its premise is cool but almost never does it take full advantage of it. There are some good moments for sure, but its all resolved instantly by the AI guy and the doctor didnt even have to do anything clever to fix it... I thought the point of the doctor being stuck meant he'd have to be more resourceful and clever than usual but he didn't. The emotional beats other than when Ruby got shot were also underwhelming. The romance was so bad... The child and her dad thing was also way too undercooked for how exaggerated the ending about him was. This felt like later Moffat unfortunately instead of earlier Moffat.

      Later Moffat you say? Like series 10 Moffat? That’s one of my favourite series so I’ll take that 😄
      But seriously, it’s cool you didn’t hell with this ep as much as me. Ever one has different tastes. I don’t mind how it was resolved, the Doctor was a part of that, it was his idea for the AI to enter the network through the ambulance, I don’t need the Doctor to be solely responsible for the win.

      For me the ending was just too easily solved for how much the concept of the doctor being trapped was built up. It just... Idk.
