Ok, we got ourselves a puzzler here! Let's start with the fundamentals...
If a radio is dropping out of transmit or has intermittent loss of receive, check the microphone first. Modern radios use "electronic switching", old radios have relays in them. If the problem persists after changing the mike, jumper the mike plug. If it still doesn't work right start checking voltages. Since someone recapped this radio I would first verify that the correct values are where they should be and then start the tedious job of checking voltages.
The IF can issue is deep and serious. If you look at the schematic you'll find a capacitor across the coil. This is necessary for it to be a tuned circuit. If the value of the capacitor has shifted then the coil tuning has to compensate. This has resulted in the slugs having to be as far out of the cans as they are. The caps are usually ceramic disks, but some are inside the can and can't be replaced.

That radio is one of the best Cybernet SSB rigs ever built even better than the Export 7001s quality construction inside, the export rigs have cheap build quality, still good but the US 7001 is superb! id have one leave it stock deffo worth saving.

let's see the inside of it.. both side of the board.. The Export one We have in Europe was a good late Cybernet Chassis, and there are some excellent service manuals for it floating about. So, if it's even close, You can fix it and make it sing again. There should be nothing in there that cannot be fixed. Even the VCO block is being remade now by the Ham International Guy in Belgium..

If I see that none are leaking and rx is ok then nothing gets changed out.
Yep, change everything back out of that one.
If there are RX issues and things just aren't working right then I would have no choice but get those out of there and re-align.
I would do it if it was mine. If nothing gets better then it sits on the shelf for keepsake and looks.

Some guys do a complete recap job just because. My theory is that unless there's a problem, usually distorted audio or a squelch problem, leave it alone.

Like you said, "put it on the bottom of the stack", because you may run across another 7001 that works well, but the faceplate is buggered up (the one you have looks good). Alternatives: Bite the bullet and get an ecap kit from Klondike Mike and hope the kit takes care of your issues, after all, you'd only have the cost of the kit invested in the radio as it was a gift, and Klondike Mike's kits aren't Chinese duds. You could set your sights up the chain to the next radio - the 8001 (you'll get FM) and put the 7001 on permanent display with your other Midland radios?

The KM kit that I bought to do a radio for a friend was a good kit, it came with a few xtra caps to cover a updated board, KM kits did not leave me hanging. I was thinking of putting more time in this radio however the other Midland 001 series radios that I own do not perform all that well either. Compared to most UNIDEN chassis rigs. IMO.
      Cheers

some radios you gotta do at least some caps. 2510's for sure, older 858 radios the tantulum caps will short out and take out the audio chip. now its ceramic caps that are screwing up.
chongx or chang is trash for sure. nichicon, united chemicon, panasonic, kemet for tantalims and thats about it.

I agree some older caps are higher quality than Chinese today! How ever in high voltage power supply’s for tube amps and old highbred radios if not replaced cap’s can take out the tubes! $$$$💰💰💰💰💰 UDX38, aka, WR038, Hammie Ham KJ7TBR. CHOW
