In 2004 the oil tycoon and richest man in Russia Mikhail Khodorkovsky and his business partner Platon Lebedev were imprisoned. This became known as the YUKOS case - a landmark lawsuit in Putin's Russia as it ushered in the end of Russian business holding any power in the country. Anna Nemzer looks at this event as the beginning of Putin's suppression of political rivals as it is widely believed that Khodorkovsky had political ambitions.

Fascinating. Thank you for this magnificently clear summary. 😮The trajectory of Putin’s tightening grip on power is as I remember it, but details grow increasingly foggy in my 76 y.o. Memory. As a layperson in New York I never knew all these details. And I had deep suspicion of khodorofsky (sp?) somewhat equating him with the other oligarchs.
That said, I always had doubts about those apartment explosions in Dagestan and around Moscow and other terrorist attacks, which served as an excuse to seize extra powers and fight the second Chechen war.

I remember some years ago having a conversation with a gentleman I know who managed a company dealing in timeshare in the private air travel business. His company made the decision to leave the Russian market. His comment always stuck with me. Russia is run by a mafia and if you are not prepared to bribe someone its impossible to do business there.
This seems to be a common story I have heard so many times. How did so many western corporations and businesses think it was ok to set up shop in such conditions?

A very fine report. Thank you so much and very glad I found it. It added so much to the whole Yukos story and Khodorkovsky who I admire very much. When Putin became such a liar, such a violent criminal without ANY feeling for, for example, the tens of thousands dying on the battlefield for his fantasies. Did he first become embedded in the criminal and bribe business in St Petersburg when he was deputy mayor? Was it as a KGB agent in East Berlin? Was it his childhood? Was it his judo involvement and the nature of the person who ran it???So many questions. At the beginning he seemed fairly normal, except nervous, and he made a crass observation when the Russian submarine went down at the beginning of his time as pm..."Death happens" he said (or similar) to the wives of the submariners surrounding him, demanding answers...
The Western public and politicians need a serious upgrade in their knowledge about Russia and you are chipping away at it.
I recommend David Satter and Owen Matthews books on the recent developments in Russia - between 1990 and now.

Putin has properties all over Europe and a palace by the sea. He is one of the richest people in the world while pipes freeze and crack, bridges collapse and flooded town receive no assistance and have to fend for themselves. All the wealth from the regions outside Moscow and St Petersburg have been robbed and stripped of their resources with no money going into infrastructure and public works to improve their lives.
