How BAD are soldering fumes?

  • Banggood.com sent me this air quality meter which detects very small particles in the air. Being that I live in Canada, specifically in a part where the air quality stays fairly good, I decided to see how many particles are released when soldering. Then It's time to test a commonly recommended method for dispersing solder fumes!

I have had one of those meters for years in my shop. Its a quick way to see if my air cleaner is doing its job. We also use it in the house when there is a lot of pollen, or as you said, when there are forest fires.

Soren from the "Electronics repair school" channel loves to inhale burning rosin fumes/smoke. And I don't think anyone says rosin with the quite the love as he does. And if I'm being honest.. I kinda dig it too, but I thought it was because I relate the smell to the fun of soldering.

I have successfully used a similar fan drawing air to the back of my bench (50cm from soldering position) for several years.

Next time turn the fan around and have the fan draw air across your work surface. That might keep it from cooling off your solder joints.

Dilution is the solution to pollution :) Very cool device. That is the same sensor that is in the $200 Foobot. That thing is a bargain.

I worry less about the rosin fumes and more about the little bit of plastic that gets melted every once in a while while soldering.

Can you put sources to where you read that solder fumes are not lead. I want to read about it.

“Soldering fumes” may contain particles from 10 to 150nm. A nanometer is 1000 times smaller than a micrometer. 1 micrometer (μm) = 1000 nanometers. Could you please correct me?

I'm 60 YO and have been soldering for 50 of those. Myself and many of my colleagues with similar history have no ill effect from soldering. If fact of all the people I know who've been exposed to solder fumes only two died of cancer, 1 was lung cancer from smoking the other bowel cancer. The rest of us are in perfect health. And we're all nerds so we don't get much exercise either. The actual concentration of ingested lead from these this activity is 10,000 times less than exposure from car exhaust in the 70's with leaded fuel. A 30min walk through central New York in 1978 would expose you to more than a life time of soldering. Let a lone a daily commute. And a lot of those New Yorker's from that time are still happy and healthy today.
There is no concern, its just a ploy to sell fancy fume hoods and tables to hobbyists. Enjoy your hobby and breath freely. There is a million other things that will kill you sooner.
