I grew up in the 80s and we had this on VHS--we wore that tape out. Jonathan Pryce is an AMAZING villain; he's so cool and polished, and when he speaks you're just totally arrested. And it's one of those movies that really puts you present 'in the time and place', right there with the actors. The scenes of them running down the street or through the field really envelop you within the atmosphere of the action. It's a magical film.

Saw it back when it was new. I loved the dark atmosphere and the banter between Robards and Price. There are a lot of fun quotes. "Come visit me, sir, if you would uh, wish to improve your education"

"Movie was a dud" - man, this is one of my favorite movies of all time. Does a great job of recreating that feeling of the excitement of the unknown and fears of a kid growing up. Not sure why it's not on Disney Plus, so I bought the blu ray a few years ago. It probably seems dated now, but back in the 80s seeing this movie as a kid was a big event.

Something Wicked This Way Comes is such an underrated movie. I watched this movie when I was younger and didn't quite understand it. As an adult, this story hits so much harder. I cannot recommend this movie enough
I work in Hollywood, 36 years in animation. I worked at Disney in the early 90's... here are a couple other points you may like to know. The town square was a set on the Disney lot, and I visited it many times over my lunches... In a few shots you can see down the side street to where the main Mary Poppins exterior street set still stood. Very near was a western/mexican set as well that was used in the Zorro tv series. I LOVED this movie as a kid and own it on disc now! So when i discovered the set for it on the lot I was SUPER stoked to walk around! They tore this stuff down to build the Frank G Wells building and a few others... Disney had long wanted to 'crack' more sophisticated adult-ish content but failed a few times. The three you mentioned 'black hole' 'dragon slayer' and 'something wicked' all performed poorly, it seemed at the time no one wanted to see PG or R 'Disney' films. so Disney started 'Touchstone' to get away from this! Touchstone Pictures were wildly successful in the 80's, starting with 'Splash'
Just a brief shoutout to you. I covered the film for Cinefantastique magazine, was allowed to roam the lot, and loved the town square set. I even recreated my own bit of it by hunkering down in the storm drain. (I also found the decaying ruin of the T-Rex from "My Science Project" tossed out in the weeds and retrieved one of its teeth as a souvenier. Still have it..)

Here's another neat thing... before i was in the industry i had a buddy who was an animator who let me come visit him at work a few times. I was in high school when he invited me to come to Ralph Bakshi's studio when they were working on mighty mouse. It was in a CRAPPY brick building way north on lankershim that was partially used as storage for movie props. As i entered the building we passed chain link cages full of props, and the chrome space ship from 'flight of the navigator' was parked inside!
Thank you for sharing. I went to uni in California and did odd jobs. I had several retired clients that worked behind the scenes in the studios and loved their stories. Friends of mine used to complain when I stayed at the end of movies to watch all the credits but I was so happy to see people in those trades finally getting their name on the picture. You were so lucky to be able to walk those sets.
I bought the same dvd you did last year. I showed this to my teens who enjoyed it. For me it was nostalgic, I've seen it several times but watching it with my kids was an especially fun experience.
I really think this movie out-smarted itself. There is so much going on that it takes longer than the run time to absorb it. Each time I watch it, I catch some new link.

When I was a teen, I was so exited to find a copy on VHS in the old Disney white clamshell boxes, back when rental stores use to sell their used copies. The movie would never be made as a dark fantasy today, so I’m glad it was filmed so long ago!

I grew up in a town next to Waukegan, IL, where Ray was from. I always liked his stories. This movie was great and brings back great memories growing up! I think this was also the first time I saw a Johnathon Pryce performance. In the 80s, HBO had "The Ray Bradbury Theater" and there was one episode where William Shatner switches bodies with his young son. Anyway, love your channel and bringing back stuff I grew up with. Long live the 80s!!!

I can’t explain why _Superman III (1983),_ with its third, act terrified my nine year old self (and my Brother’s ten year old self) when it hit the screen, but we were both utterly fascinated when _Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983)_ was in theaters. Well… then again there was that goddamn Tarantula nightmare sequence!! 😭 But we did, and still do, love it! Jason Robards Jr. and Jonathan Pryce played so phenomenally against each other with their characters! I’ll never forget how Mr. Dark tried tempting Charles with the promise of youth in order to get him to reveal where Will and Jim were hiding in the Town Library. Also, even as a kid, I knew who Ray Bradbury was. To this day, I wish his classics _Something Wicked_ and _The Halloween Tree_ were available on DVD because I haven’t been able to find either film. Both books (of the same titles) are a fantastic read. I’d love to find those again as well. And who could forget _Fahrenheit 451?_ If that story didn’t paint a terrifying picture of today’s World, I don’t know what does!

Saw this movie, three years after its release when I was 14. It was the first non-slasher horror movie I ever saw, and it was the first horror movie that made me question "things." This movie inspired me to look into Steven King's novels, which, at the time, only nerds and lonely girls read. Hey it was the 1980s, give me a break. After reading instead of watching King's works, I developed an intense fondness for the genre. Later, I slipped into Heinlein and, of course, Starship Troopers. Being a military brat and a history enthusiast and Scifi junkie (not a nerd) that book, indeed colored my perspective on life-in addition to The Art of War, A Tale of Two Cities, Macbeth, Hamlet, The Autobragphy of Malcolm X, and The Count of Monte Cristo. The wickedness of Wicked seem to stay with you, not fear. What would tempt me? Will I be old before my time? Have I accomplished all I can? Is 'longing' a sin, or is it human nature? For me, the movie is all about [exploitation] human nature: what we want instead of what we need and take for granted the little things. A lighter version of the same premise is King's Needful Things.
Royal Dano who played Tom Fury (the guy in the electric chair in the clips) was also the voice of the Mr Lincoln animatronic for Disney for the World's Fair and park "Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln."

I loved this movie as a kid. It used to play on the disney channel in the 80's or maybe the early 90's. The scene where the spiders were moving through the streets used to give me nightmares, but didn't keep me from watching it.

I liked this movie and checked it out as soon as I found out Johnathan Pryce was in it after watching Brazil and loving it. Used to own Wicked myself and lost it or it was stolen. The lightning rod salesman was probably a combat veteran because he was wearing a partial World War One uniform at the start of the movie (trench coat, hat, etc) so the time period was probably in the late 1920's before the big stock market crash in 1929 which started the Great Depression (nobody had any extra money after that and Carnivals stopped in the United States pretty much well in the 1930's).

I've recently watched this, after years of being interested in watching this film for myself. I absolutely adored it. I think it's incredibly underrated and I wish Disney made it easier to watch or did a new round of blu ray releases.I honestly found it very hard and annoying trying to find a decent enough pirated copy online, because i was too lazy and cheap to spend 20 bucks for a DVD off eBay lol . I also found it to honestly be way more scarier and mature compared to Disney's other dark fantasy films from that era that everyone online from the decade talks about. But it has an incredible sense of the season of autumn, which makes it a very cozy watch for Halloween time.
Thanks Minty I watched this film a day before your retrospective was posted. I had to torrent it to get a semi-decent version. I played it at my 10th birthday party and now I've just passed 50. Jonathan Price deserved an Oscar for his performance and Jason Robards was perfect as a middle aged father who felt like his life had slipped away. Now that I'm closer to or exactly the same age as his character I realized that like him I've spent too much time regretting the things I didn't do rather than being happy about what I've done. It's a perfect film to start the Halloween season and will always be close to my heart. Now we need to pressure Disney into remastering it (as well as Watcher in the Woods) so everyone can discover this treasure.
This is a great movie. In my twisted imagination, I think that Rob Zombie could give this movie an awesome remake. Gritty and dangerous. Not that this movie isnt already great, I just think Zombie could really have fun with it.
If you look at the cars, it was clearly early 1930s. I was on the Disney lot at that time and watched a great deal of the shootings. Bradbury was there a lot.
I love this movie!! I also love the book!! I recently had to buy the DVD because as was mentioned it’s not on Disney +. I showed it to our twin 15 year old girls. One liked it, the other said it was trash lol.
It's crazy that Jason robards was supposed to be middle aged in this. I always thought he was a grandparent not the dad. Middle aged was different back then 😂
Well he was an older dad but yea a) people aged differently and b) many people have children later now but yea he even looked way older than middle aged
Loved this movie as a kid Minty - I found it on Amazon a few years ago on dvd bc I couldn’t believe it wasn’t available on streaming anywhere. It’s funny how some of these niche movies from your childhood don’t translate to later generations. We showed this to my three girls and they universally hated it. I saw this movie when it came out in 1983 and Loved it! (I was 23 years old at the time) I especially loved the scene when the boys are attacked by the spiders in the bedroom. I thought the effect of making them looking a little older at the end of the scene was great. I try to watch SWTWC whenever it is on TV. (Though I do own a DVD of the movie). Now knowing the "The Ten Things You Didn't"t Know About SWTWC", I am even more excited to watch the movie again - maybe tonight (It is about 5 pm EST USA where I am at this moment.) I was 9 when my older brother’s friend brought the VHS over. In the scene where the boys are in the middle of seeing one simulated horrific image after another and when Will sees the one of his decapitation, I ran out of the room. That traumatized me more than Toht’s melting on Raiders of the Lost Ark. But I did take courage upon remembering it at age 37, watched it and considered it a decent movie viewing experience.
Never thought I'd see you do this movie review, Minty. I'm thoroughly impressed and pleased. This movie got me into and over my fear of spiders. Great film. I still watch it often.

Yes! I think Stephen King's Needful Things lifted quite a lot from Ray Bradbury's story. I prefer Bradbury's writing style. ❤

I grew up in a town next to Waukegan, IL, where Ray was from. I always liked his stories. This movie was great and brings back great memories growing up! I think this was also the first time I saw a Johnathon Pryce performance. In the 80s, HBO had "The Ray Bradbury Theater" and there was one episode where William Shatner switches bodies with his young son. Anyway, love your channel and bringing back stuff I grew up with. Long live the 80s!!!

I can’t explain why _Superman III (1983),_ with its third, act terrified my nine year old self (and my Brother’s ten year old self) when it hit the screen, but we were both utterly fascinated when _Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983)_ was in theaters.
Well… then again there was that goddamn Tarantula nightmare sequence!! 😭
But we did, and still do, love it!
Jason Robards Jr. and Jonathan Pryce played so phenomenally against each other with their characters! I’ll never forget how Mr. Dark tried tempting Charles with the promise of youth in order to get him to reveal where Will and Jim were hiding in the Town Library.
Also, even as a kid, I knew who Ray Bradbury was. To this day, I wish his classics _Something Wicked_ and _The Halloween Tree_ were available on DVD because I haven’t been able to find either film.
Both books (of the same titles) are a fantastic read. I’d love to find those again as well.
And who could forget _Fahrenheit 451?_ If that story didn’t paint a terrifying picture of today’s World, I don’t know what does!

I remember seeing this when I was a teenager in the 80’s. A few years ago I remembered it and wanted to see it again. It was very difficult to find it. I finally watched it on You Tube. It has a creepy appeal to me. Thank you for making this video.
Thank you for your review of "Something Wicked This Way Comes." I think it is an underrated film. I think you would enjoy "7 Faces of Dr. Lao" starring Tony Randall (1964) if you haven't seen it.

Saw this movie, three years after its release when I was 14. It was the first non-slasher horror movie I ever saw, and it was the first horror movie that made me question "things." This movie inspired me to look into Steven King's novels, which, at the time, only nerds and lonely girls read. Hey it was the 1980s, give me a break.
After reading instead of watching King's works, I developed an intense fondness for the genre. Later, I slipped into Heinlein and, of course, Starship Troopers. Being a military brat and a history enthusiast and Scifi junkie (not a nerd) that book, indeed colored my perspective on life-in addition to The Art of War, A Tale of Two Cities, Macbeth, Hamlet, The Autobragphy of Malcolm X, and The Count of Monte Cristo.
The wickedness of Wicked seem to stay with you, not fear. What would tempt me? Will I be old before my time? Have I accomplished all I can? Is 'longing' a sin, or is it human nature?
For me, the movie is all about [exploitation] human nature: what we want instead of what we need and take for granted the little things. A lighter version of the same premise is King's Needful Things.
I love this film! And I’m planning to share it this Halloween to my son.
Price, is always great! I'm pretty sure I saw this in theater, but I don't remember. Price and Robards, cant go wrong.

I loved this movie as a kid. It used to play on the disney channel in the 80's or maybe the early 90's. The scene where the spiders were moving through the streets used to give me nightmares, but didn't keep me from watching it.

I loved this film back when it came out. That carousel scene was really scary when you're young...lol!
The lightning rod salesman was probably a combat veteran because he was wearing a partial World War One uniform at the start of the movie (trench coat, hat, etc) so the time period was probably in the late 1920's before the big stock market crash in 1929 which started the Great Depression (nobody had any extra money after that and Carnivals stopped in the United States pretty much well in the 1930's).

Sorry if this was already mentioned -- but the only time this will be aired on TV as far as I can find, is this Saturday, October 12 at 10:55 p.m. (central) as part of Freeform's 31 Nights of Halloween. I watched it on Freevee back in 2022, but it doesn't seem to be there anymore.

I've recently watched this, after years of being interested in watching this film for myself. I absolutely adored it. I think it's incredibly underrated and I wish Disney made it easier to watch or did a new round of blu ray releases.I honestly found it very hard and annoying trying to find a decent enough pirated copy online, because i was too lazy and cheap to spend 20 bucks for a DVD off eBay lol . I also found it to honestly be way more scarier and mature compared to Disney's other dark fantasy films from that era that everyone online from the decade talks about. But it has an incredible sense of the season of autumn, which makes it a very cozy watch for Halloween time.

Always loved "Something Wicked This Way Comes" boyhood classic to me. Been trying to find it on Utube or prime.
Thanks Minty I watched this film a day before your retrospective was posted. I had to torrent it to get a semi-decent version. I played it at my 10th birthday party and now I've just passed 50. Jonathan Price deserved an Oscar for his performance and Jason Robards was perfect as a middle aged father who felt like his life had slipped away. Now that I'm closer to or exactly the same age as his character I realized that like him I've spent too much time regretting the things I didn't do rather than being happy about what I've done. It's a perfect film to start the Halloween season and will always be close to my heart. Now we need to pressure Disney into remastering it (as well as Watcher in the Woods) so everyone can discover this treasure.
This is a great movie. In my twisted imagination, I think that Rob Zombie could give this movie an awesome remake. Gritty and dangerous. Not that this movie isnt already great, I just think Zombie could really have fun with it.
This was a childhood favorite of mine. I still love it today. H 18:51 ere in the States, it was a flop, it's supposedly very popular in the UK.
If you look at the cars, it was clearly early 1930s. I was on the Disney lot at that time and watched a great deal of the shootings. Bradbury was there a lot.
This was one of my fave books along with Fahrenheit 451

I love this movie!! I also love the book!! I recently had to buy the DVD because as was mentioned it’s not on Disney +. I showed it to our twin 15 year old girls. One liked it, the other said it was trash lol.

Well he was an older dad but yea a) people aged differently and b) many people have children later now but yea he even looked way older than middle aged

Loved this movie as a kid Minty - I found it on Amazon a few years ago on dvd bc I couldn’t believe it wasn’t available on streaming anywhere. It’s funny how some of these niche movies from your childhood don’t translate to later generations. We showed this to my three girls and they universally hated it.

I saw this movie when it came out in 1983 and Loved it! (I was 23 years old at the time)
I especially loved the scene when the boys are attacked by the spiders in the bedroom. I thought the effect of making them looking a little older at the end of the scene was great. I try to watch SWTWC whenever it is on TV. (Though I do own a DVD of the movie).
Now knowing the "The Ten Things You Didn't"t Know About SWTWC", I am even more excited to watch the movie again - maybe tonight (It is about 5 pm EST USA where I am at this moment.)

I was 9 when my older brother’s friend brought the VHS over. In the scene where the boys are in the middle of seeing one simulated horrific image after another and when Will sees the one of his decapitation, I ran out of the room. That traumatized me more than Toht’s melting on Raiders of the Lost Ark. But I did take courage upon remembering it at age 37, watched it and considered it a decent movie viewing experience.
Never thought I'd see you do this movie review, Minty. I'm thoroughly impressed and pleased. This movie got me into and over my fear of spiders. Great film. I still watch it often.
