You’re a biologist on a mission to keep the rare honeybee Apis Trifecta from going extinct. The last 60 bees of the species are in your terrarium. You’ve already constructed wire frames of the appropriate size and shape. Now you need to turn them into working beehives by filling every hex with wax. Can you help the bees create producing hives? Dan Finkel shows how.

Yeah, it's really good. And so is the sound design. I honestly can't tell if the animations were stop motion or just really good CG and it's frankly blowing my mind.

Bee dad: Son, you've got a perfect report card, all B's!
Peter the Panda all Bee's!
You stole that joke from Bee Movie
It’s actually way simpler than it seems.
Step 1: Confirm the bees have green eyes
Step 2: Place one bee into a hive
Step 3: Have the bee transform the first hex, and then have it ask to be let out to the next hex, the bee must be allowed to do this because it has green eyes and is therefore allowed to leave
Step 4: Wait until it transforms all of the hives
Step 5: Place another bee in the hive to make a queen
Step 6: Repeat the process with each hive having a worker and a queen
Step 7: 60 original bees/ 2 bees in every hive= 30 hives
Hol up-
but what if the bees don't have green eyes

You will for sure
Looks dope so far
i love you both!
I feel like you already working on it
Long jorney .. fingers crossed
You can also arrange the bees in a spiral, you get the same number of hives but it's a bit more aesthetically pleasing and intuitive.
Step 1. Put three bees around the center hex with none of them in adjacent hexes
Step 2. From each of the first three bees, move two hexes out from the center, and then shift clockwise (or counter clockwise, doesn't matter) by one hex; that's where you'll put the next three bees.
Step 3. From each of the second set of three bees, move out and clockwise (or counter clockwise if that's what you did in step 2) to the corners of the hive, where the last three bees will go.
And there you go, a nice pretty bee spiral :)
How to solve the honeybee riddle:
Make sure they all have green eyes
And tell them that at least one of them has green eyes
How is this joke not dead yet
But they know, that one of the first three bees always lies, another always say truth, and the third says lies and truths randomly...

me with 2 brain cells left: well yes, but actually *no*
The animation is so fresh every time. I really never know what to expect.
There is another way of placing the bees. Place the 3 bees for the 7 hex hives the same way that we did and then place the remaining 6 in one of the 6 hexes of each side. I evaluated it that way. I tried going further than 54 hex hive but the question explicitly showed a 54 hex hive so...🤷
wow a comment actually about the solving, finally. I'm unsure on your explanation, i got answer by filling these hexes (numbered left to right, top to bottom). 1, 8, 23, 30, 35, 40, 42, 45, 57.

Most of the times, I don't even understand riddle but it's just soooo relaxing, captivating and mesmerizing to watch transitions, animations and sound effects of Ted ed videos.
I actually hit on a different pattern using a completely different approach to construction! I stuck my little triangle formation in the middle, and then three non-adjacent corners of the hive. I used the remaining 3 bees in the third 'ring' with 3-fold symmetry (play with it - there's essentially only 2 places they can go :) ) to complete.

The animation on this is phenomenal. Ted-Ed animators on another level.
I'm sure there's hundreds of ways to do this one. I did it with a rotationally symmetric pattern, starting with 3 around the center hex, and expanding from there.

The details in animation is just great.
The bees look like Advil...

The animation in this is amazing
Great problem! This is actually more difficult than I thought, and I did not get the optimal solution on my own.
My solution involves 12 bees in star configuration (leaving the center empty, 4 on each star edge), and it can do 4 hive as 60 / (12 + 1) = 4 with 8 remains (at this point, I kind of aware that it might not be the most efficient way as the 4 on the line are next to each other (and the fact that there are 8 remains, TedEd riddles are usually resolved in nice numbers and probably has no remains :)).
My thought process starts the same as the provided solution as I also realized 3 bees are required to populate the smallest 7 blocks hive. However, I did not realize the immutability of total perimeters. When I extend the 7-block case to larger hive, I just add 3 more on the corner (forming the star configuration) as I know a 120-degree angle is enough to populate a parallelogram that its two edges can span.
Anyway, the optimal solution really surprised me and is more elegant than I imaged.
The solution is very simple if you do math olympiads. This type of problem is incredibly standard and called a monovariant since the perimeter of the figure is non-increasing at every step. Also, your observation of the "immutability of total perimeter" is wrong because the perimeter can decrease.
I’m so glad you guys haven’t changed the narrator for these riddle videos.
