Colin I’m so glad this was a shoot out and not a new review, cause I’ve got both, not because I wanted them but because I needed them. Please stop showing me guitars I need, or just carry on with this important service. Cheers
I got a '59 in Limited Edition Lemon Burst (ironically looks just like the Lazarus) from Guitar Center here in the US. I played the floor model and fell in love with it, then found out it was on sale for $250 off - even cheaper than the regular burst finish models! I was so happy to bring it home. Looking for videos on it is what actually brought me to your channel, so thanks for doing what you do, Colin!
Sound-wise its definitely a wash and majority would say the Lazarus is the better looking one but I am so attracted to that dark burst! Especially when it hits the light in certain angles. Nice comparison, as usual! 🥇🏆
It used to be 'FRIDAY - The end of another work week!'.....Now it is 'FRIDAY- A new video from The Guitaristas Channel!' That's worth a day off to watch!
@@theguitaristas Just keep on keeping on...I find your content and delivery very refreshing and a throw back to the players I used to follow in my youth on the local scene.....
I only found your channel and videos about 2 weeks ago so I get to watch one every day till I can catch up! In the meantime I went and got the Epi 59 and I absolutely love it! Again I want to thank you for your videos! I've learned more about guitars in the past 2 weeks than in all the years I've been playing! Best channel on RUclips!!! Thank you! Thanks for putting a smile on my face every morning 😁
The Aged Southern Fade Burst '59s have IMHO the best tops on any of the new Epiphone Les Paul's. Some of the ones I've seen on forums are unbelievable for a veneer. Mines pretty decent and am very glad to have it.
Just out of interest. I've worked with some of the most amazing cabinate makers in the UK. Almost all the furniture they make is with veneers. It's far more stable than solid wood flame timber. I made a solid wood flamed Telecaster many years ago. I took it from 80% humidity in the North of Spain to the 30% humidity in the South and within a year it was buckled and twisted in every conceivable direction. It was a flame neck also. Which twisted so badly it pushed the truss rod through the back of the neck. I've just bought a 59 today based on your reviews. I'm delighted it has a veneer. I'm also happy it's not cellulose lacquer it's way better protected with the poly finish from humidity now I'm back up north. I love your reviews and general chit chat. Great job.
Another point worth mentioning is a scarf joint is stronger than a solid neck. When cutting a solid neck the grain gets shorter in the neck headstock area . That's why Gibson are notorious for cracking at the neck. Glued wood is stronger at the joint than the wood itself. So if you have quarter sawn wood running the length of the neck, then a scarf joint with the headstock also having grain run the length of the head stock you have a much stronger neck.
@@theguitaristas I watch all your reviews. You have your content spot on. It's your personality and honesty which makes it entertaining and informative.
Love your channel! As a gearhead, I can sit and watch it for hours. One thing that strikes me is that all of the gear you review sounds like you. Thinking back, I can say the same about the other RUclips players and myself as well. I love your comment at the end that the two guitars are basically the same. Should you get both? Definitely!
I'd probably go for the Lazarus based on the way it looks, though they both sound brilliant. That being said, I can't stand the so called VOS finish on either guitar, specially on the 59: it's almost like somebody accidentally dropped a dab of engine grease on that top and then tried to get rid of it by wiping it off with a cloth...
I have the dark one. I'm not into glossy guitars at all, but I agree the finish doesn't look great. I really think they should just stop calling it "worn" and call it satin. Good news is when I play it I don't really see the finish.
Hello Colin! Don’t worry about those other channels: I watch those but I wait for yours! Love my Lazarus! I have seen some rather bland tops, and I was nervous what I would get, but mine looks like yours - highly recommend! See you next week.
Couldn’t agree more! As I’ve gotten more into collecting gear, I’ve realized when one has to choose between two guitars, the answer is always both. 😁 I like the flame on the Lazarus, but I prefer the dark burst color on the 59’. Would love to see them do a nice flames veneer with that darker burst.
I just got my 59 lemon burst after so many years of looking for it again. I once sold it when I was a teenager and regretted it!! So glad to buy it back after hunting it down for YEARS! So id personally say it’s not as easy to find as you’d think. The limited edition lemon burst one took me around 11years to find !
Normally I dont like sunburst guitars infact it could be said I hate them! but this 59 has me salivating, I thought long and hard why this is and I think it has something to do with the satin finish, Epiphone are turning out some really nice guitars these days, some of the lower end models IMO are not worth their ticket price but you get this with most brands. Great video! I really enjoyed this
The one I've been waiting for 👍🏻👍🏻 Good stuff, Colin! Laz is still available in OZ, but at $1879AUD, they don't seem to be moving. I did pay $1550AUD for the '59, which is as far as I would stretch for an Epiphone, probably.
Fantastic... I like to buy Lazarus, just because it resembles to the Paul Kossoff 59...Koss is my favourite guitarist👍👍👍🎸🎶🎸🎶... And now let's see this new video... You always say and show us interesting things... Cheers👍👍👍
I’ve got a 50s Standard with what Sweetwater said is a AAA flame top. Of course, it’s a veneer, but it’s actually flamed maple, and it is so nice. The flame actually disappears when looking at different angles.
This is one of the comparisons I've been waiting for and you didn't disappoint as always, Colin! 👏 Both great guitars as expected, the Lazarus got more mixed reviews at Thomann's though. But your final decision just got me 😆 Keep on rocking 🎸
Cheers Alan, I can only say what I think and speak of the guitar in front of me, so always good to look at a cross section of reviews and decide who you trust… I am honoured! 😆👍👍
I took your suggestion and got both, why not? I like both of them. The finish on my ‘59 feels better than the Lazarus. I really enjoy your videos! Cheers!
I purchased a Lazarus at Sweewater last week for $899.99 and man does thing look and sound fantastic!!! After watching this video I couldn’t be more stoked about my Christmas gift to me😉 Cheer mate!!
Andertons have released a 59 lemon burst finish and I just got mine delivered today. Looks similar to the Lazarus but the flame top looks better on Lazarus I’d say. But all the same I’m over the moon with it. Stunning guitar
what are you playing at 19:34? its beautiful. Bought a Laz last weekend should be here tomorrow, super stoked. Love your channel, respect your opinions, keep on Jammin.....
Ordered my Lazarus from Andertons on a pre order mid December 21, collected it 5th Jan 22. Staggered it was available so quickly. Love it to bits. Would also like the 59, but I am now thinking that as they are so close, I may do an upgrade on my 2015 Epiphone Les Paul instead. Really lovely iced tea burst, great flame veneer, but want to sand back or dull down the thick poly finish to make it more satin & change pick ups. It is more a 60s neck & already put 60s knobs on it. Looks the part, but could be better, especially in the playing department. Great post again Colin. Still fingers crossed that a bright spark at Epiphone decides to do a 50s, P90 Gold top, even better with the lighter coloured back.
Excellent review (and channel). It’s interesting, at Guitar Center (website) they are taking Lazarus reserves for $899, but have a used one listed for $1,249. Thanks for your great insight, and humor. Cheers from Arizona!
Good news for those of us in the US. Musician’s Friend informed me this morning that the Lazarus is still available for pre-order and will be back in stock on 7/30/22.
Hi, Thanks for this comparison! Did you feel any noticeable improvement in sustain when switching from the 59 to the Lazarus, due to the 1-piece neck? I know the theory is that less gluing-together of parts in a neck (or body) improves sustain, but still wanted to ask whether this can be noticed at all. I have the Lazarus model and it actually sustains like crazy. Thanks.
@@theguitaristas yeah, I was guessing. But the quality of the builds Epiphone has been releasing since 2020 has been nothing short of incredible, at least in the Epi high-price range.

I got the Lemonburst '59 from Andertons, and I'm very pleased with it. It looks identical to the Lazarus, just that the flame is less spectacular. One small gripe with it, the nut was fitted very slightly off-centre, but it's an easy enough fix.

Hey Colin, I didn't think they were even -that- different outside of the finish. I like idea of the one piece neck, but I'll keep my R9. I don't see myself getting both; just makes a JB edition easier to get for someone who wants one! I 100% agree with you on the finish. It does seem a bit underwhelming. As I've said 100 times now, I love the satin finish on the back of the neck over the sticky feeling of my other LP's. Here's to more bullshit next week! J
Hey Colin, Awesome video as always. I have a Lazarus, just out of pure luck. Long and McQuade here never seemed to have any ‘59s since the release, and someone custom ordered a Lazarus, and head office sent 2. The Lazarus is awesome and does look and play great. Like others, I’ve wondered about the difference, side by side. As I still really like the dark aged burst ‘59 as well. Now, of course, (and I’m not saying BECAUSE of the timing of your comparison, but it is fishy) the local L&M has, for the first time since release, gotten both a cherry burst and dark age burst ‘59s in. Sooo... when my wife asks WHY I bought a second guitar in a month, I’m totally going to show her the video segment of you telling me I need both! You might want to expect a visit! Cheers!
👍😆... Don't worry this is your support group and I am quite happy help justify to your significant other why you just 'had' to have this guitar 🤣 What works for me and mine is to point out all the far worse things I could be doing. Never fails!

Colin, any chance you can get hold of an Epiphone Les Paul 1960 Tribute Plus and maybe do a comparison with the Epiphone 1959? It looks like no one has compared these two yet. Battle of two of the best Epiphone LP's to date. Would make great content 👌
The reason why they are so comparable is the magic of CNC machining- of course that's also what makes them so affordable. Find your best Gibson design, digitize it, cut thousands of pieces a week, assemble in a third world and then sell it to the people at 1/4 the cost. We live in marvelous times.
hi Colin great set of videos on the 1959 Epiphone, had the 2018 Tribute had it 4 years tried the epi cherry no contest traded it in there and then first thoughts this is the sound I was looking for when i bought the tribute.keep up the good work straight up honest videos
I just recently traded In a brand new 2022 Gibson Les Paul tribute for a brand new Epiphone les Paul 1959 standard outfit The Gibson price was 1877$cad after taxes and came with a soft gig bag The epiphone price was 1500$ after taxes and came with a hard case The Gibson was a bare bones guitar and the only reason it was expensive was because of the name on the headstock The Epiphone was hands down a way better built, feel and sounding guitar in every way. It blew the Gibson right out of the water. I love the Epiphone’s hand rolled neck and the feel of it better than any Gibson I’ve ever played I’ll never ever buy a Gibson again My main guitar is a 2006 Epiphone les Paul plustop pro that I modded with new pups, new nut, new capacitors and wiring and she’s a screaming demon. I regularly get compliments on my guitar sound at my bands shows. We’re about to go on tour next month too here in 🇨🇦🤟🤟🤟🤟
A few years ago I bought both the Joe Bonamassa Gold Top and the Pelham Blue limited editions. As soon as they sold out they did second and third runs. So 'limited' in this context always means 'strictly limited to the number we can sell.' 😉 All's fair in the guitar business I suppose.
Colin Your right I have to have both, your 5 part review put me over the edge, so I now have the 59. I also have the Lazarus on preorder from Sweetwater. It will take some time before I get it, that's fine because I am in the Queue for it. Your reviews are simply fantastic and genuine. I look forward to seeing them weekly.
I bought mine from the JB website hoping to get a premium top but no such luck. There were numerous buyers that picked theirs up right at release from guitar centers and had much nicer tops. I ordered mine ahead of release from JB and waited over a month before it shipped 🤷🏻♂️. It feels good , fret ends are sharp though. Pickups are pretty crunchy even though they’re supposed to be lower output
As you were asking "the question" of needing to get both, I chuckled to myself and said, "of course"! Then you answered in kind with, "definitely"...haha!!! Another great video!
Hey Colin, I like the timing of this video coming out. I commented when you first reviewed the Epiphone '59 that this is a good guitar but my heart was set on getting a Gibson R9, I recently picked one up and seeing this video is kind of like a wish coming to fruition . I will be checking back in a couple of hours to see this weeks posting. Thanks again and Cheers!

Hi, great review, I want to ask you how much is the difference between this two guitars and the epiphone Lp gt 50’ inspired by Gibson? When it comes to feeling and enjoy Thanks in advance
Hey Jose, the neck profile is a bit different so maybe check out last weeks film for more info on the 50's... it has a bit more of a 'D' profile. Apart from that just the pickups and gold top... I love mine! 😎👍
@@theguitaristas I don’t want to take your time, some have said for my first Paul I should think about the Gibson Tribute over the 59 limited based on re-sale. What do you think?🙏
@@timothy5974 Hey Timothy, no problem! I don't think resale value should even be a consideration as the 59 will always be £500 cheaper to start with. Hope that helps... let us know what you end up getting! 😎👍👍
The Lazarus seems to be a bit more prominent here, with what looks and sounds like to me a very thin light coat of nitrocellulose lacquer, hence the higher price and much more breathable, and true Les Paul sound. This is from my point of view, which could possibly be off as far as the lacquer goes. Epiphones made overseas almost always use the poly lacquer from what I have known from my reading up on them. You should consider yourself very fortunate my friend to own both of these two beauties. The band, and tour must be doing very well. Thank you again for taking the time out of your very busy schedule and putting out yet another informative video for us to view. You did mention in another video that the Harley Benton Les Paul has been quite hard to acquire, due to them not being readily available due to them being sold out quite quickly. That is one video that I know one day you will come through with. I think you will be very surprised as well. Very well done, sir. Thank you, and it is such a pleasure listening to, and watching the beautiful music that you make.
Thank you for the kind words and support it's really appreciated! 🙏😊 Yes I am looking forward to getting one of the top range Harley Benton Les Pauls soon I hope!
Another fine review!! You really hit the nail on the head about the differences between the two. Both of mine sustain like crazy and I'm not sure that the "better" one piece Lazarus neck has all that much to do with it. I will say that my 59 is in the VOS Aged Cherry Burst, which is a lovely finish. I just can't get on with the Dark (Tobacco??) Burst finish. The Lazarus finish wins hands down over the Dark Burst in my book. BUT, you throw the cherry finish in the ring and you really got a problem. They both look fabulous. So I fixed it by getting both. Heck of an idea!!!! Seriously, you can't go wrong with either one. Keep up the great work Colin! Cheers!! Bryan
I have both but my Lazarus is a friggin boat anchor at almost 10.5 pounds. I like the both. And I thought the 59 had a one piece neck also. Very interesting, thanx. Great vid.
Wow 10.5lb that hurts! - I realise now I didn't weigh these today but that was done in the individual reviews... and these are both very similar iro 8.5lb.
Hey Colin, just FYI, You mentioned at some point in the video that you wished there was a Epiphone 59's with the top like Lazarus. Like Sweetwater in the US, Andertons in the UK did a (large according to them) custom order in Feb 2022 of 59's with a custom burst that looks a lot like Lazarus. The did mention that if there were enough orders they would restock them (not sure if they did). Cheers
Hi Colin. Did you polish the body on the Lazarus. You're body looks all most shin polished compared to my one. Might be studio lights.. sure wish I got one in as good condition with a matching book cut as you're one.
Hey Kevin, no I definitely didn’t polish it 😆 studio lights would be the answer. I do think I got quite lucky with my top a lot of people have commented on that.
Thanks for this. For the untrained like myself is the only designable difference is the rating of the veneer (which looks great) and obviously a single piece neck. I have a lemon burst 59 (limited run from Andertons) which I plan to buff up a bit. Picked it up for £500 on reverb and noticed the Lazarus being priced around the £1000 mark.
Hi Colin maybe you can answer me... When you open the Epiphone Gold Top did you noticed if had it a veneer over the maple top or not being a Gold Top??? I'm a little curious but until l'll change the strings l will not open it🤣🤣🤣... Cheers👍👍👍
Hey Marco, I can’t say for sure but I think it’s highly unlikely they would put a veneer on the cap of a body destined to be a solid colour. Cheers man hope that helps! 😎👍👍
@@theguitaristas thanks a lot Colin, always kind in answering... It was just curiosity because l'd like to know everything about this beautiful guitar... Can't stop playing it... And naturally we wait friday for your news... Keep on rockin'😂 😂 😂 👍👍👍thanks Colin
Hi Colin. Always enjoy your videos Tangential question to this video. I see you had a Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 2 Plus powering your pedalboard. Would you recommend that? Any complaints? I have a fairly simple board myself (but getting some real hiss / feedback problems with my daisy chain) so the PP2+ would be a little overkill-y but I figure if it’s a quality item and will handle all I’ll need, it’s not a bad investment Cheers
Thanks for that comparison. What about the '59 now? Are you going to reinstall the upgrades from last year? I agree with your bad news. Now it's time for me to save up and find a Lazarus. It's about like completing a set.
Hey Trent, I’m leaving it as standard now… it didn’t need the upgrades in the first place I just did it for fun and film, the burstbuckers seem pretty tasty already as far as I can tell! Now the trouble with your aiming for the ‘set’ is that could continue as they release new variants… oh well in for a penny eh! I’m with you man! 😆👍👍
Love the look of the Lazarus. Seems, judging by others I've seen, you were quite fortunate in getting one with such a nice finish! Anyway, another great video my friend. Thank you. 😊😎🎸
They are all pretty similar... 59 has a nicer neck, Gibson pickups, and case but at a price.... but apart from that I'd suggest going with what pleases you most aesthetically.
@@theguitaristas I will have to visit some local shops to see what I can put my hands on. I may end up with one of these 3 as well as picking up a Tokai.
Great video. They sound similar on YT. I would choose the Lazarus over the 59 due to the top. The 59 aged dark burst sounds great but that finish is a real turn off the many time I checked it in the store. I got Aged Southern Fade 59 instead ( paid extra in Australia) and when I finally removed that lame matt finish to bring out the gloss, I am stoked. Superb look to go with the great sound.
@@mikeshumate1840 I use Meguiar Scratch X sparingly and work on one area until the matt finish is gone, then the adjacent area. Take your time and not to be too aggressive with it.
Hello Colin! They both sound great (especially with the nice melodic playing :) ) The top on the Lazarus is quite obviously much nicer but after that they are ( or seem to be ) identical or at least to me. Right now I don't own any Epi electrics although I don't have anything against them and I do feel they are making some very nice products for the price ranges they are coming in at. ( Although I feel the same way about Gibson's as well, I believe they're also making a better product these last few years as well opposed to 10-15 years ago when the QC was lacking tremendously imo ). Anyhow.... getting back to your original statement about it being better? I think they are both excellent and if you blindfolded me I couldn't tell them apart. 👍
Great video as always Colin! You're bang on; other than the 1-piece neck, it's a beauty contest...I have and love the same dark burst 59, but if I could turn back time, I'd go Laz (but not the one with Joe's name inlaid) as I've always been a sucker for honey bursts
Think it comes down to finish preference at the end of the day, interestingly andertons are doing an exclusive 59 in a lemon burst very similar looking to Lazarus, also those monty pafs sound insanely good. Another great comparison video
There are a few exclusive colors of the 59. I like the southern fade. Sweetwater has two exclusive colors as well. I have the dark one but would have gone with the southern if I knew it existed a year ago. Excellent guitars.
Well, I went and did it, sir. I found a Lazarus on Reverb for a decent enough price after some back and forth offers. Pulled the trigger. Ordered it Sunday morning here in the USA. I could have pre ordered one but don't have the patience to wait months for them to come in. It will join my two Epiphone 59's, one of each color, my Alex Lifeson Epiphone, my three Gibson Les Paul's, a couple of Strats, my Epiphone SG Custom, and other assorted Epiphone Les Pauls. Looking forward to playing it. Cheers!
So, got my (slightly used) Lazarus today (Wednesday USA) and I must say it is gorgeous. I love the top. Other than needing new strings it sounds and plays great. I mean this thing REALLY growls when you step on the gas. I'm a bit of a Les Paul addict and there is nothing better than when you get one that has that unmistakable tone. Fat, warm, and gooey neck pickup and a bridge pickup that will blow your eyebrows off. I mean this thing is punching way above its class. Classic Les Paul ballsy sound. After initially playing it for about an hour I immediately picked up one of my Epiphone 59's and played it. Right away I noticed the Lazarus neck is chunkier but not in a bad way. Also, in my case at least, the Lazarus seemed to have a stronger output than the 59. The 59 sounded just a tad weaker. The Lazarus sounded warmer, darker than the 59 and its growl was a bit stronger and louder. Don't get me wrong they both sound great and all guitars are different but in my case the Lazarus ate the 59's lunch. In my opinion the Lazarus is one hell of a guitar. Thanks for your reviews and I look forward to every Friday. Love your style and presentation. BTW, this is the third guitar I purchased after watching your channel and I absolutely love it.
@@drabun1 Nice one! I do agree they are great guitars, really not to much to separate them from the much more expensive versions. Thanks for support man and sorry I keep making you spend money! 😂👍👍

Professor Colin, thanks for another fine episode! I made my choice using your excellent evaluation combined with the availability of the instruments at the moment. So I’m awaiting delivery of the 1959 . Woo-hoo. Regarding those necks, it is sometimes (most of the time?) the case that a glue joint is stronger than the wood involved. All the best Eric
Nice one Eric! 😆👍 I think that’s what they say that the glue joint is stronger, and the guitars with scarf joint are far less likely to break than those with one piece neck. I’m no expert but that’s the prof’s opinion! 🤣
I had the Lazarus and it was a great guitar, but felt cheap next to the USA Gibson standard. The Epiphone lost and was sold. It does not have the bottom end or weight of the Gibson
Another great one Colin! PS. I think the leak on the case gives it character no need to wipe it down. Great playing on this one too btw. Keep up the great work! BS free, Ahahahahaha 🤣😂🤣😂🤣 love it Sir.
The tone on those pick ups you pulled out were different class I thought. The Bethnal Green’s a believe you said. I know this is old one but yea it’s worth saying how great they sounded nice solo as well.

The Lemon Burst '59 will be released in the UK very shortly I believe. I'm about to pull the trigger on a Epiphone Slash Les Paul Standard for a very reasonable price, which I will use as the basis for a few nice mods. Those Bethnall Green pickups from Monty's are great, but £450?!! Thanks for another interesting video Colin. All the best 🤟
I have been waiting for those Slash's to drop in price as I still fancy one... any shopping tips? 🤔 I think it maybe worth putting some Bethnall Greens in your Muphy Lab R9 but in an Epiphone would be plain silly.... says the man who put the prototypes in one!! 🤣
@@theguitaristas 🤣 Indeed, the Bethnall Greens are way too 'high end' for an Epiphone, and definitely well beyond the limits of my budget. The Slash Les Pauls are on offer at Andertons, couple of hundred quid off SRP, which I don't think is bad as that includes a hard case as well. I'm tempted by the Sire L7 also, or even a Epi 60's Standard. As I said I'm looking for a sound basis for some mods, any further suggestions would be welcome before I commit to the Slash. Did you manage to get your hands on the new limited edition Gibson Slash 4 Les Paul this morning?? 🤣🤣
@@mattporter6128 with hard case at that price the Slash sounds like a good option. I may give the '4' a miss until they come down in price by a few grand 😂
A fun, informative review, Colin. Epiphone has obviously developed a winning, repeatable formula for building high value guitars that sell by the thousands. Your own reactions to the '59 illustrate why: They're pretty damn good guitars out of the box, but they are also easily modified to meet an owners individual wants, needs, or desires. Everybody wins, a rare enough situation, which means that the Lazarus will limited only by the number of them Epiphone can sell. Cheers!
Cheers man, these guitars are indeed way better than you'd imagine they should be and ought to make anyone think twice before spending four or more times as much on a Gibson... imho! 😆👍

Nice score Chris! 😁👍
I have the 59' and absolutely love it, but the finish on that lazurus looks much nicer!
Hello, I´m very interested in this guitar. Could you tell me the thickness at 1st and 12th frets. Thanks.
I found a 59 one with a gloss finish it's so cool
Sound-wise its definitely a wash and majority would say the Lazarus is the better looking one but I am so attracted to that dark burst! Especially when it hits the light in certain angles. Nice comparison, as usual! 🥇🏆
Cheers dude! 😎👍👍
It used to be 'FRIDAY - The end of another work week!'.....Now it is 'FRIDAY- A new video from The Guitaristas Channel!' That's worth a day off to watch!
Thanks that's really appreciated... glad you like my brand of bullshit!! 🤣👍
@@theguitaristas Just keep on keeping on...I find your content and delivery very refreshing and a throw back to the players I used to follow in my youth on the local scene.....

Love the no bullshit and upfront approach you have mate. One of the most enjoyable videos I've watched lately. Thank you for your time.
Cheers Matt that’s appreciated 😎👍
There have been a limited number of lemon burst 59 limited editions that looks like 95% of the Lazarus…. I’m ordering one..
Thanks Jim that's appreciated... glad you found us! 😁👍
Great job.
😁
Another point worth mentioning is a scarf joint is stronger than a solid neck. When cutting a solid neck the grain gets shorter in the neck headstock area . That's why Gibson are notorious for cracking at the neck.
Glued wood is stronger at the joint than the wood itself. So if you have quarter sawn wood running the length of the neck, then a scarf joint with the headstock also having grain run the length of the head stock you have a much stronger neck.
Cheers Rory, check out my Firebird review this week... now that has some real fancy woodwork going on! 😁👍
Definitely!
Yeah that was a great point 😆
I'd probably go for the Lazarus based on the way it looks, though they both sound brilliant. That being said, I can't stand the so called VOS finish on either guitar, specially on the 59: it's almost like somebody accidentally dropped a dab of engine grease on that top and then tried to get rid of it by wiping it off with a cloth...
I have the dark one. I'm not into glossy guitars at all, but I agree the finish doesn't look great. I really think they should just stop calling it "worn" and call it satin. Good news is when I play it I don't really see the finish.
They can be polished up to a fine gloss, though.
I'd much rather have that finish than the nitrocellulose
I definitely prefer the satin finish over the gloss on most others
Looks fine in person
Hello Colin! Don’t worry about those other channels: I watch those but I wait for yours!
Love my Lazarus! I have seen some rather bland tops, and I was nervous what I would get, but mine looks like yours - highly recommend! See you next week.
Cheers Brent, thanks for the support man it's really appreciated... see you nets week! 😎👍
Looks like new colour options may be coming!
@@theguitaristas Fingers crossed! Haven’t gotten an epiphone in years but that may change if they make that new finish. 😎
I really enjoyed this
Cheers Andrew! 😎👍
Love you videos. Your voice is very soothing. I had put this video on when I couldn’t sleep and woke up with a 59.
🤣👍👍
The one I've been waiting for 👍🏻👍🏻 Good stuff, Colin! Laz is still available in OZ, but at $1879AUD, they don't seem to be moving. I did pay $1550AUD for the '59, which is as far as I would stretch for an Epiphone, probably.
Cheers man, minor details aside you already got what you need! 😎👍👍
thanks for the great comparison review, Colin i got a Lazarus because of the Neck, and i got a nice top ...... both great guitars
Fantastic... I like to buy Lazarus, just because it resembles to the Paul Kossoff 59...Koss is my favourite guitarist👍👍👍🎸🎶🎸🎶... And now let's see this new video... You always say and show us interesting things... Cheers👍👍👍
Great review as always. Your laid back vibe works well with your refreshing honesty. You're the real deal.
Thanks that's appreciated! 🙏😊
I got a 59 in lemon burst a few days ago, killer , thanks for your videos on these beauties😁🤜🤛
I’ve got a 50s Standard with what Sweetwater said is a AAA flame top. Of course, it’s a veneer, but it’s actually flamed maple, and it is so nice. The flame actually disappears when looking at different angles.
😎👍👍
This is one of the comparisons I've been waiting for and you didn't disappoint as always, Colin! 👏 Both great guitars as expected, the Lazarus got more mixed reviews at Thomann's though. But your final decision just got me 😆 Keep on rocking 🎸
Cheers Alan, I can only say what I think and speak of the guitar in front of me, so always good to look at a cross section of reviews and decide who you trust… I am honoured! 😆👍👍
@@theguitaristas my pleasure 😉 The "say what I think" is one of the things I appreciate most on you channel. Not so common these days unfortunately...
I took your suggestion and got both, why not? I like both of them. The finish on my ‘59 feels better than the Lazarus. I really enjoy your videos! Cheers!

Andertons have released a 59 lemon burst finish and I just got mine delivered today. Looks similar to the Lazarus but the flame top looks better on Lazarus I’d say. But all the same I’m over the moon with it. Stunning guitar
Nice one! 😎👍👍
Lazarus is just a stunning guitar. I love the wide flame. Great guitars. Cheers from Pittsburgh!
what are you playing at 19:34? its beautiful.
Cheers Paul 😎👍
Excellent review (and channel). It’s interesting, at Guitar Center (website) they are taking Lazarus reserves for $899, but have a used one listed for $1,249. Thanks for your great insight, and humor. Cheers from Arizona!
Cheers Rico thanks for the kind words and support! 😎👍
Good news for those of us in the US. Musician’s Friend informed me this morning that the Lazarus is still available for pre-order and will be back in stock on 7/30/22.
Hi,
Thanks for this comparison! Did you feel any noticeable
improvement in sustain when switching from the 59 to
the Lazarus, due to the 1-piece neck? I know the theory is
that less gluing-together of parts in a neck (or body) improves
sustain, but still wanted to ask whether this can be noticed at all.
I have the Lazarus model and it actually sustains like crazy.
Thanks.
I'll be honest I didn't notice any difference... both did that thing we love! 😎👍
@@theguitaristas yeah, I was guessing. But the quality of the builds Epiphone
has been releasing since 2020 has been nothing short of incredible, at least in
the Epi high-price range.
Yeah I wanted to know, too. Thanks for asking 😉
I own both. The difference is minimal and in my opinion very subjective.
Thank you sir for your time, I really take in what you have to say. You Rock!!!

Exactly the comparison I was looking for!
I got the Lemonburst '59 from Andertons, and I'm very pleased with it. It looks identical to the Lazarus, just that the flame is less spectacular. One small gripe with it, the nut was fitted very slightly off-centre, but it's an easy enough fix.

Hey Colin,
I didn't think they were even -that- different outside of the finish.

Hey Colin,
Awesome video as always.
Hi Colin. I look forward to seeing your videos every week. I love your playing I just wish I could play as well as you! As I’m now in the market for a hollow/semi-hollow I’m going back over some of your previous videos. Thanks for keeping us all entertained and informed, I view you as the British Trogly but with affordable guitars. See you next week. All the best and stay safe

😎👍
hi Colin great set of videos on the 1959 Epiphone, had the 2018 Tribute had it 4 years tried the epi cherry no contest traded it in there and then first thoughts this is the sound I was looking for when i bought the tribute.keep up the good work straight up honest videos
I just recently traded In a brand new 2022 Gibson Les Paul tribute for a brand new Epiphone les Paul 1959 standard outfit
The Gibson price was 1877$cad after taxes and came with a soft gig bag
The epiphone price was 1500$ after taxes and came with a hard case
The Gibson was a bare bones guitar and the only reason it was expensive was because of the name on the headstock
The Epiphone was hands down a way better built, feel and sounding guitar in every way. It blew the Gibson right out of the water. I love the Epiphone’s hand rolled neck and the feel of it better than any Gibson I’ve ever played
I’ll never ever buy a Gibson again
My main guitar is a 2006 Epiphone les Paul plustop pro that I modded with new pups, new nut, new capacitors and wiring and she’s a screaming demon.
Those others still managed to become collectibles so hopefully this will too! 😎👍
Then everything in this world is a limited run and not forever.
Cheers Joe… I don’t know whether to say thank you or apologise for being a bad influence! 😆👍

Cheers
Cheers mate, yes I now they are mine this one and all sorts of different versions available now! 😎👍

Hi Colin. Always enjoy your videos
Tangential question to this video. I see you had a Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 2 Plus powering your pedalboard. Would you recommend that? Any complaints?
I have a fairly simple board myself (but getting some real hiss / feedback problems with my daisy chain) so the PP2+ would be a little overkill-y but I figure if it’s a quality item and will handle all I’ll need, it’s not a bad investment
Cheers
I’d definitely recommend it for hassle free noiseless power 👍
Thank you. 😊😎🎸

Which is the best option; the Standard, Custom, or 59 reissue? I am looking to get an Epiphone and it’s hard to decide. All 3 are within my budget.
They are all pretty similar... 59 has a nicer neck, Gibson pickups, and case but at a price.... but apart from that I'd suggest going with what pleases you most aesthetically.

What did you use to polish up the top if you don't mind me asking?
Thanks Thomas! 😎👍
Great video as always Colin! You're bang on; other than the 1-piece neck, it's a beauty contest...I have and love the same dark burst 59, but if I could turn back time, I'd go Laz (but not the one with Joe's name inlaid) as I've always been a sucker for honey bursts
😎👍👍
Cheers!
Nice one! Let us know how it fit’s in and stacks up with your collection… good to hear crtitique from a fellow addict that can put it in context! 😎👍👍
Great job as always on your videos, keep on rockin'
I have both and love them equally! Great guitars!
Now I think I want the new 2024 inspired by Gibson 1959 les paul!
Nice show and thanks for showing the difference between the two! Same sound with a little different look.
Do you still have the Lazarus? The value has gone up. Anderton’s in the UK had a few lemon burst 59s, I know this because I watch their channel on RUclips
I just absolutely LOVE the Lazarus' top.
One thing kind sir, please no reviews of amps, my buying habits are dangerous.
@@ericfultz9429 I can't promise...
We all need a little leeway with our tolerances, Colin.
Thanks again for the Friday fix!
😆👍
I had the Lazarus and it was a great guitar, but felt cheap next to the USA Gibson standard. The Epiphone lost and was sold. It does not have the bottom end or weight of the Gibson
It is of course a quarter of the price of the Gibson standard so that makes sense…
I actually own a ‘59 Sweetwater exclusive finish, but I wish I could trade it for a Lazarus
Good show Colin, as always!
😎👍
What is your tailpiece upgrade recommendation please and thank you!
Check out the series I did on Epiphone 59 upgrade… part 1 I think there are links in the description 😎👍
There's really nothing to separate them sonically but we listen with our eyes too and I'd go for Lazarus purely on looks
Hey mate, just a heads up, shipping is dragging along not many flights leaving US aparently so my supplies aren't here yet.
No rush at all mate.
@@theguitaristas Great, I never rush a set of pickups.
Another great one Colin!
PS. I think the leak on the case gives it character no need to wipe it down. Great playing on this one too btw. Keep up the great work! BS free, Ahahahahaha 🤣😂🤣😂🤣 love it Sir.
Cheers David, I put the case away and have forgotten about the muck already! 😆👍
Have a look at the Anderstons lemonburst version of the 59... looks like Lazarus but better top
Lazarus FTW! Looks like an old 50's pauly
wow, how do you get such a gritty sound in your play out solo? Fantastic.
Hey i might try out the Lazarus,as i cant afford a tokai or Gibson r8
The tone on those pick ups you pulled out were different class I thought.
The Bethnal Green’s a believe you said.
I know this is old one but yea it’s worth saying how great they sounded nice solo as well.
Great Colin hope they make a Trinni Lopez in 2022 that would be a great thing and another grail guitar in an affordable package.
i got the 1959 epi sweetwater exclusive and i took your advice ordered the JB version Thank you my friend
Nice one! 😎👍
currently watching this instead of filming my own that needs doing - one of those days Colin!
Ah yes we all have those days Paul!... perhaps my nonsense will inspire you into action! 😆🤞 Cheers mate.
Hi great review, will you be getting one of the Andertons limited Epiphone 59 LP in lemon burst? It looks like a very similar guitar to the Lazarus. Cheers Pete
Probably not Pete as I already did the standard version.
@@theguitaristas how did you find the lazarus? I got the 2013 epiphone bonamassa goldtop and thats a beauty to play.
@@mrmetal1276 It was great!
@@theguitaristas Epiphone, squire and vintage trully setting great value guitars for all players. Mike Rutherford was touring with a very basic squire. Great to see focus on top quality lower end guitars. Cheers mate for reviews real people want to see
I went for the 59, didn’t want to wait 😁, I like your reviews, you have a unique entertaining style…
Cheers man! mmm Desmo Dromic... a Ducatista Guitarista perhaps?? 😆🙌👍
Absolutely, Ducati Diavel 1260 😀
@@desmodromic4586 Ah lovely! 👍 I have a '96 900SS 😀
@@theguitaristas I did have a 900SS 95, wish I didn’t have sold it
Great review i have the Lazarus great guitar for the money ,keep the great work up 👍
The Lemon Burst '59 will be released in the UK very shortly I believe.
Cheers!
Cheers man, these guitars are indeed way better than you'd imagine they should be and ought to make anyone think twice before spending four or more times as much on a Gibson... imho! 😆👍
AMS here in the states are announcing the Lazarus is no longer available as of today Feb.11, 2022.
If you like LP's, can't go wrong with these editions 😎👍
Even I was tempted, as I prefer single coils 🤣
Can hardly wait to see what's coming next Friday 😎👍
😎👍❤🖖
Love Brother
Hey Richard my good friend!... what's your single coil fetish is it Strats or Tele's?? or P90's maybe? thanks for dropping in as always and have a great weekend man! 😎👍👍
Another excellent review
2 great offering from Epiphone
