Back in the 1980s, I had an Oldsmobile cutlass supreme with the 5.7 L V-8 GM diesel. One morning when I started the car off at 20° below zero, did it ever smoke. There was so much smoke from that car when I started it that this elderly lady who lived across the street from us almost called the fire department.
In the early 1990s, I had a VW "Rabbit" Diesel. I started it one time after 6 tries with the glow plugs at -23F/-31C. Once running it was fine, but the first few times I used the clutch it would stick to the floor and then pop back and smack the bottom of my foot. I covered half of the radiator with a piece of cardboard in order to have heat at freeway speed. Ah, the memories....
This reminded me of the ol' stories my uncle used to tell me: apparently it was common practice in farms to make a fire and put some coals under the tractors to warm them up before attempting to start them. :D
we had a sterling truck at work with a cat c7, a sticker on the dash said when cold dont stop cranking until it starts or 30 seconds had passed, then stop and wait a few minutes for the starter to cool. also im pretty sure the ford 6.0 starter was good to crank for 20 or 30 seconds at a time(according to service maual). gear reduction starters can crank for a while without problems. also my acura's service manual says the starter has a 30 second rating.
speed psyko no no I understand a lot are designed to run for extended periods but I'm meaning overall at low Temps there is so much force involved turning them over and even the starter gears just constant pounding .... just plug them in lol or cycle the gridheaters/glowplugs a couple more times coldstarts make Me cringe especially ford 6.0 with oil fired injectors bah! !!!!!!....only thing worse is a can of either in the hands of someone with some iq restraints ... knock knock lol
+CrismaFire - If I had a nice pickup like those, I would install a pre-heater in it, even if I had to run a lead all the way to my house to power it. I wouldn't hope to guess the cost of having to de-glaze an engine of that quality.
In a former career, I used to be a train driver. Having to cold start old (older than me) English Electric & Mirrlees V12 loco engines - half an hour of farting, coughing, smoking torture, before you even get the chance of moving it. I find it interesting that even now, it's pretty much the same situation today.
LOL, cold start in the US, -5C, cold start in Scandinavia is more like -15C to -40C. And still our Diesels start within 3 seconds :) Glow plug quality.
Nothing to do with glow plugs..all to do with up to date tech and 24v starting systems! That thing needing assistance at 6.30 looks and sounds like a hot bulb engine from the 1930's!
That and most of the companies and drivers aren't government subsidized and have to turn a profit to live. Equipment is used a lot longer here in the States than in the EU. Unlike Europe, if it works, we keep using it rather than legislate it out of existence and buy another one for 500,000 euros, although now EU stupidity is coming Stateside.
Very few Tesla drivers own their cars. 75 percent of them are leased, which makes sense: every five to seven years, you have to replace the battery pack and that's going to run you somewhere between $12,000 and $25,000. Let's say it's $15,000. Fifteen thousand dollars is roughly equivalent to the price of an engine overhaul on a BMW 3-series PLUS all the preventive maintenance you would have needed to do to the BMW over the four years between the end of the free maintenance period and the overhaul PLUS the difference in price between charging a Tesla and putting gas in a BMW...but the Tesla driver has to pay that all at once instead of spreading it out like a BMW driver does, and no BMW that's driven even halfway sensibly will need an engine after only seven years but the Tesla will definitely need a new battery. Leasing Teslas completely eliminates that expense.
jmowreader electricity Is just for the lights.. not for cars.. for me petrol cars never Will be replaced by the electricity (sorry for my bad english bru)
I have an Opel Astra Diesel. As these days the temperatures are down to -14°C, the same thing happens by starting. The sad thing is that the German politicians want to prevent Diesel engines & that is a catastrophe!

how did i get on a rabbit hole of watching cold diesel starts.. and why am i going to keep watching.?
Starting fluid makes that process a lot less painful.
What's the ticking noise when some of the big trucks coldstart? I would like to know please and thanks
Turn on your damn glow plugs!
Most of the american diesel trucks don't have glow plugs. They have heating grids and they don't work always as good and some disable them.
Pringle Lays glow plugs don't really work when it's -20' f and the truck was sitting for a day or two with out the block heater plugged in
That's only -28°C. My old Citroën diesel does need two shots of the glow plugs when it's down about that cold, but it always starts on the first turn.
Have we gotten so far from our roots we've forgotten you crawl under the truck with a propane torch and warm up the oil pan when it gets that damned cold?
Although smaller diesel engines have glow plugs, big ones don't.
3:52 how Many starters you buy every winter?
I feel really bad for all of their starters
Exactly! A starter is not designed to work continuously for 2 or 3 minutes...
Its better than sitting around not doing anything
I can literally hear the starter motors screaming in pain 😂😂
Glowplugs not included! :)
Or maybe out of action!
Intake heater problems on those Cummins? Mine never had problems starting. The powerstroke company truck I used to have wouldn’t start if the temp was below 65 Fahrenheit and not plugged in.
