it is also mentioned that gi-hun wasn't there when his daughter was born to save a man from dying. in the last ep, he called his daughter saying that he's gonna see her and give her a present but in the last minute, walked away from his plane, indicating that he will be doing the same thing again, saving someone's life or in this case, everyone's lives
I didn't even notice the pattern when I was watching! And as one who has trained herself to analyze every detail in K-pop videos to catch the hidden symbolisms, I'm a little disappointed in myself.
Nope, will become the next front man/ owner of the games, remember he chose not to help the drunk man when in Il-Nam’s apartment, he watched and waited.
Fun fact: I used to work in the building that Il-Nam died in at the end of the show. Also, regarding Gi-Hun's mom refusing the get medical treatment because it will cost too much, that really means they are extremely poor. Korea has national health care coverage and medical procedures don't really cost that much money. So, for her to refuse treatment they must be extremely poor.
Wait, so you're telling me that Gi Hun named his food business "Ga-Yeong's Chicken"?! For his daughter who loves chicken? I didn't think I could love this man even more ❤😔
He really is a hero he litterly has a heart of gold I want him to get what he deserves (that means to become succesful, get all his friends back, his mom back and his daughter back) he didn't deserve to go through everything he went through sure he may not have been the smartest character in the show but he was the most kindhearted and cared about everyone I hope he get's his revenge in season 2 and takes down those games once and for all
Seeing that this was mentioned multiple times, just wanted to share a little Korean cultural info~ Most Koreans of the older generation had similar lifestyles and mostly lived in neighborhoods like the one in the marble game, played Squid Game (and pretty much all the other games), and had lunches just like the ones they were served :). You can even find them in restaurants in Korea, usually labeled in the menu as "nostalgic lunch box" or "lunch box of the past" So number 1 and number 456 def aren't the only ones who had similar childhoods ^^ my parents and grandparents found the show very nostalgic! Love your videos, can't wait to see more analysis on the characters!
that's what i was thinking! thank you for sharing this. I am from india and the older ones here had similar tiffin boxes and had their own games too, even the neighbourhood. its like most of their generation bonds over it.
It was never confirmed that he paid off the loan sharks when he returned from winning squid game. I thought it was confirmed that he didn't use any of the winnings at all until the old man reached out a year later.
The old man probably took care of his debt towards the bank, it makes sense cause he runs several banks. But dealing with the loan sharks is kinda questionable
that's not even a descent man you gotta do what you gotta do to survive. And it's not like he was betraying them so that he could buy xbox's and ps5s he had to help his mom
@@dimwitter tbh he still did descent, Gi-Hun and Sangwoo are pretty much alike, specially during Marbles and after Glass Stepping Stones. Both cheated their way to win during Marbles and both tried to kill the other players during lights out after Glass Stepping Stones. The only difference they had is that Gi-Hun had people stop him from descending into the darkness, Il-nam made Gi-Hun realize that what he did is wrong and Sae-Byeok made him realize that he is not a killer. Meanwhile, Sangwoo never had anyone to stop him, sure you can say Gi-Hun tried to talk to him after killing Jeong-soo, the glassmaker, but Sangwoo already accepted how it is and how it will be at that point, and there is no turning back
Translating Seong Gi-hun's files really is going above and beyond the call of service. I'm sticking with you for all of my Squid Game information needs.
The red and blue isnt a reference to the matrix, it's a reference to a game in an old Korean story where they would ask you to pick between a red and blue paper and they would kill you no matter what choice you made, read that in an interview with the writer and director of the show.
It's from an old ghost story. In the old days, you would have to use the outhouse to go to the bathroom. So when you're in an outhouse a ghost would ask, do you want a blue toilet paper or red toilet paper? If you choose red, you're beheaded. If you choose blue, the ghost would suck your blood dry
In any other show, Gi-Hun would be the villain or a minor inconvenience character that’s temporary roadblock for our main character with no character development or anything. But here he’s our protagonist and I really love that. Gi-Hun is one of the most unique takes on a protagonist that I’ve seen in a very long time. And his actor deserves every award and nomination for this role. What an epic performance.
in the marble game, Gi Hun tried to cheat the old man but nobody bat an eye but when sang woo did it, people go crazy. The glass game, Gi hun and the girl were too coward to push the guy over so all 3 of them could survive, so Sang Woo manned up and basically saved three of their lives by pushing the man over. If not for Sang Woo, the last 4 remaining players would be dead for no reason and no one woulda won the game.
@@Dom-bn1ru I guess Gi-Hun cheating the old man in the marble game was more acceptable because the old man was very old and is on the verge on death with his tumor. And he looked way sadder than the more secretive Sangwoo. On the other hand, Sangwoo cheated a young guy with a wife and very young child by guilt-tripping him, saying that he gave him money for the bus and told his team how to survive in the last minute, the thing with the money being very hypocritical because he didn't expect something in return at first and was being kind, and in the marble game he dares to remind Ali of that. And his final plan to isolate Ali was more calculated than Gi-Hun's more desperate cheating method. It's hard for me to remember Sangwoo's face when he was sad because he killed Ali unlike Gi-Hun who had his sadness more insistent et visible on camera.
Dragon motors thing is actually real. There is a company called Ssangyong motors meaning double dragon motors in Korea and they went bankrupt years ago and about 30 or more people died during the strike at their plant.
Lee Jung-jae, the main character of the drama, said in an interview. "The theme of this drama is not a fighting capitalist battle royale. The more fundamental theme is to emphasize the altruistic aspect that everyone has and should have in the end."
People who have said “it’s just a job” have obviously never in their life suffered or have seen anyone suffer, or are very privileged. I’m 21 and I have seen how my parents suffered especially how we barely had enough to get by when the market crashed in 2008. I was 8 years old and knew that we were struggling. Never once complained about not having the newest gaming console or having new clothes instead having to wear my brothers old clothes. Even if it didn’t fit me yet as my brother is 5 years older than me. Luckily my father found another job but being an Mexican immigrant that only finished highschool in another country it’s not so easy to find a good paying job. People take jobs for granted but don’t realize once you’re older companies don’t want you especially if you have no education or degree. They will always pick the younger fresh out of highschool kid or younger person with any type of degree. Life only gets harder not easier. how you manage yourself will determine if it stops getting harder because even when life gets easier it’s still hard if you’re not careful you’ll lose everything
His mother refusing medical treatment reminds me of the time I passed out in a laundromat and apparently had something like a seizure, which I never had before. someone called an ambulance for me and all I could think while flying through traffic was how I can't afford to spend $800 on a trip to the hospital, smh. Thank God for that stranger, our lives are worth more than any amount of money, but damn if it's not a f****** strain just to stay alive out here.
Notice the 2nd episode, Ali took money from his boss eventhough he deserves the money, he died because Sang woo took his marbles. Sae Byeok treated to kill a man pointing his knife to that man's neck, she died stabbed by Sang Woo on her neck. Duk Su jumped to the river he fell in the 5th game. Sang Woo tried to kill himself in a bathtub, he killed himself when it was raining. And... Gi Hun recieved money from his ex wive's husband, he took the money, but the ex wive's husband wanted him to stop comming back and Gi Hun and he threw the money and said "DO YOU THINK MONEY SOLVES EVERYTHING???????!!!!!!". We know what happen next, he won, got the money, but he feels miserable.
Notice Gi Hun's expression seconds before they won thug war, he looked at his opponent who were about to die, he felt no pleasure, or relief, or happy, while others pull the line he looked at his opponents for seconds and felt sorry for them. And in the marble game he cried and felt broken during and after the game, unlike Sang Woo who kept feeding his animal brain, he even let Gi Hun to pick umbrella, he kept his reptilian brain ON, just like what the riches want, they were their animals/horses. Both cheated, but Gi Hun never lose his heart, almost when he wanted to kill Gi Hun but Sae Byeok stopped him, while Sang Woo just like animal went to killing mode since the 2nd game. In the last episode Gi Hun said "I'm not horse........I'm a human". Both were the same bassicaly, both fucked up, both cheated, both did their mom dirty, but one thing that seperates them is their heart, Sang Woo completely lost but Gi Hun still has a little of his heart, and if you still have it even a little it will grow if you let it grow.
Which is why I like Gi-hun even though a lot of people hate him for how he treats his family when Sangwoo arguably treats his family way worse by betting everything his mother owns.
@@jamesmccloud7535 tbh I don't get people who hate him. He's trying to be a better son and father to his family. He's not totally a bad dad, at least he tries to be a better one. I don't get people who hate him esp bcs he did nothing for a year. What would you expect from someone who just witnessed his friends dying one by one and his childhood friend commit suicide in front of him? Do you expect him to just go home and be happy? The man has trauma and depression bcs of that, moreover I think his ptsd might be worse after the games and he already has one before he joined the games. Depression can make people do nothing basically. That last decision is also rational. They still have tabs on him. He didn't even immediately turn his back from his flight when he saw the salesman at the train station, he didn't board his flight after he knows that they still keep their tabs on him. Who knows what they'll do to him or his daughter if he boards the plane?
@@felicia5027 Yeh I agree. People criticize him for prioritizing the hundreds of people that might die in the next game instead of his daughter who is living comfortably in the U.S without a problem. It is just part of his character, just like the time when he tried to save his dying friend and missed the pregnancy of his wife as a result because he felt that was more urgent. He is just that kind of person, it is both his strength and flaw. It's way more realistic in my opinion to be selfish in extreme situations but still be guilty about it and at least try to be better rather than go the Sangwoo way and become a complete psychopath.
@@jamesmccloud7535 exactly. That's what differentiates him from sang woo. At least he feels guilty. And that episode 6 idk if it's rly called cheating, I mean the old man consciously give him the chance
@@felicia5027 did we watched thesame show? The old man pretended to forget and the guy was cheating the entire time. Moreover this game made him responsible, be4 then, he was very useless.
Watching this video, I came with this theory about the frontman. As Gi Han, he was so depressed after winning the game he didn't touch the money- we know that from the scene his brother visits his room. So the old man calls him a year later and does similar game with him, watching if someone will help a dying man. In that case though no one helped, so the old man proves this is the state of humanity and after making this point recruits him as the frontman.
omg my pearnts told me i cant watch squid game but now when i started watching ure chanel i feel like even if they let me then i dont have to cuz i allready know everything i feel like i wahced it ure thw best
He also has ton of plot armour, if he wasn’t a main character, he would have realistically died in the Red Light Green Light game, he tripped over another players corpse and “conveniently “ there’s someone there to save him…. Yeah
Correction: 대리기사 is a shortened term for 대리운전기사 which means something like "chauffeur," or, like you translated more closely, "surrogate driver." It's a job where you get dropped off by a company vehicle to drive the customers' vehicles to their desired destination (usually home) when they're unable to drive their car themselves (i.e. drunk; drinking culture is big in Korea)
I just watched all the squid game episodes and then I watched several videos afterwards talking about the squid games. Yours were my favorite. It's getting repetitive, so I appreciate you saying in this video "bear with me" because you acknowledge that. Also, there are some people who do videos that make the tone of their voice go up and down and up and down, and it's really annoying. I was very glad that you talk normally. You did a good job analyzing the main characters. Thanks for the hard work
Great video! Please make a video about Cho Sang-woo. I think he is a really interesting character and it would be great to see a video exploring his moral decay...
Can I just say, as a person who is a creative, and also someone who thinks and LOVES talking about intricate character analysis and deep dives, I just want to say that your videos have been such a joy to watch! This is the first show in a long time to ignite such a visceral emotional and mental reaction from me in SO LONG! (Given, I haven't watch alot in the last two years) But, idk, these videos have just really inspired me, and made me remember how special people who have the ability to really immerse themselves into fictional works of art are, and how we really need to band together to create things like this. Thank you, so much, for your content. You truly have helped start to reawaken this passion for storytelling, and compelling character arcs, and film in me. Thank you so so so so much!!!!!!!!!!! I hope you realize how fucking powerful that is. 🙏♥️🤯💥😁😁😁😁
Ps- Gi-hun is my favorite, and the character I most relate to also.... I think the only other character I've felt such a "moral, LAWFUL " connection to, Is Rick Grimes from the Walking Dead. With the chance that you have already made it known, as I've not done my homework and checked since this is my second suggestion from your channel(I did follow though, 100%!!!!😆), I'm curious as to if you feel the same? Either way, please continue on! This channel and your thoughts have completely inspired and reinvigorated my love for this!
I don't think the gift is the hair. He did that for himself not for his daughter. The red hair represents his rage at what has happened. I doubt he is going to gift his daughter his hate over his love, he is reformed to an extent, not a shit dirt bag dad that he was before. He gave her a gun by accident before, I am sure he was going to give her something loving on purpose this time.
Yeah I don't think the hair was the gift either but I do wonder how would his daughter react to his red hair? I have a feeling she woldve been shocked lol
I just realized that the 7th game (Gi-Hon and the Old Man betting on whether someone will help the drunk before midnight) is played on the 7th Floor. At first I thought meeting in the 7th Floor was an odd choice; usually dramatic scenes would take place on the top floor of a skyscraper.
Thank you for being so down to earth and a voice of reason. The comment about job loss shows your empathy and wisdom in a day and age when I perceive most content creators as delusional and spoilt rotten, totally out of touch from reality and common people's issues.
I think it's because in the ending part, where he withdrew some money for sangwoo's mom and sae byuk brother.. so maybe that's where he took the conclusion since he had the courage to finally take some to pay off the loan sharks, plane ticket, red haircut, suit, and the gift
We dont know for sure that he didn't take out any additional money between that 10,000 and when he meets with the banker. But I've only seen the show once, so I may not be remembering correctly. That said, it's hard to imagine him going through the trouble, considering the depression he was in. (Of course, I can't imagine him getting medical help, either, and those injuries would have needed some special care.) The other day, out of the blue, I wondered whether Il-Nam might have called the loan sharks off (assuming they were agents for him), or whether he just paid them off. He seems quite taken with the study of human nature (see that last "game"), and I can see him wanting Gi-Hun to live so that Il-Nam could watch and see what he'd do.
@@tealablu3759 that’s when he first uses his new atm card. Later on time passes and he’s in a nice suit, had a nice haircut, and seems to be much happier. He obviously paid off his debts and more
We all know that Il-Nam is not his father but while using his mom's credit card, we see that the mom and Il-Nam share the same surname. She's obviously using her maiden name. Could be a red herring or a sign that they're really related. Not his dad but maybe his uncle.
You actually put so much info into these videos while other channels make these 15min vids of 3 well known tidbits of info they ramble on about. Love the content please make more.
More videos on the way! Thanks Chad Koivuneva, hearing that really does mean a lot, especially cause I'll spend a while on a script to make it as insightful as possible!
I just finished watching and I'm so grateful I found these videos! I can't stop thinking about Squid Game. I love these breakdowns, and reading all the comments and theories.
Same to live in Sweden, thought medical insurance and care in Korea is super affordable, so it's basically as NHS. So for Gi-Hun cancelling their insurance was just shitty so he could ger a couple of extra dollars to gambling for.
@@MissBerry2u same dude! But I also feel so sorry for Gi-Huns mother. I mean with the insurance that cost a couple of dollars every month and could hav given her full treatment without paying, Gi-Hun cancelled it to gamble for. When I was in Korea I needed a cortison injection in my knee and a morphine shot for the pain. I also need a few morphine tablets foe my flight back home so I could manage the pain during flight. It cost me €15 without insurance because it would be more expensive to use my travel insurance. I men 15 euros for an injection of cortison, one for morphine and morphine tablets. They you understand how deep in the shit Gi-Hun is and the saddest part is that he did it to his mother. He basically killed her.
@@Musiknird Yes, I completely agree. I found the parts about Gi-Hun's irresponsibility towards the people close to him, so difficult and uncomfortable to watch.
Just while we’re all at it, his pronunciation of Il nam is a bit dodgy too in my opinion. But dodgy name pronunciations aside, I do really like these videos 🙂
@@mrsdaisyom Yes, the pronunciation of names ending in "k" is almost a Chinese pronunciation! It was bugging me, but I appreciate his efforts with these explanation videos, so I'll get over it.
The intention of my original comment isn't to go hard critiquing Bryce's pronunciation. I just really want everyone to know at least the main character's name because it is not a hard name to pronounce for Americans. Some of the other names are understandably a little harder. As a Korean, I hope people will promote Korean entertainment and culture with a little more effort towards the pronunciation.
I think that in the second season of Squid Game they will probably more likely than not just pull off an Hunger Game move and have Gi Hun rejoin the game then finally shutting down the organisation.
I really like your explanations, theyre super in depth and make alot of sense. Alot of the other videos i seen explaining Squid Game dont add up and sound kinda dumb with minimal connections looking deeper.
There is one seen I’ve seen so many people miss and I’m wondering it’s importance. At one point, the Front man leaves the elevator and due to the lighting in the elevator, his cloak goes from almost a white or gold color to black when he steps out of it. Did anyone else notice that?
@@Johsther with color theory I’d think it’s important. It reminds me of how Gihun changed his hair color after changing his perspective. Plus everyone thinks Gihun will be the next front man but he wants to try to shut down the games. Maybe it’s possible that he goes in with the intentions to shut it down (white) and ends up consumed by the game (black)
Gi-Hun went through so much on the show, phenomenal portrayal of the character by Lee Jung-Jae, deep, emphatic, caring, nuanced performance, you wanted Gi-Hun to win. 👏👏👏
great analysis for such a great show. The acting from the main characters is unbelievable. The VIP's were a let down but they were just stereo types. You should do the gangster and the doctor.
No one can go through with Gi Hun went through and just magically go on with his life without trauma, guilt, grief and anger. Getting on that plane would not have solved any of his problems.
Great analyses that I would never think about. Just something to note- as a Korean- red crosses are ubiquitous throughout South Korea, as it's basically the main representation of a crucifix that you'd find for many churches. Some churches may favor different iterations of a crucifix, but the red light-up cross is the one you'll usually find the most. But regardless, the symbolism you've stated is probably something very important to note. Also I just got a little bone to pick with your pronunciation of the director's name. Enjoying all the videos about SG regardless.
I’ve been saying that for the longest when it comes to Gi hun dyeing his hair red. The man has committed/witness countless sins go down in the games and as the sole survivor of a man riddled with guilt he decides to die it red for he truly that his hands are stained in blood.
Or, maybe he looked at the picture on the wall and thought it looked cool so he had his hair styled that way. Everything doesn’t have to be a symbol or have a secret meaning.
Meeting on the 7th floor might actually be a reference to how they played the 7th game that Il-Nam orchestrated, namely betting over the drunkard. It in essence is the 7th game-room
Red, Blue, and Yellow are the primary colors. Yellow and blue make green so. 💛 Sorry, had to do it. Great video and I just started following. This is the best style of all the Squid Game videos I've seen. Keep up the good work.
Great video! Would love for you to do the video about the Salesman. He’s probably my most anticipated character for future seasons, I feel like he’ll play such a larger role in the story. Or at least I hope so.
Nobodies brought up the real questions. How an organization who can afford to staff and feed a full facility of workers and give out 39million dollars a year has someone only betting 1 million on a player. The players are making more then them smh.
When you play roulette or bet on horses (like the show showed us), the return is not nessesary 2:1. I would guess the payout for a first round bet to the winner, could be 456:1. But its all guess work from my end.
@@idontlikesand7246 this worsens the situation of only betting 1 million and obviously there were more people, these were just the “VIP’S” some of the viewers who chose to come and see the games in person.
0:40 I don't know if anyone brought this up but "대리기사" as "deputy engineer" is a mistranslation. Yes, "대리" can mean a deputy and "기사" can mean an engineer but "대리기사" in this context is the same thing as "대리운전기사", which you correctly translated as "surrogate driver" / "chauffeur". Basically Gi-hun was paid to drive drunk people home and he's been doing it for 5 years.
It's actually pronounced "hoon", not hun ;) and the director's name hyuk is pronounced closer to 'he-yuck' but said quickly like goofy laughing 'ah hyuk hyuk'
The glass bridge represents Gi-hun's transition from his old self to the more decisive person he becomes. Right before he jumps on the bridge, he forgets which tile to jump on. That's our Gi-hun! After making it near the end thanks to everyone who died before him, he finally contributes using Il-nam's marble to check the glass. Then, when they're all off the bridge, Gi-hun has become someone willing to call out, or even kill Sang-woo. Gi-hun finally changes after the bridge.
dude you should be an FBI agent or something like that, your ability to detect patterns and things barely no one notices is incredible, you remind me of "L" from death note
Seong GI Han died his hair representing all the blood shed and was paying his respects to everyone that had died. When he got the phone call right before he was getting on the plane he decided to end the game and killing once and for all. He knew the layout of the game and received more hindsight when he talked to number 1 in the hospital. That’s just my theory and I can’t wait until season 2 comes out!
Random old man he’s known a few days: “let me be the most respectful and considerate in the room to you” Mother who has been there for him in every way for many decades: “what’s your bank pin I need to gamble. And your physically hurt do t work as much! Again what’s your bank pin?”
@@ghostinyou588 and steal their money? That’s not rude? Don’t downplay what I wrote to words to argue a point. It was more than rude. At least a crackhead steals money from strangers and their parents. Doesn’t only steal from the parents because they feel bad for the stranger. And he was very rude to his mom. I never said he didn’t love her, I’m pointing out how he treated a random old man better than his mother. Most people stop acting like that towards their mother before turning thirty, and never stole from her while she struggled paying all the bills. He is not disabled yet she can find work. @@faychel8383 Well he was having a hard time being traumatized with his company strike and business failing. Didn't he give his mom a lot more when he won Dakjji?
@@naylisyazwina6836 It's really funny because a lot of people dislike Gi-hun because of his flaws and the way he treats his family. Yet an overwhelming number of people love Sangwoo even though he arguably treats his family way worse than Gi Hun by constantly lying to his mom and using his mom's business and everything she owns as a bet or something. Now all of that made him almost kill himself in the beginning because he couldn't live with it. Why no hate for Sangwoo though if we're criticizing a character's morality. Despite all of the failings of Gi-Hun it has been shown that underneath he still has a heart and does care for his family. Which is way more realistic than just straight-up being a psychopath and murdering people that are close to you without an inch of guilt.
It's awesome that you put a scene from The Matrix in this video, because post-Squid Game Gi-hun, sitting on the subway with long hair, looked like a Korean Keanu Reeves!
You screwed up the last theory. He dyes his hair red simply because red is a symbol for superiority and masculinity in Korea. He was simply showing that he was the alpha male and no longer the weak lower class man.
remember how before he played squid game he said he doesn't believe in jesus.. after playing it we see a man helping him on the roadside holding s banner saying "believe in Jesus".
I just read another comment that mentioned this was the 33rd Squid Game. 33 is a spiritually significant number, often connected to/representing Jesus. So I think this vid is on to something with the religious aspects of the theories!
Regarding the idea that the old man isn't Gui-Hon's dad because he mentions that his son's birthday is the 24th but Guihon's birthday is the 31st: I don't think this forecloses the possibility. In the first episode, Gui-Hon can't remember his mom's birthday because he says she uses the lunar calendar; it could be that Gui-Hon's dad, the old man, is using a different calendar to date Gui-Hon's birthday and therefore is saying it's a different date.
@@TacoBurrit0 it could be that the loan sharks assumed he's already dead or gone or something though I doubt it considering the game is only for like 6 days
I had the same question, too, and I feel like it's just another plot hole that the show never bothers to try to explain. Little things like that drive me nuts, because if the writing isn't consistent to its own story, then there's no point in watching.
Spending money and paying debt aren't the same thing. If I have 1k and $500 in debt and I tell you that I paid off my debt but didn't spend a dime, that'd mean I have $500. Look at this the same way.
Ikr even though her daughter didn't hate her dad and still had fun with him I would still want her to realize how much he cares about her and loves her and how much he went through to get her a present and that he joined the Squid Game .and risked his own life for her (and his mom) just so he could get closer to her and be a better father to her I really wish she would understand how much her dad (Gi Hun) loves her
Dragon motors (ssang-yong) strike was a real incident in korea. Can you make an analysis video on connection between this and sung gi hun’s life in fiction?
Your video gave me a great theory idea about why the frontman would have become the frontman after winning the game! After winning the game, he cannot stop thinking about the game. He has had to do some unspeakable things in order to win and survive. He has been a good person (he donated his kidney to his brother) but his own financial struggles have left him no choice but try his luck at the game. He has convinced himself that he didn't have any other choice but to kill and betray other players to survive. He decides to become the frontman so he can affirm that everyone who wins at the game has to do the same as he did. The only way for him to live with his guilt is to convince himself that it is human nature, that everyone who accepts the game are scum anyway and they deserve to die because they all would have killed or have killed others to win in the game. Seeing Gi-hun acting the way he did, winning the game without ever directly killing anyone or being responsible for anyone's death in a direct way, will make him doubt the whole concept again. If he manages to face his own guilt and accept that he has done atrocious acts, he could come back from that and try to find some form of redemption by taking down the whole conspiracy from within. How cool would that be for Season 2 or 3?! In Season 2, they should do backflashes that show how/why he needed so much money and entered the game, how he struggled with PTSD after it and how he finally was turned into the frontman.
it is also mentioned that gi-hun wasn't there when his daughter was born to save a man from dying. in the last ep, he called his daughter saying that he's gonna see her and give her a present but in the last minute, walked away from his plane, indicating that he will be doing the same thing again, saving someone's life or in this case, everyone's lives

Shhhhh, don’t spoil the season 2 leak.
He turns into Gus Fring and runs a cartel.

He should also open a laundromat
Wait, so you're telling me that Gi Hun named his food business "Ga-Yeong's Chicken"?! For his daughter who loves chicken? I didn't think I could love this man even more ❤😔
He really is a hero he litterly has a heart of gold I want him to get what he deserves (that means to become succesful, get all his friends back, his mom back and his daughter back) he didn't deserve to go through everything he went through sure he may not have been the smartest character in the show but he was the most kindhearted and cared about everyone I hope he get's his revenge in season 2 and takes down those games once and for all
@@EneaAndAleasWorld970 He's 1 of the few conestants who is truly a very good person but in a very bad desperate situation.
Nah, he betrayed Player number 1 to win the marble game. He's no good
I think it's common in Asian countries to name your business after your kid. Sangwoo's mom also named her fish shop after him
Seeing that this was mentioned multiple times, just wanted to share a little Korean cultural info~
Most Koreans of the older generation had similar lifestyles and mostly lived in neighborhoods like the one in the marble game, played Squid Game (and pretty much all the other games), and had lunches just like the ones they were served :). You can even find them in restaurants in Korea, usually labeled in the menu as "nostalgic lunch box" or "lunch box of the past"
So number 1 and number 456 def aren't the only ones who had similar childhoods ^^ my parents and grandparents found the show very nostalgic!
Love your videos, can't wait to see more analysis on the characters!
Dosirak is really nice.
that's what i was thinking! thank you for sharing this. I am from india and the older ones here had similar tiffin boxes and had their own games too, even the neighbourhood. its like most of their generation bonds over it.
Wow
So good to know 😁
ah if old man created the games then he would add stuff that he is familiar with, that’s a good detail
Thank you so much for sharing!
When they introduced the games they said that they'll take care of their debts so they could start from scratch with the money.
@@francobarraza7247 You are making things up. There was absolutely no indication that player #1 paid off the debt.

I really wanna see a video analyzing Sang Woo's descent into darkness
Same
I heard he graduated from snu
that's not even a descent man you gotta do what you gotta do to survive.
Meanwhile, Sangwoo never had anyone to stop him, sure you can say Gi-Hun tried to talk to him after killing Jeong-soo, the glassmaker, but Sangwoo already accepted how it is and how it will be at that point, and there is no turning back
He just did what he had to do to survive
The thing that i found saddest was actually the relationship between him and his mother
He treated her terribly from the beginning. He only regrets when she's pass away
Translating Seong Gi-hun's files really is going above and beyond the call of service. I'm sticking with you for all of my Squid Game information needs.
😂💯
The red and blue isnt a reference to the matrix, it's a reference to a game in an old Korean story where they would ask you to pick between a red and blue paper and they would kill you no matter what choice you made, read that in an interview with the writer and director of the show.
It's from an old ghost story. In the old days, you would have to use the outhouse to go to the bathroom. So when you're in an outhouse a ghost would ask, do you want a blue toilet paper or red toilet paper? If you choose red, you're beheaded. If you choose blue, the ghost would suck your blood dry
@@CodyCha the fact that the start is a reference to a child horror story just makes it even better and fits the "children's games" theme of the show
@@CodyCha wow i def heard that story as a kid but i did not make that connection.
Just because the creator has stated their intentions, doesn't mean that all other interpretations are wrong.
Watching season 2, the matrix reference is Canon and 4th walled 😂
In any other show, Gi-Hun would be the villain or a minor inconvenience character that’s temporary roadblock for our main character with no character development or anything.
But here he’s our protagonist and I really love that. Gi-Hun is one of the most unique takes on a protagonist that I’ve seen in a very long time.
And his actor deserves every award and nomination for this role. What an epic performance.
Yeah I feel like that was a huge part of this show's success. Having a protagonist that's essentially a total loser at the beginning.
@@crazykid18841 that's pretty common in hero arcs, but this show does it really well.
for real
in the marble game, Gi Hun tried to cheat the old man but nobody bat an eye but when sang woo did it, people go crazy.
That's true.
I’ve always been curious as to how the recruiter managed to get the thug to play the slapping game
Good point, but the thug is the biggest slave to money and a coward deep inside.
😂😂😂
Not many people know this about the series but Sang Woo actually graduated from Seoul university
Why God lets you have seizures from the beginning? Lol
We know what happen next, he won, got the money, but he feels miserable.
gi-hun red pilled himself with the red hair and then said "it wasn't a dream"
Cringe

"Fly Me to the Moon", always makes me think of Bayonetta, even when they played it on Squid Game. Great video, Mr. Bryce.
Makes me think of Neon Genesis Evangelion
Watching this video, I came with this theory about the frontman. As Gi Han, he was so depressed after winning the game he didn't touch the money- we know that from the scene his brother visits his room. So the old man calls him a year later and does similar game with him, watching if someone will help a dying man. In that case though no one helped, so the old man proves this is the state of humanity and after making this point recruits him as the frontman.
Thanks dear ❤️❤️

I just realized that the 7th game (Gi-Hon and the Old Man betting on whether someone will help the drunk before midnight) is played on the 7th Floor. At first I thought meeting in the 7th Floor was an odd choice; usually dramatic scenes would take place on the top floor of a skyscraper.

He only took 10k won out of his prize money. How did you conclude he paid off his debts????
I think it's because in the ending part, where he withdrew some money for sangwoo's mom and sae byuk brother.. so maybe that's where he took the conclusion since he had the courage to finally take some to pay off the loan sharks, plane ticket, red haircut, suit, and the gift
We dont know for sure that he didn't take out any additional money between that 10,000 and when he meets with the banker. But I've only seen the show once, so I may not be remembering correctly.
That said, it's hard to imagine him going through the trouble, considering the depression he was in. (Of course, I can't imagine him getting medical help, either, and those injuries would have needed some special care.)
The other day, out of the blue, I wondered whether Il-Nam might have called the loan sharks off (assuming they were agents for him), or whether he just paid them off. He seems quite taken with the study of human nature (see that last "game"), and I can see him wanting Gi-Hun to live so that Il-Nam could watch and see what he'd do.

There is one seen I’ve seen so many people miss and I’m wondering it’s importance. At one point, the Front man leaves the elevator and due to the lighting in the elevator, his cloak goes from almost a white or gold color to black when he steps out of it. Did anyone else notice that?
I think I remember that scene, and pretty sure a lot of people do too

I cant believe you noticed that red cross its unbelievable 😲
Meeting on the 7th floor might actually be a reference to how they played the 7th game that Il-Nam orchestrated, namely betting over the drunkard. It in essence is the 7th game-room

@@faychel8383 Well he was having a hard time being traumatized with his company strike and business failing. Didn't he give his mom a lot more when he won Dakjji?
@@faychel8383 I said the same thing dude. I really dislike Gi Hun. He only started caring after he saw his mom's legs like that
@@naylisyazwina6836 It's really funny because a lot of people dislike Gi-hun because of his flaws and the way he treats his family.
The Matrix was also mentioned in the show after Tug of War.
You screwed up the last theory. He dyes his hair red simply because red is a symbol for superiority and masculinity in Korea. He was simply showing that he was the alpha male and no longer the weak lower class man.
wow really...that would fit too
As always, loved the video!
Thank you Dawn Walks!
remember how before he played squid game he said he doesn't believe in jesus..
after playing it we see a man helping him on the roadside holding s banner saying "believe in Jesus".
Actually they did mention the snack bar in the show! I remember they said he had two failed businesses, one of which was the chicken restaurant.
Wow. Incredible details. Thanks for sharing.
So glad you liked it Hailey Carter!
I can't wait for season 2!

it’s gonna take atleast a year or two
Awsome Analysis!,
Please do Cho Sang-Woo next. He was my favorite!
Oh I hated him with a PASSION haha. But I completely understand. He was a great character.
Ohh really ❤️❤️
Thanks for this insightful analysis!
Thanks dear ❤️❤️
I'd love an analysis on Sang-woo, in my opinion he is the best and most interesting character.
Made it, hope you like it!
Love it, love it, love it looooove it!
Beautiful video!
Yay, thank you Crashin LittleBritain!
You said the first thing he did was to pay off his debts but then a year later they said he hasn’t spent any of his money, which one is it?
technically that's really the first thing he did, if you don't count "wandering aimlessly as a hobo" as something he did
@@Johsther but he didn't touch his winnings save for 10k won. So he's still going to be in debt unless he found another way to come up with 160m won
@@TacoBurrit0 it could be that the loan sharks assumed he's already dead or gone or something
though I doubt it considering the game is only for like 6 days
I had the same question, too, and I feel like it's just another plot hole that the show never bothers to try to explain. Little things like that drive me nuts, because if the writing isn't consistent to its own story, then there's no point in watching.
Spending money and paying debt aren't the same thing. If I have 1k and $500 in debt and I tell you that I paid off my debt but didn't spend a dime, that'd mean I have $500. Look at this the same way.
Fun fact: Gi-hun was originally going to be player 999 with 12 games.
His daughter made me feel like a bad dad and I don't even have kids!
Ikr even though her daughter didn't hate her dad and still had fun with him I would still want her to realize how much he cares about her and loves her and how much he went through to get her a present and that he joined the Squid Game .and risked his own life for her (and his mom) just so he could get closer to her and be a better father to her I really wish she would understand how much her dad (Gi Hun) loves her
I still feel bad for his poor mother after many years. You can't convince me otherwise.
