Finally, somebody who built their shelves properly. I have seen plenty of DIY videos on these and most just screw the wood pieces to each other using the fasteners to support the loads. Good job
I was just thinking the same thing! I am planning to do the exact same job in the spring. This is the way I will do it! Support blocks for the win!
I looked at many videos on how to make shelves in my garage for a beginner. Your video is my favorite. Simple and explained well.
I just finished building these shelves for my storage shed. Your video was a great help. For those needing a supply list, here is what I used for 3 shelves:
SHELF RAILS: 6-8 ft. 2 x 4 (2 for each shelf)
SHELF CROSS SUPPORTS: 15-21 inch 2 x 4 cross supports (5 for each shelf)
UPRIGHT SUPPORTS: 18-16 inch 2 x 4 upright supports (6 for each shelf)
UPRIGHT SUPPORT: 3-5 ft 2 x 4 long upright supports (I bought 2 10 ft. 2 x 4s and cut in half. I used the extra for the back filler pieces)
FILLER PIECES: Various sizes (mine varied between 14 3/8 to 14 5/8) to fill in behind shelves. I used 6 per shelf, so 18 total. I used some lumber scraps I had on hand and extra pieces I had left over.
SHELVES: 2-4 ft x 8 ft sheets of OSB (Oriented strand board) rip cut in half (Home Depot did it for free) to make the shelves which are 2 ft x 8 ft. You will have an extra shelf so I put the extra shelf on top for a later project. You could also use plywood, however it was nearly double the price of OSB.
SCREWS: 1 box of #9, 2.5 inch deck screws with star head drive ( a drill bit came in the box). The star head drive was much easier to drive the screws (better grip). You could use any screws made for decks or exterior use. I could not find 2.75 inch deck screws that's why I did not use them.
My total cost was approximately $106.00.
Thanks for posting this video.
So how many 2x4's were needed in total. I wana build this
What do you use to fasten the OSB to the frame?
@@brucenessler1802 I built these yesterday. The OSB is held in place by the risers (uptight support). I secured the top OSB by screwing it in in center of the outside shelf rails. Probably wasn't necessary.
@@alfonsocharles7555 18 - 2x4x8 studs.
@@mauriciojimenez4105 thank you!
Concise and well-edited. You put out a lot of information in 4-1/2 minutes. Well done, sir.
Absolutely!
Thanks for not making it "all about you" and just showing how to make the shelves. 2 thumbs up
The support blocks are perfect, much better than just relying on the screws through the legs
After watching hours of worthless videos of people and their lame shelves...yours is the best & easy. I was able to follow your plans & made a strong shelving system for my garage. Thanks!
I’m building 4 of theses and the price of 2x4’s is now $6 from $3 costing about $400.00. This is the correct way to build these type of shelves to handle any kind of load. Great job.
I just built these shelves in my new shed today! Same exact application and it went flawlessly. I used 2x3 instead of 2x4 boards and it is very solid. Thank you Mark!
I used your example to build shelves in my garage! Built two separate 8' long, 2' deep, 7' tall shelves, with a 6' wide x 2' deep workspace in the middle. SUPER STRONG! Thanks for the video!
Wonderful video. I'm in the process of building my shelves using this as a guide. It is slow going for me since I'm 67 and have a weak grip, but nearly halfway done and they look great so far! The first shelf is as solid as a rock. I'm having to pre-drill everything due to my weak grip, but that's ok too. I love the tip about filling between the studs with scrap 2x4's. Strange, I've watched this video multiple times and was never bothered by the music.
You are the only person that addressed building shelves with exposed studs. I am thinking about notching mine, but your idea is just fine for covering up the gaps behind the shelf. Thank you for doing this. Only video I have seen.
Just built this in my new 10’x12’ shed and worked perfectly. Thank you Mark for a great tutorial and thanks to the person who outlined the cut list in the comments. Very helpful!
After watching your video...a few times, I built these shelves in my garage. SOLID AS A ROCK! Love it. Thank you.
+Mike Mills thanks
this is my favorite RUclips how-to video of all
time!
Simplicity at it's best. Strong shelf supports. This is the same structure technique I used while building my shop work bench. Incredibly strong and easy to build. No fancy tools required. Great build.
+Lee Fuller thanks
When you want to store really heavy weight such as multiple 5 gallon cans of paint or oil, this is the way to go. Great job!
My husband and I just finished building these shelves yesterday. We love them! They are very strong! Thank you so much for sharing this great idea!
Very easy to build these shelves thanks to this video. Tweaked it a little bit for my own specific needs.
I built these shelves today. It was a lot of work to fill the gaps between the studs, but when I started loading the shelves, I quickly realized how much extra space I got from them. This was incredibly helpful, thanks so much for these instructions. I have a lot more room in my shed now and it looks very professional, as I am not a carpenter by trade. I'm a computer guy!
Finally a video I am looking for. proper frame support instead of relying on screws only.
You did some nice work on the shelves, but the best part is how well you told what you were doing. Wish more people doing these videos would follow your example.
Just built a couple of these with a few size modifications to fit my needs. VERY solid and highly recommend to anyone. Greatly appreciate you posting this video!!!
Build mine a few weeks ago. I needed 3 extra "legs" because mine are freestanding next to a steel studded wall. Great design and great instructional video. I just forwarded the link to a coworker. Thanks!
Wow, that's exactly what I was looking for. A nice solid shelf. Simple , Clear and Concise. Great job.
Best video on DIY shelf building I've seen yet. I have a 8'x12' shed that needs shelves and plan to use this video to complete the project and impress my wife. Thanks for the help.
+Charles B I'm glad it was helpful.
OMFG - use the speed square as a guide... that just blew my mind! So simple and obvious yet this is the first time I've ever considered doing that. I now feel stupid for years of avoiding my circular saw due to my exceptional ability to not cut a straight line. I know it was just an off-hand thought for you, but thanks anyway you just changed my shop life. 3:17
Awesome! It is the easiest and the most reliable shelves which I have seen.
Love the design-- strong, solid and simple and easy to build.
Thanks so much for that presentation I was just about to waste money on plastic shelves and came across your video. Thank you so much I owe you big.
+adinson8 I'm glad it was helpful for you. Good luck with your build. I'm sure you will think its worth the extra effort of building it yourself.
Mark Hanson - I'd Rather Make It Myself mark I finished my shelves and I was wondering about an email address that I can send you some pictures
Thanks Mark Hanson for your video on easy shelves. We made ours today exactly as you instructed and they turned our perfect. Thanks again.
Watched the video a ton of times. Slow learner. I built it with 20 inch shelves and it came out real nice with your design. There's a couple of errors I made, but I'll never tell where. I can also tell you putting those blockers in the wall is a pain! Great Video and very well explained. Thanks !
Excellent! Two great techniques stand out - using 2X4 as supports (not just screws) and putting 2X4 block at back of wall to keep things from falling out. Well thought out! Thank you; I will be using these ideas on some storage I will build for a shed.
I didn't put the blocks between the wall studs because they area all slightly warped and different widths on my house and it would have take forever to measure and cut for each one. MY solution is that anything that can fall between the studs goes into a larger container. If I find this is a problem, I will just buy some cheap and super thin plywood and cover the back of the shelves. Probably would only need to be a few inches tall to keep things from falling behind the shelf.
Carl Perkins I like the idea but screws are more then enough for anything as long as you know where to place the 2x4
Turning the shelves into a bed in the final seconds is what turns this from a good video to a GREAT video. :)
Brilliant! This is exactly what I need for shelves in my garage. Thank you for this video!
Wow probably the best and easiest video on building shelves for storage. Thanks
+Main Man Thanks!
Did no one else but me find the going for a nap part funny 😂
Built these today in my basement. It works great, super sturdy. Thanks!
Great to hear!
Hands down that’s the best one I seen yet
Your video was very good. I like the way you put the shelves together, it was smart so you didn't need someone else to hold things up.
Mark….I just finished building these shelves. I improvised a bit to suit my needs but I used your concepts. Your design was very simple to follow. The shelves are strong and sturdy and will hold anything I plan to store on them. Thanks for sharing your design.
When I bought my first home I used this design. Thank you Mark Hanson for your informational and awesome video. 😎👍
Rachel!! This is one of the coolest builds I've ever seen done on RUclips!! When my wife and I are finally blessed with a child we agreed we would do a Nautical Mediterranean theme for the nursery(as we are both Greek). I think this shelf would be bad ass to add to the nursery!!! Greetings from the other coast, Dirty Jersey out!!!! 2:42
Mark -- This past weekend I used your shelving system and made some great shelves in my garage for wood storage. I build mine a bit taller, but used the same system. Very, very strong and simple to build !! Thanks so much for posting this.
Great shelves, built one this weekend and it held a friend and me at the same time, finishing another today!
+Sean Sethi awesome! Glad you found the video helpful.
I built these in my old garage and can tell you from experience...THEY ARE STOUT AND CAN HANDLE A TON OF WEIGHT! Honestly was overkill for what I needed but damn if these are not built to withstand the apocalypse! Great Build! Great Video. Now to build new ones for the new garage!
This is the best. Simple cut, strong structure. Nice work.
Thank you! Great method! Love that you filled the spaced in the back too... good thinking!
Thanks for the tutorial! Your instructions helped me construct a very sturdy shelf unit in my garage that should hold anything I dare to put on it and will last for years to come. I made a few dimensional changes but other than that your video made it very simple for one person to construct. Thank you!
Great video; log enough to explain each step completely and still under 10 minutes!
Holy Crap! First video where someone didn't solely rely on the screws to hold the shelves up.

@Hallking78 One must crawl before he walks...
Yep. Could have been horrible to watch him try that nap if he hadn't put up those support boards.
You the man. This looks great.
Thanks for this. Now I know what and how to do this. First the garage. Then the shed. I like this method better for the much stronger weight capacity as opposed to others.
I really appreciate how the design of this method uses very uniform sizes for the cuts. So many plans will have 10 different size lengths of wood cuts, taking longer to prepare your pieces and more easily to get disorganized.
For someone thats not oo good at this stuff, your video got me over the hump! Thanks
so far this is the best video i am seeing the way you explain everything is good and the way you did it is piece of cake thank you
Thanks a million...i have seen lots of other videos, this got to be the best, tough as nail, very simplistic approach, just 2x4s, saw, screws, and plywoods. modify to your own need.
Thanks
Just simple, easy and strong
You are awesome
A calming and educational video, topped off with a little humour at the end. Good show Bro!
I spent about 3 weeks of searching the best way and by far this was the best and I copied it exactly and it came out amazing, great job man thanks.
Very helpful video. Thank you. I built mine yesterday and couldn't be more pleased how they turned out.
I'm glad it was helpful.
Never seen this before you make it so sturdy you are special thank you
Great vid. I’m making mine right now and using GRK screws 3 1/8 “ to make the cross pieces, they are self tapping so no pre-drilling needed.
Nice and simple and strong shelving. Good job and video was right to the point with no fluff.
+Ken Fett Thanks Ken!
Easy to understand and to follow. Fantastic.
thanks great video - to the point - (not like alot of other vid makers who waste time adding music not interested in or rambling endlessly) thanks
I built mine like it in 2003. Good storage up high too
I once built a dog house out of Aspen Board and never bothered to give it a coat of paint. Five years later I passed the dog house on to another dog lover as I no longer had a dog. I don't know how long it lasted after that point or if they painted it, but Aspen Board is pretty durable. 3:35
Thank you Mark ! This was very helpful and will never buy a Menards plastic shelving system again .
made a version of this today. 6 ft long two levels . top level I made a workbench top . LOVE it! on top I used two 3/4 pieces of very nice plywood. turned out great.
can't thank you enough for this video without it I wouldn't even attempt this on my own
+Pauly D I'm glad it helped.
I built these last weekend, they are perfect. The height is dead-on for bins, allows me to stack two on top with about a foot of clearance to the ceiling. It's also solid as a rock. Thanks for helping people with minimal skills like myself.
Thank you for this great video, I just built shelves based on this and it was easy, and they look great. First thing I've ever done like this, really went well. I had Home Depot cut all the wood for me, and I used deck screws (their suggestion). 8' shelves, and I plan to build another set or two. Thanks!
I'm glad this helped.
Great design, very strong, easy construction.
Just did something similar, but 4 shelves (about 7 feet tall) and 16 feet long. I built all the frames on one weekend and then cleared off the old shelves, tore them down and put together the new shelves. Probably took me about 24 hours (Two 12 hour days) on the hottest weekend this year. A few things to be aware of when doing this is to take note of how warped the walls and floor are. If you pre-cut the boards the way he did in this video, it will not go well.
What I did was temporarily screw a 2x4 into the studs to hold the shelf (make sure it is level). I then cut another board at approximately the height of the shelf to support the other end. Once I had the shelf propped up, I attached it to the wall. Next I used a clamp to position the first support 2x4 so that the shelf is perfectly level, then pre drilled and screwed it in, making sure the 2x4 is straight up and not leaning in any direction. After I repeated this for the next shelf, I removed the temporary 2x4 from the wall and measured and cut each of the support 2x4s that fit under the shelf. The bottom shelf is the hardest one to do. Once you have that one perfectly level, you can then install all your other supports and shelves the way he did in the video.
Another tip, if you are building a very long set of shelves is to do them in 8 foot segments and then screw the ends together for one long shelf. Also, if you don't have enough room so slide your shelf between the tall supports, put one of the supports on the end of the shelf temporarily, instead of the side, so you can put the shelf in from the front. Once you have all the shelves in, attach your support in it's final spot and remove the temporary support.
Finally, get some saw horses and build yourself a simple assembly table using 2x4s to support one of the MDF sheets. Building this many shelves on the floor is horrible for your back and knees (as I learned the hard way), and if your floor is very warped, it will make it very difficult to get all the cross pieces lined up correctly, which can lead to warped shelves .
If you don't have sawhorses, you can clamp a small piece of wood on either side of your cross braces to hold them in place against the longer 2x4s. Make sure each cross brace is square before attaching, or you will have problems later.
Hopefully this will help someone....
Really wish you had a video going through these steps :) Building shelves in my garage and having a tough time picturing exactly what you did.
ateaparrot - thanks! I actually ended up reading MAGA MAN's instructions above about 20 more times until it finally made sense :) All of my shelving is level - which is saying something since my walls and floor were in kinda rough shape.
Liked that you simply added a 2x4 support piece and not having to cut out parts of the sheet where the legs are,
The best video on diy heavy duty shelves...thank you
Simple and strong shelves. Good Job!
+eduardo mendoza Thanks.
Thank you for taking time to make this video. My husband don't have time to do. So this is exactly what I needed to do this project. I am using the exact storage boxes... This is awesome. THX
The whole shed really looks great, including the new bed :)
DarbinNotes Thanks. Might need some padding on it though. :)

here's a few suggestions on techniques to tidy up fast
Allow yourself 5 minutes every day to declutter
Give away something each day
Fill up a trash bag today!
Make a list of what to do this week.
Get four bags and sort everything into trash, give away, keep, or relocate.

Is true they look like bunk beds also
Just wanted to drop by and thank you for your informative video. This was the best design I could find here for sturdiness, and I built my version yesterday with success! 8 feet long and 4 shelves high in our 10x16 shed. Super pleased with the quality. Thanks!
Great job on this very easy to follow guide to building these shelves....my Father and I built these shelves this past weekend and they both turned out exactly as planned, we only modified the build by adding another shelf on top...Great Job !
Just built this one not tied into the wall. Awesome shelf and video!!
Thank you brother, I will do one as soon is tomorrow..great, finally my mess will be on place..
Very nice, very simple in design, very well explained. This was just what I was looking for.
Thanks.
@@IdRatherMakeItMyself-Net Used the same construction techniques but spaced first shelf 6 inches above garage floor. The foundation is flush with the wall on that side.
Great shelf design. The only thing I'd change is the distance between the shelves...mighty tight when you have all that extra room above and considering that they aren't that tall in the first place. I think I'd add about 6 inches to the height between each selve. Building a set right now. Thanks and nice work.
Best shelf making video. Good job Mark. Will make this for sure
I just got my shed and needed ideas for shelves and this video is awesome . Thanks :)
Great video - straight to the point with no messing about :) I have almost the exact same set up with my upstairs attic and will be using this to help me build storage up there, cheers mate
Thanks and I'm glad the video helped.
Well done. I will be using this method in my garage shelving that I will be building soon. Thanks for posting this video.
OMG - this is so great. I've been looking for a clear and concise way to create some for my bathroom. You Rock! 4:25
Easily the strongest 2x4 shelving unit on youtube. This is how we build aquarium stands and racks. My only question is the compression of the OSB - is it affected? Sure is easier than cutting out all those notches though!
Very nice, thanks for the video and instructions, very easy to hear and understand your comments.
Thanks.
Like the way you did that, seems simple and strong.
This is exactly what I was looking for.
Thanks.
I just finished my setup based off of this video tutorial. I had to make some edits based on my garage. There was a concrete barrier at the bottom of the wall... So my first layer took the longest. There was a furout causing me to use spacers (3/4") to level out the wall. Overall I am very happy with how it turned out.
I needed a nap! Great but you only took one and no revitalizing BEER! Great job. Thanks for the tips.
Best shelf build and tutorial I've seen on you tube! I have built many shelves similar to this but have never used the supporting studs. What an eye opener; of course I am not a carpenter. I love learning this trade. Thank you!
i have a bunch of old hollow core doors , your video inspired me to make a frame and instead of the OSB I will use the doors as the shelves.. i dont have anything super heavy to store just need somewhere to put plastic storage containers -- and I have a concrete block building but i think the same principle will work , thanks for your video
Awesome! I'm glad this video helped you.
Like the idea! Simple, economic and for a storage shelves it looks very nice.
+Marko Koncarevic Thanks!
+Mark Hanson thanks for the video. I will be making one similar to this but free standing and in our garage. It will separate a third car bay (shop area) from wife car/kids toys, etc . I would like to fasten locking wheels or rollers to the bottom so I can roll it out of the way if need be. Have any suggestions on what to use on the bottom to fasten wheels to? I guess I could add one more shelf on the very bottom then the wheels to the underside..?
+Travis Kepp Yeah, another shelf on the bottom would be good for that. You might want to put a 4 x 4 crossways on the bottom so you have something substantial to fasten the wheels to. Thanks for the comment.
+Mark Hanson thanks for the tip.
About to do this on our 8x14 shed. Thanks👊🏽
