Your videos that go in-depth in comparing the US-made vs. their less expensive analogue brethren are so interesting and full of useful information that I love. Please keep up the amazing work, mate!
Last weekend I saw The Eagles on Saturday and KISS on Sunday. Joe Walsh played an Epiphone Jared James Nichols model on a few songs and Tommy Thayer played his Epiphone Signature on a good 1/3rd of KISS's set. It made me smile very much seeing that. I'd say Epiphone's are giggable if 2 guitarists from 2 legendary bands were playing them.
But the other reason big shot guitarists play Epiphone Les Paul is to avoid risking expensive Gibson Les Paul being damaged or stolen. The difference in tone is minor but the feel is bigger.
@@liveconcerts7550 I’d agree with that. There is a difference in feel. The Gibson studio I play is different from the Epiphone Junior I play. But I think it comes down to personal preference at that point.
I take it as a cosmic hint, that you post a video about the 50's Goldtop today and I am about to pull the trigger on one!!! EDIT: I can't leave the comment without saying that this channel has become one of my absolute favourites on RUclips. Your playing style and choice of material and tone in demonstrating these instruments is remarkable. That tone on the outro is outrageous!!!
@@theguitaristas Indeed! The Goldtop arrived today, perfect in fit, finish and setup. Needed just the slightest adjustment to the D string for tuning, and that was it!
I usually queue up a bunch of longer videos and skip through the content to save time here on RUclips but I recently found this channel and always end up taking the time to watch all of it. Just a really nice, calm vibe with a great attitude towards gear and lots of great information about the guitars, all topped off with some really nice playing as well. Great video and channel!
i love it, instead of seeing your "preference" as something good or overplaying how good something is you just say "we dont know what that means" There are alot of "we dont know what thats means" in this Video. Talking about such small differences with perspective in mind makes your videos a pleasure to watch! Thank you!
I agree with everything you say here. I own both the epiphone & gibson les paul 50s standards & whilst I have to admit that the gibson is on another level in terms of quality, I actually enjoy playing the epiphone so much more due to the fact that i get nervous playing the gibson because it is so delicate. All you have to do is look at it & a ding appears. It's been a dream of mine for so long to own a gibson les paul standard, but the reality is that my playing suffers when using it because I'm more concerned with not damaging it. So because of that reason, I've regrettably decided to sell it. I've thrown in a seymour duncan jb & jazz humbucker set into the epiphone & I have to say, it is absolutely stunning in both sound & playability & is a seriously genuine alternative to the gibson.
the gibson looks absolutely stunning in that finish andsounds just as good as it looks. the epiphone really holds it's own against the gibson and it's a lot of guitar for the money.
Thanks to this channel, I got that same Epi 50's goldtop and I absolutely love it! It's sad to say but my 2012 Gibson LP Studio does not sound as good nor play as good as the Epi to me...a real testament to just how far Epiphone has come! Thanks again for this awesome channel!
Nice one Dave!... I was just playing these two again today and I actually think I prefer playing the Epiphone?... it seems to invite me to 'dig in' a but more than the Gibbo :)
As I'm watching this the video is 2 years old, but it still feels absolutely relevant. Thank you for a real and entertaining comparison. Great job Sir, keep up the good work. Love your channel!
Re; the wiring on these two... I did get it arse about face in the film and as a matter of fact it's the Epiphone that has the proper 50's wiring and not the Gibson. I also remembered I can just check the end to see how many pieces of wood! Thanks to those that pointed out the error of my ways! Cheers.
The way to stop stand rash is to heat the rubber parts to drive off the volatile compounds that react with the nitro. I also have a method for perfect Gibson tuning stability on my channel.
Are you tempted to test out one of the new Epiphone "Lazarus" Joe bonamassa Les pauls. Seem simoarly spec'd to the 59 custom shop limted epiphone run, the top looks superb.
@@theguitaristas Yeah your right if I was in your position and already owned the 59 I'd be happy. I've seen complaints about some looking rather less flamed than others and also mismatched tops/veneer, I imagine the sound would be very similar to the 59. I guess it's just an alternative finish option to those who haven't got the 59 or Joe fans.
I had the Epiphone and loved it but had to get the “real” thing as my head calls it. I have to say that although the Epi is a great guitar, the Gibson outperforms it in every way, the pickups are incredible and despite what you thought, I found a big, big difference in the feel of them both. The Gibson just felt right if you know what I mean.
but did you have a regular epiphone les paul standard, or did you have this one specifically? because the one in the video comes from a production line that teamed up with the Gibson custom shop, hence its name being "inspired by Gibson", i mean i know there must be a difference, its still an epiphone, its cheaper than the Gibson, but these have been said to be a very game changer on the epiphone's line... i guess that long story short im just saying that its not really the same to compare a gibson to a "regular" epiphone, to compare a gibson to this epiphone line, or maybe you did have this one haha i was just wondering if the comparison was on point
I cant tell you how much I appreciate the honesty and depth of the comparisons on your channel. Having owned many Gibsons and Epiphones over the years, I currently own 3 Epiphones and no Gibsons. I just can no longer justify the price difference. Maybe if I was a professional player but I'm not. By the way, I love listening to your playing. It's quite inspiring.
Cheers William, I really appreciate your support and kind words! It’s certainly nice to own or have owned and play a Gibson but as you say the difference in price is so much these days, and the competition so fierce that there are probably smarter options! 😎👍🎸
The Gibson prices $$$ are a total high way robbery. Maybe a used Gibson Les paul for the right $$$.😉or maybe a Epiphone Les Paul custom JJ , MkH custom, 59 , slash , standard , classic or a Les Paul prophecy. Even a schecter solo ll or esp ltd 1000ec and the ltd traditional bodies. Lots to choose from .....
I'm not a professional and never will be. Probably never play outside of my living room again lol,but I still treat myself to expensive gear. I do it for me,don't need an audience.
Cheers from Canada! I had a pretty crazy story of how I bought a 2020 Gibson Les Paul Standard 60s bourbon burst used. When I got home I started to do a full deep clean which also lets you spot every imperfection. It had a lot of imperfections for a 2 year old guitar.. That made me remember your videos and because of them I was able to identify parts were swapped out like the bridge, pickups and tuners. I went back to the store and returned it. They were all quite surprised this was even sold to me. I bought a 2021 Gibson Les Paul Standard 50's Gold Top. Thanks for always providing informative and detailed videos. It really helped me from getting bamboozled! A lot of the guys at the store knew who you were too. Neat!
I haven't seen guitars this good from Gibson ever. I have a Murphy Lab '57 that I don't play out ever...and on a whim I went into a Guitar Center and played a 50's off the wall which I haven't done in a long time. I knew the new management needed some time to work to get things better so I thought I'd give Gibson one last shot to really deliver. I plugged in the 50's and that guitar was something great right off the rip. Once I got it home on my setup....and I do not say this lightly...this is the best PAF Gibson Les Paul I have ever heard and the actual setup and playing is essentially magical. Hanging in a Guitar Center of all places with a dried out fret board and nobody even noticing it was a straight up stage assassin. We bought it on the spot. Got it home and played it for my awesome wife. We just both looked at eachother in disbelief. Within a couple of hours we were both in front of the computer looking for another one with a different top...and we bought without hesitation. Really dig in to whats going on with the specs. If you know great guitars and what made them great...the Standard 50's hits nearly all of the checkboxes. They are heavier so if you are getting older without a footrest situation or you have chronic back issues or just play better for you with something really light...this isn't the guitar for you. But if you're of the mind that is tired of guitars so light that they feel like toys and are tired of having literally no options in the 9 lb to 12 lb range...this is a return to the guitars Gibson was known for making. Truly remarkable.
Lovely video into details thanks for your time 👌. 1 question! I'm thinking about Gibson tribute gold top p90s ,59s neck style, it's like e studio but it's sais tribute, the guy is selling it for £800 I thinking to offer £700 but I don't too much about tribute series. What do you think Sir? Thanks again.
Hey Riki, Tribute Goldtop with P90's is proper killer guitar... I had something like that a few years back and it sounded great, but they only used to cost £500 - $600 so depending how old he should take an offer but even at £700 you won't lose on it. I say go for it!
Absolutely love your video's - the no nonsense, normal, unbiased approach and the easy to understand, jargon avoiding descriptions are a refreshing change from some of the other reviews around these days
Hey Colin. A perfect Friday evening for me is watching your channel even if I’ve seen your videos a dozen times. Like the Les Pauls you review. Like you, I’m just addicted. Keep up the great work you do. I need it. From LA.
Your guitar reviews have been a favorite of mine for quite some time now. Your passion for guitars really comes through in each video, and it's clear that you have a wealth of knowledge and expertise to share. I've watched your reviews many times and always found them to be both informative and enjoyable. You're clearly dedicated to the instrument, and I find that inspiring. I appreciate how you take the time to provide thorough feedback and explain things clearly, making your videos a great resource for anyone looking to learn more about guitars. Thank you for all the amazing content you put out there!!!
Thanks for your great reviews Colin. I purchased the gold top Epiphone yesterday and I am very happy with it! I like the fact is you are aware that not everyone is a blues lawyer or dentist and that hard working people need to spend their money wisely. Keep up the great job! Cheers
Excellent video! Could tell it took a lot of hard work and careful thought. There’s a phenomenon in surfing where certain boards are a bit “suicidal”. They get dinged up every time you ride them, fall over in the house, and get bumped at a statistically impossible rate. Couldn’t help think of that with your new Gibson keep a close eye on that one 😂
That's funny to think of a surfboard as "suicidal". When new guitars don't stay in tune, I tell my wife that it's because the wood doesn't realize it's a guitar yet.
I got the exact same Gibson 50s standard. I had multiple high quality fender and ESP's in my life and nothing sings and resonates like the Gibson. it's just on another level to be honest! Pickups are also great for playing blues/rock.
@@automatoncollectives7237 The OP stated those things from their own perspective. Think about it,...you people that have a problem with it are basically demanding that if a person says that Gibson is better than their other guitars, they had better put a disclaimer in there like,.."of course this is just my opinion" If you already understand that it is an opinion based subject,..why the fuss ? The opinion part goes without saying I think most of us know the answer to that question.
@@automatoncollectives7237 Point taken. I was just reading it "as-is" man. And what he stated is factual from his perspective. Which is the very nature of an opinion. Its not an objective subject, so you can argue away at it and no one is right or even wrong if they say the Gibson is better. It actually is, from their perspective, just like it actually isn't from your own perspective.
@@automatoncollectives7237 I don't mean to belabor anything but statements regarding subjective topics are a reality because they are unique to a person's perspective. If he said Gibson is the best guitar or that his Gibson is better than all the other makes that he has tried,..its all true. At the same time, if you stated the opposite,..it's all true. You can debate forevermore and it doesn't necessarily mean that anyone is right or wrong, even with bold declarations such as "Gibson is the best guitar" Its fair to argue that in lots of ways but you become wrong when you start to represent the other person's statement as objective or trying to make it objective. They can't make it objective. What makes this topic subjective is not what someone says or doesn't say. Its already subjective before they open their mouth. The GIbson IS better when it comes from the mouth of someone who believes it to be. Again, it's true for all intents and purposes FOR the person stating such. If you take an objective reality such as,..Steel and Aluminum with equal masses have different weights and the steel is heavier. Then someone comes along and states that aluminum weighs MORE than steel at equal mass. It is at this point that nobody has a claim to their own truth or perspective because this is an objective topic and that person would be wrong.
The same opinion l've got on my Gibson Les Paul Standard 1991 and my new Epiphone Les Paul 50s Gold Top.. Two great guitars... Great channel... I can't stop following you...
Personally I really liked both. If I had to choose one. I'd probably say the Gibson, but wow man. The Epiphone was great. I have two Epiphone les pauls. Both have Gibson pups and pots. I still really dig that gold top though. Cheers.
Another excellent show and this time it didn't cost me any money--I already have both of these guitars. Those little marks on the Gibson, even the ding, are probably repairable, especially if you're good at doing drop fills. The ding wouldn't likely be completely invisible, but it could be much toned down and less noticeable. By the way, the differences, to my way of thinking, are minimal and I play the Epiphone as much as I do the Gibson.
i've got 2 teles, a dear yank one and £100 second hand squier, I always play the squier cos I much prefer the neck, the yank does sound better, but not much (and it never goes out of tune)
I purchased an Epiphone Les Paul this year and I was quite surprised by its quality! Great solid finish as you mentionned and it is by far the most stable in terms of tuning in my experience. I own a Tele, Godin, Schecter but the Epiphone LesPaul Standard keeps his tune better. Nice sound and thick neck, I love it!
I just returned my Gibson and am waiting on my 50s gold top. I have had several epiphones and liked them all. Thank you so much for the information, I also subscribed...
Just a note re the nitro finish - they add a UV-blocker to it so the finish won't fade over time like the original 'bursts did (unfortunately). It also contains higher levels of plasticiser too so the finish will remain softer compared to the lacquer they used to use. That original lacquer would harden like glass so it'd chip or fracture as it'd became brittle over time. I bought a tobacco burst Standard 50s a couple of years ago and can't fault it, though it does weigh a ton. Gibson quality control seems to have improved greatly in recent years.
@@theguitaristas They got the right formula but they just don't use it on standard models. If you look at well played custom shop models from early 2000s you can clearly see the fading. But the finish on standard model still checks and cracks like how nitro should be. there are plenty of nitro cracks on my 50s standard!
@@theguitaristas Hey dude, the current Standards have a thicker finish compared to the Custom Shop guitars. The nitro formula will have changed over the years as a result of two things - health & safety rules and money. Spraying nitro all day long is bad for your health so the formula probably had to change to make it safer to use for prolonged periods. Plus it's probably quicker to finish/buff a Standard range guitar that has more plasticiser in the finish than a Custom Shop which might use a purer nitro (time is money!). As for the 'fogging' that you see on your Standard's finish where your arm rests, that's possibly down to how acidic the oils in your skin are. If you want to see a real master at refinishing and aging Les Pauls, check out the 8Bomb Custom channel. The detail that he goes into is amazing.
I LOVE your channel Colin. You go into all the minutia and rabbit holes I wonder about and enjoy learning about. You deserve and will soon have many many more subscribers! Your content and quality is top notch! Thanks for doing this. Cheers from New Orleans, LA!!!
@@theguitaristasI love what you doing,it is exactely what I feel it was missing,so THANKS A LOT! Recentely I found an Epiphone Les Paul 2002 Korean Made and I don't know to much about it.Would you post your oppinians about that,Please!
I always wanted an LP. I finally bought a Gibson LP Standard 60s last week in Bourbon Burst. I absolutely love it. I loved my other guitars, but this is a Gibson. There's something special about that on its own. It sounds like every rock star I ever admired as a kid.
I have a couple of Epis with custom pickups and they are lighter at 8lbs and great.I also have a Les Paul Traditional which has a beautiful sound and weighs 9.99 lbs. So it's the opposite weight-wise. In an ideal situation, I'd advise people to just save up and look around for the right Gibson because they sound magic from the off.
Yeah I agree. And with an Epi, if you ever want to sell it you're more or less stuck trading it in. With a Gibson, if you buy second hand, you can trade, buy, sell without ever losing money after the initial buy. It's just far more guitar, on every level and decently worth having if you play Les Pauls
Cheers Jason, yes agreed the Epi does seem to sound a bit fatter - instinctively I put that down to the more 'robust' tailpiece... that may be complete nonsense though so I may have to test that theory at some point! :)
I’ve usually always found that Epi’s tend to have less highs. Some say muddy, some say warm. There’s a lot of things that can contribute. Different fret wire, different bridge saddle materials. And such.
If you listen with your eyes closed the transition between Gibson LP and Epi LP playing in this video you cannot tell which is which... :))). You just can't tell when the transition occurs. Everyone should take this test to not get fooled by their own eyes. Thank you, Sir, for being helpful and honest!
Exceedingly interesting dive . If only you frequented my local pub . I can imagine hours of craich from such a likeable raconteur. You have found your you tube niche and followers will too.
Thanks Paul, that’s appreciated. The only downside I can see from sharing a few pints with you would be the ridiculous ideas for videos you’d no doubt encourage me to make! 🤣 👍🎸
Amazing video mate! Been searching for a in-depth review for a really long time and this came in so handy. Both guitars sound great and your playing was really cool. Thanks a lot!! Cheers from Uruguay 🇺🇾🇺🇾
I got a Epiphone SG Modern Red. I can say it is as good as the Gibson Blueberry Fade I have and it has a phenomenal sustain. It feels more solid and quite hard to believe for $600 dollars thanks for your vids👍👍
The cracks in (both sides of) the Epiphone's neck at 20:20 suggest that it's had a fall, or been swung into something hard. Given that the poly finish is so much tougher than the Gibson's nitro, it must have been a hell of a knock. I always check this area when looking to buy a new guitar. Cracks here = instant reject. To see how many pieces the Epiphone's made from, would it be possible to look at the end grain around the body, or is there an opaque finish there? Regarding price differences: much of this must be down to labour costs, but in my experience, budget equipment always has inferior materials and components, and you get what you pay for. I chose a Squier CV 50s Strat over a Mexican one (didn't try a USA one that day) and while the CV is a fine playing guitar, the fretwire has turned out to be quite soft, and other components are just 'cheap'. With some aluminium foil shielding to reduce hum, it's still good enough to gig with, but I suspect a more expensive model would fare better. Maybe the Epiphone/Gibson comparison would throw up similar findings. Finally, the acid test for _any_ guitar, regardless of its price: with a clean tone, play the G string, twelfth fret, and see how long the note takes to decay. Play the same note on B/8 and D/15 and compare decays. G/12 will always be the shortest, but if it's noticeably short compared to the others, it can't be fixed and that guitar's a reject. It would be interesting to hear this comparison with both the Gibson and the Epiphone.
Thanks for comment! I think the lacquer cracks could have been caused by the nut moving... in any event not something I'm worried about personally. Its a 2 piece body which is good. Interesting test ideas I may try them! Cheers man.
I'd also inspect these cracks very closely. This is a very common way necks break on Epiphones and also other brands with this nut/headstock design. Don't know if it's still the case, but in the past Thomann sold a lot of guitars with this type of damage on ebay in Germany.
just discovered you and may I say,,,I myself am a epiphone, gibson fan and I'm waiting on my first epiphone les paul 50s cherry burst....so thank you for the information
The Epiphone seems like the better purchase from a playing point of view due to the same performance for less than a quarter ot the price. Aesthetically I prefer the headstock on the Gibson. I have a 91 black Standard bought new. It has been my main guitar since then and has been heavily gigged and recorded but I am not sure I would buy another as these days you do not have to spend that kind of money to get a quality instrument as has been demonstrated here.
Cheers Eugene, that’s the perfect answer really... if you already have a great original Gibson there’s just no need for another when you can buy a whole collection of other models instead. Your standard sounds awesome man I can feel the mojo from here! 👍😎
I to like the top wrap feel on my LPs as well. I tend to play my Epiphone LPs more than my Gibsons. They feel right in all the right places. lol… two of my Epiphone LPs I bought at pawn shops and new they were the ones immediately. They both cost $225. They were bought at different times both made in Korea. I had to have the Gibsons for my own satisfaction of ownership. But I hardly touch them anymore. The Epi’s are my work horses and always will be. Thank you
Great videos thanks so much for your efforts. I’ve bought the exact same Gibson as you review here and it’s a beautiful instrument. Several bits of the plastic including pickup rings had cracks in them like the screws had been over tightened. I had the option to send it back for exchange but I really bonded with it and liked the finished so opted for Gear4music to get replacement rings from Gibson. I patiently waited over 3 months for these but in current climate I understand the wait. Now the guitar is perfect. I replaced the output jack surround with a chrome one which to me made it more premium, but don’t plan any other upgrades. I’ve never spent so much on a guitar and hope to keep it as a forever guitar. I also own several Epiphone which are great value especially the new inspired by Gibson range. All of the screws for the truss rod covers on mine are wonky to so don’t suspect you did it in error on yours.
Big fan of the inspired by Gibson range but recently got a Gibson Les Paul 50s. For me, the difference in feel is night and day. My Gibson was really bright with the burstbuckers, so switched them for the Tonerider AC2 set for a smoother more vintage tone. The neck is great - not overly chunky at all, solid tuners and the finish is awesome. If you can, give a Gibson a go but… saying that, you really can’t go wrong with an Epiphone.
Sorry, don't mean to clog up your comments box, but these videos are quite interesting and revealing, got to give gibson the sound quality award on this one, but the finish! I would call defective, I've sprayed many gallons of lacquer in my days, never seen such a weak coating, thanks again for making theses videos, I look forward to them!
I’m a bit late to this but I thought I’d add this incase anyone is wondering. The marks appearing on the Gibson is mostly referred to as Milking I believe, it’s what we used to call it anyway. It is very common in that area under your arm when you play. Mine did the same when it was new and eventually came out by itself. Personally I kinda like it but there is a specific polish you can get for it, pmt sell it. I would say it will fetch out the mark on the back from the stand too. Thanks.
Once again, sir, you've made me appreciate Epiphone guitars even more. I'm also a bit of a fan boy, I own four of their creations so far (two LPs, one SG and a Casino). I've got a standard 50s on its way, finally found a nice burst, that purchase has been nearly 20 years in the making. My first electric was an Epiphone LP Standard ebony, I had seen one in a brown sunburst at the shop but by the time I saved all the money it was gone, so had to settle on a plain black one. Surprise surprise, it came with Gibson pups stock, so that got me going. Honestly, I think swapping those pups in a new Epi and throwing in Burstbuckers or what have you may elevate the sound of the guitar, and you'd still end up saving some bucks than if you go for "the real deal". To each his own, I'm not gonna deny that a Gibson LP has mojo, and it's still a dream for me that will come true one at some point, but for now Epiphone is saving the day! 😎
I used to own a Gibson Les Paul. I hated that nitro finish due to many of the reasons you mentioned. I now own an Epiphone Les Paul. I did change out the pickups and electronics, but I was very happy with the way it came.
I constantly stare at my guitars, I love hanging them on the wall because it comforts me to see them several times a day. I have a Paul Reed Smith Brushmaster with a 10 top that is absolutely stunning! I have a Gibson Les Paul in a Tobacco Burst that is beautiful too. I just enjoy looking at all of my guitars, still can’t believe I have them.
Hello what a great channel on youtube i just discovered it. Is actually a bassist but plays a bit of guitar as well. I have drawn the same conclusions about Gibson among others, they make good guitars but for the incredibly high price, they are priced high in Scandinavia too, so it is very poor quality control. You have really good thoughts and tests, but also reasoning from a musical philosophical perspective. And we as spectators get tips on repairs etc and learn a lot! Here I come back.
Great in depth dive as usual! I’m considering an epi 50s and was interested to see just how it stacks up against the real thing. I was surprised about the neck cavity difference and also the weight of the two tailpieces. Thanks for all the great info!
Great review (as usually I would say !), thank you for the way you let us free to make our proper opinion ... you have a real objective point of view and your explanations are very clear . Best regards from France ! You make my english comprehension improving a lot as much as I listen to your sweet british pronunciation, you've got a sort of Eric Clapton's sound voice ! I hope my english is not too bad to be understood !
I bought two Gibson LP Classics one cherry red the other honeyburst. Both beautiful guitars. I put a nick on the honeyburst right out of the gate. Oh well. The binding on my wine red Gibson LP Traditional has turned a dark orange over the years. Looks great. I got a Chibson LP $200 free shipping. Flawless paint, nice frets, plays perfect. Similar layout to the Epey you have-truss rod and neck angle the same smaller pots. Same factory in China?
I really enjoyed this video, well done. I've been on the fence for awhile now about buying my first Les Paul. This really helped me on my decision so kudos to you on such awesome content. Please keep making videos ;))
I think you will find that the braiding is the first layer below the plastic covering on the cable, on the the Epiphone, keep the reviews going, I bought an Epiphone les paul 50`s goldtop after this review , you were so right, what a guitar ,thanks
Hi Colin, and thanks for a great comparison of these two guitars. You’re right to say that for Les Paul fans, the Gibson Standard is the pinnacle we can practically aspire to. After several clones I finally came into enough money to get a Gibson LP Standard back in 2007. I was so in awe of actually owning my dream at the time that I didn’t inspect it closely enough when it arrived. But over my years of ownership I gradually spotted that the binding didn’t fit properly in places, there was a crack that appeared in the wood of the body near the jack socket and a crack appeared in the wood in the cut out (interestingly where there binding didn’t fit properly). Disappointing given this guitar never left my bedroom and was never dropped or dinged. I’m guessing this is in part due to the poor quality control that may have plagued Gibson in that period (it does seem that post 2019 builds are better) but also possibly that I got a good deal on this because the place I bought it from was selling ‘B’ stock without actually telling buyers that’s what they were getting (buyer beware !). I won’t mention the shop as they are still going and getting good reviews so maybe I was just unlucky. Anyway, before the body cracked any more I decided to trade my disappointing Gibson experience for an Epiphone Les Paul Plustop Pro in 2016. What a night and day experience for me. The finish on the Epi was flawless, and is still, it plays wonderfully following a setup by GAK where I bought it and I still love it as much as when I bought it 7 years ago. I occasionally drift off and think I’ll supplement it with a G&L ASAT or maybe replace it with an Epiphone 339, but then I pick the Les Paul up again and think about when would I actually grab the G&L instead of the LP and that I’d miss the feel of the LP if I swapped it for a 339. So your conclusion sums up my experience exactly - by all means aspire to a Gibson, but don’t feel short changed in any way if what makes sense to you (financially, robustness etc) is the Epiphone. Thanks for a great channel and providing a good excuse to grab a coffee and while away an hour or so each week.
Excellent review that has helped me to decide on my next guitar! Also, I have dealt a few times with Guitar Galleries and have also had very positive experiences. They are a very helpfuil group of guys.
I have an Epiphone Standard '50s and a 2017 Gibson Traditional T - the model that got rebranded as the Standard '50s. Love them both, but there's very, very little difference between them in sound or playability. In a blind test, I'd probably pick either of them about 50% of the time. The Epi is a LOT of bang for the buck and a truly great guitar.
I resisted the whole Les Paul thing for years. Ibanez (mainly Jems) and Parker Flys have been 'my bag'. Recently I gave in and bought an Epi LP Standard Pro which I 'pimped' to look like an LP HP model (various Chrome parts) and fitted a (home made) Jimmy Page wiring loom and Irongear Tesla Shark pups. It's a fine guitar but all it did was make me want 'the real deal' more. A 2018 Gibson LP Standard HP followed. What a fantastic piece of gear. Even opening the (composite) case is an event. It's like you said, I'm convinced they put some Vanilla scented narcotic in the Nitro that gets you addicted to them. It's become my current favourite guitar and I regularly 'perv' at it. Thoroughly enjoying your channel and the many deep dives. Keep up the great work!
What a brilliant video. This is brilliant content, great explanation on the details. Tempted on a new Epi Les Paul as my old one is bad now. It seems as if the Epi quality is so much better now.
Aloha and Mahalo again good show good info. I caught your 330 video a day late. Makes me think I may want one. Born in 1958. When I was 58 had a chance to buy a historic 58 LP Standard. Wife said no. So now I own a 58 Amos jb 58 custom epi korina explorer moderne fender CS 58 Strat 58 tele and 58 jazzmaster 60 anniversary. None the real deal but something I can afford.
Cheers Victor, Mahalo!... so you didn't get the 58 LP but it sounds like you sneaked in multiple 58's of far greater value under the wife's radar! Good play man! :)
@@theguitaristas she know about all except she hasn't seen the epi explorer yet. Still need the 335 and special or jr. The historic was $3200 in 2016. Can't afford one now
Wow!! First time i've 'tuned in' to your channel. What a superb session this was, great in depth insight into both guitars. I've had a Gibson Les Paul and sold it a few years ago, now just got hold of a Epiphone Les Paul Standard and I love it. Thank you so much for such an interesting 55 minutes. TopMan!!
Fabulous fabulous and very grateful for this effort. Telling as in NZ the Epiphones are readily available, somewhat market swamped. But your expose gives value that this man will not ignore.
My dream guitar is the Gibson Les Paul Standard '50s Gold Top. You are right about what guitarists think of Gibson ownership, at least in my experience. If I buy a Gibson one day, I'll make sure I 'deserve' it. Nice playing in the demos by the way! That outro was killer!
The only requirement for Gibson ownership is that you love the guitar. If you do that, you deserve the guitar. I say this as I await the delivery of my 2022 Gibson 50s Standard goldtop. :)
I was the same way when I bought my Les Paul standard 50s edition gold top. The fit and finish was absolutely immaculate. It played like a rock ‘n’ roll guitar. That’s the only guitar I play now. I’ve got a fender custom shop I don’t even touch now. I’ve become a huge fan of the short Gibson scale.
If i was spending my money, it would be the Epi all day long, which i have done when i bought a epi les paul standard pro plus top, which i love, bought secondhand for £200 totally unmarked. One thing i will say is i love the look of that top on the Gibson, which on most modern gibsons i don't, the burst seems to be blended in which i like, on a lot i have seen they are almost two different clours with no blending which i can't stand, so you have a good one there. PS, would love to see a show on you the presenter, where you from, what you play, so on and so on, your playing is fantastic, very tasteful.
Your videos that go in-depth in comparing the US-made vs. their less expensive analogue brethren are so interesting and full of useful information that I love. Please keep up the amazing work, mate!
Thanks man!
Very interesting for us "normal people", who can't afford to just buy the Gibson and eventually regret it then 😉
I agree with the Squid
Last weekend I saw The Eagles on Saturday and KISS on Sunday. Joe Walsh played an Epiphone Jared James Nichols model on a few songs and Tommy Thayer played his Epiphone Signature on a good 1/3rd of KISS's set. It made me smile very much seeing that. I'd say Epiphone's are giggable if 2 guitarists from 2 legendary bands were playing them.
Cheers man, that is irrefutable evidence if ever we needed it! ... plus those must have been some awesome shows! 🤘🎸😎
@@theguitaristas they were both fantastic. I was especially impressed by The Eagles. Absolute professionals in every sense of the word.

Hey Nevin, do glad you found us!.... thanks for the kind words and support it is appreciated! :)
Agreed! I also loved the jam at the beginning of this video. Am I an idiot for not knowing what tune it is or was it just jamming?

Re; the wiring on these two... I did get it arse about face in the film and as a matter of fact it's the Epiphone that has the proper 50's wiring and not the Gibson. @@donge9589 Tempted but undecided... is it different enough to warrant £800 in the interests of research? 🤔
Have just discovered your vids and channel through research into one of these 50s Epiphones. Instant subscribe!
Got it
Thanks!

I cant tell you how much I appreciate the honesty and depth of the comparisons on your channel. Having owned many Gibsons and Epiphones over the years, I currently own 3 Epiphones and no Gibsons. Cheers William, I really appreciate your support and kind words! It’s certainly nice to own or have owned and play a Gibson but as you say the difference in price is so much these days, and the competition so fierce that there are probably smarter options! 😎👍🎸

Neat!
Cheers Dante, thanks for sharing that mate glad to have helped! 😁👍

Cheers man!... certainly seems that this guitars damage vs playtime ratio is unfeasibly high! :)
That's funny to think of a surfboard as "suicidal". When new guitars don't stay in tune, I tell my wife that it's because the wood doesn't realize it's a guitar yet.
Another awesom video. Funny and informative. Great playing. Looking forward to next weeks.

The OP stated those things from their own perspective.
Think about it,...you people that have a problem with it are basically demanding that if a person says that Gibson is better than their other guitars, they had better put a disclaimer in there like,.."of course this is just my opinion"
If you already understand that it is an opinion based subject,..why the fuss ? The opinion part goes without saying
I think most of us know the answer to that question.
@@automatoncollectives7237
Point taken.
@@automatoncollectives7237
I hear you. However, there is nothing wrong, whatsoever, with what he wrote here. Unless I am missing something.
@@automatoncollectives7237
You addressed his comment as,...."that's nonsense"
@@automatoncollectives7237
I don't mean to belabor anything but statements regarding subjective topics are a reality because they are unique to a person's perspective.
If he said Gibson is the best guitar or that his Gibson is better than all the other makes that he has tried,..its all true. At the same time, if you stated the opposite,..it's all true.
You can debate forevermore and it doesn't necessarily mean that anyone is right or wrong, even with bold declarations such as "Gibson is the best guitar"
Its fair to argue that in lots of ways but you become wrong when you start to represent the other person's statement as objective or trying to make it objective.

Cheers.
The Gibson sound more blanced and fuller, unplugged and plugged to my ears. Good video, thx!
Well done sir. Never seen someone dig into the details of the component before.

Thanks Olivier, glad to hear you are also having a positive experience with this guitar!
Cheers man, I did wonder about the UV qualities thanks for that info. Do you think maybe they have still not got the formula quite right? :)

That was the best most honest review regarding Gibson and epiphone ive ever watched!
I just can’t deal with guitars that weigh 10lb 🥵
Yeah I agree. And with an Epi, if you ever want to sell it you're more or less stuck trading it in. With a Gibson, if you buy second hand, you can trade, buy, sell without ever losing money after the initial buy. It's just far more guitar, on every level and decently worth having if you play Les Pauls
Very enjoyable video. Great to see you jamming at the end and enjoying it!!
Great video brother! Honestly sound wise there's not much at all between the 2. At times I thought the Epiphone sounded just slightly fatter. ❤️
And such.
@@theguitaristas well I'm going to roll a spliff and have a party with my cat then🤘

and am more of a Gibson user
but i do love my SG

Andertons have just done a Gibson factory tour video so you can see exactly how that Gibson was constructed .Its very interesting
@@ingos5233 Thanks for your concern dude but like I said it doesn't worry me as I have looked and it's just the lacquer.

I come back just for your solo parts. Sounds absolutely incredible
🙏😊
Rob Chapman has really let himself go.
😂🤘
Lmao...

Cheers Clive, I agree the finish really should not be that soft but don’t even try telling Gibson that... this is how we like them apparently! 🤷♂️
@@theguitaristas none of my business, but wouldn't that be covered by warranty? it's just wrong, did that mat you were working on print the back also?
@@cliveburgess4128 Warrant claim?...not a chance! 😂The back is ok but need to be a bit more careful I think.
Thanks.
Another genuine but humorous video and tutorial. Thank you so much. Keep ‘em comin
A good unbiased and honest review mate.
Cheers Greg!
Great video insights, and wonderful playing :), thanks
Cheers, my pleasure! 😁👍
I used to own a Gibson Les Paul. I hated that nitro finish due to many of the reasons you mentioned. I now own an Epiphone Les Paul. I did change out the pickups and electronics, but I was very happy with the way it came.
Fantastic deep dive comparison. 👏 Always great information shared here. THANK YOU SIR. I really appreciate your insight.
Yep that's the thing they are a functioning work of art that never ceases to please. Cheers Nevin! :)
Very nice video full of details and lots of infos. Thanks for that!
Hello
what a great channel on youtube i just discovered it.
Cheers man glad you found us thanks for the support and kind words! 😁🙏
Thanks man that’s appreciated! 🙏😎… and don’t worry your English is very good and way better than my French! 😁👍
Just subscribed...your work is amazing and now I know more about my guitars....Thank you.
Cheers Pedro thanks for the sub and support!
Cheers Peter, thanks for supporting!
I think you will find that the braiding is the first layer below the plastic covering on the cable, on the the Epiphone, keep the reviews going, I bought an Epiphone les paul 50`s goldtop after this review , you were so right, what a guitar ,thanks
Cheers man that’s appreciated!
Love your vids sir very informative for an aging guitar geek like myself greetings from Bonnie Scotland
Cheers Tom, thanks for comment and support it’s appreciated!
Love your channel! Very informative and meditading!
you are my go to....thank you! I appreciate your reviews
Great video my friend! It's like you knew exactly what I wanted to see. Keep up the great work!
Cheers man that's appreciated! :)
Cheers man, thanks for the support its appreciated!
What a brilliant video. This is brilliant content, great explanation on the details. Tempted on a new Epi Les Paul as my old one is bad now. It seems as if the Epi quality is so much better now.
Thanks for the kind words that's appreciated! definitely worth checking out this 'inspired by' range they seem to be a cut above!
I discovered your channel just last week. I really like your land back British style. Keeper them coming... please 🙂
Cheers Christian glad you found us! 😎👍🎸
Can't afford one now
Great Video! First time to see this channel and just subscribed. Loads of in-depth information!
Excellent!... Thanks for comment and sub glad you found us! :)
I picked up mine in Heritage Cherry yesterday. Sounds great but looks FANTASTiC.
You made a very good video here.. Thanks for posting it !
You're a legend mate, keep up the great work
Cheers Alex 😎👍
Always great unbiased reviews !
