I just discovered your channel, and believe you give the best reviews of guitars that I have heard so far (and I have heard many.) You convinced me to buy the 1959 Standard, and it arrives tomorrow!! I'm so excited. My second Epiphone Les Paul. The first one was in '91 when I was 14, and the one coming tomorrow happens to be the same exact color, being the Cherry Burst. Thanks for the video!!
How’re you liking yours? I got mine about the same time as you and love it! I have a Gibson explorer and I find myself going to my Epiphone more and more. My Gibson isn’t inferior but this thing is absolutely fantastic!
Great part 2, I'm surprised at how small the gap is sound wise between the two. It's great that you can get in the ball park for a lot less. I can't wait to hear the result of the pickup swap your planning for part 3. I doubt I'll be able to pick the 59 up, by the time I can afford one i reckon they will have been snapped up. I may opt for the new epiphone slash signature version which is around the same price but with Alnico 2 pickups in ,given that I already have the 50s goldtop it'd give me two slightly different animals.
Cheers Paul, that makes good sense as 50’s is real close in a lot of ways so you’d probably not ‘need’ both.. those Slash signatures look cool don’t get me started! 😁✌️
@@theguitaristas I imagine they are similar to the 50s standard construction wise just with the different voiced pickups. I actually ruined a vintage lemon drop by slapping some slash seymour Duncan's in. I say ruined as although the sound was fantastic and really great, it wasn't possible to retain the out of phase sound in the middle position.
I reckon so but maybe not long neck tenon?... and as you know that is where all the tone comes from! 😜🤔 just played my vintage lemon drop... sounds good but fretting out everywhere so needs a bit of love... 😎🎸👍
I enjoyed this and it further supports what I have always believed, that there is no need to spend £1000's on a Gibson if you want the Les Paul sound. Guitar collecting and playing for most of us is nothing but a luxury so if an Epiphone gets as close as this and you only have to spend £700 then you are on to a winner. The majority of the extra cost you will spend on a Gibson is for the made in the USA badge, Gibson history and heritage, Gibson employee wages and the additional US environmental and legal legislation that has a big impact on production cost. Of course none of the above effects the sound and playability of a guitar but does massively effect the price of a guitar.
There are good Epiphones out there, especially nowadays. But trust me when I say that there’s something about the fit, finish, and playability of a Gibson that isn’t the same as Epiphone in general. But with that being said, Epiphone has stand out models like this one that are great guitars. Also, with that being said, somebody told me once that if you want a Gibson Les Paul, no matter what Epiphone you get you’re always going to be comparing it to a Gibson guitar, and you’ll never have exactly what you want no matter how good the Epiphone might be because of the fact that it says “Epiphone” and has a different headstock. Basically, get what makes you happy and play the shit out of it.
Now watching!!, thank you for all the nitty gritty details now I don'have to open my Epi 59, watch and finish all the commercials only way I can give back for your good work for us, will be waiting for the part 3.. ♡♤◇♧.
Thanks that’s really appreciated!... I think it’s ok to skip the ads though if you don’t need what they selling 😁 they still pay us for serving them up! Part three in production now! 👍😎🎸
You deserve more subs! i'm really enjoying your style of reviewing and i think we all do. Sometimes i even just leave your vids to play in the background even i already watched em, lol. Cheers! 😁👌🏻
I really enjoy your videos. What with mortgages, bills, and family, I can't afford the Gibson R8, but it's good to know that the Epi gets fairly close. I'd be interested in videos you could make about Japanese made Les Pauls: Edwards, Greco, etc.
Cheers Stevo, I certainly will if I come across any... my first Les Paul was a Japanese Aria Pro II copy in 1978 so I’d love to revisit that and find out what that was really like, pretty good as I recall. I traded it eventually for Gibson SG and my life has been tainted ever since! 🤷♂️😎👍🎸
Fancy reviewing the Orville? It’s a one off. Has some special mods that make it unique. Best lester I ever played hands down. I can get some photos to you if your interested?
@@josepharmstrong4639 Hey Joseph!... I really appreciate the offer but its a bit too complicated borrowing others beloved guitars! One day though we may get into some guitar show or other live action and maybe you can bring along to show me? I look forward to that! Cheers man.
@@theguitaristas oh btw, your R8 gives out a much more pure clarity tone compare to the epi '59. Which I would say epi is no way near to the real historic line ups. But, their quality seemed to improve nowadays. Thank you for making this great review sir.
great compare and contrast. The epi stacks up very well when taking its cost into account. As a person who cares not for the branding Im ok with losing the 5% of sound difference if its a 4th of the cost. Cheers
loving my epi 1959 but y’all should check out some custom shops, it’s not really a sound difference, the feel & the quality of craftsmanship are really special, I think any guitar player would appreciate them!
@@stricknine8623 That’s interesting, because that was exactly my dilemma as I was planning to “acquire” this Gib alp STD 60s this Year but then this Epi came up... I’d probably go with this Epi and probably save more “money$” maybe for next Year’s acquisition. I’d like to please hear more if you could, assuming that you are able to compare between these 2 fine ladies! What is your LP lover? Thanks’n cheers, mate.
another brilliant vid. This is my go to channel atm. Looking forward to part 3 and I am a Tele guy! Would be interested to see a comparison with just changing the bridge hardware, even before the pups have been changed. Part 2.5 was excellent as well. Used to go into Chandlers on my way to work - another great shop missed!
Firbird still on back order. Bought the lp custom last yr. Some electrical issues but swapped out the electronics. Put a jb4 in. Preferred the probucker. Today, I came across an epi 59 in lemonburts 250 off plus a case. What a dream. Blows the custom out of the water. I feel like im cheating on my custom. I love it. The custom was a bday gift. This thing came perfect out of the box. I mean perfect. I wasn't planning on being this surprised or happy. Damn what guitar. 2 yrs interest free payments. I know im constantly thanking you. You never let me down.
I think you’re right my friend i’ve just got the Epiphone 1959 dark aged like yours fantastic value for the money...... The frets had levelling problems at first but after that was put right, Wow what a fantastic guitar it is !!!!! 🎼🎸🎶👍🏴
Hi. Thanks for the video. I note that you responded to another post suggesting that you take a look at Vintage Japanese guitars. I own two Aria Pro II Les Pauls. One 1977 and one 1980 (together with a couple of Fender JVs) Both are amazing. My friend owns a Greco Les Paul and Fender JVs. I would be very happy for you to compare these guitars to Gibson, or just review them if you're interested. Where are you in England? I'm in Kent. Thanks. JT
Hey John...I'm not so very far from you as it happens just over the water in Southend! That's really kind offer and good to know as you don't see many (if any) of the Aria Pro II LP's - I'd love to see a photo of the '77 to see if it's like the one I bought... in '77 I think! email address here is: studio@theguitaristas.com but be warned I will probably try and buy it from you! Cheers, and thanks for comment 👍😎🎸
Ordered an Epiphone 1959 back in February and still waiting with most recent update another month or two, That said, looking forward to receiving it. Want to thank you for your thorough comparison and also compliment you on your skill playing and your music choices. Outstanding!
I'm way behind the 8 ball with my comment, (2yr old post) but, oh well. I still want to compliment you on the lead bit around the 33 min mark. That was Georgia On My Mind wasn't it? Sounded lovely
@@ewal8556 I went all out and stripped the hardware off and used t cut then used kyser guitar polish, looks absolutely superb. So much better than the horrid dusty, rough Finnish.
Nice episode! I suppose the real deal is in the feel. Does one resonate more when certain chords or notes are struck? (especially without an amp behind it?) I would be interested in seeing you do a double blind test. Of course, you'd need someone to assist, but that could help eliminate any bias towards the more expensive outlay of funds. Just using your fingers or ears may reveal another side of the equation. Thanks for sharing our journey with us!! 🍻
Recently found your channel and subscribed. Great reviews and excellent playing. However, can I humbly suggest more lighting when you are filming? It’s a bit dark… I find myself wishing I could flip on the lights! Looking forward to more from you!
Thanks Robert that’s appreciated. Good to hear that feedback... I constantly try to tweak and improve the lighting and it’s a struggle to get it right sometimes , but I expect it will improve and become more consistent in time! Bests 😎👍🎸
No worries about the tailpiece studs, sir. There are metal bushings in that R8 top. They don't have a flange on top--they're more recessed into the top, so they're not as obvious as the ones on the Epi '59. If you look close, you'll see that there's finish on the top of the bushings. That's how my '82 30th Anniversary Gold Top is, and it's modeled after a '57. With no metal threaded bushings, there would be no way to ground the tailpiece. Another fine vid, btw.
I bought the Epiphone 59 yesterday from Andertons at a very good price. My only gripe was the neck pick-up seems to have a lot of side ways movement. I personally think the spring on the adjuster is not strong enough, but was assured they are all the same.
"that was quite interesting" - yup, your own words sums up your video :D thanks for making these. And youre selling the forthcoming third video in this series really, really well ! :,D got me on the edge of my seat almost to hear them next pu's !
Not sure if others have commented already but it sounded like the bridge post on the Gibson was screwing into metal in the body to me and the threads looked like machine threads vs wood screws, but it was hard to say for sure from camera distance. They did sound very similar. Which is a big plus for Epi. Awesome job as usual! A guitar geek's dream video. Cant wait to see the pickup change effect now.
Look, are you going gig at the Pub? Yes? Well then, if you sound good then all go home happy. Nobody in the crowd says "Bloody great band but I'm pissed off 'cause I didn't see Gibson on the headstock." Epiphone's 59 does just that - sounds great!
Love this video. I bought a 1950's Epi Les Paul. It's very nice. Pro Buckers. Might change them one day? Great soloing Matem. Very soulful. What was the song at 33.30 and the ending? It's familiar but I can't place it. Thanks in advance. Can't wait for the follow-up video. See you next week.
Thanks man that's appreciated! The 50s is great did you see our review?... I think I will do a comparison with the Pro-buckers and some other pups, burstbuckers etc to see how much can be gained / lost on upgrades. So that piece of music is inspired by the fabulous Peter Green's 'need your love so bad'... seemed appropriate for the Bursts!
great review as normal. I see you have the Gibson anti damage mat out again! ha , wonder what the Epiphne mat woudl look like ,would it look more like a table top ?
Everytime I pick up my Epi "59, I smile at how well it plays, feels, and how much money I saved. It's all I need for a Les Paul. 😃 The money I saved, went to buying a PRS SE 594.
This is helping cure my GAS for a Gibson. I have and Eli LP that I love (my wife gave it to me for our wedding), but I have always lusted for a Gibson. I have played some Gibsons before and they are quite nice, but I kept thinking that the Gibby's were not that much better that what I already had. While nice to look at, the Nitro is so fragile. Maybe I am just better off playing Epi and just get some extra practicing in. Last summer I upgraded my amp, and all of a sudden - all of my guitars sounded better. Hmmm, maybe that is a secret to tone . . . balancing the guitar and the amp.
Great comparison. Really liked this video! Went into great detail on everything. I'm looking into getting one these, wonder if I can get historically correct rings for an Epi? 🤔
Cheers Tim, very good question... when I pull the pups out I will measure and check where the holes are to see if they fit right on. Watch out for part 3!
Very well done. I just purchased the ‘59 Epi last week in aged dark cherry. I bought in Canada and was about 1300 dollars total. I am primarily a Strat man however love LPs and SGs as well. I was quite surprised at the quality and sound of this guitar. I had to tweak the set up and I use Elixir Optiweb 10-46s. I have never had an Epi LP that I liked (do not like those slim D taper necks) until this one. I subscribed to your channel and very much enjoyed watching your laid back, real simple review. Cheers !
Thanks for another informative review, I always enjoy your commentary. After seeing this it makes perfect to get the Epi but here I am saving up for a Custom shop R9 🤷♂️
Thank you for doing this series. Really great review. I finally found an Epi and it will be here in a couple of days. Really excited. BTW, I know exactly what you mean about guitar shop playing or in front of the red light.
When you put that insulation tape on your nitro finished custom, I almost had a bloody heart attack!😂Love your videos. I'm not that good of a player, but that Epiphone is seriously flirting with my bank balance. Great video - many thanks.
I went to a cheap "mall" music store and they had a $900 epiphone LP. I asked why an epiphone would cost $900 and he handed it down to me. 15 minutes later I left with it and has been the BEST guitar I have EVER owned. In the LP category, that includes a Classic, Standard and a custom shop R0 that weighed 8lbs. None of those stayed...this one will.
If I wasn't watching the video, I would have picked the Epi as best sounding, when you played it I heard Dicky Betts, the 59 I heard a bog standard guitar, quite surprising! look forward to the next round.
I ordered the Epiphone JB Lazarus 59 LP. Nearly identical to this guitar, with a different top and JB branding on the case and COA. Can’t wait to get it.
When I bought my R7 in 2006, it was $1950, only a few hundred more than a production line USA, so I didn’t have any reservations gigging it at dive bars. If it was today, I’d gig the Epi and let the custom shop appreciate in value. They’ve become more of an investment, like a piece of art, than a practical gigging guitar.
So I bought the epiphone 59’ and upgraded the bridge and tailpiece with Faber. It sounds awesome! So I had to buy a Gibson Standard 60’s USA not custom shop. Let’s face it a Gibson is a beautiful work of art yet after 3 months I find myself reaching for the 59’.
Hmmm... Finally finished watching this episode. Thanks for the informative video. My Epi 59' just arrived and I did a quick test. It actually sounds quite a lot different to my Gibson USA LP Standard Plus 2014 which is modded with SD Antiquity PAF and 50s circuit with PIO caps. The biggest difference, IMHO, is the feeling when playing them. Nobody mention about the fret size difference. I think this video is probably the only one. IMHO The Gibson feels a lot better. Having said that, I got my Epi for quite low price, with hardcase etc. Looking forward to finish the Part 3 video.
@@theguitaristas Haha. My Gibson USA is actually still in very mint condition. I think the nitro finish simply feels very different. I can imagine a Custom Shop LP would be even better. I think my Epi 59' needs a proper setup before it has a chance to compete with it. Having said that, for the money (I paid $6xx), it's still worth it.
How is the fret work on these newer epi LP's? were they leveled, crowned and dressed or just leveled? I have not seen many sub $2000 guitars that have complete fret work done. the majority go out the door just leveled and have sharp edges.
@@These_go_to_eleven_1959 Well, I can only speak based on my unit, which was purchased unseen from China, via a friend. The frets are supposedly levelled in most frets. I'm not sure they are crowned or not, because the frets are narrower than what I'm used to. More like an inverted V shape. When it arrived, some frets felt quite rough in high frets, especially from 15th and beyond. The same goes to fret edges. They are OK in most area except higher notes. Definitely not like my Gibson USA LP standard plus 2014, which was flawless. Having said that, the Gibson USA Studio Faded 2016T that I had was worse than the Epi 59'. I would say the Epi 59' is comparable to a Jackson X series (Indonesian), which was the most recent new guitar that I bought before this Epi 59'. Due to the pandemic situation here, I could not send my guitar for full setup by a pro. I bought a Nomad Frine fret polishing kit (which is a polishing compound) and polished the frets. I have zero experience doing wood work, so I thought it's a bit risky for me to try polishing using any micromesh/grit paper. From my eyes, the difference between before and after polishing is not really significant (the stock frets had no oxidation anyway). But it made a lot of difference in terms of feeling. Vibrato and bends are a lot smoother now. I also lowered the action.
That R8 has a pretty shallow neck angle. I think the A=3 noted the neck Angle as 3 degrees. Also the R8 has bushings for the tailpiece posts, they're just covered with finish. The finish can come off over those bushings, usually in a ring shape so people call them donuts
Hey Kent, thanks for that info man! It makes sense that there are bushings but I just couldn’t find that info anywhere. Yes that also makes perfect sense A=3 as it’s specs are 4 right? And is definitely shallow as you can see by how high the bridge sits. Cheers and thanks for comment and support!
Complimenti e grazie. Ciao dall'italia. 🇮🇹 🎸
Love both guitars. I own an Epiphone 59. Very nice. I bought the cherry burst. Killer guitar for the money. Just wondering if you've ever checked out a PRS SE custom 24? I own two of them. Another great budget guitar. 😎
To me very close and I've been playing LP's since 1972. I can say this quality control today is so much better. When I bought my 72' Tobacco Road in 72' it needed a crap load of work. Today you buy a guitar Epi or Gibson and pretty much they are really ready to go except for personal choices.
I just paid off my 2020 Gibson Les Paul 50's in Dark Cherry Burst and it's a killer guitar. But i must admit the itch to get the Epi just because having "just one more" guitar is always the correct choice !! Great video here and i'm looking forward to seeing the next with the Monty's PAF's in it. Cheers

I modified an Epi LP years ago using some 70s Ibanez parts or something (from a luthier friend) so that the posts directly into the (dowels that I added). It did stop the buzzing!! And wouldn't it be cheaper for Epi to just drill the posts directly into the wood as opposed to adding studs, an added part? I've always wondered this. Anyway, I sure like your videos mate. Seem like you put a great deal of effort & time into them, and it shows. I so like your demos too... it's my ki d of style & too it's a style that highlights well whatever guitar or pickup you're referring to. Well done 👏🏻

It started as a log with pickup attached with a neck and strings nuthin's changed Gibson corporation have been ripping us off for years .
You just explained why you should buy a Gibson.
@@patrickmccutcheon8860 Of course it's to be expected but a good working guitar does the job you don't need a Lamborghini to get to work is the point.

By far, the most in depth comparison I have seen. Well done sir!
Thanks Martin that’s appreciated! 😎👍🎸
Cheers! 😁👌🏻
I appreciate that!

What a specific comparison review! Great work! I do really enjoy your review. What a lovely R8 you got there.
Cheers that’s appreciated! 👍😎🎸
Cheers
No doubt , I’m in agreement with you 100%. You’d have to have a hole in your head to think otherwise.
It obviously stacks up very well with cost ignored. Then,...Enter the cost difference into the equation and the choice is easy.
loving my epi 1959 but y’all should check out some custom shops, it’s not really a sound difference, the feel & the quality of craftsmanship are really special, I think any guitar player would appreciate them!

I own a 1960 Re-issue LP custom shop Ice Tea Burst.
It is a phenomenal instrument but not my favorite Les Paul to play.
I can almost smell the pine trees in Georgia. Great playing again.
I love that burst on the Epiphone. It's a sexy guitar!

another brilliant vid. This is my go to channel atm. Looking forward to part 3 and I am a Tele guy! Would be interested to see a comparison with just changing the bridge hardware, even before the pups have been changed. Part 2.5 was excellent as well. I dig my 59 Epi, but my heart goes to my 50s standard Gibson. Such a different feel for them being so similar.

Beautiful guitars by the way
Great video, really enjoyed it, how do you feel about doing an epiphone goldtop and epiphone 59 comparison,
Cheers John... yes I think it’s gonna happen! 👍😎🎸
It was that sweet tone.

Ok so I just purchased my 59 I’ll have it in a few days and I absolutely cannot wait thank you for the awesome review
Nice one Chris let us know how you get on! 😆👍
@@theguitaristas will do for sure

No, I’m pretty sure they screw directly into the wood as unlikely as that sounds.
@@theguitaristas Yes I saw your 50's video. Looking forward to future comparisons!!!!
great review as normal.
😃 The money I saved, went to buying a PRS SE 594.
great series on the Epiphone 59 wonder how it would sound just putting the gibson tailpiece on the epiphone
Came for the reviews....stayed for the playing...enjoy your style very much...
Thanks dude that's appreciated!
Love your channel it’s quite smart and your great!

Great video as always, enjoyed your playing as well.
Cheers !
Thanks James, nice one... like a lot of others discovering that these Epiphone’s are a cut above those of old! 😎🎸👍

I think the difference between high gain versions was huge but the epiphone sounded amazing when clean. very interesting.

I own this exact Epiphone, same color & all. It is an amazing guitar.
I ordered the Epiphone JB Lazarus 59 LP. Nearly identical to this guitar, with a different top and JB branding on the case and COA. Can’t wait to get it.
Hey Jerome.. check out our review of Lazarus coming this Friday!
@@theguitaristas I’ll definitely check that out. I’m expecting mine to show up by then 😀
I've owned many Epi's since 83. Loved them all. The two best were the White Fang and the Lazarus.
@@shanebolender851 Awrsome to hear! I’m still waiting on mine. Was hoping to get it today or tomorrow.
Nice playing demonstration 🎉🎉🎉🎉!!!!!
You have the best vibe I have experienced in a while.
😊🙏
So I bought the epiphone 59’ and upgraded the bridge and tailpiece with Faber. It sounds awesome! So I had to buy a Gibson Standard 60’s USA not custom shop. Let’s face it a Gibson is a beautiful work of art yet after 3 months I find myself reaching for the 59’.
Very smart move! the stop tail and bridge are really the only things i would replace as well.
I know it makes the tone better overall.
The first run of Epiphone 59's had the tall pickup rings. I have the AMS exclusive Aged Southern Fade - it came stock with the tall pickup rings.
Cheers Jeremy, good info! 😎👍🎸
Brilliant review just ordered the last one I could find which was an ex demo which had a neck break interested to see if this still sounds as good
Nice one!... sounds like a bargain maybe too?
Great video!! I think the A3 sticker is for Custombucker with Alnico 3 magnets?
Ah cheers Kenny that makes sense. Thanks for comment! 👍😎🎸

Complimenti e grazie. Ciao dall'italia. 🇮🇹 🎸
Ultimately there isn't £3k worth of difference. I love my Epi 59. Such amazing value.

Both sound great but I just love that Gibson finish!
To me very close and I've been playing LP's since 1972. I can say this quality control today is so much better. When I bought my 72' Tobacco Road in 72' it needed a crap load of work. Today you buy a guitar Epi or Gibson and pretty much they are really ready to go except for personal choices.
Cheers man that’s a good point and reminder that their QC has always been hit and miss! 😎👍
I just paid off my 2020 Gibson Les Paul 50's in Dark Cherry Burst and it's a killer guitar. But i must admit the itch to get the Epi just because having "just one more" guitar is always the correct choice !! Ah yes I completely get that... interest free credit I’m guessing? That’s how I own all of my CS guitars, it’s just like ‘saving up’ but you don’t have to wait! 😁👍 It would be silly not to take full advantage if you can eh? 😜 cheers dude good luck resisting that itch! 😂👍😎
Love all your reviews. Thanks
