    The fact that the crew got 379 passengers out without any injuries in 90 seconds is insane. RIP to coast guards but the crew on the a350 need a raise that is impressive. This just shows that if you pay attention during the saftey demo you’ll be ok.

      That is not what happened at all. 90 seconds is what the plane is certified for, it actually took them 18 minutes after they came to a stop, before everyone was off the plane.

    Impressive how everyone aboard the Airbus was able to escape. Sadly the 5 that perished were only there to help with relief. So sad. RIP

      @@pass179Everybody on the larger Airbus passenger plane evacuated with only some minor bruises, unfortunately the smaller Japanese coast guard plane entered the runway when they weren’t supposed to, and 5 of the 6 people on board perished.

    Everyone on board survived. Plane had collided with a coast guard aircraft during landing. Unfortunately the 5 crew of the coast guard plane did not survive

    According to VAS, JAL 516 was cleared to land by ATC, while the Coast Guard plane was instructed to "Hold." So, it appears that the Coast Guard plane committed a runway incursion, which did not give JAL 516 time to execute an aborted landing and avoid the collision.

      It could also be that the plane landing misunderstood something. In all though it sounds like a simple case of communication failure which sadly cost so many lives.

      We have no idea until the accident report comes in. The media is not exactly trustable with these kind of analysis since they for 1 don't have the radio communications, the black boxes, or anything else for that matter.@@jamie123b

      ​@@jamie123bBecause we don't have ALL the details yet. I also tried to locate where and when the Coast Guard contacted Tower to enter the Active and since there's no read back whatsoever, it must've been communicating in UHF. Since there's no way for us to know if the Dash-8 were told either hold short or Line up and wait, I'd wait for the initial findings before we tackle this further.

      @@pedrosoandrew One thing that is clear, there never was a transmission to cancel JAL516's clearance. So that's not on them. It was either the Coast Guard crew or ATC.

    Man this year is going really harsh with Japan. On the first day itself, they experienced Tsunami and Earthquake and then plane collision.

      Yes it’s true. I was so suprised only 222 people death and missing from magnitude 7. All 379 people in airbus completed their evacuation within 18 minutes. I noticed successful aspect for the Japanese people did minimize damage and saved lots life by human wisdom.

    Looks like the JAL 350 landed on top of the smaller Bombadier Dash 8. The Dash 8 moved onto the runway instead of Holding on the taxi way as instructed. There has been a serious increase in incursion incidents.

      Watch the very beginning of the clip. JAL519 was fully on the ground first. The nose was already down at impact.

      I've also heard the JAL had approach clearance, but not landing clearance. Could be JAL, Coast Guard, or ATC. Lessons will be learned, I guess.

      The Coast Guard aircraft ready to respond to the earthquake was on the runway. The JAL plane landed on the same runway and hit it as it was landing. Who had the right of way is the question. The fault could be with ATC, the Coast Guard, or JAL.

      This surveillance footage so it would go back as long as you want.

      But before. It would be moving so slowly if at all that it would have no time to make it onto the rubway after the Airbus touched down, that was only 2-3 seconds before impact. And planes taxi at about 20 -40 kph. Usually a lot slower when lining up with the runway, maybe 2-3 knots (x2 for kph).

    My Grandpa told me when he was overseas during korea at the air force base.... they had it to where by the time that happened they had the foam on the runway were cutting the plane to get the slide for the people the fire contained and the plane caught with a big crane at the end of the runway in under 2 minutes

    JL516 was normal landing but unaware of the military plane MA722 that was loaded with disaster relief to the earthquake region. Probably a result of miscommunication. 5 dead on MA722, pilot injured.

      From what I understood the military plane was told to hold. What's unclear if they followed that instruction or if the plane landing misunderstood something. It could be that they were all correct and just some sort of oversight. A similar thing happened in Los Angles and it was found that not everyone had a clear picture of what was going on so no one was really at fault.

How could you possibly believe such a thing when two planes with hundreds of people have crashed into each other? Aviation communication is so important and critical that an “oversight” while in other occupations might be trivial, in aviation it’s a major major fault. Either one of pilots used the runway without permission or ATC cleared both to use the runway. “Some sort of oversight” is the understatement of the millennium

    It’s crazy to think that this was the first fatal accident of the a350-900, and was in the beginning of 2024.

      All Passengers and Crew aboard the A350-900 were all accounted for. Only the hull was lost. Can't say the same for the Dash-8, though.

      ​@@pedrosoandrew The turboprop is the fatality. It still counts even if the engine eats ground personell. But it's unlikely to have a negative effect on Airbus sales or JAL bookings.

    Stop light was out of order.
    the light must have both go(blue) and stop(red) lights.

      Irrelevant. The Dash 8 was told to hold at C5. And when the lights are out of order, you are supposed to verify your clearance to cross the lines. The Dash 8 pilot was solely at fault.

    When you hear the ATC you can see the military plane was instructed to hold position but he lined up for take off instead. Nobody realized this so the A350 landed over the military plane.
