    --
    They call you the human cannonball. Your act involves flying through rings of fire, bouncing through a trampoline course, and catching the trapezist in the grand finale. Today’s pre-flight test fails dramatically, and upon inspection, your cannon has clearly been sabotaged. Unfortunately, it’s too late to abort the launch. Can you fix it in time to catch the trapezist? Alex Rosenthal shows how.
    Lesson by Alex Rosenthal, directed by Igor Coric, Artrake Studio.
    This riddle is adapted from a puzzle that appears in Boris A. Kordemsky's The Moscow Puzzles

    The ringmaster have an invoice in the pocket with the name of the company that brought the energy cells, therefore he KNEW how many cells were supposed to be brought and how the builder did for the cannon to work, so for him it was easy to sabotage it.
    But it was indeed the Tamer that did the act, as in 0:43 is possible to see one of his missing shoulder things in the machine.
    Also, the Clown knew about it but tried to stop the Tamer; his flower release a yellow liquid and there's a small puddle to yellow liquid close to the Tamer's feet at 4:47.
    This is downright an Ace Attorney case lol

    You can also use normal logic to solve the "Who Sabotaged You?" Question:
    - The Clown is in love with the trapezist and was waiting for her with gifts after we solved the riddle, its pretty unlikely he would try to cause her death by tampering with a clearly dangerous act unless he was heartbroken, but he waiting for her with gifts shows us that clearly that wasnt the case.
    - The Ringleader while having a problematic opinion about the press and being show as greedy doesnt have a good motive to sabotage you because by doing so he would cause himself a lot of problems and ultimately lose a lot more of money than the press would give him (Causing the deaths of two of his actors would require him to find new actors to replace them, also while the police investigate the incident he will be forced to shut down the circus until they are done, and we arent even talking about the risks of being caught or even be placed as a suspect because being framed as a corrupt Ringleader who caused the deaths of two of his actors for money will make him go out of business pretty quickly).
    - Finally The Lion Tamer has a pretty solid motive: Wanting you out of the picture so he can be the main act, also by looking at the clues given in the video (specially the last part where he looks distressed at your survival) you can pretty much deduce he is the culprit, and he fears that you now are coming after him.

    The Lion Tamer sabotaged the cannon.
    Motive: Eliminating two other acts so he becomes the main attraction.
    Evidence: The Lion Tamer's outfit in both shots only shows a single tassel on his shoulders. At 1:43, a matching tassel to the one he's likely missing can be seen stuck between two of the energy cells. He's also the only one of the three whose demeanor and expression change after successfully thwarting the sabotage.
    The Clown has no motive to sabotage, as doing so would also hurt the trapezist he loves.
    The Ring Leader has no evidence. The invoice to the energy cell company is only circumstantial, not direct proof. As depicted, he appears in charge of the circus's money, which having the invoice only indicates that he likely had simply paid for the cells (as well at other equipment at the circus).

    • @Nazuiko
      @Nazuiko 2 года назад +4

      Correct; the Ringleader is guilty of sabotage, but only that he shortchanged the power cell supplier, which shouldve resulted in *too little* power to the cannon. But the pre-show test showed the power was too *HIGH*.

    • @Mirvana
      @Mirvana 2 года назад

      No.
      The invoice is still not actually definitive proof the Ring Leader is guilty/involved in the sabotage.
      There are dozens of non-nefarious reasons he could have that invoice.
      Maybe he ordered 30, but only 27 were delivered on time?
      Maybe he's also a math genius and knew 27 was enough, so he bought fewer to save money?
      Maybe he had no involvement at all in the order beyond paying the bill?
      Maybe its a months-old invoice that has nothing to do with these particular cells at all?
      The Ring Leader having the invoice is only proof of exactly one thing:
      "The Ring Leader has the invoice."

    • @corbsshas2811
      @corbsshas2811 2 года назад

      it's the tamer. the clown has an alibi of not wanting to hurt his love. the ringleader wouldn't just kill off his main act for a slight boost in money. he would be drowned in legal debt as well. someone else pointed out that a part of the tamer's uniform was in the machine. but if you look closely, there is also some yellow liquid in a puddle by the tamer. which is the very same as the liquid in the clown's flower sprayer. I think that it went down as such: the tamer wanted you dead. so he went over ad sabotaged the machine. the clown happened upon him sabotaging the cannon and fended him away. there are signs of a struggle between the two from the clown's liquid on the tamer, and a piece of the tamer's outfit inside the machine. (presumably knocked off during the fight). also earlier in the video it said that the inventor had too few power cells. this is why the ringleader had a receipt. so that they could put all the cells in later.

  • @zilelim813
    @zilelim813 Год назад +22

    Based on 0:40 and the rest of the video, the Lion Tamer probably did it. As said in the video, you and the trapezist would both die if the cannon still fired, and the clown wouldn’t want the Trapezist to die since he’s in love, so unlikely. Ringleader wants to sell more tickets (more profit) and thus wouldn’t want such a big accident to happen, since that’ll mean people running away and likely not buying his tickets anymore. Just by the process of elimination, the lion tamer did it. Plus he wants to be the main act, so maybe he’ll sabotage the main character to eliminate competition?

    • @hongbbl
      @hongbbl Год назад +1

      if the accident happens and the circus shutsdown, both the ringleader and the tamer would be affected. Just as how the ringleader would lose profit the tamer would lose his job if the circus shutsdown due to the deaths. If there is no act he couldn't be the main act. So the tamer has just as much of a reason to not kill us as the ringmaster. However the ringmaster insists that all press is good press so he is the only one with the mindset where causing this accident could lead to benefits.

I just made a spreadsheet with 16 cells for the boxes and set it up to calculate the totals for left, right, top, bottom, upper, lower, and overall, then entered numbers between 1 and 3 and moved them around until I got a solution (the 30-battery solution). Then I knew the other solution had to be either 27 or 33, so I moved the numbers some more until i found it.

    @MasterM23 2 года назад +27

    While the solution is obviously true, imo it was explained at bit more confusingly that it could have been. A single observation can drastically reduce the number from the getgo:
    11 per side, so 2 opposite sides have together 22 exactly, since they don't overlap. The remaining 4 chambers can now have between 1x4=4 and 3x4=12 in total, so the number is between 22+4=26 and 22+12=34.
    The number has to be divisible by 3, since the upper level has twice as many cells as the lower, so only 27, 30 and 33 remain.
    33 can be excluded the way that was explained in the video:
    33 means 22 in the upper level, 11 in the lower level.
    If a side had only 3s in the upper level, because any chamber has at least 1 cell and therefore the lower level contributes at least 3 cells to a side, we'd have 12 cells in a side. This means a side can't have all 3s in the upper level.
    But 22 allows only 2 chambers to only have 3 cells, so those 2s have to be at opposite corners in the upper level, because else there would be a side with three 3s. Now if all sides in the upper already had 3+3+2 cells, the lower can only have 1 cell per chamber, 8 in total, contradicting the first statement and making 33 impossible.
    We can check that 27 works (don't assume the problem has to work out, always check your reasoning, the instructions might have been faulty):
    3 2 3
    2 1
    3 1 3
    1 1 1
    1 1
    1 1 2

    There is a much simpler solution: the whole system can be partitioned in 2 sides plus 4 middle chambers. Each side has 11 cells and each chamber between 1 and 3 so the total is between 26 and 34, so 27, 30 or 33 since it has to be a multiple of 3. Then one only has to eliminate 33.

      I think the fact that the clown loves the trapeze artist is proof the clown is innocent. As much as he wants you out of the way, he probably still values the life of the trapeze artist too much to risk his life. The ringmaster would ultimately lose out on trying to use your death to promote the circus as he’d need to find a new headline act and/or replace two performers, and likely deal with a police investigation. The Lion Tamer is the only one who looks genuinely frustrated and would stand only to gain if he wasn’t caught. Plus one of his epaulettes is caught in the cannon.

    From there we have fewer values to brute force.

    Ngl I think the clown is the one who messed up the cannon.
    The ringleader wants to sell more tickets, and a cannon mess up wouldn't be well for the circus.
    The lion tamer wants to be the main act, but if they were the one making the cannon mess up, them the audience would probably put their eyes on the mess up, not the lion tamer. The clown is the one we have left. And it actually makes sense. The clown would sabotage the cannon, maybe even trying to kill the person being shot out the cannon, and that would help the clown get closer to the trapezist since in the video, its shown that the person being shot out of the cannon and the trapezist might love each other.
    Edit: i have no idea now

    I thought I had this one, but I messed up on one step: I assumed that since 24 was the max that could fit in one, and the upper level had twice as many cells as the lower level, the max he could have ordered to start with was 36--24 for the top, 12 for the bottom. Subtract three and round down since you can't have half a cell, and I got 20 for the top level and 10 for the lower level, 30 total. From there I arranged them (clockwise from upper left) 3-2-2-2-3-2-2-2 and 1-1-2-1-1-1-2-1, which was perfect for the "each side adds up to 11" rule.
    I didn't consider that he didn't order the absolute max he could fit to start with.

    Solving it just by trying to put the cells into the grid worked surprisingly well.
    It kind of seems like the last bit of given information (designed to work with n, must be made to work with n-3) is almost unnecessary as a result, except to disambiguate between what would otherwise be two valid solutions to the problem.
    My path to the solution was:
    1) can I get 11 on each side with 8 in the lower level and 16 in the upper? With at least one cell in every chamber, no, that gets me at most 10 on a side, not 11.
    2) How about 9 and 18? Oh I *can* place three cells to add one to each side (one in a corner along the lower level to add to two different sides, then the two edges along the top that don't share a side with that corner) and that's the lowest possible number, we're done here.

    • @steffahn
      @steffahn 2 года назад

      I think there's even more than one way to achieve 30 cells solutions, so it's more than two valid solutions that need to be disambiguated.

    The total number of cells must be at most #sides x 11 - #corner chambers x 1 = 4 x 11 - 8 x 1 = 36.
    The total number of cells must be at least #non overlapping sides x 11 + #non overlapping edge chambers x 1 = 2 x 11 + 4 x 1 = 26.
    The total number of cells must be a multiple of 3 because of rule 1, so we are left with these possibilities:
    27, 30, 33, 36
    If you try 36, then the upper level must get 24 cells and the lower level 12. To get 24 cells in the upper level, all chambers must be filled with 3 cells. This means that the upper sides all have 9 cells. Each chamber in the lower level must get at least 1 cell, so each lower side will have at least 3 cells. So all sides will be at least 12 cells, which contradicts rule 3.
    If you try 33, then you can remove two cells from the upper level. To prevent the issue we had with 36 cells, we have to make sure that all upper sides have 8 cells instead of 9 cells. This can only be done by removing the two cells from opposite corners, one cell from each corner. To not break rule 3, we have to fill all chambers in the lower level with a single cell, but then we break rule 1, because the lower level would only have 8 cells, while the upper level has 22 cells.
    So 27 and 30 are left, which means n = 30 and n - 3 = 27.

    1. Because each square has 1~3 energy cells and the bottom layer has half the cells in the top layer, start by: all squares in top layer with 2 cells each, all squares in bottom layer with 1 cell each
    2. This gives 9 cells per side, so we need at most 8 more energy cells (2 per side). Because the total number of cells should be 3n (2*bottom layer=top layer), we can try 3 and 6, and the answer to the riddle would have 3 additional cells.
    3. Rearrange cells so it fits the each side=11 cells rule.
